  • At the very end of the Cleveland line there's a little ferry that takes you to the South Moreton Bay Islands. It's a short* hike, but totally doable on public transport or bike.
In this vid I pack my bike and head to Macleay Island (Jencoomercha) for a couple of days of travel, light riding, exploring the beaches and local cuisine.
This is the first in a series where I travel to the very end of the line on the Translink network in Brisbane/Southeast Queensland and explore what's around.
it's short, but takes 50 minutes by bus
    ---
From Brisbane this is a 5 zone journey, travelling in zones 1 - 5. One way that's $10.86 on-peak, $8.69 off peak, or $15.70 if you don't have a go card (in 2021 at time of writing).
Travel on the ferries between the islands is freeeee.
    ---
My bike trip between Cleveland and Redland Bay ferry was pretty miserable and I don't recommend it unless you're confident.
I emailed Redland Council to ask their suggested bike route from the station to the ferry, and they pointed me to OpenCycleMap (osm.org/#map=1.... They suggest taking the Moreton Bay Cycleway which is a LOT longer but it's much safer and way more scenic along the coastline.
I might head back another day to try that instead.
    ---
The bird at the pub is the Bush Stone-Curlew, it's the one you can hear howling in the next shot. They're gorgeous.
Ryan calls it the Isle of Screams because there are so many of them, and they call through the night and in the mornings.
    ---
I didn't really describe this well, but for context a corroboree is "a generic word for a meeting of Australian Aboriginal peoples", per Wikipedia.
I wanted to research more Aboriginal history about the SMB islands, but there's not a lot online and it's usually presented as a footnote in colonial history. So while I know that's called Corroboree Park today, I don't know what the significance is other than that it's a truly beautiful place.

It is hey, don't you love how bicycle paths just stop. Like they ran out of concrete; funding or willpower

That's a nice vid Ash, thanks. I used to ride all round that area back in the late 90's early 00's. Hasn't changed much. I'm glad you managed to find the key in the end :)

@@AshKyd ok. Yeah I was thinking due to mangroves and water pools, mud and son on. Still looks beautiful and nestled amongst other islands so calm waters. Thanks for sharing this video 👍
