Sespe Wilderness Backpacking: Alder Creek to Johnston Ridge
Last Spring (2024), I set out to find an interesting loop option that included Johnston Ridge and the Sespe Hot Spring, which is located in the Los Padres National Forest, Sespe Wilderness. I looked into Alder Creek and found that there were far more interesting features in this part of the Sespe Wilderness than Hot Springs, especially considering I had already been to the pools before.
This video features clips from two separate outings. The first outing took place on May 20th, 2024 and the second took place on September 24th, 2024.
Total Distance: 29 miles

IRON MOUNTAIN VIA NORTH RIDGE | SAN GABRIEL MOUNTAINS | ANGELES NATIONAL FOREST
Переглядів 2,5 тис.Місяць тому
On August 27th, 2024, I took a hike up the North Ridge of Iron Mountain via the infamous East Fork San Gabriel River in Southern California's Angeles National Forest. The hike starts at the Heaton Flat trailhead, and follows the creek 4.5 miles to the Bridge to Nowhere. At this point, any sort of trail becomes washed away by annual floods, overgrown poison oak, and a lack of any visitors beside...

On the outskirts of the Whitney Zone, towering over the the North fork Lone Pine Creek as well as the Sequoia National Park, sits a 14,094 foot granite behemoth named Mount Russell. Known mostly for being one of California's famous 14ers, as well as the exposed ridge near its peak, Mount Russell is overshadowed in size and popularity by its neighboring peak Mount Whitney (the tallest mountain i...
MOUNT WILLIAMSON VIA WEST FACE - SHEPHARD PASS | SIERRA NEVADA

California's second tallest peak and the sixth tallest peak in the contiguous United States, Mount Williamson (14,379 ft.) stands tall above the John Muir Wilderness of the Inyo National Forest. Although the mountain is far less popular than its taller neighbor to the south (Mt. Whitney), its easiest approach includes a relatively steep class 1-2 ascent for over 11 miles and 7,000 feet of verti...

A while back, my Mom mentioned that she enjoyed watching my hiking videos while she did cardio at the gym, and she would also watch similar Disneyland walkthrough videos as well. I decided I would make a complete POV walkthrough of a hike up to Mount Baldy for her to workout with. This took place on May 9th, 2024. Some audio is edited to remove excessive commands toward Canelo. This was shot on...
Triplet Rocks: The Most Remote Peak in SoCal

Located in the middle of the San Gabriel Wilderness, towering over the Devils Canyon, West Fork, and Bear Creek is an unofficial summit unknown to most local hikers due to its remote location as well as its tremendously difficult approach. Peak 6151', otherwise known as Triplet Rocks is named after the three enormous boulders that make its prominence. The out-and-back cross country excursion be...

