One benefit I give the first EQG movie is that it fallows the tropes if the typical teenage school drama movie , popularized by "Mean Girls" in the 2000's and gave a lot of those tropes new logical reason & weight. -Twilight isn't just an awkward new girl to be quirky, but because she's in a completely new world and body. -Twilight doesn't just want to beat Sunset for the crown as revenge against a bully, but because it is to dangerous in the wrong hands. -And she is able to rallys a support group of friends from different cliques, despite having nothing in common, because she has seen first hand that they can be best friends like they are in her world.
Equestria Girls was such a fun franchise and truly a product of its time. Rainbow Rocks is my favorite movie, next to the first. It also has a BOMB soundtrack!
I loved these movies. I'm kinda sad Sunset didn't get her backstory movie that they planned instead of the christmas special. The animators and story writers wanted to make Sunsets backstory movie. How she was in the pony world, how she was with Celestia, how she faired first in the human world and about her human counter-part. But no. The higher ups wanted a christmas special🙄

Maybe Hasbro didn't want to make this story because it would become too emotional for kids and adults. Pony Sunset Shimmer would return to Equestria for good and the human would return to her own world. That would basically be the real end of the Equestria Girls as the branch of MLP Gen 4.

They were going to introduce the native human version of Sunset Shimmer, and the plot was going to revolve on the universe potentially collapsing if she doesn't return to Equestria, IIRC. The script writer mentioned it on twitter.

I think yeah their designs are simple and repetitive, but that’s what made so many kids able to easily draw their own characters in the original animation. I think they made the right call with the rainbow skin colors. If they were normal skin colors they would have been ordinary dolls. Ponies don't come in all those colors and nobody complains. Also, it helps you tell who you are looking at right away.
The reason why they didn’t follow through the human skintones is because the brony fandom had a huge racism problem. So they went with colorful skin instead

I might be the only one, but I’m actually glad the ponies didn’t get realistic skin tones when they were redesigned for equestria girls. I feel like the team would’ve had a hard time tackling diversity and caused some controversy no matter what skin colors they chose to give the girls, after all we saw what happened with the little mermaid
i agree! and having to make sure their color pallets worked with whatever skin tone they got. i love that they kept the colorful skin, and (at least to me) they might’ve been less recognizable (especially the side characters) without their iconic colored skin :P

I always thought that Flash was way overhated, I did not care for him either, he was generic and cliche, but this was Hasbro cash grab, I dont know why people expected Arcane levels of character development, I mean, even the main girls were just stereotypes, just with more screentime.
Aside from any aesthetic considerations (which I don't have a problem with, for the record), I like EG because it has a consistent and interesting theme. All stories involve characters who have objects imbued with Equestrian magic, that give them powers matching their personalities and desires, and we explore how these characters use these powers and what it leads to. It shows how power corrupts and what makes someone more or less corruptible. The solution always ends up being human connection and community (i.e., Friendship) as a way to rein in one's dark thoughts. I like to say it's all variations on the Ring of Gyges from Plato's Republic, but with a happy ending.
Definitely felt like Equestria Girls should have been college students, that would have made way more sense than Highschool. Rarity owns like 3 boutiques for Celestia's sake 😂 None of them are under 18 by any stretch, it always makes me laugh. Rainbow Dash is literally in the military and Fluttershy runs her own entire animal reserve. But nah, they're totally highschool girls 🤣

I fell in love with MLP: Equestria Girls just very recently and I'm 18 years old I couldn't find a way to watch it when I was younger so when I started watching it a few days ago I immediately fell in love, I loved the music and soundtracks and I love the friend dynamic as well. I love how the girls are so relatable and I saw a lot of me inside of them although I'm a male but I could relate so much to these Equestria Girls for some reason, I'll always love the films and it really shows the true raw meaning of friendship. I love how the Girls "Pony Up" when they come together and express their true selves and sing together.During the end of each show I literally almost ball into tears, I loved it although there were some inconsistencies and some unanswered questions but it was very lovable and I think it was amazing and I loved the character designs and the voice actors/actresses they can sing phenomenally. All in all, I love Equestria Girls, kinda makes me wish I grew up with a girls friend group because I feel I could learn a lot of them, but anyways I loved the films and I wish they continued on this because I feel it has potential that was my opinion, I would like to hear what others think about my opinions
As far as I was aware, Ponyville was in Canterlot, and still under the more direct rule of Celestia and Luna, unlike the Crystal Empire. I also think that Sci Twi goes to Crystal Prep because her brother married the Vice Principle.
@@hirumaiya I think Shining Armor might have a position at the school, but he and Cadence are both said to be graduates of Crystal Prep, with Cadence definitely working there (Vice Principal, or possibly more like a Dean of Students kind of deal), hence why Twilight chose to go there. It's entirely likely that they are part of the reason she was able to attend, given that I feel like Crystal Prep is a private (and probably expensive!) school...also probably a hardcore college preparatory academy aiming for high academics, another reason someone like Sci-Twi would want to attend, as she'd want the educational challenge.

