    Every week you amaze me Marion . You are such a pleasure to watch. And so talented . You will never be lonely when you have such crafts at your fingertips. I am in my late 80s and sometimes their aren’t enough hours in the day. It is all about being happy in your own company.

      I hope I'm the same when I'm 80 Margaret! Finding interesting things to learn about and do. I'm nearly 65 and I know people who have no interest in anything.... I can't comprehend it..😅

      Isn't Marion just an angel for us 80 somethings?! She epitomizes the life I wish I had pursued. A farm girl, gone city, I studied fashion design and, the years of enjoying that avenue cannot erase my longing for Marion's world. Wish I had found her years ago.

      Yes Ann I agree we are lucky to have found her. You must have had a wonderful career. To see someone wearing what you have designed must by very satisfying. I was a draughtswoman and only had time for hobbies after I retired, but I have loved my retirement and have found many happy hours in creating.

      I' m 66 in July and love crafts and making things, as well as looking after some feral animals in my area. Both keep me fully occupied, nowadays I listen to audio books online while doing other crafts. I hope to be like you, Margaret and Marion, and always enjoy learning and making things. I actually keep my Biology qualifications current by doing online courses, simply so I know that I understand the science fully and am up to date with new discoveries and developments. I also do other courses that interest me, as you can do all these subjects online and only pay for the certificates if you needed them. I have no need for certificates but do have a need to keep challenging my brain and adding to my knowledge. Autodidacticism, is, I believe, what they call learning by yourself.

    I would put it on and never take it off. I have an old quilt top of my grandmother's, she lived to she was 99 and I think the fabric must be over 100 years old. She was born in 1887. She hand-quilted it in hexagon shapes. I think I will make a skirt out of it using your techniques. Thank you for always being an inspiration and showing us the joy of sewing❤

      The comments on this channel are wonderful. This is a wonderful community. Well, I’m one of the few who voted for the hinterland dress long ago. It’s really special to see how dresses are made in Marion’s World. I’ve learned how to stitch and that was augmented with info re flat feld seams and quilting. I want to do more =========== by hand. It’s meant to be pleasant. And it will be. Marion, your dress is lovely. I also like the ties. You get these benefits with stripes. Thanks for the video. 💜💜💜

    I think its wonderful that you do, and can, fully sew garments by hand. People do all sorts of crafts for all sorts of reasons, and if you are blessed with the ability to hand sew and embroider your own clothes, why wouldn't you? Theres nothing odd about you, Marion, the people who say "why would you?"are a different story. I would suggest envy as the reason? Historically, all garments were made by hand and the fact that hardly anyone can these days is disgraceful.

      Thanks for that! There's something so satisfying about handstitching a garment. And as I showed on this video... it doesn't take as long as people think. 4 days to sew a dress is not a huge length of time and that included a day just on the kawandi skirt!

    A UA-camr called Shannon Makes did a sewing room tour the other week, and she has a sewing bird, but she can’t use it much because the table top she uses most is too deep to clamp the bird too. So she only uses it on occasion when she sews in her living room. Lovely little thing! She had to repair the velvet on it, and it’s so cute. Hopefully you find one, one day!

    Your dress turned out beautifully. I've never been brave enough to hand sew a dress or blouse but I think I can try it. I was afraid it wouldn't be strong enough but watching you do it made it less scary.

    • @marionsworld24
      @marionsworld24  5 місяців тому

      Thank you. It will be strong enough. Just make sure you are using back stitch as a strength stitch on the appropriate seams and you'll be fine. My running back stitch seams are always double stitched. Either as a felled seam or a french seam. So there's two lots of stitching along them anyway. A skirt might be an easy project to start with as you'll just have a couple of long seams to practice getting even with. Then maybe gathering. Then backstitch to attach the waistband. Hemming or slip stitch to finish!

    I love how it turned out, I have also started making my own cloths and finding joy in the simplicity of hand sewing. its my zen time in a way. Its also time to think back on my grandmother teaching me how to sew. she passed a while ago and its like a visit with her when ever I take the time to sew.

