I'm Portuguese and everytime I watch a video of yours I get excited to be living in my country! Does that make sense?! Because sometimes we really forget how great Portugal is and I do think a lot about getting out of the country but at the end of the day, we do have it all! Now... I definitely crave change and I'm definitely gonna go after some more info about living on the countryside and get out of the city! 😊
The same here! :) Sometimes we Portuguese don't value our country as much and it's a pity, because this is a small country, but really is a paradise :D
Fabiola - That makes us so happy to hear that our videos make you excited about your country!!! We love it here in Portugal! I think it's completely normal to forget about how great it is (as it is for most people when it comes to their home country), but we're happy to be a reminder for you!!! :) Thanks for watching!!!
I think the major concern is not to choose, but how to make a sustainable living in Portugal countryside. There are no major jobs available, and the few ones that are hiring, offer the minimum wage. And definitely what haunts me is: what will I do for a living when I'm 70? Because I'm sure that, as an immigrant, I'll not be retired. But in the end, living in a chill environment with plenty of nature around is too my goal. Happy dreams for all of us :)
I'm glad to know that you are exploring Portugal beyond Lisbon and enjoying it. You are already doing more than what some native Portuguese do! 😅 but yes, learning the portuguese language will make your experience in the countryside a lot better. Best of luck and have fun!
Cant wait to go to Portugal as soon as it opens again! We are starting the search for a spot. Country side close to the cities is our goal. Best of both worlds! Thanks for everything you do, guys!
@@OurRichJourney Wouldn’t mind meeting for “almoço” when we cross the pond. I will bring my Star Wars shirt collection, so we can find each other more easily :)
Country living all the way...until you mentioned the amazing food in Lisbon! Hahah! I’ll go with your “best of both worlds,” Amon. Thank you both again. You sold us on Portugal several hundred videos ago, but please keep ‘em coming! We love them and you always have fantastic new info to share! Very grateful.
Hehe! Yes - foodies will definitely like it in Lisbon! LOL! But, the best of both worlds is a good approach!!! :) We'll keep more videos coming! Excited to share the renovation on our downstairs kitchen soon (hopefully)!!! :)
We are currently expats in one of the most EXPENSIVE cities in the world with a plan to move to Portugal in 2025.... we are so very excited and are thankful to have such amazing resources available along the way. Keep living it up guys!
I am Portuguese, living by the linha de Cascais. And I feel so privileged!! So many beaches, close to Sintra (mountains and woodland) and 25 minutes away from Lisbon city center! I do hope one day to move to the countryside 🤩 always love your videos! Obrigada 🙏
We've met really great people here! I can imagine it's harder to get out and meet people now because of covid, but we've made connections with people! It also helps that we were active in sports (pre-covid), so that made it easier to meet people (and also meeting parents of our kids' friends). But, if you have a hobby that generally involves other people (like a group activity), it's a great way to meet people!
We were approved for our D7 Visa in 5 days. We are moving to Coimbra on May 15th. Looking forward to the new adventure!! Thank you so much for inspiring us!
Hi guys, I started watching your videos about 2 years ago when I was living in London with my partner and daughter. I'm Portuguese, but I was living in London for 17 years but with the dream of moving back to Portugal, which became a reality last year on March 6th 2020. I got a job as a Healthcare Worker within a month, and 8 months later (November 17th, I was able to buy my own property T2, in Barreiro. Now, we are pregnant with our 2nd baby and couldn't be happier. My 4 year-old keeps on saying that we are on vacation. Thank you so much for your video, you're an inspiration ☺️
You made a great decision. Once you get used to how calm and cosy the countryside is, there is no way back. Anyway, Portugal is not that big so you can always take the highway and visit the city for whatever you want or need.
Yes! It's so true! After living in the countryside, we decided to take a week vacation in Lisbon. We forgot that it feels much more cramped there! Hehe!
In Algarve there are a lot of golf courses and amazing beaches. It is also full of other expats, most of them from English speaking countries. So you might consider moving there.
Hey there Judith!!! Thank you for always checking in with us every Sunday and for commenting!!! 🤗 Hope you're doing well!!! P.S. - the food is yummy!!!
I really hope you're happy as you film it. Because Portugal is huge... needs good people as you guys. If you ever come to Famalicão. (1st division football team, near Braga. you have a dinner and bed.) Cheers. Not major city but it has some Rome arks and bridges. Also, Leica and Continental.... And about 30% celtic culture of Portugal. So...yeah. 18km to Póvoa de Varzim or Vila do Conde.