I remember this franchise with great fondness. My childhood friend and I would pull up the Rainbow Rocks songs on UA-cam to sing along and perform our own versions of the scene. But I also remember not being allowed to own any of the doll counterparts because according to my dad, "they dressed too skimpy" (This logic also applied too Monster High, Bratz, and Ever After High dolls.)
So many memories... I remember creating my alicorn oc, the daughter of princess Luna who was best friends with Twilight 😭😭😅 I used clay and made a custom pony and all
Another thing that I like about EG are the background students. They're much more unique than background ponies, and they have pretty consistant roles (the shorts even provide most of them with some personality traits)

Got into MLP as a senior in high school during the end of Season 4. Liked Equestria Girls a lot. Got hooked by the time Rainbow Rocks released. Watched as much Equestria Girls as I could after that.
There is absolutely no basis for this hc other then my own life experiences, but i always imagined that sunset shimmer was put into the foster care system after the school found out she was homeless. More an au then a hc but it made young me feel more represented and less alone in the world lol

I am probably late to this, but I had the Rainbow Dash EG mini! Although it was well articulated and probably the most design-accurate toy released, it always felt too delicate and flimsy to play with? I remember the leg joints feeling weak, and being almost nervous to play with her lol.
When I was a kid I fell in love with it and I loved their designs. I never had a problem with anything or questioned anything. I thought people loved it as much as I did 😰

I LOVE the Equestria Girls series! As the movies/shows went on, they do have more concrete storyline. I love the messages the put into the movies and the outfits are ICONIC. I love them!!!💖💖
I personally love the Friendship games a lot because I relate heavily to human Twilight. only finding comfort in learning, feeling severely lonely but unsure if I could/would make any friends, being easily swayed and pressured by my peers. it’s an all around amazing movie!! + I’m pretty sure that Camp Everfree focuses on trauma/PTSD which is very interesting 👀
Forget how much celestia knows about this world how much does pinky and human pinky know because during the first movie both know what going on just because of a hunch and in the third movie scene that not in the movie of pinky switching places with human pinky which might not be cannon but would explain a lot of stuff about pinky in that movie.
Remembering when the first movie came out, I think a lot of the general complaint about the style was for the fact that it was shown theatrically, despite looking more basic than any of the other doll animations at the time. If it had been a direct to video/tv special, I think at least some of the criticisms would have lessened.
That's what I was thinking. Though another factor that pretty much cursed EG, was the timing of its release. Bring released in-between the Princess Twilight controversy with bronies spreading that whole "Anti-alicorn" agenda, and the overwhelmingly negative hype surrounding Season 4. EG just didn't stand a chance. A perfect victim of a piece of media being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Actually, we were supposed to find out what happened to Sunset Shimmer from the human world! The writer of the newer specials (Nick Confalone) revealed on Twitter that Equestria Girls was originally going to end with a special where Sunset Shimmer had to face her past and we would find out what happened to her human counterpart! Unfortunately, Hasbro saw no point in investing further in this spin-off, which resulted in ending the series with a strange holiday music video (if I am not mistaken). Good video, I enjoy watching this kind of deep dives. I love that you do physical scrapbooks instead of some video editing bullet points etc, but I think it could be a lot more refined if you had a static stand for your camera instead of handheld?

Though honestly, I would have overall preferred Equestria Girls be almost like Friends was, where they're adults living their lives and have a main house they always hang out at, which could easily be Twilight's house or Sunset's.

The EQG films and series proved they can do things on their own without relying so much on MLP. I enjoy both equally.