    • @marionsworld24

      Hand sewing clothes is very different from embroidery. I know what you mean about it being Zen. It's the repetitive stitching that allows for it.🪡🧵

    Fascinating! It it a joy to watch. I’ve never seen anyone sew a complete dress by hand, and the longer I watched it seems or feels to me a lot like free motion quilting. In free motion quilting I have more control over the stitching and where I want to go and have that feeling of freedom to go from one type of pattern right into another without having to stop, pick a new stitch on the machine, change the foot, etc. You just kept sewing along however you needed. I don’t know if I am explaining it well enough, but I enjoyed the process right along side of you! How fun!

    • @marionsworld24
      @marionsworld24  17 днів тому +1

      I know what you meant Laura. I can turn my hand to free motion also and you can really get in the zone with it...
      I get a great deal of pleasure from wearing something I've totally made by hand.. and the stitching is just as strong as machining..

    Beautiful: I was just sitting here with a cup of tee and a brand new sewing project, a hand sewn dress, when your video popped on. What a wonderful coincidence. It was like sewing together with a special friend. 🙂 I do love pinafore dresses too. Can`t have enough of them. Right now I am making a simple dress in a japanese style. Perfect for hand sewing.

So now I deserve to watch your video with the Kawandi quilt in one go. That will be my prize for working hard all day, and I could not wish for a better treat. I could watch you hand sew all day! I love hand sewing, but I never have seen a dress b hand. But I love to embroider and cross stitch and hem and sew binding on by hand. So I know I would enjoy hand sewing a dress, but I’m too big I think. I’m 73 and About a size 2X or 3X. But I’ll sit and embroider while I watch you hand sew and do Kaiwani (spelling). Your fingernails are so pretty and it’s fun to watch you sew w/such pretty fingernails.

      The key is to find one that is so comfortable you can almost forget you're wearing it. Plus it does take a little practice. But it's worth it..you can see how easy it makes the sewing. It's not about only using it for difficult fabric. It actually smooths out the sewing action. Good luck!

    Marion, I found your channel looking for more Sashiko videos. Your needles are so perfect for your hand stitching of the Kawandi and are very like Sashiko on Boro. I was taken back to schoolday sewing lessons and may handsew my next garment instead of machining. Glimpsing your Bernina in the background made me think of Mum, passed away at 90, who had used her machine so much over the years, as did I whilst living at home. Thank you for your teaching method and for the history. I'm captivated by Kawandi, have never been interested in machine quilting but this is a different story.

    This dress is wonderful and colorful. It is pretty and so soft looking. That will be lovely in every weather condition and just to be comfy in the house. I do love the whole dress. What a great idea for the ties too. Thanks for showing short cuts on the hand sewing. I love the weight you made too. What a great idea to hold the fabric for you. I think that is great that you used what you had a made a beautiful project too.

    This dress is so beautiful. And you are very respectful of the heritage of the quilting style. I may make one similar. I think I would make the skirt longer and bring the waist line up, more like an empire waist. That is just a small difference that I would prefer for my body type. I love the ties and their placement, and of course the pockets are glorious!

    Thank you - that was such a learning experience. I am glad you mentioned the sewing bird (I call it a "third hand"). I saw one many years ago and didn't buy it - darn!!. When I have talked about it with some sewing friends they do not know what I am talking about. The one I wanted was metal . You attach it to a table and the "third hand" was a beautiful ladies delicate gloved hand that you would open, put the fabric in and close. It makes it so very easy to sew certain things. I am hoping you and I both find one someday soon. Thanks again

    Oh Marion, you certainly have a variety of wonderful projects! I am almost finished with my Marion-inspired needle book, and I have drawn a tree (I hope you don’t mind, I copied yours) to begin another piece of embroidery. Now I’m itching to do a Kawandi something! I’m having a good time stitching, thanks to you. I looked on eBay at quite a few Victorian bird sewing hands on there. I love your green ham! He seemed to do the job perfectly! From North Carolina in the USA, I eagerly await your next video! May God continue to bless and use you every day.

    I am really enjoying watching you work. I’m going through an emotional time right now, and that causes me to not want to use my machine. I like to just sit quietly and look at my hands and not say much. I have been crocheting little tiny doilies to use in Dreamcatchers. I have a quilt I need to work on, so maybe I’ll just do that by hand and don’t worry about the Sewing Machine. I bet I would get to it faster. Thank you for the inspiration.

    I love the dress and it looks so cute on you! Sometimes a sewing machine is easier but sometimes it isn't. Making ties by hand is easier to me than doing that turning business. I also stitch with old crochet cotton, I find them all the time. But I also crochet lace with it.
