Great video I checked on a Honda motorcycle last year sob story how her husband died she was moving wanted to be paid in gift cards I reported her. Thanks for the video
Best to assume all matching numbers cars are fakes, that's why I hate that term. Find the right block within the right date code and stamp the block and viola, matching numbers! So its really a joke. Unless you know the car or its a well known Bloomington or NCRS car, don't pay extra because good chance its a fake and who knows what it really was.
Lyle...How true this video is 😂.... This is Michael Stitt up in Ky. Have owned Corvette's since I was 20. Me and my buddy Steve who is nieve of this very subject 😢 have been on 4 of these wild goose chases.... only to find the complete opposite of what they told him over the phone.... when we arrived.... Anyone wanting a Corvette needs to go to Carlisle and actually talk to people at the car corral at the back of the fair ground. Over the years I have been snuckered too... tis part of the learning process. Once again Lyle Great info 👍 keep it up 🎉😂 ....
I know what your saying. I did own a1967 Corvette Fastback for 30 years. I'm aware of the actual value, matching numbers are top price. Nice video for other people to know the real deal.
great video....i have been looking for a 63-67 corvette couple and i too have run across these scams.......so to you my friend ......i would even buy a basket case as i am an old body man.....would you have anything or know where i could get one ? thanks....
There is another big one to talk about. I sold a 1972 about 15 years ago with 90k original miles I was the second owner. I miss it but family happened and it was sold. Well last year it was up for sale with 60k original miles, it was mine, I knew the car and they had it for 15 years it all matched up. I even had the window sticker and it matched the numbers, if this guy was honest I would have given him those items I still had. Anyway mileage is a lie and I see cars ads saying 20k 40k 60k original with worn out interiors and etc, etc. That is a big one in the market place that is in my opinion a scam. I don't even look at mileage anymore when I buy and old car, I look at condition and if its a good value, anyway thanks for listening, good videos.
I've seen the same in the U.K. especially with Jaguar XKE's on sale for a ridiculously low price. I've always taken the view if it looks too good then its going to be a scam. No one in their right mind is going to sell a car far below its true value.
Lyle love your productions awsome . Iam in eastern Canada , I have a 79 that I squired in very bad condition the window motor covers were off and trying to reinstall them they do not line up , how can I get the covers back on Thanks kindly. Bob
Lyle, I bought a 1998 corvette coupe. This car has 30776 miles on and garage kept. I have looked over this car from A-Z and can't find anything wrong. It is red and doesn't have a scratch on it anywhere. I even had it lifted up and it looked like it has never been driven. This vette is completely stock. Could you give me a close estimate on what it's worth in that shape. I watch you all the time and enjoy what you have to say. Surely would appreciate your feedback.
Thanks for the information but can you send me a link to one of these scam adds. I have been in the market for a 1956 Ford Mustang Coupe and have never seen any thing close to what you are talking about. The scams I have run across are frame work butchery and non matching serial numbers.
Most of this comes down to internet safety when purchasing anything. Since Corvette buyers tend to be "older" and might not be internet savvy. Thanks for the tips.
Great Detective work Lyle! In my 30 plus law enforcement career, and assigned as an Auto Theft Detective, I concur with your investigative talents. Of course we would go further with VIN verifications and so on, but you really covered the most important and easy to investigate on your own. Good job Detective!!
The scams are everywhere, my wife makes items in our house and sales them online. One day we found one of her items listed on another site. They had literally just taken a jpeg of one of her items and listed it for sale one their site
Awsome advice as always! Bought my first Vett (c4) a year ago and went off all the advice from your videos. Beautiful car and I love it thank you for the videos they do help people.
Classic - Classic - Classic Speaking of Scams. No Corvette is a Classic It has always been my understanding that the term "Classic" is Owned by The Classic Car Club of America. Now days Classic is thrown around as if it is just another word for OLD CAR. It means nothing. I hope you enjoy some "California Champagne" while you sit in your "Corvette Classic" - show some respect
Thx so much for that extremely important info. It's nice to know that there are folks like yourself with integrity & caring about others...Great Video!!
