First off. Happy new year everyone. Thank you for watching. I just got home and watched the video after uploading and noticed a mistake. Ugh. At the 11:25 mark, I describe turning EAST to ascend Sugarloaf Peak. This is incorrect. You turn WEST at the pseudo peak to follow the single track use trail to the summit. Anyway, I hope y'all have a great new year and all of your hiking endeavors are accomplished. Happy hikin'!
Thank you! and correct! Canelo is a Hungarian Vizsla. He handled all three days like a champ. Super spry on the trail back to the car. HIs longest hike was 26 miles with 6k vert. I'm pretty sure I can get him to 50k distance, but I need to get myself there first. lol. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Aar Jay - great video! I owe my affinity for Falling Rock Canyon to you and all those Fool's Traverse adventures! Great job including the turn around rather than just a one and done video. Whenever in doubt, trust your gut and come back another day. Happy New Year!
Love it! Thank you, Michael. Yeah good training but the wind and rain made canelo uncomfortable. I was hoping we'd get above it at some point, but it didn't look like it was happening. Happy to come back another day. Hope all is well with you
Nice hike and beautiful view! Canelo looks so happy out there… I appreciate what you said about knowing your pets limitations. I work with animals and Ive seen dogs on hikes that really should not be out there :/ Happy New Year!.. also RIP Jacket!
I've only had him a little over a year, and I definitely could be more careful with him on these treks. But that's the cost of being an adventure dog. He's literally bred for two things: work and belly rubs. Haha. Thanks for the jacket condolences. And for leaving a comment! !
I love your off-trail route finding and scrambling skills. And of course your dog is amazing, such a perfect hiking companion for you! I think I'll stick to the trail though, this would be too difficult for me.
Thank you, that's really kind of you to say. Canelo is an absolute pleasure to be with on the trail. Yeah, the cross-country stuff is not for everyone, but i love it. Thanks for watching
I really didn't want to miss the opportunity for a good cloud inversion, especially since I was filming. While I'm well aware of how to keep myself safe and comfortable in these conditions, canelo is another story. Still learning! Thanks for watching and for the comment.
Not really much exposure. Most people would claim that this is purely a class 2 scramble at best. It's a great training route. Thanks for watching and for commenting!
Been wanting to get back up to Ontario but I'm a fair weather hiker LOL. Had quite a bear encounter on Icehouse last August! This route looks shorter than staying on Icehouse but more work I'm sure. Thanks for the awesome video and happy New Year!!
@ I was hiking icehouse with a buddy and all of a sudden this big black bear (maybe 400-500 lbs) was around 20 yards ahead of us right off the path. We were making noise trying to get it moving along so we could pass but it just hung out there for what felt like eternity watching us. It finally moved off the path just far enough where we felt comfortable passing and once we passed it starting following so my buddy turned around and held up his trekking poles and started yelling and the bear casually walked off. This was the only bear encounter I’ve ever had and it was pretty close so I was nervous but it was all good! I’m planning on some over nighters up there once the weather warms up again. I really love that area!
@LagunaRider1961 Thanks. Interesting story. Over the decades I've had a few bear encounters, nothing too serious, but I try to be vigilant and exercise caution around them. They're unpredictable so it's best to play it safe
Thanks for the good story and for watching. Glad the bear backed off. And i hope you get your backpacking trek up here! Also check out lytle creek. The other more remote side of the canyon. Lots of good camping back there, but very buggy in the summer.
I've hiked Ice House Canyon many times, but I had never heard of the Falling Rock Canyon. Thanks for sharing! Could you tell if all of the Bear Canyon Trail burned, or just the lower part of the trail before you reach pine trees? -Your dog looks like a loyal friend!
Any time! Definitely check it out some time. Lots of fun. I don't remember if Bear Canon was burned past the lower section. The clouds might have been blocking my view. Hopefully, it's saved. I imagine most of it would be. Thanks for the comment and for watching. Canelo is definitely a great hiking partner.
I did it once on the way down from Ontario peak. Not recommended ) Nice part on top and then some climbing down the canyon. Could be better on the way up.
Happy New Year! Thank you for another great video. Those arrows really bother me because I’m an old codger who been climbing this sporty route since long before my hair went gray. I don’t want to start a “bolt cutting” war, but those arrows may not be there for long ;-)
Thanks for the heads up and the well wishes. I am definitely familiar with that sentiment. The area has been changing quite a bit since I started hiking it even ten years ago, and as you said, people have been climbing it for years without markers. Let me know if I can help to remove them in any way. I wouldn't know where to start.
Ive organized over 40 group outings in the San Gabriel Mountains, but tbh i think those days are behind me. My work schedule doesn't align with weekends off anymore.
That actually sounds pretty interesting. I've been to Sheep Flat before, but we avoided this ridge and now that I'm looking it up, I'd definitely rather do this route. Thank you.
Haha. It's definitely MUCH harder to describe routes without Cardinal direction. And then if you're using a map, you'd need to rely on the locator and GPX which means you're on your phone the whole time. I do enough of that at home. Thanks for watching and always commenting. Happy new year!
Do you ever ascend FRC all the way? I like doing that, but there’s some Class 3 that would be tough for the dog. I’ve also glissaded much of it in good snow. Always a little tricky since there tends to be unstable snow bridges at the bottom of the canyon.
Nice! I've had a friend go past the second falls while lost. he said it was a good challenge. He was actually late for a group hike and decided to take it on anyway. I've never personally done it, but it sounds rad. A friend and I came down short-cut ridge from Kelly camp once. That was fun. Plopped ourselves into sheep flat before dropping into icehouse. That was fun. But not much scrambling besides some chossy granite at the bottom. Thanks for the comment!