This is fantastic. Thank you for sharing this expedition. Absolutely kickass work.
Canelo is back!! He is such a good boy. Gotta make sure you carry Benadryl next time. Bees/wasp allergy can be real bad, I’m glad you survived. The pictographs are very interesting, thanks for taking us to your adventure because not everyone has the capability to hike and see these artifacts. Happy Trails.
have u ever been to the falls ?
Not yet. It's in the closure area, so probably not in the books for me. But it totally looks like a hidden gem. Would love to at least get close. Maybe in another life.
@@trvrsoutdoors i’ll check it out
It's wonderful to watch your exertions. I too have done some of your deliriously delightful routes. ( North side of Iron Mtn...masochist much? ) It was simply 55 years ago. My best life memories are of what you are capturing with your GoPro. Gone are the days of lugging single lens reflex cameras to get quality stills. I like your timing with the camera. Keep it up young man.
55 years ago. I would love to have the opportunity to see this unique place then. It's funny that you brought up the camera. 5 years ago, I tried to make these videos, and the technology still wasn't there. Gopro's footage was still too shakey, and the batteries would die in mildly cold weather. Once the 10 came out, I decided to try again. Same for mobile devices. I'm definitely grateful to have the opportunity to share these outings, especially with people like you who understand what these places mean, let alone how difficult they are to reach. Cheers.
I check out what you are doing, and it gives me ideas on where to go next. Keep up the amazing content. 👍
I'm happy to help guide the adventure! Thank you for watching. I definitely have some more content coming that will inspire knuckle dragging awe and beauty.
nice work on the descent. keep up the good work and love for the sierra!
Thank you for watching all the way through! So much to explore. I will definitely keep up both!
Going up the established trail of Skyline Ridge is hard enough! Here you are blazing a trail on that rocky ridge. Much respect!
Thank you very much.. Something about the inhospitable nature of these places keeps me coming back. Just an absolute blast and no one to hear me cry.
I really appreciate you showing the parts going back down!!!
Thanks for the update, your info can help other trail & mountain climbers aswell. The damage done to the So . Let us all thank these brave Individuals who risk their lives every day.We salute you & appreciate your dedication to your services!🙏👲👌👮👍🚒💪🧑⚕️
Looks awesome. Do you have an AllTrails link or GPX file?
Any idea if the Baldy skihut survived?
Tried it today....got swallowed up in the willows above Lower Boy Scout Lake and tried to skirt them on the south side but hit steep, impassible slabs. The advice to head to the north side of all that bushwhacking is spot on here.....I can attest from experience. Will be back to try the exciting part of the climb -- the ridge itself -- again in the future. Nice video!
Thank you for checking it out, and bummer I couldn't give you the advice before you effort! Same thing happened to me once. Good luck on your next endeavor
@@trvrsoutdoors Thanks, and keep making your awesome videos! :-)
I'm not a good mountaineer. Have you climbed up Mt. Whitney mtnering route and turned right. Is it a possible long traverse?
I'd imagine you'd hit some 4th or 5th class granite spires up there. The Secor book mentions that you can ascend the whitney russell pass and cross into the arctic lake basin, so I'm sure you can make a day of exploring that area. But you'd have to look do some additional research to find out more. Someone MUST have done it.
You are truly awesome!
Aw man, thanks! Just trying to share a little bit of the local range.
Your athleticism is so impressive! Love seeing your adventures. Your videos are very impressive and I have sent them to my students at Caltech who also hike longer distances. I have been active with Summits on the Air which a fun way to combine peak bagging with ham radio. There are many peaks in the Sierra which have not been activated with the radio… your call sign could be on them! Best of luck!
Wow, that looked brutal. And so cool. How did you manage getting down with so little water left?
A lot of the reason I completed this hike during this heat wave was because I had left a cache on Allison saddle earlier in the year. It had some expensive crampons and water, which I planted for a spring accent on the San Antonio Ridge Traverse. When the Fork Fire happened, I thought I would lose my gear and decided to retrieve it before the next fire. There were two smart water bottles stashed with the winter gear. I would have made it without the bottles since I only ended up drinking half one, but it being there helped me feel secure about the entire ascent. If that wasn't there I might have turned back. I'm so glad I made thr decision to retrieve the gear since my hunch was right, and now this entire area will be under closure for the next two to three years.
The good news is the brush is gone.
Ouch haha. Too soon
Cool! Live local and have always hiked elsewhere. Nice to see SGV trails. Knarly peak!
They're worth checking out. Especially now, before they're all gone :(
You’re an inspiration to me bro
Thank you! It's definitely a beautiful area to behold if you can access it.
Where can I get those teleportation gloves? 😄 You’re always doing epic route! Hardcore!
Act now and we'll send you 3 pairs for just $19.99 +shipping and handling!
Thank you so much for posting this! My heart has been broken since I watched Iron Mountain burning (from Ganesha Hills, 09/10/2024).. As soon as the winter rains come, the East Fork will fill with burnt mountain run-off, and likely the surviving canyon bottom ecosystem will be buried. I’m glad to got up there when you did.
Thank you for mentioning this. It's definitely been a rollercoaster of emotions. I was actually supposed to head to the Sierra when I did this trek. The weather wasn't even good, and I still gravitated toward this route. I'm glad I did. One last goodbye.
This is one of my favorite!!
A classic fun acramble!
Nice job! The Narrows looked like a fun part.. Also, I’m with you on that littering rant! One of my pet peeves
I don't want to voice too many opinions on here since some people might get turned off, but damn! This is ridiculous, and the laziness is undeniable. Thanks for watching! The narrows is absolutely a great place to swim and hang out. Spent some time getting footage there to try and capture the magic. Glad you liked it.
