Founded in 1997 in Cedar City Utah, we are a 501c3 non-profit
organization dedicated to wildlife rescue, rehabilitation and education.
    🔹Rescue, Rehabilitate and Release 🔹
The Southwest Wildlife Foundation of Utah (SWF) cares for more than 100
sick, injured and orphaned native wildlife annually. Restoring them to
health and returning them to the wild is our primary goal.
🔹 Informing, Educating and Inspiring 🔹
The SWF provides over 100 educational programs reaching over 30,000
people annually. We believe providing educational outreach programs to
schools, scout groups and community events, with focus on children and
families, will make the greatest impact in preserving our wildlife, the
environment, our public lands and our resources for future generations
    to enjoy.
    🔹 Martin Tyner 🔹
Since age twelve, with a bird on his arm, Martin has captivated
audiences sharing his knowledge and experience of his wildlife friends.
At age nineteen, Martin was hired as curator of birds of prey at Busch
Gardens, CA. He also worked in the movie and television industry
training big cats, elephants, primates, sea mammals and raptors.
“One of my greatest childhood fantasies was the desire to create a
personal friendship with a wild eagle. I found myself with a love and
    fascination for these powerful creatures.”
Martin Tyner is a federally licensed falconer, eagle falconer, wildlife
rehabilitator, wildlife propagator, and wildlife and environmental
    educator.
He has been providing wildlife and environmental programs throughout the
western United States, to schools, scouts and community groups for over
    fifty years.
“Grandpa believed in a very simple philosophy; that a person should get
up every morning and do good. Doing good means that you do well for
others and doing well means that you do good for yourself. There is
nothing wrong with doing well, but Grandpa always believed in doing
    good.”

Personally in this case I see the 'quality of life' argument as specious, or anthropomorphic -- a non-flying eagle could become accustomed to it, and live out its life in a sanctuary, the bird was apparently otherwise healthy -- it would never have 'quality of life' thoughts -- of course in another sense I understand the decision

@@eah8101 Some places have specific laws about wild animals that require euthanizing if they can't be rehabbed or used in educational services.
It's not the same as it is with domesticated animals, who can live in "sanctuary" farms and the like.

If this eagle can't grow enough feathers to fly normally, then maybe hopefully it will have the chance to live as an educational ambassador if its feet don't have the same talon problems that its brother did.

I agree. There will for sure be some educational place or may be a zoo, where they need an eagle. Why not keep it there. This 'quality' of life thing, and 'humanely' put it out of its misery was the best decision, and all other reasons given are a bit too ''ínhumane' actually. Always support 'No Kill' shelters. And, also I agree to the very first caller's question. Although I do agree that after two years of rehabilitation, probably it became too much of cost going forward. That is the actual reason for this decision, and is totally justified as well. But the reason given for ''humanely'etc , I don't agree.

Your care for these birds is amazing. I'm a former dog groomer (funnily enough) with a love for birds especially bald eagles due to the various nest cams/channels that have allowed everyone to learn more about them. I really hope this young eagle has better luck healing, it sounds like a truly unfortunate genetic condition.
I very much agree that humans should do everything possible to help repair the damage we have and continue to cause these animals. Thank you so much for sharing your work, it is truly an inspiration to do good in this world.

Beautiful and moving video...I completely agree with the responsibility that human beings must assume regarding nature and the damage that we continually do to it: any gesture of respect, love, compassion is a way to compensate at least in part for what we destroy. And those who say "why spend money and time to cure an animal that has little hope?", are like those people who say "why do you help an animal and not send money for children in Africa?". In both cases, these are the words of someone who will certainly never help an animal (even if it had a high chance of making it), will not send money to Africa and will not help his neighbor if he needed it.
Thank you for what you do Martin: you are an inspiration for the many who with their very small gestures are able to change their daily life, their little corner of the world....and many daily life and small corners, one at a time, can change the world...
    A big hug from Italy.

I'm so thankful that you were able to get the center up and running as quickly as you did! It's a testament to both yours and Susan's determination. My concern is the breeding pair that is producing these eagles with these horrible genetic defects. Do you happen to know if Utah Fish and Game is doing anything to locate the breeding pair? I'm wondering if lead poisoning might be involved with these continued genetic defects from this pair. I also wonder how many offspring with genetic defects they're producing that aren't showing as many symptoms. So, they aren't being discovered but they are making their way into the wild to spread these genetic defects.😢

Too bad about Eagle #1, but it was the best decision. It was never going to have any kind of life that would have made it happy or even satisfy its instincts to be an eagle. If it had been left in the wild, it's fate would have been far more cruel than the peaceful end it got.
Also, I can't help but spend the video looking at Piper. Such a beautiful and cute bird, just sitting quietly, looking around, interested in everything.

It about saving a a natural life. You can. Or put a price on that! It's like a living creature human or lets say a person even, it like saying why not let that person die, he won't make it, and the time and expensive is too great. When others could survive and be saved that we know will live. Martin is not that way. Best to save, nurse a life back to health and molt and then set them free. There is never enough eagles and they a symbol of majestic characteristics. The Bible talks about eagles a lot. We are to soar like eagles or the eagles keen eyesights. It's flight and target is sure. It is also the only bird that can fly in the highest altitude where no other can. That bird was so weak, he couldn't hold his head up to save his life. It had given up. So I would prefer a try knowing someone didn't give up on me. This one and the famous story on injured bald eagle is my favorite. And all the hope and prayers and help, that you martin and Susan see the desire and dream come true for the wildlife facility
I would have only hoped you could have open to the public, maybe 5.00 to 10 dollar charge for tours and the merchandise gift shop also could help the public buy and provide for the business

If the bird did not reproduce, how would it weaken the gene pool? -- if that is a concern, given that two birds from the same nest (with the same parents?) showed the problem, then you would want to consider eliminating the wild, nesting birds, because they are actively reproducing, and apparently genetic carriers of this catastrophic abnormality -- ?
