  • A mate and I went to chase prawns on the high tide at the Salt Works near Macleay Island, QLD. There was nothing on the sounder early and no other boats chasing any so we decided to wait until near the top of the high tide. We collected some yabbies and had a fish for some whiting and bream.
Good little fishing session, unfortunately no prawns at the top of the tide, only some little round jellies.

Great vid. Just wondering if you could recommend any spots to pump yabbies down this way? New to fishing on the southern part and curious where are some spots to look at.

Long island on the low tide however, I don't know if you'll get many in winter.

There are lots of good spots of the Island. There are two really nice sandy beaches you can fish from. One is nice and shallow. Great for whiting, bream and flatty's.
The other side, which has the netted off swimming area, also faces Straddie with nice deep water. Can catch anything from Snapper to Mackerel.
Then you also have the old jetty, next to the ferry pier. People have caught just about everything from there.
My Dad lived on Macleay for many years and my family would visit most weekends. I have been lucky as my Dad always has had a 30 odd foot boat. Always a bay chugga. Our last boat was The Beatsy. 35 foot 1978 bay chugga. Loved that boat. My Dad died a couple of years ago now and I couldn't keep up with the work needed nor the money needed to keep her. It was a very sad day seeing her go. A lot of our blood sweat and tears went into that old girls decks.
Ive never had to fish from the Island myself but I know many that have and do and they say its worth the time.