I just love your house and property looks so soothing /relaxing I have to tell you you have some stiff competition I’ve been spending my time watching the juniors they’re amazing what a great job you guys have done with them thank you
Thanks for your videos. My wife and I traveled to Madrid and Lisbon in October. Portugal(Lisbon) was our favorite. Neither of us are “crowd people”, so a country environment is our preference. We are planning to return in late February early March for 3 weeks to house hunt. We have a house in Hua Hin Thailand about a kilometer to the ocean, so being near the beach isn’t important.
The wood over and under fire place takes me back. we lost our house to the bank, that piece of wood was the most expensive piece of the house. Had key signatures of my gramma and gramps.. It was so expensive bank took it. It was hand made me and my dad. ..
Jasmine - seriously, YOU are the best! I'm seeing multiple comments from you in the same video!!! That is so sweet of you!!! Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!!

I too use to work for government, and I don’t want worry 15-30 years from now where money is going to come from. I am almost 33 and I want to live freely with my family and leave something for my grandchildren as well. And start financial literacy. I am trying to learn to invest in myself, my family and opportunities.
Hello! We would like to move to Portugal and thinking about getting your course. I am 70 and my husband is 74, does your course cover that demographic? For example, I understand you need to be under 70 to get private health insurance, do you have suggestions for that issue? We really enjoyed your video on where to rent in Lisbon, that is where were thinking about living. We can also use help and guidance for the D7 visa. What is covered in your course? Thank you in advance, you have such a lovely family!
I am sorry to ask because I know I watched your original video when you first bought your house....but I have seen so many Portugal videos since then, I forgot. We are looking at being on an acre or more and want to have a garden and fruit trees like you do....could you please remind me where your lovely house is located?
I love your channel and have watched several of your videos. Retiring to Portugal 🇵🇹 would be a dream, I would love to leave the US. One thing I like about you two is how you are always smiling, especially while the other is speaking ☺️ too cute 🥰
So wonderful. Kind of a tough choice. I grew up in the country then lived in Downtown Montreal (a great city). I think my perfect place is a small home & garden (I love your trees) near a walkable beach side village... You both keep motivating me to get there one day.
welcome to Portugal! even in countryside, try to made de Nacional route EN 222, stop in every small villages, eat the tipical portuguese food and wines on each place, and enjoy the views...i think you will love! congrats for another great video!
Your HOW TO MOVE TO PORTUGAL course is ErThang!!!/All inclusive/highly detailed...🔥👏🏽❤️👌🏾😊👍🏽 in every category I had questions about) Last week I watched a Expat Lisbon content creator sharing the mistakes they made (and now may have to leave). Sooo glad I took your course so when I relocate, I'll be one and done. Hmmm city or countryside💡'FIRED' People's Problems 💃🕺 ❤️can't wait!
C Ann - you are just the sweetest! Thank you so much for all of your kind words (on all of our videos)!!! Now you have to decide . . . city or countryside?! :) Hmmm . . . :)
Aloha Amon and Christina, Love your videos and looking forward to moving to Portugal and using your program when we retire. Won’t be a while, but we’re grateful for your insights and support
Hi there! I have been watching many your other Portugal videos for a week now, but first time to comment here. WOW, Thank you!! I have been quite educated with ExPat living in Portugal from your videos! It will be about 8 long years before I can retire, but I am already thinking ahead of retiring to Portugal. Having grown up in the Los Angeles area (about 4 miles from the Pacific) for 35 years and lived for the last 19 years in the rural mid-south, I have seen both worlds clearly. I am in introvert, so I will be looking for the countryside of Portugal to retire. Looking for a quiet place on a hill overlooking the ocean in the far distance is my dream. Might have to compromise a little on that, but we will see. Always looking forward to more of your videos on ExPat living in Portugal! I know there has to be more to tell. Thanks, Jeff.
Regarding the food part, I think you would do great living in the north, maybe in the Vale do Sousa area, Esposende and maybe Matosinhos. Really calm and near great food.
Amon and Christina, thank you for your great content! 🙏🏽 You are my inspiration for what is possible for my family’s future on the to path to reach financial independence.
We have been watching your videos for awhile now. Our bags are packed - trailer is nearly full and we will be on our way down from Germany tomorrow. Thanks for making these videos. We will let you know how things go for us. We will be nearly equal distance from both major cities...we already know we do not want to live in either one...just not city people I guess.
I've been tracking different areas via idealista and I completely agree with your comment that there are so many naturally beautiful places outside of the major cities.
Hello to both of you. Really enjoy your videos. What is the closest city you are close to on the Silver Coast? We are definitely looking at the Silver Coast to buy a home.