I took my ex-girlfriend up the Leatherneck a couple years back and we broke up shortly after. Nice capture brother, and really cool watching fellow madmen carve out their own niche in the adventure content space. Bravo!
Oh, man. Hopefully, it's for the better. I could totally see someone getting overwhelmed up there. Thank you. Trying to carve out a niche anyway. We'll see if it pays off. Gonna give it another year and see how UA-cam treats me.
@@trvrsoutdoors Well whatever your end goal may be, I do hope you reach it. In the meantime, you are providing good value and content to all the adventurers of SoCal and beyond. The algorithm just recently put you in my feed, so I'm sure you will hit some kind of critical mass very soon. Best of luck mate.
Damn man! Incredible video - looks like a sufferfest! Congrats on making it - has to be one of the most challenging in So. Cal.
Yeah, so I realize now that the thumbnail is a little clickbaity. I'm going to change it. This is definitely the hardest single peak day hike in the san Gabriel mountains, and up there with the hardest in SoCal, but it doesn't compare to Snow Creek or folly ridge.
Thanks for watching! Appreciate the comment too.
That place is all on fire right now. It will be closed for at least two years.
Yes. Definitely unfortunately to see. I'm glad I was able to do this one more time since it'll probably be completely different when it opens again.
@@trvrsoutdoorsGood job on that ascent and all your adventures. Nice work on documenting them all and sharing👍
Another dope climb and video! Cheers man! 🍻
Thank you!
Great job summiting and cool rugged scramble! Thanks for showcasing this area which is sadly burning right now in the Bridge Fire. Would have liked to try this route, maybe someday
It might be easier In a couple years. Thr sweet spot would be after the storms have made that settle but before the poodle dog bush grows.
Nice going man! Too bad I could never try this. I'm extremely allergic to poison oak.
Ugh. Yeah, the entire brushy section is about a mile, and it's mostly avoidable, but it might no beworth it.
@@trvrsoutdoors Yea, I get absolutely destroyed. I hope to never run into that stuff again.
@luciano136 I get it. I'm not extremely allergic to it, but I definitely have been covered in it before, and I can totally understand if just a little has major effects on someone.
@@trvrsoutdoors My arm was so bad it would soak a towel with fluid in an hour. Then got infected, had to take steroids, didn't sleep for two weeks, etc. It was such a shit show LOL
Looks a little more exciting than Ross, aye buddy? :)
Haha. I kept eyeing Ross, thinking i could hit it from the east fork (which I did years ago). Maybe after the closure us lifted.
@@trvrsoutdoors I was there with ya! -Vince :)
@@Vincentrayjuarez yoooo! Haha.
Bro! You are my hero. Thanks for showing this and not sugar coating it. Nice work!
Any time! Thanks for watching. This route isn't much for instruction as you really just need to plow through the entire mountain, which is why I ended up leaning toward showcasing the experience rather than a guide style video. Just brutal.
Bro - that was some shady ascent with unreliable holds. Glad that you made it safely but do be careful. Appreciate the video
Agreed. And thank you. As much as I love our local mountains, they are very unforgiving.
Amazing, keep it up😎
Thank you very much!
Incredible effort!
Thank you! My body aches. Haha
That was insane brother! Keep up the great videos.
Much appreciated!
nice work! Thanks for documenting such a unique route.
Glad I could get it done before the fired scorched this entire area. A good memory to say the least.
It must be tough considering you’re the guy who casually drank two IPAs on his way up C2C with barely a sweat. Super impressed with your efforts mate. Well done.
That was Snow Creek! Haha. We drank way more beer during the c2c effort. But thanks. I was a little more fit then, and one of the beers was an NA. Plus this heat was so bad. Slowed to a crawl.
I already gave it a like, and will watch it tonight in its 19:39 entirety. Love your videos and your tenacity... Adventure on!
Thank you as usual! Appreciate the support.
I just read the report for this hike on Reddit and thought, "Who would do THAT hike?" Now it makes sense... Anyone else think we found Ronnie Radke's doppelganger.
Hahaha. I can see it, I guess. But that guy's Wikipedia page scares the crap out of me.
Great video! You totally nailed the point, especially when you mentioned how frustrating minors can be. Honestly, I couldn't agree more. They're always out here causing chaos, thinking they're invincible, like they own the world! I mean, what’s with their constant need for snacks? And don’t even get me started on their obsession with memes... it’s like they’re a different species! We should ban them from WiFi after 6 p.m. or something. Anyway, awesome content, keep it up!
No one is going to be able to hike this for a while. The whole area is currently nuking in the Bridge Fire. Glad you got it in before it was destroyed.
100% agree. I'm super grateful for this, and I'm happy to share such a unique trek since hardly anyone ever made it out here. Thank you.
One good thing the fire will kill most of the rattlesnakes! You can extend the hike by going east up the ridge to Mt. Baldy.
@user-vd1uz3dj8l if I'm doing the SART, I'll do it the normal way tyvm. Unless I'm backpacking. Haha then maybe.
Been enjoying your videos brother thanks for posting… keep up the good work and be safe. This is one hike I can’t ever see myself wanting to do, glad to be able to watch you do it from my couch 😂
Ha! This is definitely not a sought-after endeavor. I'm happy to bring you along for the adventure. Thanks for watching
Excellent! If it ain't Class Four, then it was not a climb, it was a hike. I think John Muir and Norman Clyde both said it best but I might be mistaken . Nonetheless thanks for sharing. It takes a lot of work to do that and you have my gratitude for the work and video! 👍 Never climbed Williamson as a long time mountaineer..but as age catches up with me I might put it on my list now.
I'm not a climber, so I use the word interchangeably. I didn't realize that was such a big deal to climbers until recently. Just a habit. Thanks for watching and for the feedback!
@@trvrsoutdoors No harm no foul, just clarifying. Most mountaineers consider it a climb if you need a rope for protection (class 4+ ) and maybe a rappel. But there is really no definition to go by at all. You can call it anything you want. Free speech after all.
Wow! Just Wow!
Thank you!
Another awesome video🧗 ! The view is absolutely⛰️ amazing.Stay safe & hydrated.Your the Man🏋️ ! (Hey , where's is the 🐕 ?A nice journey.Godspeed R.J. 😲💪