Thx. And, yup, if it's too good to be true it is - I'm looking right now for a C4 - when speaking to 'them' I indicate I will fly in on the next flight to do business - it's amazing how many of them just hang up or try the 'we'll ship it to you' - Don't think so ... Vettes Rule!😉😎
Outstanding video Lyle. I met you in Sarasota in May while in that area. You showed me around your shop and were great to talk too. Thanks for what you do for we Corvette owners. Gary from NC
Not just cars - seeing a lot of parts scams - lots of pictures and tempting prices - bit me once for small amount but still makes me mad to think about - if we all work at shining bright lights on these scam artists- maybe we can make some headway - solid advice as always Lyle
I️ think you are approaching this wrong. You need to share videos on these folks so we can scam them back. I️ LOVE giving it back to these types of people.
As always a fantastic video by Lyle. Filled with good advice, great content and good humor to keep matters light yet serious. As always we thank you for the effort you put in your shop and this UA-cam channel. Keep up the awesome work 👍🏻
Good info for the folks Lyle, I fear these scams will get more and more polished and attractive as A I progresses, it's scary just how good that is getting.
Lyle, I live just south of Sarasota. Good to see a Florida guy on a podcast. I'm happy with my Lexus GS350 F Sport now but a Corvette may be in my future if I can find the right 75 y.o. who can't get in and out of it anymore. LOL
Great vIdeo with excellent warning info. It reminded me of an ad I saw several months ago for a '85 C4 with EFI and triple carbs! I guess they were for backup. With all the horrible weather on the east coast lately, you might want to remind viewers about buying flood-damaged vehicles.
Excellent advice! This is exactly how I vet (pardon the pun) these too-good-to-be-true type websites. And this doesn't just go for automobiles, it goes for websites purporting to sell all manner of collectible items, including firearms, militaria, antiques, coins and stamps, etc.
Great information. Any more today, you have to be part detective to make sure you aren't getting scammed. On the other side of the fence, there are now dealers asking outrageous prices for Corvettes that don't warrant the high price. So much for the days of an honest sale done with a handshake....
You are spot on!! I agree with your point about desirable vehicles..... Corvette, sports cars, Harleys, etc....these scammers must think everyone is completely gullible 😂
Classic car sales target Boomers. These people are old and do fall for these scams because they believe they can hunt out deals. I cannot fathom why anyone would spend money on a car they can't sit in first, and that includes BaT.
Another great video your someone we can trust and I appreciate that you tell us the truth and you only sell us stuff you believe in. I have asked your opinion on a few things the fact that your so willing to help us is amazing and appreciated. Thank you Lyle
You are correct, as the decades have rolled by, scammers have multiplied like rats! Fortunately, as a natural cynic, I was prepared for the Internet's bs
I just noticed something kind of... big, for lack of better words. I'm always blown away people fall for these scams. It's common. I have people send me links and I can tell by the tilte its a scam. And then all the other things random people do I start to think everyone is so dumb it hurts my head. Then you start talking and sound just like me trying to get people to see something that is plain as day to me. Thanks for a small thread of hope that we aren't completely doomed. People are without a doubt getting significantly dumber. And therefore easy targets. This comment isn't youtube politically correct but you know what I mean. If a comment isnt full of fact baseless praise then people see it as hatefull, whole other can of worms. The fact this video exist is enough evidence we're in an intellectual crisis. Not you making it but that it has to be made for obvious scams. The scammers might get smarter then those people are going to lose everything.
Lyle, you are the man... now I am trying to decide between a 65, 66, or preferable 67 Coupe with an L79 4 Speed and I am also considering a c5 Z06. Do you have any advice and do you have any Corvettes that for this criteria?
+Always ask...I woulde like to look it over. Place an time. Then call somebody in the area to check it out. A church. Uber ? for $20.00. I use uber. Done so 4 times.
yeah, especially if someone accidently finds a bullet mustang in a junkyard in mexico and several well known mustang specialist verify its real and then all make hundreds of thousands of dollars when its restored and sold.