Investment speaking, you guys and your youtube channel has helped me sooo much and I am sure it has changed my life and impacted my future so much!... I am so grateful, and .... I also totally wanna go live in Portugal!!! jajaja Saludos & Greetings from Mexico! Thanks for such an awesome informative channel!
Great info! Now retired and still working on my NHR (with DTA exemption). Hope to find a rental in a rural location in the Silver Coast area... as soon as they allow people from the UK to enter the country again!
@@OurRichJourney I have been living in a small rural village here in the UK for the past 2 years. I moved here from Texas after retiring, now I plan to relocate to Portugal. I am totally unencumbered (financially) and ready to move to a place in Portugal where its sunny, warm, and a slower pace... where I can just relax and enjoy my retirement!
@@OurRichJourney Looking forward to it... so, please let me know if you guys hear of anything that fits this general description: 2-3 beds. 2-3 baths, at least ½ acre in a rural setting. Thanks...!!!
Wonderful indepth inspiration for anyone of any age dreaming of this positive move. l love the way you two are so compatible + respect one another. In your presentations you appear as true soulmates 💞 and your girls are a credit to their loving upbringing. Christina has the 😊 sweetest smile - you all do, giving us all hope we can be contented if we plan right. 🏆
Greetings from the sunny (!) Pacific NW. Enjoyed the video and your perspectives. I’m a city girl who loves to work in my garden. Hm, maybe a mid-sized city? Looking forward to “FIRE’d” problems. Best wishes to you and your family to stay happy and healthy!
my main concern in the reliability of electricity and most important internet speed. i do my work online so i need a really good internet connection. also, what is the weather like during the year? any help would be appreciated
I'm both so jealous of and inspired by you two. I love watching your videos because you guys give such great advice and you look like you're having fun.
Hi from San Diego! This video is a wonderful escape from what feels like constant turmoil here; violence, politics and fear dominate the news. How do you manage what goes on here with the little peace of heaven you’ve made for yourselves in Portugal?
That's a good question Jonnie! When we lived in the states, everything in the news seemed negative and salacious. So we pretty much stay away from the tv news. But, we listen to NPR for the major updates! :)
Another informative video! I’m planning my first exploratory trip in October...if it’s allowed. Still leaning towards a major city, as I do not want to own a car. But the countryside is very beautiful! Thanks for sharing! 🙋🏻♀️
Bravo!!! I have been so inspired by your family. I have become a frugal minimalist and saving more than ever. Currently I am in the dry Midwest but I had been thinking about moving back to expensive Seattle because I miss the ocean, fresh seafood and I honestly felt healthier there. But if I'm realistic I really should find something comparable to your countryside move. This will require some thinking as I'm not planning to leave the US. But I long to be near the ocean. Your countryside home with so much space and land is fabulous! And like you said excitement and cuisine is just a drive away. God's continued blessings. 🌹
You guys should do a vídeo about basic portuguese to have a simple conversation. 😁 I am from the contryside, in central Portugal, and love to be a turist in Lisbon and Porto, but couldnt adapt living in Lisbon.
Great topic. We invested just outside of Lisbon. The country side is not without interest. Sure that it is the best way to learn Portuguese faster. I guess those differences are similar to the one we can find in major European cities. Great topic and great video.
what your describing is the same in Ireland , small rural towns vs the bigger cities like Dublin etc. There’s pro’s & con’s but much easier to live in a city for a foreigner I guess.
Finally got around to watching this video. Very informative. Pretty much what I expected - would be curious to know how quickly and the quality of the highway/street system you can get to schools and activities. But I totally get you also have to keep your location private. Mostly trying to see if it lines up with my independent research. :) BUT, seems like hitting up Lisbon on a regular basis is super easy and you can get sushi and whatnot when you have a hankering for it! Thanks as always for sharing!
Great point! The driving is definitely more in the more rural areas! But, you could get the best of both worlds by living just outside a major city - perhaps close to a train station! Less driving! :)
Great video, as always! My only issue is that I don't drive so living deep in the country would be an issue. Can you guys recommend any small towns/cities in Portugal that are walkable and won't require the car to live?
Thank you for this great info..could you guys do a video on how you have integrated the last two years? Or do you have one out and i missed it? Ex..The learning of things, beginning all over again in a different country, how much stress it might be, paying bills...