As an editor, just wanted to say I love the cutting. Good energy and pace. Keeps things moving, and fun. I usually stick to the trails, but on some of the less travelled peaks, use trails quickly become no trails, so your route finding tips are extremely helpful.
High praise coming from a professional! I definitely am aware that the cuts can get a little dirty if I overuse them, which is why sometimes I try to sneak in overlapping footage to hide them visually. Overall, I think its worth the effort for the exact reason you mentioned. I have to assume that the vast majority of viewers do not want to hear me struggling for breath while trying to find the words to describe the route. Gotta look like I know what I'm doing! haha. Thanks again.

"AREA DOG DESTROYS WINDBREAKER" - Great video as usual!
Haha. Headline od the century.
Thanks for watching!
Your dog is a trooper ! Is he a Vizsla ? Beautiful endurance hike 3 days in a row ?? Wow !! 🙌🏻🙌🏻

Epic video and hike(s)😂
Your dog is friggin’ amazing!! New follower!
Thanks for watching and the kind words.
Canelo definitely keeps me on my toes.
I also enjoy the challenge of finding routes he's capable of.
Love to see that waterfall at 2:46 when it's flowing.
Oh yeah! Amd the upper falls is even nicer during the winter spring.
Thanks for watching!

Great video!! Amazing views wow! Thank you so much and canelo is a trooper lol
Thank you for watching. Yeah canelo is definitely awesome for putting up with this three days in a row. I gave him some steak on day 3.
Aww canelo
Fantastic. You have to stop doing these beast hikes multiple times haha. Another great video. And wise words.
I really didn't want to miss the opportunity for a good cloud inversion, especially since I was filming. While I'm well aware of how to keep myself safe and comfortable in these conditions, canelo is another story. Still learning! Thanks for watching and for the comment.
Appreciate the pointers for improving one’s route finding skills. For the route you finally took is there much exposure?
Not really much exposure. Most people would claim that this is purely a class 2 scramble at best. It's a great training route. Thanks for watching and for commenting!

Tell me more about your bear encounter. I've yet to hike the Ice House Canyon area even though I'm only 32 miles SW.

do a video on kimchi ridge please! i think its in ice house but a little further up
That actually sounds pretty interesting. I've been to Sheep Flat before, but we avoided this ridge and now that I'm looking it up, I'd definitely rather do this route. Thank you.
Great tips on being self- reliant...GPS should stand for, Get Properly Skilled! Some don't even know Cardinal direction.
