- Iron Reagan guitarist Phil "Landphil" Hall and Power Trip vocalist Riley Gale explain why thrash metal is "metal supreme" - the best subgenre. They discuss the diversity of vocal styles, lyrical topics and how it maintains technicality while being catchy and streamlined. They discuss their "Big 4" bands, deciding which of the actual list they'd cut and who they'd add. They also explain why Paul Baloff and Gary Holt of Exodus are thrash gods. March 10, 2017.

Riley doesn't let Phil finish his sentence
He's on a Power Trip.
Big 4: Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax
Big 4 of Bay Area: Exodus, Testament, Vio-Lence, Death Angel
Big 4 of German Thrash: Kreator, Sodom, Destruction, Tankard
Big 4 of New Wave: Havok, Warbringer, Munipcal Waste, Toxic Holocaust
Big 4 of Current Thrash: Power Trip, Lost Society, Dust Bolt, Violator
Now this is extensive! Respect.
Luke Harman i agree with this ☝️
Lost society isn't thrash anymore..
Overkill?
Exhorder instead of Tankard - in German thrash
I wish Riley hadn't just butted in and spoken over Phil as much as he did...
yeh becuase phil goes on and on he needs to but in
riley seems like a dick, dont like his attitude that much
I guess you could say he was on a... Power Trip.
@@endowednigerian He wasn't.
@@endowednigerian then you don’t know anything about him……
No love for Megadeth? Well fuck me... Not sure what to say to that. Kinda stunned...
Your name says it all.
Can't exactly deny it can I :)
I was shocked too. "Anthrax over Megadeth"? No thank you!
Megadeth is the cheesiest of the big four
Hate Megadeth, but love your pic. Yuri gangarin is great!
Powertrip, "One of my favorite bands is Sodom." No shit lol. Power Trip is great. I first heard them live and my exact words were, "This sounds like Sodom."
I heard he has been killing it lately.
I grew up on Thrash in the 80's and I love it, but at the same time what I find really limits thrash metal is the fans. Thrash fans want thrash artist to release the same sounding album for 30 years. And Thrash fans don't want their bands to show any signs of maturity, or melody. I think Thrash has the most potential as a genre, but it's the stupid parameters that fans put on the genre that limit it. Master of Puppets will always be one of my favorite albums for it's diversity. You have fast songs, mid temp songs, and slow songs, all on one album. And while I like bands like Destruction to a point, basically I love the first three songs, eventually my eyes start to cross because the entire album is the same tempo, and the same level of aggression all the way through. It just starts to feel all the same. It's like getting hit over the head with a hammer...eventually you just don't feel it anymore. And then Thrash fans will start bitching that Metallica slowed down, and will argue over which albums weren't thrash anymore, and they start saying "Well Overkill, and Destruction, never sold out and stayed thrash. That's true, Overkill and Destruction made the same sounding albums their entire career. I love Overkill too, but honestly it's there first four albums that do it for me. Then you hear thrash bands talking about their new albums and all they do is talk about how the new album is faster, and heavier, because that's all the fans want. I love Slayer but their last album sucked, and fans keep defending it like it's awesome, when the only thing it's got going for it is speed and heaviness. There are hardly any great riffs, or chorus', and without Tom's or Jeff's lyrics the lyrics are down right silly a lot of the times. And Slayer used to be some of the best lyric writers. Thrash bands seem to spend their entire careers competing with their greatest album. I find that doesn't happen with Death Metal, Grindcore, or Classic metal as much.
I mostly agree with your statement, still I find there are a lot of bands who want their next album to be as good or better than the previous ones. These mostly include new Thrash bands like Warbringer, Hatchet and Harlott, but also older bands that write the music they want to hear.
My favourite band is Warbringer and they've definitely got a rather big variety of songs, especially on their two newest album, _Empires Collapse_ and _Woe to the Vanquished_ . If people like them are the future of Thrash then I think the quality of the (sub)genre won't vanish that quickly.
I've heard of Warbringer, but I haven't heard Warbringer. I don't listen to many newer bands. My issue is I have so much damn music that I don't have the time to give the bands I already like the attention they deserve.
I know this problem too, but even though I'm only into Metal for about 10 months now, my taste has changed frequently. I bet it's not easy knowing so many bands from the beginning of Thrash onwards. If you're interested and you've got the time, I suggest you listen to the bands I listed above and also whatever is popular with their listeners. There's a bunch of newer bands playing old school Thrash, though I mostly listen to the newer crossover styles of Thrash, like Death/Thrash (eg Warbringer).
The problem was I discovered Amazon right after youtube and now every album I ever wanted I could suddenly get. So I spent a lot of money over 4-5 years buying up tons of albums and not listening to them as much as I should before I bought more. I'm slowing down this year though, and going forward probably won't buy as much music. If there's a band I'd like to have it would be Dark Angel.
