CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Sand (Judy Davis) professes her love for Chopin (Hugh Grant) and reveals herself to be the author of the love letter.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Amandine Aurore Lucie Dupin, better known in the literary world as George Sand, not only took a man's name, but trotted around wearing pants and smoking cigars in public. No great shakes today, but in the 1800s she was perhaps the most famous (or infamous) woman in the world. One of the first original celebrities, aside from her garb and literary output, she was known to inspire many duels and broken hearts among other famous hedonist artists. One character describes her in Impromptu, as "that graveyard." The film engages in a sexual roundelay among Sand's (Judy Davis) many friends -- Eugene Delacroix (Ralph Brown), Alfred DeMusset (Mandy Patinkin), Franz Liszt (Julian Sands), and Frederick Chopin (Hugh Grant). The entire crew heads off to the summer estate of the Duke and Duchess d'Antan (Anton Rodgers and Emma Thompson), invited there by the culture-vulture hosts. Sand takes a bead on the sickly Chopin and spends her time throwing herself at him. Also on hand is Liszt's mistress Marie d'Agoult (Bernadette Peters) and Felicien Mallefille (Georges Corraface), Sand's recently jilted lover. Mallefille is jealous of any of the other guests who glance in Sand's direction and continually challenges them to duels. Marie, on the other hand, is enlisted by Sand to deliver a note to Chopin. But Marie, jealous of Sand, delivers the note substituting her name for Sand's. And as the weekend continues, the sexual merry-go-round continues at full tilt.

What I love about this is, that when Sand tells Chopin how she feels he's a bit shocked and makes a mistake (at around 0:20) The original piece sounds different but I have to say I sort of like this little turn (please tell me I'm not the only one who noticed this)

@@treyraderHe was not known for "messing up". He was known for being moody. When in good mood his playing was for many reasons unequaled, especially in refinement and expressiveness, when in bad mood (whatever that means), his playing was reserved and cool. But always perfect.
@@Seleuce ah ok. From research i gleaned that he was perfectionistic and anxious, not to mention physically ill, and this started taking a toll on his performances and so he deemed it best to just compose and play only when he felt like it. Typical pisces stuff.
So, did anybody catch the mistake “Chopin” made when playing right when she said “Im in love with you”… that shyt had me too weak!!!!😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
Judy Davis as George Sand takes her place with old fashioned heroines, bigger than life, magnificent and THOROUGHLY delightful. Up their with the classic stars.

George Sand's parting words struck Chopin like a thunderbolt. Those were the words in her letter to him, a letter to which Marie D'Algou signed her name.

George Sand is the timeless writer...
I remember this scene. She did get his attention when quoting her words in that letter before departing

She would have been my kind of woman back when this movie was made. But she'd be too much now
Not if you know what she did to Chopin and her own daughter. Sand eventially wrote a novel that portrayed him as a terrible, sickly person who wasted her life and portrayed herself as a martyr. Sand was abusive to Solange, her daughter, and Chopin didn't want any part of it because he saw the girl as his own child. The real hero in Chopin's life is Jane Stirling.

Sand had her own merits, she did put up with a lot for Chopin’s sake. She hosted him for long periods of times in Nohant and made sure he could concentrate on composing. She gave up the sexual side of their relationship because she was afraid it would kill Chopin. There was a lot of sacrifice and self-denial involved, and I can imagine at one point she couldn’t do it any more. Maurice was so against Chopin and Solange used Chopin in a way, too. Even though Sand had a preference with Maurice and she didn’t behave right, Solange did everything in her power to cause trouble, too- and used Chopin as a cover. It was very difficult dynamics, and wasn’t sustainable. The split was indeed cruel and Chopin received all the hatred that was harbored towards Clesinger and Solange. But Solange lied to Chopin, too and dragged him to the core of a hideous affair with which he had nothing to do. Sand assumed Chopin knew the facts, but he didn’t. So, all in all Solange was as guilty as Sand in that horrible break-up. I don’t think Chopin ever realised. Sand did try to get in touch with Chopin during his last months, but Chopin’s sister kept her away. Not sure if that was the right decision, maybe a reconciliation would have eased things for both of them (Chopin, who was dying and Sand who was left with remorse), but that’s how it happened. Heartbreaking.

The film is fun somehow. But Hugh Grand was the worst caricature of Chopin I have ever seen. So dull and boring and wrong.
They should have cast Alan Rickman for this back then, he had the right looks (like an actual brother of Frederic), the right mysterious charisma, the right strong, yet subtle expressiveness and the natural grace as people said Chopin, the man, possessed.
Hugh Grand just played a shallow, silly, timid little creature that had nothing to do with the extremely complex person of Frédéric Chopin, who had countless facets and faces, was infamous among those who knew him for his outstanding acting/mimicking skills, for his quick-wittedness, his ironic humour, sarcasm and, furthermore, was the writer of the most wonderful (and sad) long letters.
I have the strong impression the characters of Sand and Chopin were solely based on G. Sands highly peculiar, belittling and presumptuous way of looking upon and describing Chopin in her own letters to her friends. She was the only person out of hundreds who knew Chopin who called him "the boy" from the beginning of their odd relationship on, "Chip-Chip", later nastier diminutives entered her letters, "the invalid", "my dear corpse", "dear skeleton". None of the countless people who highly valued and treasured Chopin as a friend, colleague and genius musician ever called him such things in their correspondences. She also disrespected his decisions and opinions in letters to mutual friends and described and looked upon him like a juvenile teenager. I read all Chopin's published letters, he was anything but childish, actually rather mature and odly wise and objective. I have no idea why Sand had this strange mindset about him, which was present right before she actually knew him.
Anyway, watched it once, won't watch it again as Chopin is missing in the film.

She's too feminine to play the "cross-dressing" George Sand!
according to the makers of the movie she was chosen for the role because of her acting qualities, and because she embodied the spirit of G. Sand.
In the scenes where she dresses like a man, she acts more masculine. Judy Davis was perfect for this role.
She's better George Sand than Sand herself.
She definitely doesn't look the part of George Sand, especially if you actually look at paintings and drawing of Sand. But she has the fiery spirit of Sand and she has the acting chops. That's why she was selected to play Sand.