I love, love, love your life in Portugal! You are living the best of both worlds residing on the coast yet still close enough to the city. Would you say the weather on the coast is similar to that in the Bay Area? Foggy mornings with sunshine by noontime? Like others who commented here, can you tell us how you handled taxes as expats? In a previous video you mentioned you paid taxes in Portugal which confused me cause I thought you're taking advantage of NHR.
Yes - that's a good question! It's harder now with covid and not being able to travel. But, we lived abroad in Japan and Spain and had lots of time for family and friends to visit (and vice versa)! :)
I would love to live in the countryside or mid-size town but I wonder how that works with sending your children to international schools? Do they go to a local school now or do you live close enough to an international school?
There are lots of private schools throughout Portugal. Our girls go to a private school. One thing you could do is start to research potential private schools and then look for housing near those school. One tip, though: make sure there's space for your children at the schools first! :)
@@OurRichJourney Thank you, I've started doing that. Your last tip is golden, I didn't think of that! Thank you, I've been binge watching your expat and FIRE videos with my husband!
I love the countryside but for 15 days, I cant live further than 40km from Lisbon so Setubal would be the maximum but then again you can go north, south you are always 2 hours away from Lisbon

welcome to Portugal! even in countryside, try to made de Nacional route EN 222, stop in every small villages, eat the tipical portuguese food and wines on each place, and enjoy the views...i think you will love! congrats for another great video!
Thanks for the travel advice Paulo!!! We can't wait to make our Portugal road trip!!!
Your HOW TO MOVE TO PORTUGAL course is ErThang!!!/All inclusive/highly detailed...🔥👏🏽❤️👌🏾😊👍🏽 in every category I had questions about)
Last week I watched a Expat Lisbon content creator sharing the mistakes they made (and now may have to leave).
:) Hmmm . . . :)
Aloha Amon and Christina,
Love your videos and looking forward to moving to Portugal and using your program when we retire. Won’t be a while, but we’re grateful for your insights and support
Aloha Adrian!!! So glad you're enjoying our videos! Thank you so much!!!
Checking in from the DMV
Hey there LaShawn! We're always so happy to see you checking in! Thank you!!!
Thanks for such a great vibe and video! Always a plesure to watch
Thanks so much Elodie!
Your new home looks amazing. Nice work!
Thanks so much Steven!
Thanks guys very informative. I definitely gonna check out your other video's as well. I hope to retire in Portugal also in the next year.
Your videos are always a treat!
Aww, thank you so much!!!
Your new home is gorgeous. I would prefer that countryside environment any day
Nice update. Glad you are enjoying life in Portugal.
Thank you Carlos! 😃
Regarding the food part, I think you would do great living in the north, maybe in the Vale do Sousa area, Esposende and maybe Matosinhos. Really calm and near great food.
Thanks for the suggestion!!!
Amon and Christina, thank you for your great content! 🙏🏽 You are my inspiration for what is possible for my family’s future on the to path to reach financial independence.
Wow! That is so kind of you to say Max!!! We're so happy to hear you're feeling inspired on your FIRE journey!!!
Portugal it's so beautiful, every single corner, north to south, east to west including the paradise Islands, Açores and Madeira
Yes Jason! Lots of places to explore!!! Idealista is a great starting point for properties, too!
@@OurRichJourney thanks. Are there better online options for more seasoned investors for light fixer uppers?
Thanks so much for this video! We’d probably look to move to the suburbs of a major city and get some of the benefits of both worlds.
Yes Zato! I love that "best of both worlds" approach!!! :)
I’m from Oakland California
You guys inspire me
Very helpful video. I appreciate the moving to Portugal course you are doing!
Thank you so much Nikki!!!
I love your videos and as a family. My family currently leaves in Lisbon and I hope I will one day meet you guys .🍷
Thank you Edward! It's a small world (and so is Portugal)! I wouldn't be surprised if we run into each other! :)
Great video, the home looks beautiful 😲
Thank you! 😊
Hello to both of you. Really enjoy your videos. What is the closest city you are close to on the Silver Coast? We are definitely looking at the Silver Coast to buy a home.
Another great video- thanks, guys! Btw, I love your glasses, Amon
Thank you Arthur!!!
Thanks for the well balanced advices !! Of course I'll join the journey!! 👊🏿 🔥🔥
That is so awesome!!! Thank you Jean!!!
Very informative and helpful as always!
Thanks Sam! Glad it was helpful!
Thanx for another great video!! You guys are soo inspiring! Makes me really proud to be Portuguese! ;P
Thank you! 😃
That's awesome Stan! We are loving the rural areas! I feel like things will begin to slowly open up again, so you should be here in no time! :)
Warm, sunny, slower pace, where you can relax and enjoy your retirement - yes, yes, yes, and YES! :) Portugal is waiting for you!!! :)
Aww, Miss Pee! You are too kind! Thank you for your kind words!
