Cut the crap with the cheap shot nonsense. Heck, his first ever NHL shift he was challenged by Martin. For what?? Then the next two were set up during warmups. At least the Reaves fight happened due to the circumstances of the game.
Having the skill to hit on the open ice or against the boards is something most current players don’t have. If his skill in deciding when and where to hit improves, he could be much more valuable than he’s been

No, THIS KID IS BRINGING BACK THE ROLE OF ENFORCER. AS A RED WING FAN, WE NEED A GUY LIKE PROBERT RIGHT NOW! THE ONLY THING WE ARE MISSING IS THE PHYSICAL ASPECT OF HAVING A SLUGGER WHO WILL DROP THE MITTS IN A SECOND IF OUR STARS GET RAN!
Everyone needs to chill TF out. He's calmed down now. He's just a kid. A big kid, but a kid nonetheless. Did he or did he not make a huge splash in his debut in the NHL? For not having a name like Bedard or McDavid he's had all of MSG chanting his name. Impressive. Yes he went too far with the elbow on Siegenthaler, but he's learned his lesson. The kid can skate and has some skills too. Good luck to any goalie trying to see a shot when he's setting a screen. Not easy to push him out of the way either. Everyone needs to just calm down and let the kid play. We're literally talking about a couple of fights and one questionable hit. Ever heard of Tom Wilson or Brad Marchand? For real, cut the kid some slack.
Great take. It looks like he’s doing anything coaches want him to do, and he’ll do his best to be any type of player they want him to be. Like you said, he’s a kid. So much heart. I absolutely love hockey and everything about it. You can't take fighting or enforcing from the game. It's a small part of what makes our sport special and should not be removed. The players are fully aware of the dangers like how some wear protection on their necks and some don't.
im not a hockey fan, i just gained interest after i lost my interest into the nba. i really came to like hockey during the last year but i can honestly say that there are 2 things about it i just dont like or dont care, thats a) onside rule which i just dont understand and b) fighting or cheapshots. i appreciate some hard hits to the body , thats obviously part of the game but what makes it amazing is technique and amazing skaters, great passes, creative goals... thats what makes it a great sport to me. if you want to fight, go fight in a boxing-ring, for me it takes more away than it brings to the table. and this young man from the rangers... idk, he seems to like getting punched a tick to much for my liking, propably wont end well.
I love hockey too but you can’t keep taking blows to the head. Concussions will happen from body contact as it is….no need to get them from fighting. Not to mention what his hands will look like after a few seasons. Rempe will have a short career if he doesn’t respect his body. He will need hockey skills to stay long term.
@@georgebenevides I understand the role of an enforcer…been a hockey fan for decades. I’ve also seen the role of an enforcer diminish over the years. The league is changing. The game is getting faster and younger. People getting all excited abut an 11 game sample for a guy averaging 5-6 minutes. Whatever.
I hope Rempe doesn't get too many concussions from here on out. I had two major concussions fighting amateur Muay Thai Kickboxing and the second one took 8 months to recover from. I later went back to hockey to coach my kids' teams and got invited to a higher level shinny. I got tripped skating backwards and hit the back of my head with my helmet on...man I saw some serious stars. I didn't feel good for about another year but just dealt with it. These enforcers in the NHL have to bare knuckle fight all the time, I pray for them (and I ain't religious).
Fighting in hockey is not bread & circus.... it holds players accountable for their play, it's not violence is Valor.... fighting allows superstars to display skill set embiggins fellow teammates & usually are fan favorites.... the risk of injury to the NHL enforcer is great, his reputation is also at risk losing fights....
Thats a bad argument. Accountability should be enforced by the refs thats why they are on the ice. Its not the 70s with rules not protecting the stars. European leagues dont have fighting and you still dont see any headhunting of the the stars. With that said I do like that the NHL allow some fighting because it excites me.
It was cool that he got a fight in his first moment on the ice. What an incredible way to enter the NHL. Then he got in enough fights it's not as fun anymore. Hes about to be a 30 year old dementia patient. Now I'm just sad for his future brain health.
@@beyond_thebenchyeah fighting served a purpose. It was to enforce the “code” it wasn’t just to get your rocks off or to appease fans. The reason why the players association fights so hard (pun intended) to keep it in the game was because of the “code”, causal fans seem to think it’s done for no reason & just cause a player “felt like it”
If you think a 6'7 clown getting dummied in half his fights is excitement and not Auston Matthews march to 70 goals, you might be interested in the wrong sport, champ.
People need to remember that Athletes play sports voluntarily, they accept the risks associated with the sport, if Rempe and others want to fight let them, the Athletes can determine when enough is enough and retire, and if they misjudged what their body could take that is on no one but themselves. There’s obvious safety rules that are good like targeting the head being a huge no no, but if I hit you hard and it was clean, there’s no reason I should be penalized because you didn’t get back up. Sports are going softer and softer to try and bring more and more money in, Hockey has been one of the last holdouts against that, I hope Rempe has a long career and brings an edge back to the sport that many have missed in the past few years
so, as someone who isn't a hockey fan but likes watching the fights, my question is who's out here making such a ruckus about the fighting, if its not the fans? The whole "creates a cone of silence" bit BTB mentioned sounds like the sort of arguments the woke folks who aren't part of fanbases use to try and influence hobbies and industries. If the people who run things cave, they end up running off fans while not picking up any new ones
@ the NHL has been trying to reduce fighting to appeal to the mainstream media for years, some rules like bench clearing and second man in were good changes, others like the instigator and second fight ejection rules are bad, but all of them have been made to appeal to a wider audience, I do believe the players association pushed for a few specific changes like second man in for player safety aswell
In my day, I don't think ANYBODY was a better fighter/tough guy than Nick Fotiu. Dave Schultz wrote in his book that he wanted no part of him. Terry O'Reilly was right up there too.
As an old school Bruins fan I like Rempe's style. I like the enforcer role I just dont like the dirty player side of his game. If he can mature and clean that up I could become a big fan.
