So what about a vid explaing picking best subs and enclosures for internal car volume. Id like the cheapest (while still being reliable ) setup to almost have the potential to blow a window in my 2005 pontiac sunfire. Atm i have 2 jbl 1000s in parallel in a ported box in my trunk hooked to a low wattage amp prob putting out 350 rms and 2 planet audio 12 inch dual 4 ohm coil subs hooked to a boss riot 2400d at 1 ohm in reverse polarity to the jbl's. Found out that thats the best mix that that system could do, but my mom has 2 jl audio w3v3-4 12 inch subs in a ported box running at 200 watts rms total in her toyota celica 2004 and she still has twice as much bass as me
Hey caraudiofabrication I've been watching your videos and I think they are great! I'm now gonna add a more custom touch to my original subwoofer enclosure design.I have 2 15inch ssa audio evils and I plan to build my first custom box for them. I designed an 8.5 cu.ft box. But I'm also going to add a plexiglass window custom trim panels and custom lettering. Your videos have inspired me to take it further!
This is like my ap algebra 2 class. I try and follow along. Get distracted for like 2 secinds and dont have a clue what is happening the rest of the time.
I appreciate the fact that there's a few car audio channels that explain things in an intelligent, technical manner that's easy to understand. I hate when I load a video and it starts out like "y'all no wat it is, dis ya boi lil whoop whoop chek how hard dez fifteenz b slammin yo"
I cant begin to explain how much you've helped me over the last few months, thanks again for another great educational video. keep it up and great work.
Excellent man! I try explaining this to every customer/buddy of mine, but no one ever listens!! This is great. I didnt really think of doing an average like you did! Thats awesome!
Absolutely agree with getting a smaller size to fit the space better. I had two 10" JBL W7s in my truck and never really liked the sound of them. My friend explained that they were too big for the box I had and build me a box for two 8" Rockford Fosgate subs. The damn things rattled my truck with the amount of low end bass they put out. Couldn't get the 10s to do what the 8s were doing. I learned a lot that day that's for sure.
Some really good points made in this vid. Seems a lot of dudes will just buy subs with no real plan. This is a really easy way of getting an estimation of what airspace there is to actually work with rather than just the overall volume. Good work dude.
Your knowledge and Dedication to car audio is inspiring. Thank you for your time to explain this foreign language to us the best you can, your a dope teacher and thank you, you don’t know how much you help me!
Happy Friday! I hope this video helps you guys with planning and determining how much air space you have to work with. If you need help with your box design I can make one for you here: goo.gl/8RSC93
+Joe Gotti In the Ford Fusion, they have a huge trunk, so youd be safe with a single 15, 2 12's or 10's. If you arent to worried about loosing space, if you a space conservative, run a single 12 or 10 and call it good man! (Girlfriend has a Fusion I put a 12" P3 Fosgate in there on 600 rms. Great great set up, I recomend it, but there is also other brands! Do some research and pick what best would best suit your budget and music style!)
Calm down man. Hiding behind a keyboard while using the internet to vent your personal frustrations really does nothing for anyone. You had a good point with the geometry proving your point that it is fairly simple for people to figure out and do themselves. But then the rest just makes you look as ignorant as you preach others are being. It's unnecessary and to reiterate, it does not make you sound any more educated. Plus, the rest of us are so damn tired of seeing comments like this. It really ruins any good conversation that is actually taking place here.
+Adam Drake Well "said", it really does get tiring seeing all the hate that spills from the comment section of UA-cam. I do my best on here to be helpful and honest. Then you get the occasional "troll" that just wants to spit expletives at you. I have been directing those "keyboard warriors" to my Facebook page, letting them know they are more then welcome to "friend" me and we can have an intelligent and civil conversation, via Skype or any other VoIP service. Funny thing is they never respond let alone "man up" and show their true identity.
Question for future video: How to tune LOC and what do you suggest as an alternative to a LOC? Changing out a stock navigation unit isn't always an option and sometimes it is easier to run from the factory sub wiring that is already in the trunk. Thank you and keep up the great content!
Great video, very informative. I'm currently in the design stage of building a (single) 10" sub box for my 2006 Tacoma dble cab. Can't decide whether or not to build a ported or sealed enclosure. Have plenty of room behind the seat for either, just want to do whats best for sound quality.