Vektor, power trip and gatecreeper are probably the best new bands.
Three great acts!
KrustySwisher I'd add Revocation and Sylosis to that list.
everyone in Vektor quit the band when they got back from their tour last year. i think the singer is reforming the band as he said recently he has "recharged the void".
FUCKING GATECREEPER!!
Vektor were great until everyone quit it and their idiot vocalist smacked around his wife
Old school death metal all the way!
Some of my favourite music ever!
they talking about Paul Balof And show a foto of Steve "Zetro" Souza big mistake :(
Damn, good catch. The editor of this video isn't a thrasher or much of a metal guy at all, really, so I'm assuming he got that information from here: www.pinterest.ca/pin/311311392973429387/
While there is no best sub genre, I can definitely see now that Thrash is very diverse. From Joey Belladonna's ultra clean vocals to Mille Petrozza's screeching shouted vocals, huge amount of diversity. Same goes for the music itself, some bands play really fast and technical, some play slow and heavy.
I would say Death Metal is pretty diverse too. From John Tardy's vomiting vocals to early Glen Benton's thrashy yells (I say thrashy yells because he isn't growling much like on later albums) and demon possessed screams, there certainly is diversity. Yeah, I know most Death Metal bands use the Death Growl or Blackened Scream or both, but I don't think clean vocals would work well. Sure, if Slayer covered a Morbid Angel song, I'll be all ears for that.
I agree that death metal can be diverse, but less so than thrash. With death metal there almost always has to be some kind of growl/yell behind it, whereas thrash can go from singing, anywhere on the spectrum of sort of singing/sort of yelling (compare Exodus to Slayer, for example), to straight up yelling to growling. But ya, both have diversity, though it'd be easier for a non-metalhead to recognize that in thrash than death metal where they'd be like, "Why all that screamo stuff guyzzzz?"
Love that actual guys in thrash keep Metallica and knock off Megadeth. With most thrash fans its the other way around. Mad respect for that. Just because you're super into thrash doesn't mean you have to pretend to hate Metallica
Sheldon Champagne people don’t pretend to dislike Metallica, they have some good songs and some good albums but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.
to me metallica fell off the wagon after and justice for all
The Big 4 are the Big 4 for a reason. Anthrax, Megadeth, Metallica, Slayer are awesome! And left the strongest impact.
well PT dude mentioned some of his influences but in the end he sounds like Jeff Beccera...and it's great
Not quite as guttural, mind you, but hell ya!
Exodus, Slayer, Demolition Hammer, Sadus and Devastation.
Yeah powertrip are.really bringin heavy.fast.thrash back better then alot.of other bands.have over.the past 10 years or more
Phil obviously annoyed with being interrupted but I get Riley, me and him would never let each other finish a word
rip riley gale
Power Trip is becoming the best metal band of the modern era
Killing it, no doubt!
Yep. Power Trip and Havok are the future Thrash Kings I do believe. I also just started listening to Iron Reagan and they are pretty kick ass too!
Damn straight
fucking RIP riley
Vio-Lence, Sodom, Sepultura, Slayer are the GOATs
POWER TRIPPPPP
YESSSSSSS
saw power trip 2 times greta guys. last time with napalm death and shit they had finished vinyl......
Hell yeah. Always ripping!
R.I.P. Riley!
Can anyone let me know what band logo that is on Riley’s hat? I recognize it, but not sure from where? Thanks!
Lockin' Out Records. A hardcore label that released their self-titled 7".
You just earn a new subscribe for this video
Thanks so much!
RIP Riley :(
that fuckin Inquisition sweater
I enjoyed this but when they say thrash has versatile vocalist I gotta say, the big 4 all have clean vocalist who employ a high psuedo scream at a few points. Maybe that's why they're the 4, because they're so mainstream but I gotta say they're ranged vocally.
Felipe Euan they are the most mainstream. It's all based on record sales... not talent.
Phil looks like, "are you fucking serious bro"
THE ACCUSED FUCK YES BROTHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Martha Splatterhead!!!!!!!!!! one of the most awesome bands. tommy throws down insane guitar riffs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The future of trash metal is right here
THrash not trash
Glad someone finally told the truth and said what needed to be said. Megadeath sucks
Overkill is the shit too!
Dudes costume is funny.
check out VEKTOR
I like death metal that has a a strong thrash influence. "Technical brutal wankery" death metal never appealed me in any way. Its not even brutal at all. It literally has no headbanging tempos unlike death-thrash or thrash itself.
THRASH TILL DEATH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fuck yeah sacrilege and excel fucking rule
RIP
Someone's high as a kite!
check out WARFECT
Warfect is awesome!
Sacred Reich lads
Sepultura!!!!