@@Cambergainyeah, because every other team has always been legal to the letter. Maybe you need to get a grip or start watching tennis. Everybody prefers not to see the dirty aspects of any sport, actions that destroy other peoples careers. There's intentional & unintentional but it's a physical game. Scott Stevens is a legend but look at some of the plays he made.
Taking the fighting out of hockey is ridiculous. It's a traditional part of the game and makes it more entertaining. I'm not a fan of violence in general, but it's better to let them work it out on the ice than have all that pent up aggression. It's not like they are slicing each other up with their skates or beating each other with their sticks. Let the boys fight FFS. This world is getting too soft.
Ive watched the Rangers for 50 years and don't remember them having a presence like Rempe, ever. They've had some pests but this guy changes the tone of the game.
To all the people who are saying REMPE is a negative thing for the sport and worried about his health... He's a grown man who just like all of us, can choose his career choice knowing its risks. Just like a coal miner who's lungs are covered in coal or a massage therapist who gets arthritis in their hands... they all go into their career knowing the risks of the job. I've played hockey since I was 8. I'm merely a beer league player, but definitely a 6'4" physical presence on any ice I skate on. Every teammate I've ever stepped up for has only earned me more respect and appreciation from them. Pretty sure I speak for every hockey player out there when I say... Hockey needs REMPE and all the old school style that comes with it!
His career most likely won't be long either way. He will other fight himself into poor health within a few seasons. Or stop fighting and try to keep his career going based on skill/game play - which isn't something he's really got. Best case scenario? End up on a 4th line somewhere for awhile as a novelty size player who playes less than 10 minutes a game just to scare the other team with a few big hits
League focuses too much on his size, strength and toughness. He has been challenged in every fight. He actually has skill and anyone who follows him would know this. There are and there will be alot worst players than him
I love this kid! I hope he has a long career! This is part of hockey. The people hating it typically don't like it because they think its staged, some of it is but that is to get around the rules of the instigator. Stupid penalty that over penalizes the person that is stepping up to protect his team, aka the enforcer. Before that rule, if you through a cheap shot, didn't matter who you were, you had to answer the bell right then and there or when you got out of the box if it got called. Now if some one comes right up and rings the bell they get the instigator penalty and it results in a 7 min power play for the dirty players team and a 17 min break for the guy protecting his team. pull that stupid rule out and everything will reset its self. Every star player wants a guy like Rempe on their team, Connor Bedard absolutely needs one, he could have a short career if he keeps getting rag dolled. look at Crosby, he had to take a long break due to concussions. All the former greats had their guys. I hope the NHL realizes this and stops trying to soften the game. and all those people that are going to scream CTE, the NHL released a report on this and research shows CTE is caused by concussions and fighting is only related to about 5% of concussions in the NHL the rest come from big open ice hits and hits along the boards where head makes contact into the boards.
Rempe is not just an enforcer. Yeah, he has the traditional ones lining up for their moment with him but hes a hockey player. He can take regular 4th round shifts and someday he might be more. While I dont think his upside is to the level of say Tom Wilson. But like Wilson he is out there because he can play. And that’s a problem for other teams. Rempe’ hits frighteningly hard. And he can hit clean. Guys are adjusting but he is out there and the other bench is paying attention when he is but on a team that quickly gets deep as the Rangers are designed, having Rempe battling for pucks down low
I don't mind the fighting by Rempe but the dirty hits are another matter. If he keeps coming in with his shoulders and elbows to the head somebody's gonna get seriously hurt.
Rempe's a lurch so his hits are always going to be off. He needs to talk to Chara before he becomes a pariah. Chara had the same problems when he first entered the league.
If Rempe can continue to develop his non-physical skills and mature as a player, the real question is what does the league do? Many of his most controversial hits would go totally unnoticed if he were say 6'1". He usually has great form. Stops skating, tucks his elbow and stays on the ice, but his size causes "problematic" contact. Does the league really want to change the way the game is played based on one dude? Or will they just intentionally penalize him out of the game? So far, the latter seems to be the approach.
The suspension has now come, but his story mirrors Derek Boogaard's. I would not be shocked if Rempe develops an addiction to painkillers by the time he is 25, and considering he was inches form hitting his head on the ice when fighting Nick Deslauriers, he is one fall away from serious injury or death.
F …Rempe the bigger they are the harder they fall. His opponents just need to keep going for his eyes. If he refuses to settle down. He can learn to accept the long term consequences of his actions!
Big fan cause I love old school hockey. That said - I hope he'll be able to tie his shoes when his career is over. Many have followed his path with negative results.
Mathieu Olivier is trouble for Matt Rempe. Dude went straight up EA NHL right stick on that kid that black eye will probably be featured on his Ultimate Team card in NHL 25. 🤣
I don't mind fighting. Sometimes it just needs to happen. But I hope Rempe keeps his aggression but stops doing it in a way that makes him sit on the bench more than his playtime. He is everything people missed about hockey and I don't want that to end quickly in a bad way.
When Rempe came up , every thug from Reeves to Wilson lined up to take on the New Guy! Fighting in part of the game. He is just a kid figuring out who and what he is. Not a goon He has talent and ability! I like him, and NY loves him.Let it go!
"Fighting every tough guy" lol except Macdermid. 🏃🏼♂️i dont mind him hitting. Indi mind him elbow smashing people. Ranger fans act like hes the only tall guy in the league and is the first. I love this kid! He needs to do more hip checks because he’s so damn tall all his hits are high. I hope he gets to stick around the league and refines his play
There are no tough guys in the NHL anymore. WTF you talking about. They are a joke today. Probert, Kocur, Brown, Gaetz, Ewen, Simon, Twist those where tough guys. No more Enforcers hasn't been for almost 10 years now.

