1983 Honda XR200R: how much fun can 15hp be in the woods?

- I take the '83 XR200R into my woods for the first time to relive my teenage years when I was cutting my teeth learning woods riding with an '87 XR200R...that was over 25 years ago! It doesn't take me long to remember why I hold many fond memories of that bike still to this day...

For the old guys; any 1984 bike with 1984 riding areas would be more fun than any modern bike in modern riding areas. There used to be so much open space to ride, it's almost all gone now. 100% all gone in my area.
What part of the country are you in? This chunk of land I ride is in PA and lucky enough to be around since the late 60s. Most of the stuff we ride is private property but since less people ride these days, it really isn’t a problem.
@@Garage2Trail you are lucky, enjoy it! I'm in S FL, 100% of my childhood riding areas have been developed and are now occupied by city people. We're lucky enough to have a couple of MX tracks about an hour away, the nearest public land legal to ride on is a 4 hour drive.
Long island NY too. All the areas have been developed and we go to gods land others known as PA. Lol
Had posters of that bike all over my walls as a kid. Never did get one and still get lost in daydreams when I see one. Thank you for this video it is thoroughly appreciated and enjoyed.

@Garage2Trail this bike deserves a full restoration. There really are very bikes like it that still have such easy performance after nearly 40yrs.
This sounds like a BUCKET LIST item for you!!!! Try to find one. Dreams are there for a reason! You will not regret it , I just turned 50 and started riding again and I feel like I'm in my 20s❤! Not as fast but the feelings are still the same💯

I had a 86 and a 87 xr200r..The best wheelie bike ever imo and it was bulletproof...The front end was a little soft if you jumped anything big but overall I miss em both.Thanks for the video..Be safe
Best and toughest Ike I’ve ever rode, they were ahead of their time, future models were not as good because they had less suspension and lowered to the ground to accomidate smaller riders. They had light front ends and were hard the keep the front tire on the ground while pulling hills. I believe if riders could ride these bikes today they would be amazed and buy them……….
I agree! If they could find a way to keep the engine simple and reliable and eek out just a bit more top end power and leave the rest alone with this chassis/pro link suspension, that would be killer.
Been waiting for this one! I have a 1990 XR200R and I love it! Here in NW NJ the terrain is like yours, maybe a bit more rocky, and the XR loves it. The thing goes up hills like a billy goat, and it is just so light and flickable! It is by far my favorite dirt bike. Good luck with her and don't get rid of her!
I dont think I’ll ever sell this one! Just got done putting a new clutch/springs in and it’s even better.
I am surprised you haven't serviced the suspension. That may do wonders for this bike. As is however, I love it. Brings me back to the old days.
I was really itching to ride it lol. I just may do that because I really think I’d like to do some vintage hare scrambles on it!

Neat neat neat - the new plastics and the refurb of the old ones look good. I like that you do 'just enough' restoration so the age still shows.
My xl500 came with forks right flush on the clamp and it rode badly - l RTFM and realised the forks should be high in the clamp - made all the difference 👍🏻
Thank you! I think I may try dropping those forks just a bit to see if it improves handling.
They are awesome I had an XR350 re in 1984 and my mate an XR200 occasionally swapped bikes and I loved the 200 on the tight trails best bike ever now a CrF 300l close but bit heavy
Cool , I think I was 16 , my friend had a 85 ( I think ?) twin carb model , I had a 85 cr 500, “way more fun to ride a slow bike fast than ride a fast bike slow”, I had so much fun on that little 200 ,one of the best summers of riding of my life , thanks for sharing , that’s a great little bike that can really do almost anything!! You got a really nice bike there !!
Thank you! That old saying is very true. I have an XR650R that is an absolute beast but is downright scary in the woods and wears you down. This 200 you can do anything as long as you have that momentum on your side.
i used to jump my 81 200R 4 feet in the air. That bike took a ton of abuse and very little maintenance. I was 16yo
A true testament to how reliable these bikes are!

Bought two 200s new in 82 because my friend and I wanted to ride the same, we went from riding radical Husky bikes to lower HP Honda 200s. We had the best riding of our life. They were unstoppable on hills once I leaned down the float. Turn carb upside down bend tab until float is parallel to the gasket surface and maybe slightly leaned in when carb held upside down without depressing the needle and dont depress the spring loaded needle, just turn carb float up slightly tilted and with float tab slightly touching the needle while needle is seated, the float should be parallel to the gasket surface which a slight tip towards the gasket surface

I had the 85 250R XR back in the '90s till a mate blew it up wheeling it too much and the valve went through the top cover. Now at 53 years young I have the unbreakable TT350

In 1984 I bought a very lightly used 83 with my own money when I was 14. I spent many hours riding and could do pretty good wheelie on it.

Very cool! I have an '83 XL200R very similar. I like street legal bikes. Your bike handled the tech stuff really well, obviously the rider makes all the difference, but I was still impressed how well your bike did. Makes me want to take my XL out to see what it can do on some tougher terrain. I enjoyed the video. 👍👊
Thank you Greg, I appreciate it! You should give it a go. They are pretty capable. My friend had an XL180 that he used primarily as a dirt bike when we were in high school with all the stuff stripped off of it. It was a good woods bike too.

Thank you Peter! I JUST got done putting a clutch in it but didn’t record because I was crunched for time. I wanted to get it ready for its full “10mile hard-ish enduro” video I’ll be doing today so that will at least be out soon! We have perfect weather today and wanted to make sure it was ready to go.