Mid-sized city could be perfect! It would be like best of both worlds! :)
my main concern in the reliability of electricity and most important internet speed.
i do my work online so i need a really good internet connection.
also, what is the weather like during the year?
any help would be appreciated
I'm both so jealous of and inspired by you two. I love watching your videos because you guys give such great advice and you look like you're having fun.
I'm so in love with your videos! They are very inspirational! My family is from Portugal and my dream is to go back 🥰!!!
Thank you so much Mel!!!
Love it! You guys are my favorite Americans.
Wow! That is a huge compliment! Thank you T! :)
Nice video guys!
You guys are such an inspiration. And I love 💘 your beautiful piece of heaven!! 💕💕
Hi from San Diego! This video is a wonderful escape from what feels like constant turmoil here; violence, politics and fear dominate the news. How do you manage what goes on here with the little peace of heaven you’ve made for yourselves in Portugal?
Turn off the news. It’s just drama created by the media. Our country and people are mostly good.
That's a good question Jonnie! When we lived in the states, everything in the news seemed negative and salacious. So we pretty much stay away from the tv news. But, we listen to NPR for the major updates! :)
Thank you for an inspiring video. Could you do another video showing us the costs of living in the countryside like you did when you were in Lisbon?
That's a good video idea! Thanks for the suggestion Andrea!
Another informative video! I’m planning my first exploratory trip in October...if it’s allowed. Still leaning towards a major city, as I do not want to own a car. But the countryside is very beautiful! Thanks for sharing! 🙋🏻♀️
Laura - that's so exciting! I think you'll have so much fun on your exploratory trip! Lisbon and Porto are both great cities for not owning a car!
@@OurRichJourney Those are numbers one and two on my list! 🇵🇹
Hey guys hru doing nice vid by the way need to see more of that country living😊 so relaxing
Thanks so much Roxanne! You can see even more of the countryside on our Instagram! (@RichJourney) :)
You guys should do a vídeo about basic portuguese to have a simple conversation. 😁
I am from the contryside, in central Portugal, and love to be a turist in Lisbon and Porto, but couldnt adapt living in Lisbon.
Thanks for the video idea Isabel!!!
Great topic. We invested just outside of Lisbon. The country side is not without interest. Sure that it is the best way to learn Portuguese faster. I guess those differences are similar to the one we can find in major European cities. Great topic and great video.
Checking in from my side hustle! 🤟
Hehe! That's what we like to hear!!! :)
what your describing is the same in Ireland , small rural towns vs the bigger cities like Dublin etc.
Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching Beth!
Ayye! My favorite UA-cam family! Inspirational video as always.
Aww, you are too sweet!!! Thank you so much!!!
Haha. Soon we hope to move to portugal especially the country side where we can grow our own plants & have our own cattles.
Hi Guys! Thanks, as usual, a great video. The pace of living in the countryside would fit me perfectly. It's the driving I was hoping to avoid.
Great point! The driving is definitely more in the more rural areas! But, you could get the best of both worlds by living just outside a major city - perhaps close to a train station! Less driving! :)
@@OurRichJourney Thanks, that's what I'm researching right now. I like GOING TO a major city, NOT living in it.
Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom!🤩💕💕💕😉
Aww, so glad you're enjoying it! Thank you Madlena!😊
I loved your videos!!
Thank you for sharing this! :)
Aww, thank you so much for watching!!! 😊
Great video!
Thank you Mario!
You guys make me want to live in Portugal.
I’ve been waiting patiently 💙💙💖💖🙏🏻🙏🏻
Awesome! Thank you so much Zuko!
I own a french passeport (living in North America) so for me moving to Portugal is only a matter of if I want to. Will visit to see if it can suit me
Hello, I was just wondering how you deal with living far away from friends and family that you may have grown up with? Great video!
Come to Leiria, a beautiful city between Lisbon and Porto. There is an international school here.
Very well done! .... I love your country home 🥰 best choice ever ! ! 🤓 🚌 bus stop 🤣
Hey there Bonita!!! That bus stop, right?! :) LOL! Have a great week! See you next Sunday!!! :)
Where in nazare did you guys move to I love country sides its amazing. Great job.
Actually, we don't say where we moved to. But thanks for watching! :)
I love the countryside but for 15 days, I cant live further than 40km from Lisbon so Setubal would be the maximum but then again you can go north, south you are always 2 hours away from Lisbon