I made this mistake! I had a 12" Sony Xplod P5 in a 2.5 cu ft L-ported box tuned to 30Hz (which I originally thought was 3.0 cu ft as I didn't realise how much volume the port took up) and it slammed lows hard. I already had to cut the hole bigger because the previous owner had a JL Audio 12w7 in it. I then cut the hole even bigger and put a 15" Xplod P5 in it. It was louder at higher bass frequencies but the lows went to shit. Was using a Soundstream XTA480.2 bridged on both. Now I have a 15" to 10" reducer in it with a 10" Alpine Type R off an LW Audio 1.1600 and it sounds better than ever!
I love all types of music. I like my sealed boxes but Ive thrown my subs in ported. I cant find the best tuning number to keep a good kick awhile simply switching tracks and enjoy some massive boom.
3:14 idk, all of my cars have had giant trunks. My sub is a 15 facing up, port back and it slams. All of my cars have been midsized sedans and my box only took up half the trunk. 4.88ft³, minus port air space is around 4.4ft³ at ~36.5Hz
Have you got a video on understanding what ports actually do to the tuning of a subwoofer and how to make sure you are tuning into a range of frequencies for your application?
I have a Cadillac STS and was looking to add more bass with my factory Bose speakers. After seeing this video, I like the patience and precision put into this job. How can I make an appointment?
I have a 350z ever done 2 subscribe and then 1 in the stock placement driver side behind the seat 2nd one behind passenger's seat where storage is. There's a big space back there.
Great info Mark. I'm sure this will help a lot of people choose their sub more carefully. I can't wait to make a new box for my car. Hoping to get a router table so I can use some of your techniques and make it stand out
+Russ Lyman I'm dealing with this now. I worked in car audio for about 6 years and got a great new job that is also in the automotive industry. I'm wondering if i can offset the cost of a nice router by doing side jobs. I should just buy one and make picture frames, they cost a ton lol.
+riothero313 thats great that you get to work with car audio and cars for a living. I'm just doing it in my spare time. I bought a Ok router a while ago and only have done a few things with it. I manly bought it and a circle cutting jig so I could cut speaker rings and make them flush mount. I would def benefit from having a router table I just need the room. It would either have to stay at my Moms house or wait till we get a house with more room ha
Russ Lyman Yeah, I went from the car audio side that had all of the top notch fabricating equipment to the mechanical side that has never even seen a table router lol.
Excellent video as always! I'm currently working on my A-Pillars and would love to see a video on that. Ima have to go to your website and get one of those shirts so I can represent here in Ar.
Good vid Mark. I do sorta the same thing. I measure the same way. But to find what I have I just take away 20 percent. And that gives me my air. But, then I have to consider port, sub and brace displacement. Thanks man. Even old dogs learn new tricks. LOL
what about down firing the subs into another piece of wood? Example building it to fire downward and building say 2" spacers and then bolting it all together?
Hey Mark thank you for the video because I am planning a build in my car and this helps a lot in planning for subs size, size of a box and also considering the space I have to work with in the trunk of my car. I have a question for you in regards to the car’s electrical system. I have a total of 4000 watts of equipments I need to in stall, my car comes stocked with an alternator that is a 110 amps and a stock batter that is 750 CCA. First question is; 1. Is this enough for the amount of watts I indicated? 2. If it’s not can you give a break down on how to go about upgrading the electrical?
Ok. So I can always use a smaller sub then the air space I have but not a larger sub then the space? So as long as I make my box with a larger space then what the sub can handle then I will be ok. I don't have to match the space precisely.
As always, great video! This would've definitely came in handy when I was designing my box. Luckily, size wasn't really a problem due to being a HT setup. Keep up the awesome work!
I really appreciate these videos, as a novice car enthusiast your channel is extremely informative in the car audio section, usully the first channel i look to for guides and how tos.
As always, solid video and great info. Have you ever considered doing a series of videos on OEM integration with head units that can't realistically be replaced? For example, Ford's Sync Touch system which is more along the lines of an "infotainment" system, which has functions that control climate in addition to media and navigation. JL Audio and Audison both make units to integrate OEM head units with aftermarket amps as I'm sure you're aware. Perhaps a series on taking a vehicle from stock to fully custom system while retaining the factory head unit would be a good idea. It occurs to me that the automakers around the globe are not slowing down with adding capability to their head units, which means that this sort of installation might become more ubiquitous as time marches on. Thanks for all of your work and expertise!
32 inch car subwoofers are legendary and only 1 subwoofer of this size was manufactured by a few companies and only be purchased through the manufacturer and can run you up to a million dollars and some 32 inch car subwoofers are not available to customers and are for display purposes only like the clarion 32 inch car subwoofer which is in a museum currently and was never available to customers to purchase
I want to see a video that explains the tradeoffs for picking subwoofers. Air space, linear excursion, resonant frequencies, and explanations of how these parameters affect sound.