I was at the Stadium Series game when Matt Rempe had his first fight. We were all sitting down getting ready for the next face off and I saw everyone still standing and cheering wildly. I, confused, stood up and saw motherfuckin' Matt Rempe throwing hands with that Islanders' player. Really fun game, great comeback, could've been a greater season if they won the Conference.
the first hit is an unclean hit As soon as the skates take off from the ice in an attempt to hit an opponent, 2 minute penalty is something that is repeated fine and we end up with suspension, I remember well a Vancover player who hit a Boston player back in 11, why does suspension only end when the player is almost dead?
Like I said in another post, Rempe wouldn’t last four games in the 90’s. Probert, McSorley, Clark, Nilan etc would annihilate him. NHL nowadays is weak.
Rempe was put in check a few games ago. He was in a fight and said I'm done. Yup, he was right. He's done. As a trained boxer/martial artist, once you quit, it sticks with you. Next year, he will have a few fights, but they will be earned fights. My money will never be on Rempe though.
To me, the greatest ever enforcer is Bob Probert. Not only an absolute animal fighting wise, he could actually play a bit. Multiple 20 goal seasons, plus 63 points and 398 penalty minutes in the 87-88 season!!!
I hope this kid….learns from others….how to use his height and reach to his best advantage. I would hate for him…..to suffer the consequences of having taken to many shots to his head, in the years to come. Play tough…but not stupid. Fight only when you have too to protect your teammates or yourself. But don’t make.a …habit of it. Play hard enjoy the game…..keep the fights to an absolute minimum.
The cte argument doesn’t hold water: Boogaard wasnt even on the top 181 list of players with most fights… by 34 fights! The leader carries an astonishing 6x the amount. The limitation of fights and physicality in hockey only hurt in the long run, when the inexperienced meet the experienced. Some people just aren’t made for it. It’s meant to be a battle!