The ultra-collectible '63 with only 10K miles. Well, it may be possible I guess. For $44K...? No doubt an NCRS winner as well. Wanna buy a bridge too? Any Vette owner would know this was a scam from the get-go. People that want to buy any classic better know every stinkin' little detail about the car they want to buy (as it came from the factory) before doing so. "A fool and his money..."
I found a deal on a 66 Big Block Corvette for only $44,000! It only has 3,200 original miles! It was purchased new in 1966 and then the original owner got drafted to Vietnam and left it in his mother’s garage. He’s been MIA for 57 years and she has finally given up waiting for him. I don’t have the money for it but that’s ok because if I give her a deposit of $1,000 she’ll hold it for me and I also got an email from a Nigerian Prince who just needs access to my bank account so he can transfer 42 million dollars into it and he’s going to let me keep 20% so I’ll be easily able to pay the rest of the money for the Vette. My future’s so bright I gotta wear shades. 😎
Who is the Corvette guy in Los Angeles? I own a mostly original 1970 C3, L46. Need someone to sort it out. I was using Dick Gilstrand, but he is no longer with us.
i swear i will never understand these outrageous prices for any old car pre 84 as a old school car guy born in 65 who has owned every thing from k5 4x4 to muscle cars growing up a car guy could buy one ( good running ) for around 2000k to 4500k now the same cars nearly 40 years later cost 40k to 300k even a piece of crap 1984 4 door ford ltd no one wanted back in the day will cost 8500 a rusted out chassis will cost 8k why ? and a bank with good interest rates will not even think about a loan for one so the average gear head is out of luck why ? so mister money bags think they look cool SITTING IN THEIR COLLECTION and then there is people with classics just sitting outside or in a old building not touched in 30 years it makes me sick
I have no interest in owning a Corvette but, the information in this video can be used for just about anything for sale online. Take the Husky 600+ piece tool set that keeps popping up in my email for $69.99. Gee, I wonder if that's legit lol! By the way, it's not that I don't like Corvettes, they're beautiful cars. The problem is that while I can easily get in one, my arthritic left knee usually prevents me from getting back out!
I was "offered" a pickup for cheap. I was going to have to pay them, then go to the warehouse and pay the storage, Then I can "Drive it away" The warehouse is ALWAYS in a different city. The usual reason is the car was owned by ( insert title of close relative to the seller, and it hurts to much to look at it). Yep, sounds totally legit to me, how about you!!
Another red flag is the photos on the dealership website. Legitimate classic car dealerships take comprehensive photos of their inventory, and they do it in the same place for every car. If the background in the photos is different for each car, it's probably not real; the photos were just copied from a Google search. In fact, if you do a Google image search using the "dealer's" photo, you'll likely find the exact same photo somewhere else.
I've driven nearly a hundred Corvettes at Mecum over the years. Some are very nice from private collections. Others are Pigs with Lipstick. You have to do your homework. New shiny paint does not guarantee the condition of the car. There's sooo much junk cars out there. Let the buyer beware!
The people who would spend the money on a 1963 split window Corvette for a 40 or 50,000 in good condition or stupid enough and and they deserve to get scammed if they believe that obviously they're not a Corvette owner in their teens like I am and I'm way past my teens it's called no common sense in don't know what they're buying
When there is no documentation! I have ran across so many muscle car sellers that will say "its numbers matching, and just had the engine and transmission rebuilt." Then you say "Thats great, do you have any documentation?" And 99% of the time they say "NO."
This is the first video I've watched on your channel - it popped up in my feed, and why not - I'm a car guy! This is great information & advice for those who may be a little less informed, or perhaps too excited about a potential purchase without considering the pitfalls. The delivery in this video was perfect, as well as being short & sweet. I will confirm, everything is a scam these days. I find myself always watching my own back, as well as others around me. The world has changed - you truly have to practice "zero trust" (a concept often used in the computer world) and go from there.
The same goes for some of these online auction sites. I was bidding on a C6 Z06 but then the bids from some of these other bidders just didn't look real to me. After some digging, I discovered or deduced that this may be a fake auction. And it seemed as though a lot of these same bidders were bidding on multiple cars, probably just to run up the bid. In other words they were part of the scam. If you look at some of their profiles, they look a little scammy. I ran away and never went back. There are too many legit ways to find your dream car without risking thousands of dollars on a possible too good to be true deal on the internet...just saying.