Hey, heres a question. i have a frs and since the backseat behind the driver seat is unusuable i was thinking it would look cool to either have a port or a sub face out of the backseat behind me and maybe do a lighting effect or something. but wanted to know if it would be too much trouble to do that please.
Great video...it will be awesome if you make a video about trucks with no space. How can you help us with that ? Any ideas.? Different than installing them under the back seat...
I'm trying to build a compact bow for a long profile boss speaker mostly because i have four kids and don't have room to give up. you ever do any hidden sub installs? Maybe i missed that one. Big fan of your videos
my general take: if the woofer size is larger it can reproduce the low ranges better, giving you more low freq base sounds and with more volume? (as long as its in its proper box, airspace, power etc)-if true how do you get more bass from the low end (like 5hz to 30hz) when your airspace would only allow 1 12" or 1 10" woofer? I am sure there are probably some eq tricks or other means of boosting the lower signals, but that is not the answer I seek.
Love your videos! You are very smart... I am not that smart, I just bought sub and a box together directly from the manufacturer p3 1X12... That eliminates all the problems for people not as advanced as you.. At least for me...
HEY!!! just subscribed, but Ive been watching your channel for a long time now, I have a sundown Ev312 in a 1.8c.u. q-bomb slotted box powered by a razor 2500watt max class d mono block amp, a pioneer double din head unit, and the boss chaos extreme door and dash speakers for my 96 single cab Sonoma, shit rocks!!!!
Excellent information right there. Thanks again for a fantastic guide. Can you talk about mid-range speaker selection sometime? Some of the questions I had were: Do I need to build a box for mids? Do this foam baffles work in place of a box? Should I worry about porting a mid, or build a sealed enclosure? How much power do I need for my mids to work with that new subwoofer so that I have the right balance in sound and not too little or to much bass from the subwoofer? Should I worry about placement and the angle to the listeners ear?
I have a good Question for you... What is a good/best way to determine your volume with a fiberglassed/custom formed box(that isnt square). I Heard a trick was to fill it with gallons of water and convert it, but that seems a little far fetched. I know you can actually do the geometrical computations but just wondering if there's a trick out there. Thanks
So how do I calculate/find out how much air space the subwoofer takes up? (Subwoofer volume) Subwoofer displacement is the displacement of the air on each stroke, this is not what I am asking.
Wow, that's really cool that you took your previous designs to come up with the magic number. I like that. @6:31 A little confusing, but I do understand that building a smaller or larger port will net you more or less cubic feet of air space - And I think what you are trying to address with the lower vs. higher powered system (with a smaller vs. larger port) is trying to avoid port noise. Is that what you were talking about there? If so, I thought that adjusting the port opening size to eliminate port noise (assuming a constant tuning frequency) wouldn't actually adjust the volume of the port itself. Is this correct? Hope I'm making sense here! Thanks for the video!
+Jacob Frey It is not correct. A larger port (diameter on a round port or opening on a slot port) must be longer to keep the same tuning frequency if the box size does not change. You can see the match at diysubwoofers.org or use a program like WinISD, Unibox or even some online port calculators to see how this works.....While WinISD will show you that you are reaching audible port noise with a traditional port, flaring it will allow you to go past the simulated audible limits with no impact to sound quality. Here are some findings - www.subwoofer-builder.com/flare-testing.htm
I got my 15 firing into my deck lid and it still stomps ass lol and it's in a crappy Pyle wood box and a round pipe port but sounds awesome building a new mdf box soon
I have a under the back seat pair of subwoofers in my truck. Now how can I use those measurements from this point on? or how those measures play in a truck.
I want to built a fiberglass box for my Jeep TJ on the rear floor. How would I determine the size? Flood the fiberglass and measure the liters then convert to cubic ft?
Great videos, they are beneficial. What do you recommend when trying to use a free-air subwoofer setup? I have a 2017 Toyota Camry SE. I just changed the factory head unit to an Android using the factory speakers which will also be altered. I want a moderate to aggressive sound with deep bass.
So what 10” speaker should I install in 15”x12”x15” box for my smart car? I was thinking Rockford fosgate 10” 250rms should be enough for smart what do you guys think??? Please let me know. Thanks!
So I am the biggest noob when it comes to car audio. I would like to put subs in my regular cab 2019 1500 Silverado but when I purchased the box that went under my seat and installed my amp and sub it sound was very disappointing. Can you do a video on what you need to know for Truck Down Fire or sub install 101 for pick up trucks?
