Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia in the world. Nearly 50 million people worldwide have it. But after decades of research, finding a way to prevent this disease has been a puzzle that has eluded the medical community.
And now we might be closer than ever.
Seeker sat down with the Mayo Clinic's Nilufer Ertekin-Taner, a neurologist and neuroscientist focused on Alzheimer's disease and related dementias, to discuss the disease.
Alzheimer's disease is a progressive condition, typically starting in the part of the brain associated with memory. It then spreads, causing trouble with memory, other cognitive abilities, and eventually, loss of bodily functions. Alzheimer's is a relentlessly progressive condition that leads to death by or with the disease.
Age, smoking, hypertension, diabetes, and obesity are all risk factors for Alzheimer's.

I really do hope this disease is solved soon, one of the most scariest diseases to be diagnosed with
FigureAssist yeah it’s crazy for sure. I know it’s how the body breaks down for some people with age, but hopefully we can all be old and sharp minded.
Awful way to go, hurts the families just as much as the patient.
I have a grandmother with Alzheimers it’s sad watching her forget the family that’s closest to her. At this time I don’t even think she remembers me, but she has remembered my existence before
It’s literally one of the easiest diseases to prevent. It’s just that people wait until it’s too late to care about it. There’s an endless amount of things and activities that can prevent neurodegeneration but people only give a shit about it once they have it and then at that point they want a “cure“ or treatment which is complete nonsense because your brain was never supposed to get to that point anyway. Senility is actually not normal.
@@Ryan88881 alzheimer's starts much earlier than people imagine, even with no physical symptoms you could already have it, thats why preventive measures are so hard, and we dont truly know what causes it, its one of those illness that humanity knows a lot of but cant really pinpoint the cause.
So no, i dont think its easily preventable.
They don't mention this in the video, but chronically high levels of cortisol are one cause of the snowballing cycle of neuron cell-death that characterizes Alzheimer's. I know we can't always avoid stressful situations, but we can change how we react to them, develop coping tools, make changes to avoid those situations, and learn to stop positively reinforcing stress. Learning to stop the cycle of ruminating and negative self-talk is a good place to start for anyone with anxiety or depression.
Thanks for the advice 💖 I’ll try my best to apply it in to my life

Took my dad and my grandmother and is taking my mother as I type. Wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.
Spend time with your family, everyone. You never know when or who it will strike.. and it progresses FAST.

I lost my grandma from Alzheimer's on Jan 28 2017. My disabled mom (muscular dystrophy sharko-marie-tooth) and I (I'm her home care worker) both moved in with my grandma to take care of her. She made me promise to keep her home as she did not want to go to a facility, a promise I kept with blood sweat and alot of tears. I'm so sorry what you have been through and what you are currently going thru with your mother. As soon as my mom gets home I'm going to give her a big hug because of your comment. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your mother. I wouldn't wish this disease from hell on anyone! Not even that jackass troll who wrote you that incensitive bullshit comment. 🙏✝️🙏
@@jason420jv1 He could've phrased that differently, but hes right. If his close relatives were lost to this disease, theres a high chance of him having it in the future as well. He should consult a doctor about it.
I just lost my Father last week at the age of 79, he had Dementia and Alzheimer’s for the last 7+ years of his life. In the end malnutrition and on top of that pneumonia took him.
RIP 😟
I'm sorry for your loss, don't give up. You're not alone. My grandfather had ahlzeimer and I still miss him often.
Genetically you are also inclined to suffer this disease in future.
Hugs to you. I can’t imagine what you and your family had to go. 🙁
I truly appreciate everyone’s kind words and thoughts, thank you 💕
RIP mum, died 2019/10/4 from Alzheimers. worst thing to see someone go through. 2 years ago she was on the bad end of memory loss, Jan this year she didn't remember me, 3 weeks ago she was non responsive and died with family by her side. Hope there's improvement in this field. They say people last 3-5 years, she barely made 2 years.
how old was she ? did you check for markers ?

