Omg... I love that you mentioned Cas and her clutterbug system, it has helped me so much - if anyone reading this has not heard of it, I absolutely recommend looking into it. And thank you for not only pronouncing Marie correct, but also not framing the konmari method as a road to minimalist aesthetics or minimalism per se, but for what it is: finding your favourites and having only the best for YOU! I'll quote you from now on about not being a quantity police ❤
I use the back of my closet door for staging my outfits for the next day. I also have a designated area in my closet for outfits of the week then I have come up with a rotation system so that I don't wear the same things every week. It took a long time to train my brain to be organized. I did a deep clean and purged my closet to be able to get it under control. I also change it out by season. Whew it was a job for sure but well worth the effort. Start small areas like accessories, then hand bags, then shoes, boots, coats... If it's out of sight it's out of mind. And I do have 2 closets in order to allow for the 4 seasons. I don't like to overload my closet anymore. Again, if I can't see it I won't use it. It may sound ridiculous but it really works for me. Thanks for all your helpful tips 😊
Yes, to stepstools. I am very short just under 5 feet and I have very high ceilings. I have a folding step ladder in my closet. Cannot live without it.
For clothing that's been worn for a few hours that are not ready to go in the hamper, I hang them up at the front of the closet. On laundry day, if they are still hanging up, then they get washed. Or if they got worn again before laundry day, then they go in the hamper. Works great.
Oh my gosh! I cannot believe I found this channel - I am a 49 year old African American first soprano who loves to organize! Never thought I would see another one of anywhere!! Bingo all the things now 😊
I'm not particularly petite, but I have 9 ft ceilings throughout, including pantry and closets, so step stools are a must, but my favorite less known hack is silicone tipped tongs to grab high items with! I use this for my top cabinets in the kitchen all the time.
Wonderful tips!! The file folding clothes was a game changer for me too! I fold everything that way now so I can easily find it! I even fold my underwear & socks and line them up! So tidy and feels like it saves space! Our closet came with a “system” that isn’t adjustable. No place for my shoes or long hanging and no drawers!! So eventually I hope to replace it. Thanks for sharing these tips!!
Wonderful tips - I already do all of them - but thank you for one thing - thank you for not telling everyone to throw everything away and declutter everything. ❤
2 tips I took from watching your videos is the hangers and folding vertically. My closets look so much neater and I wear shirts I forgot I have and love. I use the drawer organizers because they help keeping items vertical. I also do this with my bras as you mentioned in a video (easier to find the right one). I organize blouses and skirts from light to dark which makes them easier to find.. GREAT tips.😊💜
I redid my closet last year with Elfa and I’m so happy I did. My husband and I also reduced the amount of clothing we had so everything fits in the closet (walk in, 2 walls used). Organizing really makes life easier when you make systems that work for you. And a lot of the tips I got from you, thanks Kay!
Oh how good to have you back in fine form, Kay! You make me giggle every time.....and your helpful tips are so very much appreciated! Thanks for the little Clover share at the end of the video - he is so cute, I really miss having a dog....
Thanks for the tips!! For me the color organizing didn't work because I have a loot of black clothes but my life changed when I started organizing my shirts by: no sleeves, short sleeves and long sleeves... It was amazing to see that my closed stayed organized a lot more because of that, since the reason it was always a mess it was because I was repeatedly taking out the wrong shirts 😂
It's MEEEE!!!! I'm the one that asked about organizing clothing when you fluctuate sizes (or at least I'm one of the people that did.) I wish it was between a size 6 and 8 that I fluctuated, LOL. But I find that I naturally do a lot of what Kay suggests. My tops span a few sizes pretty easily, and my pants tend to veer toward the larger size and I just wear a belt when I need to. Huge fan of stretchy fabrics. But I also have some size specific favorites that live in bins on my closet shelf labeled "fat clothes" and "skinny clothes." I also have some wishful thinking clothes I should probably just donate.
I have reduced my inventory so that putting my clothes away is just as easy as not putting them away. This helps me finish the laundry too- before, squeezing clean clothes into the closet was a pain point. When there’s free space, it’s so much easier physically and mentally. Thanks, so glad to be with you !