Excellent vid and very insightful. What are your thoughts on sealed subwoofer boxes. Do you have a magic number to calculate airspace? Keep the vids coming very cool.
In general, is the bigger the box is, the louder/better it is? like if the manufacturer recommends 2.5 cubic ft, would it be better/louder at 3 cubic ft?
+Aaron Edwards This is the point I was trying to make. :) Now of course you could always get rid of bracing, or reduce the port size and get a little bit more air volume... but then your box may not be as sturdy and may have port air noise issues. It's all a balancing act, hopefully the guideline in the video can help with having a better idea of a true starting point for the airspace so folks can make a good subwoofer decision. Thanks for watching!
I own a Harley Davidson street glide Bagger. How would add bass to my motorcycle? Motorcycle audio is on the rise and I am particularly curious to what you think would work best for sub bass on a bagger!!
Need to find out exactly how to match internal car speakers with the correct watt amplifier? I would really like it to be easy is there a website that will just allow you to enter your speaker make and model and then provide you with amps that will work with those speakers?
Can you please explain how to get super deep bass quality would love to see a demo, in 1998 some guy had 4 tsp 12” single 4 ohm on trunk deck and those hit very deep and far bass
Want a super challenging build?! Try designing a ported box that still allows the roof to fit in the trunk for a corvette and sits tucked up in the corner and takes advantage of the cubby. I tried and it rattles so much.
I have a hatchback that I can fold the seats down on, I never use the back seats, where do I start when deciding a subwoofer system for it? Volume isn't really a factor due to the abundance of space in the back of the vehicle
I don’t want the subwoofer and box too take up too much space in the trunk, is there such thing as a subwoofer and box being too small for the available space?

Just found this channel. Excellent content, great presentation and knowledge that even the 'noobs' can understand!
I want to see a video that explains the tradeoffs for picking subwoofers. Air space, linear excursion, resonant frequencies, and explanations of how these parameters affect sound.

that magic # .55 does help out , thanks
Hey, heres a question.
i have a frs and since the backseat behind the driver seat is unusuable i was thinking it would look cool to either have a port or a sub face out of the backseat behind me and maybe do a lighting effect or something. but wanted to know if it would be too much trouble to do that please.
Great video...it will be awesome if you make a video about trucks with no space. How can you help us with that ? Any ideas.? Different than installing them under the back seat...
i never knew the size went down thank you alot
I'm trying to build a compact bow for a long profile boss speaker mostly because i have four kids and don't have room to give up. you ever do any hidden sub installs? Maybe i missed that one. Big fan of your videos
do the same calculations work for a forth order box with the sub's inverted? cone facing the sealed section and magnets in the ported side.
+doughanaway No, this will not work for fourth order bandpass. Fourth order bandpass have a sealed section so it messes up the average.
where the hell do i find the recommended air space rating for a sub? ive googled and i cant find anything that mentions air space
You need to calculate the data on the speaker, then you can get what type of inclosing, size and amount of dampening material you need.
my general take: if the woofer size is larger it can reproduce the low ranges better, giving you more low freq base sounds and with more volume? (as long as its in its proper box, airspace, power etc)-if true how do you get more bass from the low end (like 5hz to 30hz) when your airspace would only allow 1 12" or 1 10" woofer?
I am sure there are probably some eq tricks or other means of boosting the lower signals, but that is not the answer I seek.
u can also have ur radio in reverse bass or normal mode an keep ur sub the same
Love your videos! You are very smart... I am not that smart, I just bought sub and a box together directly from the manufacturer p3 1X12... That eliminates all the problems for people not as advanced as you.. At least for me...
A custom box is really not hard to do and also typically gives you better results than a pre-built box
RWL2012 I don't have the tools or the place to make it.
HEY!!! just subscribed, but Ive been watching your channel for a long time now, I have a sundown Ev312 in a 1.8c.u. q-bomb slotted box powered by a razor 2500watt max class d mono block amp, a pioneer double din head unit, and the boss chaos extreme door and dash speakers for my 96 single cab Sonoma, shit rocks!!!!
When you say a thousand watts. Are you talking about peek power or nominal (rms) power?
Excellent information right there. Thanks again for a fantastic guide. Can you talk about mid-range speaker selection sometime? Some of the questions I had were: Do I need to build a box for mids? Do this foam baffles work in place of a box? Should I worry about porting a mid, or build a sealed enclosure? How much power do I need for my mids to work with that new subwoofer so that I have the right balance in sound and not too little or to much bass from the subwoofer? Should I worry about placement and the angle to the listeners ear?