Is a cymbal ride really the appropriate music for a video about this? uhhhh
The video was very informative and great, but the music was a bit of a disaster.
My father has Alzheimer's and it's unfortunate that there isn't a cure yet
Look into Cannabis, no joke, we have enough medical studies by now which proof the effectiveness of really small doses of THC!
My uncle has it,he fails to recognize any of the family members.
This video gives good advice: Keep moving. Keep using your brain. If you don't use it, you lose it.
Play Gwent everyday for the test of your life. That game is so complex yet so fun, I would say its better than chess
This was one of the first topics I ever made a video on. It's always really interesting to me to see how other creators approach the same material but in really different ways. Makes it so you can watch a video on things you already know, but it stays really interesting!
I don't scare easily, but the loss of self that comes with dementia is easily the thing that scares me the most. I lost an aunt to it, an uncle on the other side of the family is starting to show early signs, even on a good day, my memory isn't the best, but I am what little I have. To lose even that terrifies me. I stare into my own oblivion every day, and I run screaming from it to go fetal in a corner.
It’s a glitch in matrix, which doesn’t connect that the body is still alive and not ready for reincarnation……..
I pray this doesn’t happen to me nor anyone else
You already typed this comment yesterday
Snake Pliskin don’t pray, study to help the research
Praying won't have any effect, you're just talking to yourself.
@Snake "...doesn’t happen to me nor [or] anyone else." There are only two ways to use "nor": 1) It's neither here nor there, and 2) Nor would he agree to the deal.
Alzheimer's destroys connections in the brain involved in memory. It affects the cerebral cortex responsible for language, reasoning, and social behavior. It's important to have a caretaker that understands this and is empathetic, and tolerant to the behavior. She's is correct the person must be educated in this.
Great video, but what the heck is up with the music? It's *sooo* unfitting ...
Why is the music so loud and distracting?
This is a terrible disease. I lost my grandmother and my mother in law because of Alsheimers. Now I do volunteer work in an home for people with dementia. It is sometimes heartbreaking to see them wither away... but it is also very satisfying to be able to give those people some love and care other than the usual medical care. They are not all that old. There is also young dementia. We have people who are just 40 or 50 years old. Most of the people can still do nice things like taking a walk in the sun or sing along with music or even play with cards. I make often a cake or cookies for them. Food is something that makes everyone happy, even the ones who are in the final stage of the disease. I know that most of them don’t recognise me the next day but that doesn’t matter. For them it’s the moment that counts ... I hope that more people will finally see that the longer we live, the more chance we have on contacting dementia and that those people are our aunts, sisters, uncles, fathers and mothers. We should not be afraid of them because they remind us of our own mortality.
Such a mismatch.
Amazing video, equally unfitting bg music.
Dr Taner has an MD and a Ph.D. You misrepresented her qualifications introducing her name.... it is a huge difference
sue
too short; also vague and of course now I can't remember what it was about
lol
it's just a burning memory
There is a sleep doctor Joe Rogan has on his podcast. There is a direct link of Alzheimer’s disease to lose of sleep. People who get less than 4 hours of sleep have 80% chance of getting it. Make sure you get enough sleep as well as staying active. Hope this helps. You can look up that podcast yourself if you don’t believe me.
Winds_Of _Night idk about that. I’m going with the doctor no offense.
Some of the videos where you don't need Subtitles... You can hear everything clearly...
I think he was being sarcastic, since the audio is very low.
"Everywhere at the end of time" , the caretaker
So Tau are formed inside the neuronal cells and Beta-Amyloid plaques between the neuronal cells Both are Toxic Proteins which finally leads to dysfunction and death of neuronal cells
Thank you for this Beautiful Explaination✌ (LOVE FROM KASHMIR)
You should definitely make a video on encephalitis amd most importantly Japanese Encephalitis. It has been a sure case of death if someone gets in the far East countries like un India, Myanmar, and other southeast Asian countries.
Great video but the Background music is really distracting
How many Alzheimer’s patients does it take in to screw in a lightbulb?
To get to the other side.

I dun get it. Is it the non sequiter?
@@llamaliammm Why did the chicken crossed the street?