Thank you for addressing “step in” closets. People look at me crazy when I say I have 2 step ins in my room and they are so frustrating. I had so much on the side walls that i could barely step in. Now I’m using my vertical space in a smarter way and it’s less stressful
Kay your content is beautiful. Thank for for being accepting of everyone in their own situations without having any amount of the new or attitude. This is a wonderful video ❤❤
Ohh since I was a kid I needed specific hangers for specific clothes. Dark Green for school clothes (I lived in an area with public school uniforms after Columbine) and white for casual clothes. Now all of my hangers are plain plastic white hangers but they all match. I HAVE to recommend the hangers that fold, that hold 5 hangers on one. I have the Wonder Hangers, they work so perfectly in my closets that don't really exist to pack in clothes and I sort them by sleeve length 😊
this was great. I need to go through all my stuff because it won't all fit in my closet, because I have my dresser in there because when it was out, the cats kept taking things out, though an option I just thought of was getting those drawer keep close things for babies and maybe I can take it out of my closet. I do still need to declutter them too though
I've been watching you for years now and I sort of copied how you did your husbands clothes closet. I went and got some elfa and installed it in my 4 foot closet. Holy cow batman, after making the change and sort of copying how you do it, wow. Made my life soooo much easier. Thanks for sharing your tips with us. You bring me Joy, :o)
As always I love your information and that is great! You are so perfect to me. Today I am so different than I was years ago.. work for me now! Is what I need to work toward. I love that thought! Yes step stools, in several rooms are perfect!! I am 5 ft. My Mr. Is 6’3”. No disparity there..
1. Loving the blouse. 2. I know I've mentioned some tales about the wackiness of my house, and now I can add another. The shelf in my closet is warped. It has been warped for as long as I have lived in said house. What even... 3. You had to end with the Nutcracker Suite, didn't you? I know I am craving the return of sweater weather.
I love Marie Kondo, but her spark joy concept didn’t work for me for clothes, especially, because most of my clothes are functional (no joy lol) and the ones that spark joy are cocktail dresses, a few suits, formal wear, etc. So, I ended up with “which ones do I use the most because they look best on me” decision-tree.
Been a hot minute since I've watched one of your videos, loving the transitions and your excellent use of b-roll to really illustrate the points you're speaking on. So satisfying and helpful!
It's so funny how when I actively watch videos on the subject, I'm so much more willing to put the effort in to make my space less cluttered, but when I go on a youtube hiatus, it quickly starts to feel like I was raised in a barn 😂 You're definitely going back in the normal rotation, I'll work on my space while I work through your backlog :D
I learned to ignore size tags. Sizes are inconsistent and vanity driven. I try EVERYTHING on. I buy what fits best and looks best in fabrics that are natural or blends. I have items tailored - it’s worth it. I buy mostly secondhand. I also sew so can custom fit myself and do my own alterations. I purge twice a year and donate to local thrift or resell if it’s in great shape. I take care of my items. I organize by type and color. And step- stools are a must!! 🥰❤👍
The size tag really is stopping people from having a fantastic wardrobe , you are absolutely correct about how different brands actually have vastly different sizes and I agree, try it on. I just bought a bra this weekend, I chose 3 very similar looking ones from the same store and they all fitted differently. I also like to shop second hand 👌😊 but I can't do my own alterations, I only have basic sewing skills 😊, but will happily swop out buttons for something nicer 😊
@@anaalves3658 exactly! Even undergarments don’t fit the same! Been there, regretted a purchase I didn’t try on. 🤦♀😂 Changing buttons can really make a difference also. 👍🥰
Ahh I finally figured out what your closet wallpaper reminds me of - Lily's bedroom wallpaper in Modern Family. Only hers is orangey salmon colored instead of blue!
Loved this soooo much! And your personality is amazing! So excited to dig into more of your videos and I actually started to declutter as you were speaking 🙌🏿
I do a lot of remodeling and painting. I keep those “painting” tshirts, shorts, and leggings in a container. That way I don’t need to have them in my closet but I still use them often.
A little tip for those who can't put the smaller items in shallower drawers. Use the right size organizers for drawers (or whatever boxes that fit) to make a double layer. On the bottom layer put out o season items or rarely used & in the top box, what you use at the moment. Think winter/summer socks, casual/dressy. When you want to access the stuff, it's as easy as lifting a box, or at the end of the season, you swap boxes. Nothing is forgotten, change of season switching is also lot less annoying.
My closet is fortunate enough to have 2 shelves above the tall hanging rod! 🎉 Also, for your folks who can’t be bothered to even put the item you plan to rewear onto a hanger or back in the drawer, get a “rewear basket”. I came up with this a few years ago and it has made my floor-drobe non existent! It works for my ADHD brain and when I realized it had been working for me, I shared it on a local ADHD fb group, and I converted some ladies over there too!
Thanks for tip about having a hook to hang up the "worn but not dirty yet" clothes. I have to change my clothes a few times daily for different activities that require specific clothing and so always end up with clothing in that category, usually just leave on top of the dresser in a pile (which bothers me because it's so untidy looking).
I have trouble with the rolled up stuff in drawers because the items are not the same size so they don't roll in a nice neat row. But maybe I could have another try because the socks are out of control as are the lingerie things...but your other tips I have working pretty well.