If you’re willing to send a deposit to a “dealer” without seeing the car in person or talking with someone specifically about the car and having a PDI on the car by an independent third party….you shouldn’t be allowed on the internet.
Hi my name is bob I bought a 78 25th white with red base Corvette to get to the point it was ree paint, int, redone runs good so far I love it but feel guilty at the same, I paid way to mutch 16,500 out the door tax title licence tell me what you think
Have seen many ads like this on Craigslist and not just for Corvettes. It's pretty obvious theses are scams and if you fall for them you seriously need to seek help.
I'm glad you give us corvette owners valuable advice I'm from Northern Michigan Corvettes are far and few to be found I've learned a lot of valuable information from you keep up the great work
When I am buying online I always ask the seller to send me a photo of the item with any kind of bottle he has in his house. If he does not own it, he will never send a photo.
This just happened to a guy with a 428cj Mustang. Don't know how much he lost but they got him. Same deal. Legit looking site, one car waaaay cheaper than it was worth.
Great video I checked on a Honda motorcycle last year sob story how her husband died she was moving wanted to be paid in gift cards I reported her. Thanks for the video
Yep...the Gift card request 100% guarantees a scam. Glad you reported them! Lyle
Sometime in the future, please do one on VIN tags, engine casting numbers, and fake Numbers Matching cars !!!
As a corporate security director, I applaud your advice on this. With one exception. I wouldn't recommend clicking on any links. Just to be safe ...
Seriously! I gotta bring my C7 down and visit you. You've given me so much useful info. I feel like i owe you a visit. 😊
I think one of the biggest Corvette scams today is the absurd dealer markups on the C8 Z06 and ERay plus Chevrolet letting them get away with it.
Lyle, when I watch videos like this. I wish I lived in or near Sarasota.
I’d be at your shop getting my now Classic Vette fixed. 😂
Lyle...How true this video is 😂.... This is Michael Stitt up in Ky. Have owned Corvette's since I was 20. Yep I know a fella who thought he bought a Viper paid for it in full and no car ever existed at the dealer and it was large MFR dealership.
You are an AWESOME Guy Lyle and do us all a Great service!
Honestly and excellent video ..Congratulations..!!
And its not just corvettes. I came close to getting burned on a classic pick up truck.
I know what your saying. I did own a1967 Corvette Fastback for 30 years. I'm aware of the actual value, matching numbers are top price. Nice video for other people to know the real deal.
great video....i have been looking for a 63-67 corvette couple and i too have run across these scams.......so to you my friend ......i would even buy a basket case as i am an old body man.....would you have anything or know where i could get one ? thanks....
Knocked it out of the park!!!!!

Thanks kindly. Bob
send me pics of what you are looking at to 941-356-3280. Lyle
Good INFO...THX!
James, I would put that car at roughly $17-$18K retail. $15,500 wholesale. Lyle
Still waiting for my '67 427 to get here from Nigeria. Only cost me 30 ounces of gold.
Ha HA
Thanks for the information but can you send me a link to one of these scam adds. I have been in the market for a 1956 Ford Mustang Coupe and have never seen any thing close to what you are talking about. The scams I have run across are frame work butchery and non matching serial numbers.
Check it out. Then follow the checklist in the video. wesmithautosales.com/listing/1966-chevrolet-corvette/
Most of this comes down to internet safety when purchasing anything. Since Corvette buyers tend to be "older" and might not be internet savvy. Thanks for the tips.
The old addage, if it's too good to be true....
Corvette Buddy Lyle?
Broken ODO 😂
Lyle, you are the man for helping these buyers out. Cudos.
Ditto!
Be very cautious, if someone tries to sell you, their 1983 Corvette.
I'll offer to straight trade for my vintage 1952 Corvette.
Lol
I just bought a 1983 4 door 4 wheel drive.....what?
As always, you bring us Corvette owners very valuable and important information 👍
I appreciate that!
Great Detective work Lyle! In my 30 plus law enforcement career, and assigned as an Auto Theft Detective, I concur with your investigative talents. Of course we would go further with VIN verifications and so on, but you really covered the most important and easy to investigate on your own. Good job Detective!!
