For anyone interested in culinary arts DO NOT GO TO CULINARY SCHOOL. I've worked at two of the best restaurants in the country (multiple Michelin stars and James Beard awards, not just an opinion) with zero prior experience. You learn way more working at a high-end restaurant than you will learn at culinary school and you will make money doing it. Going to culinary school almost guarantees that you will go into debt that you are very unlikely to get out of. You're unlikely to be able to even start paying down your debt for at least ten years after culinary school.

@Cameron Thurtle Less so for a vocational school probably, but you're probably still better off getting experience and learning while being paid than paying to learn without really getting real world experience.

The only benefit I can see to culinary arts is that the degree(at least at my old college) did give you certification in kitchen sanitation/safety along with some classes in inventory management. So I could see the slight benefit if you're looking to open a restaurant, but it still seems like a better idea to get a business degree in that case.
Plus I'd be willing to bet you'll learn a lot more about that stuff from simply working in a kitchen like you said.

Why bother going to these expansive art schools when you can get better by going to udemy or one year art program for a certificate, or become a chef by going to real restaurants and learning there.

    "Useless art degrees". Redundant!
My A.A. was in Fine Arts. Decided "screw this", took some extra math and physics classes, and transferred into a Computer Science B.S. program.
If anyone really wants to be an art major, Fine Arts is still a bad choice because you'll likely just be trained by your Dadaist drawing professor to Macgyver together some trash you rummaged from the school dumpster, tack on some ""deep"" intellectual meaning to it, and debate your peers on whether it's art or not. Seriously.

I technically majored in Art, took graphic design courses with the intention of getting into web design. It ended up working out, but I had already decided to put more emphasis on working in dev by the time I landed full time work. It pays better and there's more opportunity for creative problem solving if you can code too. Turns out being a developer with a knack for graphics is a pretty in demand niche.
I should also note that during my first job I completed a master's in IT, which made me stand out to employers even more. Still had to learn a lot on my own though, and this definitely wasn't the only route into the field. Probably not the most efficient route either!

It's LIKE YOU READ my MIND. lol I finally settled on just becoming an Art teacher and possibly if I ever stray from the path then I'll create a portfolio and statements to get into being an Art Director. I have some skills that are unrelated but very helpful from having previous super unrelated jobs that I hated (But there's always something to learn or take away from them so always keep your eyes and ears open.... Sales and customer service man. Hated it [mostly sales] most times but the things I took away were valuable... Like marketting myself or an item or service etc. and how to deal with a wide variety of people). I realized that I suppose I could still utilize what I have learned along the way with my Psych major and I'll be graduating soon... I want to work up to become a professor and with the downtime I may or may not have I plan on having a seperate stream(s?) of income in a related field as well.

I went to junior college, got my AA degree and transferred to a four year institution. And I am majoring in art lol I’m a senior now. The difference in my situation is that I received a full ride academic merit scholarship. Basically everything is paid off. No debt and No loans were taken out. I would say that I learned a lot more of the basic art fundamentals from UA-cam, skill-share and other online learning platforms. The art they teach you at university is not very practical and a waste of time (in my honest opinion). Although it really depends on the program offerings at each university. I will be graduating next spring and I’m glad I’m not in debt. But tbh, most college degrees are becoming useless now a days. My cousin earned a business degree and he is still working at the local Starbucks. (No shame to him or others who do). It all ties back to networking and connections and people learning to market themselves. (Which I think college takes a lot of time off)

As someone who studied drawing at home for years, then studied drawing among other things for 2 years Fine Art Practice at technical college I can say that the idea that you improve the same way and at the same rate at home to be a myth. I don't learn well online due to the massive distractions, and an inability to self motivate to that degree. I'd only have stuck to what is safe and comfortable, as I think many people would. If I'd stayed at home I'd have wasted way more time doing it the wrong way and I made sure to use equipment that I didnt and couldnt have at home. That said I wouldn't go to study art in the US for a full 3 years at a big expensive traditional university. I've also seen those students who spent their time tying balloons to strings or putting crusty panties on the wall, aka modern artists. They didnt get that the value of an art degree is what skills you learn from it , not the piece of paper at the end. They made it useless through their own choices. Then when I asked why they're doing the 3rd year they didn't know - just that its the thing to be done. Which is crazy to me. You're supposed to learn what you need to learn and get out. The 3rd year was mostly about essays anyway not even art making.

If it's culinary arts you want, a lot of high schools have started culinary arts programs as part of specialized/vocational career schools. There are two such specialized high schools near me for two different public school districts. I'm guessing if you're really interested in that, you'd have already been enrolled in such a school, studied it for four years for free, and be completely prepared for the workforce without every needing to go to college.

Yeah, I'm an Artist and have been selling art for 27 years now,, not the expensive art, my range is from 150 to 300 bucks a piece, so I decide to start college to get a bachelor's in fine arts, COOL! How fun would this be! Yet, in the middle of the 2nd semester, I dropped the course and took up a business major. No Not gen! Realizing that I didn't have a issue with selling my art, MY issue was HOW to sell my art.. Best decision EVER!!! Still painting and selling art, just with more sense.

