Dear Gavin your tutorials / podcasts are one of the best, along with the wealth of knowledge you show that enthusiasm and energy which is essential to captivate the audience. I definitely appreciate your in between lighting placement schematic slides. Kudos to Adorama and yourself.
thank you!..someone finally showed an traditional studio set up❤. not edgy modern fashion one light. glad to see it...I am 30 yr photographer since film and I developed in darkroom. LOVE your videos!
I have learned so much from you over the years!! Thank you Gavin for all these outstanding tutorials. And I would like to give a shout out to your wife Sam. The excellent models and amazing photography wouldn't be possible without her camera work, help with the props, and the styling of the shoots. Thank you guys so much for all that you do!! Cheers
@@GavinHoey thanks for responding Gav. Well for starters I can say that my biggest problem these days is mixing Rgb tube lights, I’m using 4foot Amaran tubes with flash, Godox Ad200 Ad400 ad600. Trying to get the color as well as flash look has been a daunting task. Then adding atmospheric spray. That’s one I would say is advanced. Not shooting at sync speed changing iso etc for desired effect. Thank you again for all you do.
Great video as always! I’d love to see a video like this only with a white background just to see how you get the background lite evenly. Mine always end up dropping off on the edges and need to be fixed in post.
Super video as always. Clear information and great images to show the effect. Preferred the final set up but others may have their own favourite. Thanks !
You are the second person I am going to try to meet when I get back to UK! My fav photographer tutor, who I made a goal of my life to talk and take an interview with :D
Thank you. I'm just one of the people in front of the camera here on Adorama TV made to look (and sound) good my lots of unseen but brilliant people behind it 😉
Yep, I've used post processing to add a vignette many times but when you have a lot of similar photos and a little editing time knowing how to nail it in camera is a skill worth knowing 😉
Hi Gavin ! Thank you for your videos. I follow you since the beginning with your own channel many years ago... You taught me so much ! It's always a great pleasure to learn from you. As a new subject to learn could you please, make videos about how to make good full length portraits in a small studio? Thanks a lot !
Thanks for many great videos Gavin. Been following you for many years. One thing that puzzles me is why your beautiful models always have to take different poses with this empty, sad look. Why does it have to be this way? Sophie and Chloe have some amazing smiles and it's a shame models today don't use this opportunity more often. I guess that's how models are taught to be these days, but it's a shame.
As usual this is a brilliant demonstration, not just how to take the shots but the way you construct the lighting environment. I have a question (or rather, a quandary) - I am ready to buy all new equipment (replacing old gear), but I'm stuck whether I get 2 x AD600 Pro + 1 x AD300 Pro to complete my 3 flash setup. One of the main uses will be outdoor sports team photos. I need the consistency between the 2 main lights (which are essentially fill as I have the team with their back to the sun). However I will also be doing a lot of portrait work, and as you demonstrate here the AD300 Pro is great, and you create wonderful light at just 1/8th. And I over-powered with the 600 Pro, or should I really consider 2 x 400 Pro + 1 x 300 Pro? The difference isn't just light, it's money! Heeeellllllp!
Brilliant as usual Mr Hoey, thank you. Do you have a similar setup for groups? I did an event where I had a mixture of setups from a single person to large groups. The results were ok but I could see they needed a bit more.
Great video as always. Do have a question about when you used the third lighting as background light in the first half of the video. Do you prefer to have the halo around her shoulders - like in the video - or do you try and have it slightly higher up so it's more around the head? Also how was it using the Sony a7 IV?
Good for you Gavin! As for the Sony A7 IV ISO, I have noticed that I can push my camera to ISO 1600 with no appreciable degradation in image quality. So given that, I can use ISO 400 and 800 then? Any thoughts?
ISO is part of the exposure that will affect the results of both the amount of ambient light you capture AND flash so increasing your ISO can have unintended consequences. That said, that might be exactly what you want to do... Photography can be frustratingly short of definitive answers. 😉
It didn’t. In the beginning of the video, he ensured that first photo (without flash) was pitch black. I can’t remember his exact camera settings, f stop was about 8 and ISO was very low to prevent ambient lighting.
Very good question. I could give you several answers but the most straight forward (and honest) is... I know a guy who works for Sony and he loaned me his for a week or so 😉
@@GavinHoey I think YOU can take great photos with any camera (as can anyone with good technical skills and IDEAS)... If we are talking about studio photography, I doubt anyone can tell the difference between two pictures, one taken with a FF and the other one with a mFT camera... 🤔maybe an idea for a future video...😉
Hi, Gavin. Great video, as always. But there is one question that annoys me: Is it really necessary that the model adopts that set of antinatural poses? To me, they look as overplayed as the gestures of the actors and actresses of old day films. And it's not a problem of this particular video. Actually, it's something that I too often see in many videos (not only yours) about lightning or even about models posing.
Gavin: great video as always. I echo a few of the earlier comments .... Sony! Wow! Is this a permanent change and you are no longer affiliated with OM Digital Solutions / Olympus? Also, I believe the base ISO for a Sony A7 IV for photo is ISO 100. Any reason why you chose ISO 200?
Lots to unpack in your comment (and all good questions) No, not a permanent change but an opportunity came up to try Sony for a short period and I took it. Other cameras / brands may follow. ISO 200 means my flashes work half as hard and the batteries last twice as long. I stepped back from being an OM System ambassador late 2023 but still have a good relationship with OM SYSTEM and normal OM cameras will be back in my next video 😉
The fill light was a little more central then side, so yes a reflector might have worked (in my small studio) but the fine tuning control was higher with a light.
My studio is 4.5 meters wide (15 feet) and about 2.3 meters (7.5 feet) high to the joist. The bit you can't see is 5 meters (17 feet) deep BUT I lose a lot of that with video cameras / mixing desk etc.
@@andrealfred5217Actually for once I wasn't using my (discontinued) Lenovo Mix in this video but my Dynabook laptop, sadly also discontinued I suspect.
Great video Gavin quick question Gavin where is your usual camera? Sorry I am little confused Gavin because I noticed on one of the images it said Sony
Hi Kirsty, good spot. My OM camera will return but I'm currently able to try some other brands to see what works best for my portrait photography. One thing that won't change is my style, that's not connected with the name on my camera 😉

Impressive shots! Average ratios between the key, fill and kicker lights, please. Amateurs would love to hear that.
u hv changed to a Sony?
I’m guessing you could have kept your original 3 point lighting set up and just added a reflector to fill the other side?