The team finally has someone that will defend and protect his teammates and YES people are BITCHING. It's up to the coaches to keep this kid from getting hurt, he is tall so it makes it hard so they have to show him a better way to hit . In previous years Rangers were being dragged on the ice specially Washington and Wilson. My favorite Ranger enforcer Derek Boogaard.
Fighting had been proven to not be the major cause of all the head injuries and the "kids gloves" mentality they're bringing to the game. The only thing they have to put a stop to is dirty hits. How do you do that? Your enforcer... Every team needs one to protect their top guys. A bad-@$s enforcer= no one wants to do any dirty shenanigans because they will have to answer for it. I'm sorry but suspending a player isn't going to stop em from dirty play. If anything they should be forced to shift in when the opposing teams enforcer comes on so they can get stomped out. That said I severely dislike the Rangers so Rempe keep using your face as a shield it's working great.
I love the kid he has ball's and don't care who he fights, and he's still growing at 21 yrs old, when he fills out and adds more muscle and cleans up his fighting he'll be a beast for yrs to come in the NHL, the Rempe state building is coming to a ice rink near you. 😊😊😊😊
Rempe is good showman! People want to see action, only this one time, when he didn't fight was bullshitt, when he was affraid, and only do like bye bye! I'm from Finland, so my english is not good, but NHL needs more "Rempes", icehockey is for men, not for women. No matter that they play, but play have to be hard, tackling, fightin, BUT NOT tacles to knee, elbow to face, stick in neck or mouth. Fair hard game, is only, how NHL can survive with : Basketball, Baseball, and American football pressure.
The kid is big and talented. He needs to be careful not to seriously injure someone. Hopefully the coaches tone down his recklessness. You can be a big physical force on the ice without using your elbows or boarding someone.

A sore face will get boring soon enough. In a way there's nothing he can do about it because of his size, it would be a different story if he was 6'2 or 6'3, but with his size theirs an expectation no matter what, even if he could be the new Gretzky people would still expect him to do some damage nearly every game. Y'know, how many Lady Byng's did Chara win? Lol. 👍
Hope he doesn’t end up like the Boogey man

Cut the crap with the cheap shot nonsense. Heck, his first ever NHL shift he was challenged by Martin. For what?? Then the next two were set up during warmups. At least the Reaves fight happened due to the circumstances of the game.
Having the skill to hit on the open ice or against the boards is something most current players don’t have. If his skill in deciding when and where to hit improves, he could be much more valuable than he’s been

I hope the NHL realizes this and stops trying to soften the game. and all those people that are going to scream CTE, the NHL released a report on this and research shows CTE is caused by concussions and fighting is only related to about 5% of concussions in the NHL the rest come from big open ice hits and hits along the boards where head makes contact into the boards.
he’s great for the league, the NHL has gotten too soft lately
Indeed it has!
Yep!
I remember growing up and seeing a fight almost every game. Now your lucky to see a nice hit
Facts
“Questionable high hit” Hardly. You can see with your own eyes his elbow was so far up it might as well be up in the nosebleed section.
Finally old time hockey. Great to see , as long as this young man understands you fight only guys that fight.

He's trying to prove himself in the big leagues, he will calm down soon enough.
He can punch no doubt, but he can't 'fight'...He should study film on guys like Semenko, McCarty, Grimson, Domi, et al...