I have two rows of socks “rolls”- one for longer and one for shorter with a divider between. When I but them away, I but at the back and I crab them at front so they will worn out pretty similar. Most of my socks are same, so it’s easy to do so. Because the size of the drawers or lingerie type or my personality it doesn’t work for my lingerie but I can live with that.
I bounce between size 8 and 10 seasonally. I usually chunk up a little bit over the winter because I'm not as active. I only keep stuff hanging that actively fits but I store the other size until I need it. It's pretty normal for me because I do a lot of spring and summer sports. I wouldn't recommend donating unless you straight up do not like the outfit or it's too small or big at either of your normal sizes. The difference between an 8 and a 10 on me is like 5 to 7 lbs, so one long vacation difference. 😂
Love this!!! I have been trying to organize and go through what I haven’t worn in a while to get rid of it. For me less is more I just don’t want to take care of it all or store something I never wear. 🙏❤️
Love this! I am a wanna be organized person, but also a classically trained singer/opera singer! I recognized the Diction book immediately by its blue spine. LOL!
@@TheOrganizedSoprano I will be downsizing soon and will need to do 2 closets and figure out storage in a new kitchen and pantry so will be watching for new and past videos.
Too funny about the sheets 😂. Absolutely recommend the file folder / vertical method of placing clothes in drawers & a small step stool in the closet 😊. Game changers
I put the once worn items back in the closet after airing * inside-out * so I can see at a glance that they might need a sniff test or could be added to a laundry load that isn’t full. My closet is 4 feet wide, 4 feet deep, with 10ft ceilings. Thank you for telling me to stop trying to make the side wall storage happen. I have a little area there for hooks and space so I can stand and see myself in the mirror on the other side wall. The main wall has shelves all the way up to the ceiling though, with a step stool and tippy toes I can reach almost everything easily.
I recently watched a video where a couple did their own closet, it was gorgeous and seemed well planned out. At the beginning their closet was shown with one hanging bar going around 3 sides of the large room, and it was full, didn’t look you could hang anything else. After the update there were multiple level hanging bars, with very little vertical space, and bars with built ins just below them. I really wanted to see how they managed to get all the clothes back in the closet, but it closed just showing the empty spaces. It was so well done ,but I’m sure they didn’t take measurements of how much vertical spaces are needed for hanging. So, my advice, go for function, then they pretty.
The "quantity police" really gets me. We are a large family living through 4 seasons of the year in our climate (snow pants, snow boots, swimwear and beach gear etc) and we celebrate all the holidays (Valentine's, St Patrick's Day, Easter etc). Add in recreational and sporting good items; we have so much 😮. Don't forget prepper stuff we've been told to have for emergencies 😕. Where does one put it all?🤷🏻♀️
I have bins in the basement for the out of season stuff (but living in Canada, everything must be readily accessible) For example, outerwear is on rolling racks, with a clear plastic cover. My (now adult) kids favourite bin of mine is "Adventure Gear". I like "rough" traveling, and the clothes and shoes for that go into those bins. Also because I am neurospicy, I HAVE to have all my bins match AND be clear, AND be Labeled with BIG letters. It costs more to do it that way (clear matching bins) but my peace of mind is worth it.
@@astriddeslandes2373 great plan, I find I'm often digging through different storage bins to find things. They aren't clear and they are mismatched and you are right about needing to be easily accessed throughout the year. I find I struggle with that. Thanks for your tips.
I am very 'guilty' of leaving once-worn clothes around on chairs, dressers, doorknobs... I don't know why I never thought to do the sniff test and then just rehang them. Thank you for that suggestion. (Now excuse me while I go take care of some errant clothing 😁)
Any tips for bras and pj’s? (((I have been using my Elfa utility door (pegboard hooks for bras, and large basket for pjs) which works great, but I am thinking of changing the solution to be mostly/all baskets to maximize door space for smaller items like meds/other products/office supplies. Or maybe it could all fit. 🤔)))
Question: At the beginning of the year, I turned my hangers the other way around so that I could track how much of the clothing in my closet I was wearing. It turns out i'm only wearing about ten percent of it. Most of the clothes I wear are leggings, t-shirts and hoodies stored in drawers under my bed. I have some nice clothes in the closet but simply don't wear them... What to do?
It's true about wearing the clothes until it feels smelly and dirty. It will lengthen the life of the fabric. I wear all my clothes until it's stinky or dirty. But not with under wear lol
It also saves water, detergent, and energy! I agree that it is overkill and distracting to try to moniter which clothes have been worn if they still look and smell fine. We all know when something gets gross!
Such a good video with great points! First time I’ve been here and subscribed ❤ I can’t find the link to the closet valet you showed 😭not in your Amazon shop either 🤷🏼♀️ help….!