+u9Nails These are some great questions for a future video! Thank you!
can you make a video on how to make a box for under the seat on a 2004 tundra access cab and witch subwoofer would work best?
Btw I'm not knocking you I think you do pretty good work man.
+Aaron Schmkr You're fine man :) Thanks.
Hatchbacks and SUV not catered for? Firing up in a hatchback or station wagon is great also
I have a good Question for you... What is a good/best way to determine your volume with a fiberglassed/custom formed box(that isnt square). I Heard a trick was to fill it with gallons of water and convert it, but that seems a little far fetched. I know you can actually do the geometrical computations but just wondering if there's a trick out there. Thanks
I talk about that in this video: ua-cam.com/video/-kD8bJK7EoI/v-deo.html
Differential equation
Packing peanuts.
I just normally go half on total cubic space. Unless it's a tight sub spot. Then just cover sub systems with an under seat sub.
I have two 12" Kenwood Road Series subs in my 2006 Ford Taurus SEL. I hear the trunk rattle louder than the subs at this point
Angel's_Gaming no one care’s what a furry thinks
I got my 15 firing into my deck lid and it still stomps ass lol and it's in a crappy Pyle wood box and a round pipe port but sounds awesome building a new mdf box soon
I have a under the back seat pair of subwoofers in my truck. Now how can I use those measurements from this point on? or how those measures play in a truck.
I want to built a fiberglass box for my Jeep TJ on the rear floor. How would I determine the size? Flood the fiberglass and measure the liters then convert to cubic ft?
Was hoping you have an idea for a box for a wrangler unlimited! I'm looking to do a super custom setup
is there also a way to calculate the enclosure size if you already have the subwoofer (bought it used without knowing any parameters but the size...)?
So for clarity, in an SUV do I just measure the trunk area? Does it matter than it isn't a separate enclosed trunk like you typically see on a sedan?
Great videos, they are beneficial. What do you recommend when trying to use a free-air subwoofer setup? I have a 2017 Toyota Camry SE. I just changed the factory head unit to an Android using the factory speakers which will also be altered. I want a moderate to aggressive sound with deep bass.
what do u recommend for a 2016 honda accord just one bass speaker
+Rob Oso Do a single 10 or 12, in either a sealed or ported.
+Ryan Rosier do you have anything for me that I can use and how much will it be
I have an extra Fosgate P3 12 laying around. But that is about it lol.
@@russetpotato123 Is it about the same for a 2009 accord?
Which sub, size and enclosure type of box would you recommend for a 2007-2018 Jeep at 4-ohms?
Bro. You’re are smart. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Can you replace a factory subwoofer for better bass without sacrificing space or should I build a box
So what 10” speaker should I install in 15”x12”x15” box for my smart car? I was thinking Rockford fosgate 10” 250rms should be enough for smart what do you guys think??? Please let me know. Thanks!
I would like for u to cover wrapping door panels and dash boards. I wanna do mine in ultra suede with the stitching
Looks like the 12 in that 2.5 cuft box is really peaky and doesn't have a flat response curve.
Great video the magic number had me like this 😲 I had no idea it was reduced by so much.
Motorcycle audio is on the rise and I am particularly curious to what you think would work best for sub bass on a bagger!!
are you using the outside measurements or inside measurements of the box to start with?
Need to find out exactly how to match internal car speakers with the correct watt amplifier? I would really like it to be easy is there a website that will just allow you to enter your speaker make and model and then provide you with amps that will work with those speakers?
Good info on the page. Have you done a box for a 2000 Ford Ranger super cab in the side seat cubby hole?
Now the fun begins!!!!
what do you recommend for 215 Rockford Fosgate T2 inside a 2003 Chevy Monte Carlos SS
moar powar!
Can you please explain how to get super deep bass quality would love to see a demo, in 1998 some guy had 4 tsp 12” single 4 ohm on trunk deck and those hit very deep and far bass
Hello sir...need a box measurements for single vibe black air 12d2
And for dual black air 12d2's
🤯math
Want a super challenging build?! Try designing a ported box that still allows the roof to fit in the trunk for a corvette and sits tucked up in the corner and takes advantage of the cubby. I tried and it rattles so much.
C6^
+ppage27 Spend the money on a sweet set of tuned exhaust and you don't need a stereo, the car makes it's own music.
What would I need for a ported box of I had One 12 inch Rockford P3 running at 500rms watts of a rockford prime amp? 2010 G37 sedan is the car.
Is it possible to make a 4th order with an existing box that’s already slotported by just adding more wood?
Bad idea as it won't be precisely calculated at all.
