Zelah Clarke and Timothy Dalton are the best Jane and Rochester, the first one I watched and I had to read it before the series ended, 1983 (me aged 11).
Happy Victober! Thanks Kate for a lovely book tag, that was so much fun and brought up so many Victorian reading memories for me... I cried like a baby too with Gaskell's North and South, oh, parts of that completely broke my heart. I agree too, the Vanity Fair adaptation to screen was amazing, just amazing! Thanks Kate, that was fun! Happy Victober and Happy Victorian reading!! 😃🎩📚
Such a great video, Kate!! Made me SO excited to get to both The Heir of Redclyffe and The Cloister and the Hearth over this next few months!! Looking forward to the “heave sobbing”!! 😂 In the best possible way!!
I love your thoughts on The Belton Estate. I felt the same way reading The Vicar of Bullhampton, specifically the grace of Mr. Fenwick. Thank you, Kate, for suggesting this wonderful novel to start off Victober🧡🧡🧡🙏 and for this terrific vlog. (Samantha Morton and Ciaran Hinds, just sayin'😉)
I just saw that you tagged me, Kate! Thank you! And yes I will definitely do this tag. It’s funny because I have a similar story to your about Oliver Twist so I’ll have to share that in my video. And thank you so much for being the number one person who has influenced me to pick up more Victorian books. I’m loving this journey I am on. And so good to see you! Hope you are doing ok. ❤
Kate, I love hearing about people’s journeys with Victorian lit and booktube has been the most significant part of my own, especially you and Katie! I had no idea The Heir of Redclyffe was so emotional so am extra specially looking forward to getting to it in December!
This is such a great video, Kate! I didn't know those early stories about your Victorian reading journey. So fun! I loved our mutual goal last year for reading Vic Lit. That was so much fun! I love Dickens on screen too. I have a hankering to re-watch that Nicholas Nickleby too.
This is so fun-you definitely make me want to pick up all of these books, to read and to reread. And to watch! I loved Wives and Daughters-that was my first Gaskell. And as someone else mentioned, the 1983 version of Jane Eyre with Zelah Clark and Timothy Dalton completely swept me away as a young teen.
Thank you! This was wonderful! I'm a newbie to this scene and I want to read everything. I just finished reading Oliver Twist for the first time. I was glad to have lived under a rock previously, because not knowing anything really made me love this story more. I was there. I think if I reread it in a couple months I would feel the same. I loved it so much.
Thank you, Kate! Yes! to the David Copperfield series with Daniel Radcliffe: Maggie Smith IS Betsy Trotwood. Also has one of my favorite Victorian quotes from Aunt Betsy to David: "Never be mean in anything; never be false; never be cruel." Words to live by. Tears me up every time. I just finished The Heir Of Redclyffe, which I enjoyed, especially Charles, although all her characters are so real and rounded. One day soon I'll get to Wives and Daughters. Happy Victober!
I just read "Wives and Daughters" in October , and I agree with your comments. It is lovely and so heartwarming - and totally different to "North and South" (or "Mary Barton"). Hard to believe they are by the same author.
I’m going to be reading the heir of Redclyffe sometime in the next couple of months! Now I can’t wait to read it and cry 😭 😂 Hearing what you said about enjoying Dickens’ movies more than books makes me feel better about how sometimes I think I like the Claire Foy Little Dorrit better than the book…
I loved your story about getting drawn in Great Expectations! I'm so glad you did this tag so I could hear about how you came to love Victorian literature!
I also love listening to music when I read. I picked up and read the beginning of Great Expectations when I was a young teenager and I still haven't gone back even though I've read other Dickens 😂 Have you read The Light Princess by George MacDonald? I haven't read a ton of his works but The Light Princess is much more light than his others
I loved Wives and Daughters too. I’ve taken to listening to what Victorian novels I find in audiobooks, I don’t have the patience anymore to read hundreds of words on paper when someone can read them to me! Thank you for your videos.
Hi Kate… I really enjoyed this video. I do read Victorian literature but I take it slow. I’m so embarrassed to admit this, but I have never read Jane Eyre. I’ve seen the movies and I think I know the story, but this month I am actually picking up the book and reading it slowly and loving it. I have been participating In Victober for several years and I enjoy everyone’s videos, but yours are my favorites. Your intro music and sketches just scream Victober🍂
I hope to read Return Of The Native soon. I'm sure a lot of those novels you read would make wonderful adaptations.Alas we are living in the age of the deplorably transient quick hit.
I loved this Kate! Before you said which character you identify with most/are most like, I was thinking Molly Gibson! So it must be true 😂
Zelah Clarke and Timothy Dalton are the best Jane and Rochester, the first one I watched and I had to read it before the series ended, 1983 (me aged 11).
Totally agree.
I’ve always loved this version!

I haven't cried like that in SO long from a book! I think I'm in need of it tho😅

@@kathleencraine7335 Wow! I had forgotten that Betsy Trotwood quote - words to live by indeed!
So glad you enjoyed The Heir of Redclyffe!
Loved this video 😍😍😍 happy Victober Kate!!
The 2005 Jane Eyre adaptation is so good!

Sigh. 😌 What a lovely chat, Kate. ♥️ Molly 😉😍!!! Do the next thing. Yes!

That switch has just been lit for me this year 🤗
Totally agree with you about how so the film of David copperfield is sooo good. I love wife’s and daughters too 😊

I did know there were good versions of The Moonstone and Nicholas Nickleby to watch! I am putting them on my tbw list!
I loved this!! ❤