THE BIG FOUR ARE EXODUS/OVERKILL/DEATH ANGEL/nucular assault
one does not simply knock megadeth from the big 4
I can listen to thrash all day
But not death and black (although I love them to death)
Thrash is just so fun!
Exodus, Slayer, Anthrax and Overkill. How the big 4 should of been... just my opinion.
Inquisition!

That's not Baloff!
Yeah, I've since realized that. The video was edited by someone else, and they grabbed a photo on the internet, which was erroneously attributed as Baloff. Good eye!
Megadeth is godlike. Replacing them with Exodus is sacrilege.
I'm personally a bigger fan of Exodus, so I can't hate on their choice.
Aggressive Tendencies Yea I should rephrase the comment. BUT how does one “not like” Megadeth? Liking Exodus more is understandable, but disliking Megadeth is beyond comprehension imo
Chris RA I was shocked they got rid of Megadeth but kept Metallica. Tbf I would have scrapped all 4 but Metallica is the first to go.
Slayer, Metallica, Sodom, and Destruction in that order
Phil barely got a word in for Riley 😂
Thrash Metal all the way!
ThrashMetal4ThrashMetal
All new thrash sounds the same to me nowadays, plus it's too gimmicky, comedy bs. I can't agree with him. They're only a few bands in new thrash that actually sound good. Death metal is just so much more brutal on every level. In the end, it's all down to personal preference.
Have you HEARD Power Trip?
I have. But to be honest, I haven't listened to them yet. Just not a fan of newer thrash. Only a few bands I like.
Check out Power Trip's latest album...promise it rips!
listen to Ghoul
I agree
New thrash sounds like stupid shit.
Real thrash is in the past.
Modern thrash is for deaf people.
Onslaught The force
Dark Angel Darkness Descends
Exodus Bonded by Blood
Slayer show no mercy
That is real thrash.
Modern thrash is crap, just a bunch of noise.
I totally agree on taking out Megadeth and replacing them with Exodus.
Big fan of Power Trip's music. Not a huge fan of Riley though. He never really care much about the local Dallas scene
Take away Megadeth and there IS no thrash. What kind of idea is that?!?
TWU
A thrash discussion without mention of Testament?! Pffft
How can a person say that they would knock out Megadeth outta the Big 4?
I love both bands but that is a wild opinion. Easily the most talented out of those 4...
+Steven Santmyre exactly , i mean , Megadeth literally started the Big 4 , there's a consistent reason why they are considered a Big 4 of Thrash and i really don't know how someone would knock out the most talented thrash Metal band ever , it's ridiculous!
+Steven Santmyre the thing is that i can't believe how a man like Landphill can agree with that asshole's opinion
I dont think their assholes for their opinions. Everyone likes what they like. Megadeth started my love for thrash. First thrash band I got into and first thrash concert. So its easy for me. For them thats slayer. My big 4 thrash is Megadeth, Slayer, Testament, Sepultura (Old).
Maria Fernanda Ostolaza I don't like Megadeth much either lol
Riley looks tired as fuck.
Touring takes its toll!
*stoned... he kinda is in all interviews if seen :D
"thrash is trash." - Goniloc
How the fuck are you going to talk about thrash metal when you leave out testament and death angel, they def don’t fuck with Bay Area thrash
no groove metal is supreme. Period!
Death metal is more brutal than thrash. Black metal is more evil. Doom is heavier. Grindcore is faster. Thrash is the linchpin of metal but is also the most limited in terms of musical freedom.
I disagree. I feel that Thrash can implement a wider range of sounds. Black, Death & Grindcore are all limited by the heaviness that is required for those genres. Thrash however can be dark & gory like in Slayer, political & lyrically focused like Megadeth, melodical yet heavy like Kreator or Metallica and experimental like Sepultura
Listen to fucking Kreator or Sodom
You'll see how "limited" Thrash Metal can be...
I am a fan of both of those bands. Can thrash be slow? Can it be depressing? Limited doesn't mean bad.
Tell that to Vektor
Thrash has the most freedom in metal, as you can incorporate anything you want from other genres of metal. lyrically you can do anything you want, you cant do that with straight up death and black as it has very limited subject matter that can actually fit in with the music.
Thrash can be slow, look at slayers south of heaven album they slowed the pace down on songs to give their sound more diversity. as for depressing i guess its how you define depressing, the song "as the guns fell silent" by warbringer i would consider it depressing but also epic, its an 11 minute track that has fast parts, slow parts and is one of the most diverse songs i have heard from thrash.
and vektor basically made their own style of thrash.
Crappy bands both
I mean, Death Metal is heavier than Thrash so I really can’t say it’s “supreme”. I like Thrash better than just straight death metal, but any Death Metal with slam elements or thrash elements mixed in just hits the spot for me more than straight thrash.