Another epic hike. I'm you are truly a bad ass! Love your hardcore hikes
Thank you so much for the kind words!
Holy smokes! Iron Mtn. North Ridge. In the heat? Super impressive man.
Thanks for recognizing that. I definitely pushed myself here with the heat. There were a couple of times I tried to take a break to cool down, only to find that I would just sweat more. I had no choice but to keep moving to reduce water loss. Insane.
Great video! BITD, I hiked Iron via Gold Dollar and Eagle Mine to San Antonio Ridge. Chossy 3rd class over to Iron - very scenic but a loss less difficult than the route you took. I have a suggested route for you - Islip Saddle, Hawkins, Copter Ridge, Iron Fork, Ross , Baden Powell and then back to the start. Thank you for posting these!
So I've ascended Ross vis the east fork (up its sw ridge) and descended via Ross gulch and iron fork. I wanted to do that again. I'll look at the map and see what I can put together. I appreciate the recommendation. Hopefully, the closure doesn't affect these areas. That route sounds solid.
epic route! thanks for putting this together. Didn't think North traverse up to Iron was possible.
Any time! Thank you for watching. It's possible and has been done by a select few weirdos.
i have been going to wrightwood lately. saw this scary ass looking mountain called "Iron Mountain". thanks for doing something my balls and knees would not be able to handle 👍
Ha! No problem. Thanks for watching.
Don't know if my knees could handle that one! Nice job!
I never really know until I get back to thr car. Haha. Thank you.