Please make a video on 'How close are we to cure Alzheimer's'.
It is NOT a disease that you cure it is a disease that you prevent.
Far away, the only way to "prevent" it at this point is having Autism but that comes with its own negatives so...
@@Ryan88881 you can cure it with marijuana
@@theoneand0nly874 Only in the early stages though. THC mainly acts as an effective method of dementia prevention rather than treatment. Even when it reverses early stage dementia it wont actively treat the superficial symptoms themselves it will just make the symptoms less frequent or non-existent in the long term. So in the meantime you'll still be experiencing the woes of senility. People should just prevent this altogether by making THC a part of the human diet.
PLEASE DO NOT OVERLAY LOUD BACKGROUND MUSIC WHILST SOMEONE IS TALKING!! It makes it hard to concentrate and even hear the words they are saying at times. This is so basic that I can't believe Seeker are screwing this up. Not to mention that the music is inappropriate for the topic of Alzheimers.

Blood pressure measurements as a biomarker for high blood pressure? What? It's like saying that a bruise is a biomarker for a contusion.. I'm pretty sure there must be better examples.
Also "we may be closer than ever to solving it" and then the solution is remain active and do not be obese? Well we probably knew this 50 years ago, I don't see anything new in this video.
"how much we don't know about this"
maybe im just the only one hearing crazy jazzdrums in the background music?
Poor diet is Major contributer
If that was the case everyone with poor diet would get it

I wonder if these treatments can help prevent Alzheimer’s disease for people with Down syndrome who are predisposed to getting Alzheimer’s when they get older.
Please do Toxoplasmosis
As interesting as this video is, it is lessened by the soundtrack. Trying to absorb information while being forced to listen to that percussive beat is un-necessary and bothersome. And yes, I am in the music business!
If this disease is a byproduct of aging , wouldn’t extending health span be somewhat of a cure
Extended lifetime was not an issue before 16-18 centuries, our bodies are not prepared evolutionary for it.
TheSmokekoke none of these cures or treatments are used because our bodies are evolutionarily prepared for it. Even simple cough syrup doesn’t adhere to that . That’s not a valid point lol
@@dream1430 but what i really meant to say is...no, extended health span is not somewhat of a cure, it causes a lot of problems that people from middle age and before almost never faced, and yes the people responsible for medicine will have to deal with all that.
TheSmokekoke health span and life span are different , I think your confusing them .

Four years ago and here we are today with NOTHING from the medical community. Sticky proteins is Bullsh#T that we have put all our eggs in one failing basket. Dr.Dan.

What click bait, to say a drug is approved and then show a video that doesn't even mention it or it's effects!
the sound quality of this series is always so low on my phone.
Probably because it's playing in 144p
Amyloid beta...hmm the protein which is supposed to be "washed" during our sleep. But old people do not get much sleep.
Nil Lifter er The Container?
My medical teacher use to say back in her young days Alzheimer was rare she believe it's do to all the crap that's added to everything humans grow now and we consume.so everything she ate is organic
Rare because it's not being properly diagnosed?
People are living longer and to a greater age. In the past people were passing away from other illnesses before they developed dementia
Rare as in it wasn't diagnosed and was chocked up to "old age". Kind of like how Autism has spiked due to better diagnosis methods and not just assuming kids are "retarded".
@@AdamSmith-gs2dv Ah yes, because autism=Alzheimer's

How this 2 protein exists in our brains i mean that should be something there produces them 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
Please also find the cure for Parkinson Disease while you guys are at it. Both diseases are terrible!
It’s caused by lack of sleep
TheNaz being fat and lazy is bad too
It could be a risk factor but it is certainly not the definitive cause of 100% of Alzheimer's cases.
I wonder if there's a correlation between caffeine & nicotine, because of the increase in pressure and Atherosclerosis caused by these drugs. Probably the fat and cholesterol filled American Diet too.
Wait....toxin build up so sleep more will help at least in a way or the other?
RyanKoh 1210 yes
Toxins build up because of multiple reasons, glucose and fructose, being around chemicals, (eating bad food in general), etc
Sounds like a prion disorder. Self replicating proteins like mad cow, scary stuff.
Hocama bak be. Helal olsun size.
There is the book The End of Altzheimer.

I know sleep clears out toxins so makes since that not getting enough sleep much more likely to get it. I wonder if America has a higher rate due to our culture relating to work
Probably. Teens are definitely not allowed to get the sleep they need. I wouldn't be surprised if it hurts them in the long term.
