For me, one of THE MOST IMPORTANT lessons I learned many years ago that Mr. Hoey mentions is ... Ask the model if she has any ideas. Trust me, and Mr. Hoey, when I say ... OH HELL YES THEY DO!!!!! Models are people too. Photographers tend to forget that in my experience. I usually start by talking with the model while they are in Hair & Make-Up if it is a proper shoot. Gives them a chance to get to know me and I get the chance to learn some about them that can come in handy during the shoot. Most of all ... again ... ask the model if she has any thoughts/ideas cause ... OH YOU BET SHE DOES! And your images are now going to an entirely new/higher level. Just don't forget to thank the model for her help and credit her when you can. As "Lucy Shepard" (the President's Daughter) said in the movie "The American President," ... "Girls Like That!" 😀(Huge Grin)
Fantastic video Gavin as usual but this one is a nice cut above the norm. Brilliant tips and makes it look so easy. What a beautiful model Cara is too she’s awesome. Thanks Gav ❤
Hello to Cara ! My two practice heads have been looking reproachfully at me for many years since I switched to real models. And, I thought you were going to forget the smoke - great that Cara remembered ! Thanks to All.
Cara was amazing and will be back for sure. I had genuinely called a wrap on the shoot until Cara jogged my memory about the smoke and better still, she was happy to keep going!
Whenever I see a new Gavin Hoey video immediately watch it, and of course I was not disappointed. These videos are so informative, full of great information and funny at the same time, I could watch them all day long 😊👍
If doing this is your passion - own it and take control of it. As Gavin mentioned - definitely pre-plan. Also, start with the basics and practice a lot!
I am still working with 6ft tall Helen Headstand. No shoulders though. Will be learning light with her for a while longer. She does have red, blonde, and brunette wigs for different scenes. Not confident for a model that talks yet. Thanks Gavin for years of teaching the craft. I pickup a nugget of great info everytime I watch one of your videos.
He is really by far the best one in terms of teaching and the results from my point of view. Enjoying pretty much his videos every time please keep on continuing like that. ❤
Gavin, there is no one better on the internet making instructional videos than you. I have watched them all, yes even the ones from years ago and I have always learned a new trick. You're the best! Thanks!
You should make one of these 1st photo sessions outside with a speed light for people who are truly beginning. Most people who are starting out dont have those high end lights or a studio
Another inspiring video Gavin and the crew. Having an experienced model early on in the learning process certainly helps a lot. For those not comfortable going alone initially, a workshop can be an option.
I don't mean to nit-pick here because I Love your photography. You really do create amazing images. Most of us do understand the purpose and the point of shooting the complete Black frame. To make sure that there is no other ambient light coming into the frame @ 1/125, f4.0, 100 ISO setting. Having total control over the studio lighting. By the time you take the next shot though, you changed the ISO from ISO-100 to ISO-200 @1/125, 4.0 without giving a reason. The whole point of the test-shooting at the first setting was to find out if the camera was detecting any other ambient light at ISO-100. Am I wrong here? Please don't misunderstand, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the image. I'm just trying to understand why this was overlooked or if it was just a missed point or edit without comment.
Models..... now there's a can of worms if you are just starting out. You may get lucky but some won't work with you unless you have an 'worthy' reputation. Others will say yes and ghost you. Don't panic. It's not you, it's just the way it is. There are those who will work with beginners ( like myself). Be patient, go to club meets, go to arranged shoots and get some portfolio pics together. I struggled at first, but learning how it works now booking professional models to pose for me. 😊
Glad you have it sorted. For everyone else, offering a fair price to your model and being open about the photos you have planned is the first step in booking your first modelling session.
Haven't watched one of your videos in a month or two as I've been busy with other stuff lately. So apologies if you mentioned this in one of those videos I missed, but one of the first things I caught in this video is that you're shooting at ISO 100 instead of 200. What's driven that change? And yes, another great video!
Good to see you back and that's ab amazing spot! The answer is f/4.0 for a slightly shallower DOF, so I dropped the ISO to balance my flash powers back to where I'm comfy.
Gavin...Thanks! Again, you delivered the knowledge from an easy to understand perspective while using equipment that is affordable for all. Only one question...when are you, and Sam, coming across the pond again to the US?
Great question. Lens focal length and apparent angle of view is directly connected to the sensor size. So when you say 50mm or 80mm you're referring to a "full frame" (35mm format) sensor. I'm using a micro 4/3 sensor which is half the length and half the hight, so my equivalent focal length is half the mm. In otherwords my 25mm lens sees the same image as a 50mm lens on a full frame camera.
Where is the video on tethering? I'm interested in learning about the different equipment involved with portraits and taking video. I've never set up a secondary screen for portraits and I've never set up a secondary screen for video. Is it the same concept?
That's my Lenovo Miix 2 in 1 tablet / laptop. Sadly no genuinely universal tethering software but things like Lightroom Classic, Capture One and Smart Shooter will work with Canon, Nikon and may be one or two other brands.
@@GavinHoey thanks for the reply and info. Canon is my thing; I'm using EOS 1Ds MIII and while EOS Utility does seem to work on my notebook it won't on any of my Android pads... Thanks again!
Good question. Although the light is bright it's also very big. Small light sources are "blinding" large lighting is a lot more comfortable for the model to work in. Top tip... Before you ask a model to "look into the light" test it out yourself 🤩
Will probably never photograph models, not that interested in their poses as mostly want to do pictures of real people all ages males as well as females, who are camera shy and want something to send grandma for Xmas, some thing to use for their LinkedIn profile or business, pic for Fb or IG. Want a plain background not a grid which can easily be changed in post to blue or green or something other than black or white. Can we please have a video to cover that?
now to find a model, who isnt going to charge me an arm and a leg, and doesnt mind shooting on the street someplace because im an old guy and i dont want to creep anyone out, asking them to shoot in my living room (a bit bigger with higher ceilings, than Gavin has)
Gotta say out of all the hosts here Gavin is my favourite
no contest
i dont subscribe to adorama because they have a bunch of photogs, whose work i DONT want to see. i wish i could subscribe to Gavin only
I agree❤
Which is your least favorite? ;)

