  • The FAA has provided off airport guidance through the Alaska FSDO FAAST team through a guide. In this video I cover the information in this guider and show how you can fly unmarked and off field safely. It all starts out with instruction and practice that leads to a better knowledge of your aircraft followed by sound decision making.
Link to Guide all charts can be found in this guide.

Another great Video Scooter! A little trick I learned about wind speed is to time the distance flown from Threshold to Threshold in opposite directions at a constant airspeed. The difference in time can be calculated to show the wind. This would be a handy chart to come up with so you didn't have to do the math while in the air.

That would be a great chart to have.. since you're making runs in both directions anyway, It could have the crosswind and the headwind component. Thanks for watching the video!

Great video. I really like the 70KIAS idea for crossing at medium alt as it gives you crosswind and length of field.
An idea for learning to judge the size of obstacles is to take a known item (basketball) and place it in a location you can easily find. If you fly over it at 500' and 1000' you'll see that it looks pretty small and can compare it to other known items (That rock is the size of my head!). Fly Safe.

Thank you for commenting and thanks for the input. If you're using one second per hundred ft it's 60 knots, or 70 mph. The idea of looking down to identify items from 1,000 or 500 ft is something glider pilots use. Fantastic idea.

My office is near the end of the runway of VLL and hearing the planes a couple hundred feet above is daily inspiration …maybe one day I’ll get to fly out of there after work

Great video scooter, with some practical advice for assessing the suitability of an off-field landing spot. Although I don't currently operate off-airport, I do operate off uncharted airports. This information will be very useful if I venture off-airport in the future.

Thanks for watching. In Michigan nearly all of our flying us uncharted, unless you know someone with land and not a lot of tress.

I think this video was super interesting! Just a few tips that’ll take your channel to the next level:
Maybe a reworked intro? It doesn’t really catch my attention
Some quiet ambient background noise would help a lot
