  • I did not expect, of all series, for Star Trek Enterprise to give me my favorite captain speech of all time. But I absolutely loved this.
    If you're like me, and gave up on ST:E early, watch seasons 3 and 4 if you get a chance. It got -so much better-, even if the last episode was pretty crap.
    Anyway, this is my first youtube upload. It seemed sad that this speech wasn't up here where people could appreciate it.

    Star Trek Enterprise, for all the flaws it had in the beginning, this is its definitive moment. As for Archer himself, the diplomats that draft the treaties will get the press attention, but Archer was the man out on the frontier doing the real hard work that brought all those races together. He's the one that brought the Vulcans, Andorians, and Tellarites together and made them all allies.

    I agree with you completely except for the last episode. It leads up to a foundation moment for the rest of the canon and does it in a way every fan has: "I have a very deep problem...how do I fix it? How would Captain Picard/Archer/Sisko/Kirk/Janeway approach it?" The Cook is never shown until that episode, so it leaves a question of if this entire series was a holodeck simulation (like we saw in TNG/VOY with other historical settings). Something that...in a few years we're likely going to have to start dealing with as entertainment and VR tech get closer to holodecks. It also gives a unique perspective into each character. A final good bye of sorts. To me it isn't so much a bad writing point as a unique way of saying "I'll miss you, thanks for the ride." to a series that for those that loved it and stuck to it the entire trip, really meant a lot. At least it did to me.

      So I wrote a lengthy response breaking down everything I hate about that episode, but honestly, unless you explicitly want to hear my rant, I don't really see any reason to dig into something you clearly value, so I'll just leave it with "I disagree, a lot, but I value your perspective and I'll leave it at that."

    ST:ENT didn't have to end, not yet. And if it did, the show would've ended with this episode. Archer's speech, which spoke well to Trekies like myself, the founding of the United Federation of Planets, the end of Terra Prime, which could be looked at as Humanity finally defeating their demons before moving on to the beginning of their history's greatest age, T'Pol and Trip realizing the future they can have together after Phlox said that a Human and Vulcan probably really can have a child with both gene types. It would leave everything to our imagination, the fans, and give us hope, also because whatever it is we'd imagine, it'd be something good.

    My country, the United Kingdom, has voted to leave the European Union. While not perfect, the EU has successfully prevented further wars that have historically plagued the continent. To move on as a species, we must recognise that we are all fundamentally the same; we all share similar hopes as well as fears, and by working together we can move forward together. We can learn a great deal from Star Trek.

    • @Heavensrun
      @Heavensrun  8 років тому +17

      There aren't "nations" that only seek to kill, destroy, and dominate. There are people in _charge_ of nations that are that way. There are individual people who are that way, but the vast majority of people in all nations are just trying to survive and take care of their friends and loved ones. We are, as humans, all fundamentally similar. What's more, we are demonstrably _better_ at achieving our goals when we cooperate and work together. Contrary to the popular belief engendered by the 24 hour news machine, we are safer, healthier, and more longer lived than at any point in our history, and we owe all of that to the spirit of reason and open cooperation that shows like Star Trek try to promote. That isn't to say that there aren't threats, dangers, and problems, but we handle those problems better when we work together rather than splitting apart.

    • @Heavensrun
      @Heavensrun  8 років тому +8

      ***** "run by" is the key phrase there. It isn't the nation, it's the leaders. Individuals. You probably share a great deal with most of the populace of those nations, and it's important to keep sight of that. (You are, after all, a human being. I assume.) Of course, none of that has anything to do with the person you were responding to, because he was talking about how Britain withdrawing from the EU was bad, and as far as I am aware, the nations of the EU are not currently enslaving or killing people.

    The BEST Treks aren't those that are easy at their onset. But instead, those that are difficult and filled with hurdles and obstacles. This is what made ENTERPRISE such an EPIC VOYAGE. No. It wasn't the first Star Trek series. But in the mythos, it was the FOUNDATION that everything everything else was based on.
    It should have lasted longer. In my opinion. But, even it's short run is a call back to TOS. Both were ahead of their times and unappreciated. Even if for different reasons.

    There are those who say the last episode of Enterprise was the worst, or that it ruined the series. But I disagree. Instead it shows that those threads that bind, bind not only those present, but it binds us through the generations; from Zefram Cochrane to Johnathan Archer to Christopher Pike, James Kirk, Rachel Garrett, Jean Luc Picard, Benjamin Sisko, Kathryn Janeway and beyond. As long as we strive for greatness, not mediocrity, as long as we keep searching for knowledge and not burying our heads in ignorance, as long as we keep trying to go forward, not live in the past, that’s what’s important. It’s not important whether the final episode implies that all of “Enterprise” was somehow a program running on a holodeck on Enterprise-D. Even if it was, it just shows that Cmdr. Riker and Deanna Troi were doing some historical research (there’s the “searching for knowledge“ bit, again) for whatever reason. 😊