I can't ask for more then that 😊

Amazing! Literally the video I needed, finally getting more confident and thinking of working with a model and here come Gavin with a banger!
I've got your back Biggie 😉

Doing the hard things is all part of the job 🤣
Love the keep talking tip. It reminded me of the Austin powers photo shoot “You’re a llama!”
"You're a tiger, you're Tony the Tiger!" ...What a legend!
Always a pleasure to look at your videos! Thank you so very much for the share of your precious knowledge and your enthousiasm!

Thank you Gavin and Cara. I alway like the way you run these sessions in a relaxed and informal way yet still very informative. 🐯
Thanks for the kind words Colin 👍

Wow! What a valuable video!! I did my first family photo of friends, and believe you me, the Anxiety is REAL lol!! Thanks so much Gavin :)
Thanks Lisa. It's been a while since I did this for real but I still remember how scared I was right up until the moment the session had finished!
Really good advice, brilliant thank you .
Thanks Paul 👍
Great stuff Gav... As always.
Hello Del and thank you 👍
Never seen Clara before but she's a wonderful model. For a moment, I thought you would say the Amazing Model CHHHHHHLOE!!! 🤭
You'll see Cara again before to long and yes, she was wonderful to work with.
Gavin...Thanks! Again, you delivered the knowledge from an easy to understand perspective while using equipment that is affordable for all. Only one question...when are you, and Sam, coming across the pond again to the US?
I'd jump on a plain tomorrow Robert but sadly no firm plans at the moment.
Ur Model es beautiful!!!
My first professional model was a chihuahua. I've been happy to shoot landscapes exclusively since.
What kind of gels are those?? Love your work ❤❤❤❤
Thanks for sharing.
You might have mentioned mood boards, hair, make-up, clothing, changing room, rests/breaks in posing, and ... refreshments.
All important of course. I could have also added assistants, studio hire and model release forms but hopefully the generic basics are there.
When is next live Gavin? 😃
How about a link to your “ inspiration “ video. Would like to watch that. Thanks.

Another great video, thanks! What tablet are you using to display the tethered images?
That's my Lenovo Miix 2 in 1 tablet/ Laptop.
I gotta ask - where'd you get all those crazy sunglasses?
hi gavin, i tried the setting..and the eye face detection was not good..till i saw u use nightlv all the time ;)
Hi Gavin, why do you always use a wide lens, never saw you using a 50mm, 85, 100mm or 70-200??

can I get the name and brand of the backdrop you used?
I also think blue gels
Spot on with the blue(s) 👍
What is the tethered device/screen you're using and what software on it? Is there some universal tethering software that'll work with older dslrs too?

Polly will get the last laugh when she features on the cover of Vogue magazine! 😋😁
If you're right, I might be able to retire by selling all of her "early work" to the tabloid press 🤣
Gavin, you dont list what you are using for the preview screen or the software
Hi Paul. I'm tethering to a discontinued Lenovo Miix 2 in 1 tablet / laptop. No links unfortunately as it's very much discontinued.
@GavinHoey Thank you Gavin, it's always useful to know, as there will always be other options that isn't an iPad 😊
Poor Polly - Hope she wasn't too upset at being sidelined.....😀
She hasn't spoken to me since 🤣
@@GavinHoey Aww, O how you suffer.....! i'm sure she'll forgive you in time. 😀
So, while halfway through the session saying something like "Well, not as good as the last model, but not bad" is NOT a good idea?
Depends on the expression you want from your model Craig 🤣
When the model is so close by and looking in the flash, is that blinding her?
Good question. Although the light is bright it's also very big. Small light sources are "blinding" large lighting is a lot more comfortable for the model to work in.

Just got the ad200 is it best to use all same power
Nooooo!!! Use the power that gets the exposure you like. If that happen to be the same power as another light, great but if not... also great 😉
Polly can't retire. Too early.
comrads in light... please make sure that things you give to a model to wear it on her skin is clean and smells good and dont scratch her skin....

As far as I'm aware, Poly doesn't own a phone. I think her lack of thumbs slows her down a bit when it comes for typing 😉
Shame on you. You should have included Poly in those pictures! :)