Then you don't know your a scammer. British sellout
So that 2023 C8 with 200 miles on it driven by a Lil ol lady from Pasadena .....is not real !!???
The scams are everywhere, my wife makes items in our house and sales them online. One day we found one of her items listed on another site. They had literally just taken a jpeg of one of her items and listed it for sale one their site
Great information. Thank you! There is no shortage of Internet scams, nor a shortage of people who fall for them.
So true!
Awsome advice as always! Bought my first Vett (c4) a year ago and went off all the advice from your videos. Beautiful car and I love it thank you for the videos they do help people.

I only buy cars that I can see in person its a bad idea to buy ANY car sight unseen
Or at least have a knowledgeable third party inspect it...that $300 could save you $30000 or more... Lyle
Thx so much for that extremely important info. It's nice to know that there are folks like yourself with integrity & caring about others...Great Video!!

Great job Lyle! Your videos are always helpful and great!
Outstanding video Lyle. I met you in Sarasota in May while in that area. You showed me around your shop and were great to talk too. Thanks for what you do for we Corvette owners. Gary from NC

Best way to avoid the scam, never buy one of these jokes.
Good info for the folks Lyle, I fear these scams will get more and more polished and attractive as A I progresses, it's scary just how good that is getting.
It is more worrisome to me how easily people are parted from their money despite numerous red flags waving in their faces. Lyle

We are gullible. Look at our government 🤨
Don't EVER buy a classic car without seeing it in person
You can't fix stupid 😅
Another great video your someone we can trust and I appreciate that you tell us the truth and you only sell us stuff you believe in. I have asked your opinion on a few things the fact that your so willing to help us is amazing and appreciated. Thank you Lyle

Yes, sometimes you just want something too much and stop thinking.
You can’t trust anyone. You got to go see the car and make the purchase in person.
great video thanks

Thank you for your kind words, and thank you for watching! Lyle :)
You get it. So smart using UA-cam. Congratulations. Keep thise videoes coming
I've never been able to trust people that wear goatees. It's simply never worked out.
Your car in the background is a close duplicate of mine in appearance anyway.
Do a Google image search, you'll find the real car at the real dealership. Won't be half price, but if you love it...
If you’re willing to send a deposit to a “dealer” without seeing the car in person or talking with someone specifically about the car and having a PDI on the car by an independent third party….you shouldn’t be allowed on the internet.
Just bought 2022 LT2 coupe on Ebay for $49k. Ships from China
I once saw a 1969 L-88 selling in Australia for $ 20K! the owner said that the owner had died in Vietnam and his mom was trying to get rid of it!!
Every time that I get in contact with a scammer I usually play along with them for a couple of weeks just to fck with them.
Hi my name is bob I bought a 78 25th white with red base Corvette to get to the point it was ree paint, int, redone runs good so far I love it but feel guilty at the same, I paid way to mutch 16,500 out the door tax title licence tell me what you think
Why does that red hardtop in the background have a radio antenna leaning backwards. They were installed straight up at the factory.?
If it sounds to good to be true????? It probably is 👍👍

Have seen many ads like this on Craigslist and not just for Corvettes. It's pretty obvious theses are scams and if you fall for them you seriously need to seek help.
I'm glad you give us corvette owners valuable advice I'm from Northern Michigan Corvettes are far and few to be found I've learned a lot of valuable information from you keep up the great work
Scam. You sell vette to shady guy. You buy vette from shady guy. Got it.
Is the Corvette super special classic corvette on a Buy here Pay here lot. Can you pick the car up before you pay anything for it
Thanks Lyle, this is a good video for any classic car shopper.
When I am buying online I always ask the seller to send me a photo of the item with any kind of bottle he has in his house. If he does not own it, he will never send a photo.
Iam in the middle of an 82 vette refresh nobody on restoration and finding original g m replacement parts is getting out of hand
This just happened to a guy with a 428cj Mustang. Don't know how much he lost but they got him. Same deal. Legit looking site, one car waaaay cheaper than it was worth.