I fell in love with MLP: Equestria Girls just very recently and I'm 18 years old I couldn't find a way to watch it when I was younger so when I started watching it a few days ago I immediately fell in love, I loved the music and soundtracks and I love the friend dynamic as well. I love how the girls are so relatable and I saw a lot of me inside of them although I'm a male but I could relate so much to these Equestria Girls for some reason, I'll always love the films and it really shows the true raw meaning of friendship. I love how the Girls "Pony Up" when they come together and express their true selves and sing together.During the end of each show I literally almost ball into tears, I loved it although there were some inconsistencies and some unanswered questions but it was very lovable and I think it was amazing and I loved the character designs and the voice actors/actresses they can sing phenomenally. All in all, I love Equestria Girls, kinda makes me wish I grew up with a girls friend group because I feel I could learn a lot of them, but anyways I loved the films and I wish they continued on this because I feel it has potential that was my opinion, I would like to hear what others think about my opinions

As far as I was aware, Ponyville was in Canterlot, and still under the more direct rule of Celestia and Luna, unlike the Crystal Empire. I also think that Sci Twi goes to Crystal Prep because her brother married the Vice Principle.

@@hirumaiya I think Shining Armor might have a position at the school, but he and Cadence are both said to be graduates of Crystal Prep, with Cadence definitely working there (Vice Principal, or possibly more like a Dean of Students kind of deal), hence why Twilight chose to go there. It's entirely likely that they are part of the reason she was able to attend, given that I feel like Crystal Prep is a private (and probably expensive!) school...also probably a hardcore college preparatory academy aiming for high academics, another reason someone like Sci-Twi would want to attend, as she'd want the educational challenge.

I remember this franchise with great fondness. My childhood friend and I would pull up the Rainbow Rocks songs on UA-cam to sing along and perform our own versions of the scene.
But I also remember not being allowed to own any of the doll counterparts because according to my dad, "they dressed too skimpy" (This logic also applied too Monster High, Bratz, and Ever After High dolls.)

There is absolutely no basis for this hc other then my own life experiences, but i always imagined that sunset shimmer was put into the foster care system after the school found out she was homeless. More an au then a hc but it made young me feel more represented and less alone in the world lol

been absolutely loving all these mlp deep dives i've been seeing pop up recently on youtube. i was part of the mlp fandom since season 1 (i was literally like 11 so i was the target audience but i liked the fandom part of it LMAO) and it's so interesting to have seen the birth, the death, and the autopsy of this fandom. i haven't been seriously into mlp since maybe 8th grade though lol

I am probably late to this, but I had the Rainbow Dash EG mini! Although it was well articulated and probably the most design-accurate toy released, it always felt too delicate and flimsy to play with? I remember the leg joints feeling weak, and being almost nervous to play with her lol.

I personally love the Friendship games a lot because I relate heavily to human Twilight. only finding comfort in learning, feeling severely lonely but unsure if I could/would make any friends, being easily swayed and pressured by my peers. it’s an all around amazing movie!!

Forget how much celestia knows about this world how much does pinky and human pinky know because during the first movie both know what going on just because of a hunch and in the third movie scene that not in the movie of pinky switching places with human pinky which might not be cannon but would explain a lot of stuff about pinky in that movie.
The reason sunset is just us sally in the background in rainbow rocks is because originally see wasn’t supposed to be in it from what I heard.

Remembering when the first movie came out, I think a lot of the general complaint about the style was for the fact that it was shown theatrically, despite looking more basic than any of the other doll animations at the time. If it had been a direct to video/tv special, I think at least some of the criticisms would have lessened.
That's what I was thinking. Though another factor that pretty much cursed EG, was the timing of its release. Bring released in-between the Princess Twilight controversy with bronies spreading that whole "Anti-alicorn" agenda, and the overwhelmingly negative hype surrounding Season 4. EG just didn't stand a chance. A perfect victim of a piece of media being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Actually, we were supposed to find out what happened to Sunset Shimmer from the human world! The writer of the newer specials (Nick Confalone) revealed on Twitter that Equestria Girls was originally going to end with a special where Sunset Shimmer had to face her past and we would find out what happened to her human counterpart! Unfortunately, Hasbro saw no point in investing further in this spin-off, which resulted in ending the series with a strange holiday music video (if I am not mistaken). Good video, I enjoy watching this kind of deep dives. I love that you do physical scrapbooks instead of some video editing bullet points etc, but I think it could be a lot more refined if you had a static stand for your camera instead of handheld?

I think a huge reason for its existence was to compete with Monster High, another line of dolls by a competitor with brightly colored skin tones.