Shane, in Canada I did a one year certificate in Culinary Arts and the following year a one year certificate in Baking and Pastry. Even if I enjoy cooking and baking, my of the students in my class including me did not find jobs in culinary and baking and pastry business. I volunteered once in a restaurant and it was not exactly pleasant because the chefs make people work like dogs for many hours and get nothing to eat. I did my field placement in baking and it was all about speed, precision, and equality. The bakers would get up at 2:00 a.m in the morning and work there for 12 hours or more. I loved the Baking and Pastry program, but I hated the Culinary Arts program because the chef instructors were not particularly very nice to me. I was not treated fairly and they marked me far lower than what I deserved. I was very poor at presentation and cleaning meat and fish and chopping vegetables evenly. What I look for for food in restaurants is taste more than presentation. I still bake and decorate cakes, cookies, pies, and cupcakes, but I do it as a hobby and I bake for my family, neighbors, and my church especially the homeless women. The reason that I continued baking as a hobby because my baking instructors and the people in my field placement gave me more confidence and said that I was improving unlike the Culinary arts program. People are also paid very little for the amount of hard work which they do in restaurants and bakeries.

Hearing that majoring in computer animation is bad is making me go "OH SHIIIII". Well the real reason why i ended up in "Art School" is because the one I'm in promises to help me find a job and doesn't just kick me out to the curb. My teachers do care a lot and i also hate to see other people that can barely draw good attending the school. Im in it for the experience to see what schools are telling everyone, see the competition and i am studying something that didn't know anything about before going in it. turns out 3d modeling is easy as shit.

As a Digital Artist/Interactive Designer for over 10 years , I would say yeah I didn't need a degree to learn the things that I do...... but the degree does help, especially during interviews, some employers do ask what school you go to or if you went to a decent school they would say Ahh I know that school..... and I heard that some HR workers sometime skip over no degree applicants before they even get to your portfolio.. Also some jobs require a degree even in the digital art field particularly if you're going for a position where you manage other artist like art director or creative director .. I even seen one company asking for a masters degree , but this was rare ,, most ask for a BFA... But over all the majority just care about your Experience and Portfolio which is the final say in if you get hired not the degree.. but having one does helps than not. Also Computer Science is another degree where you can learn everything online ..... but why is it still ranked so high? even if you make good money, the degree it self shouldn't be so high. on your stem list... there are plenty of people here on youtube who learned everything about computer science and programming online.

personally, can't any degrees with math cus math is hard, and I don't want anyone's life in my hands when I'm so clumsy and forgetful. totally forgot about business degrees until recently. just don't know what I'd do with a business degree. I settled on Graphic design and hopefully UX design as a middle ground between money and my comfort zone. sure I could learn some of it online but I think I would benefit more going for a degree since I'd like to explore other things too while in college and I have a hard time finding either right resources or keeping up with it after it starts getting hard. plus it just looks better to get a degree, if I don't end up in it I was going to go into HR which doesn't really care which degree you have as long as you have one. might even wrap right back around into graphic design that route if I presented something while working HR

I know I’m late to the conversation, but I just discovered this video today and boy, do I have stuff to say regarding art degrees. Art has always been my passion so when I was 18 and fresh out of high school (READ: naive as hell lol), I went to college to get an Associate of Arts degree. I had no idea what I wanted to do for a living, all I knew was that I wanted an art career. I’m surprised Associate of Arts wasn’t on this list because talk about useless. I couldn’t do anything with that degree, so I eventually went back to school to major in K-12 Art Education. Big mistake. After graduating, I couldn’t find a job locally so I ended up taking a completely unrelated job that only required a high school diploma, just because I needed something to pay the bills. So I agree about Art Education being a useless degree. Then I went back to school a third time, this time to get a Commercial Art Technology certification so that I could do graphic design. Not a degree necessarily, but still useless. So after many years of wasting my time and money, I’m now in my 40s and planning to go to school for a more practical, in demand job because I’m not a trust fund baby and I don’t want to be self employed. Sorry for the long winded comment, I just had a lot to say.

Our student loans here are nowhere near as evil as yours.
    There is 3% interest (roundabouts)
You only pay back your loan if you make £25k plus which I think is a bit over $30k dollars
If you become disabled, permanently sick or die the loan is written off.
After 30 years, the loan is written off if you haven't paid.
If you are unemployed or have a job that pays less than $30k you don't pay back at all.

ibrahim abdullah It’s almost the same here in Australia. However it’s $45K for each taxable income year and below that amount we don’t pay back either. We don’t have interest, just every June/July, we have an inflation rate (1-2%) added to the total amount of debt the student has collected.
The limit is 100K of student debt for all students except for those doing Medicine, Aviation, Pharmaceutical degrees etc, it’s 150K. The student debt only gets written off if you pass away, we don’t have that 30 years loan write off thing you guys have.

I can still do my passion in my free time (animals and wildlife), while still having a good degree.

That way you still work on what you love and it’s easier to find a job.

Do a video on For Profit schools and how to tell the scammy ones from the good ones. There are a few for profit schools out there that do care about the quality of education their students are getting but it's hard for most people to tell the difference. Also-make a point to mention that 90% of the time, if you have your heart set on working in say culinary arts or cosmetology- the local trade school/community college will provide you a far better bang ($$$ and education wise) than say Le Gordon Blue or private run beauty school.