My closet door is not too sturdy. I had my shoes on the door; instead I use a cart for shoes which I did about two weeks ago, and the door is just hang 👒 and one small purse. As for my closet it resembles a college dorm which is my bedroom feels like a college dorm. Currently I live with family so I have to adapt with the small tight space I have. 💯 I have the same step stool but in purple.
I have two. One for my “cleaning closet” and one for my coat closet. The baskets are great and I have them labeled so the kids know where to put things back. I found the pegboard to be less useful (using to hang attachments for the duster/mop). They were very easy to install by myself. Be sure to measure everything so you know those tall bottles fit or the large/wide containers.
If I'm being honest, they have their own space in another closet. When I had room for a wardrobe, they were in there. They take up a lot of space but giving them their own space has worked for me. My gowns are associated with my work so they and the rest of my concert clothes live in my office closet.
For those who object to step stools/scissors/trash bins strategically placed where you need them, I say - life is too short to waste time on going back & forth so many times a day, precious time we could use to do something we like - whatever creates inconvenience/friction makes us more likely to not do the right thing : "Oh I'll do it later" & the item gets dropped in the first available place at eye level, giving unconscious permission to do that again... again... & suddenly it's a pile, & takes so much more time to sort & put back than it ever did to step on a step stool, put the item back, & walk away. Any functioning organization system has to make it as easy as possible to find, take & put back.
I do not like the step stool that you use. At any age I would recommend a stool with a handlebar on top to give yourself stability. If you are reaching for an item on the top shelf you have to hold onto the item and step down on a step of 2/3. Being a nurse, I always think of safety no matter what your age is. Every time I see a person ready to buy one of those step stools, I always give them advice and they always thank me for my input.
I don't have a closet, I have a large L-shaped wardrobe, and its shelf section is toooo deep. I use that unwanted depth to "bury" rarely used items (even non-clothing ones).
Omg... I love that you mentioned Cas and her clutterbug system, it has helped me so much - if anyone reading this has not heard of it, I absolutely recommend looking into it.

For clothing that's been worn for a few hours that are not ready to go in the hamper, I hang them up at the front of the closet. On laundry day, if they are still hanging up, then they get washed. Or if they got worn again before laundry day, then they go in the hamper. Works great.

You look so pretty in yellow! Been watching your videos for a long time, and I enjoy them all. This was a good one! ❤❤❤
Love this! I am a wanna be organized person, but also a classically trained singer/opera singer! I recognized the Diction book immediately by its blue spine. LOL!
I still reference this book occasionally too! It’s a great resource 😁 French always screws me up lol
I went to the container store and got an elfa closet designed and installed and it was the best investment I ever made.
Woo hoo! So happy to hear that! It's a great gift to your closet!
@@TheOrganizedSoprano I will be downsizing soon and will need to do 2 closets and figure out storage in a new kitchen and pantry so will be watching for new and past videos.
Great idea for I used it once clothes! Thanks Kay!
Too funny about the sheets 😂. Absolutely recommend the file folder / vertical method of placing clothes in drawers & a small step stool in the closet 😊. Game changers
Amazing video. Loved the content and learned so much. Thank you.
What a fun plus helpful video!
SO helpful, thank you Kay!!
Great tips! 😊
Great tips!
@@astriddeslandes2373 I can totally relate!😊
I am very 'guilty' of leaving once-worn clothes around on chairs, dressers, doorknobs...
I don't know why I never thought to do the sniff test and then just rehang them. Thank you for that suggestion. (Now excuse me while I go take care of some errant clothing 😁)
Super helpful information (as always)!!! And loved the clover bit at the end 🥰
Good info
Love love love your videos! Thank you!
Good to see again. Great video too.
I know you love your grays but these yellow blouse look great on you
Omg i have that I wore it once pile. 😂
What to do?
You are adorable! Loved this video 😊
I don't get the file folding tshirts. Hopefully you can demonstrate in one video.
Great video and good ideas! 😊
As an opera singer and home organizer, how often do you reference that organic chemistry text book?
You'd be surprised how many spicy dog walk conversations have me double checking stuff to prove myself right 😂
@@TheOrganizedSoprano 😄
It's true about wearing the clothes until it feels smelly and dirty. It will lengthen the life of the fabric. I wear all my clothes until it's stinky or dirty. But not with under wear lol
It also saves water, detergent, and energy! I agree that it is overkill and distracting to try to moniter which clothes have been worn if they still look and smell fine. We all know when something gets gross!
I need a recomendation for a mini steamer, mine just hit the bucket :( Any suggestions would be lovely !
Such a good video with great points! First time I’ve been here and subscribed ❤ I can’t find the link to the closet valet you showed 😭not in your Amazon shop either 🤷🏼♀️ help….!
Ah! Thanks for the reminder to add that to the description! I've updated it and hopefully that will help! I love that thing, I use it all the time :)
@@TheOrganizedSopranothank you very much!
A minute in … and I love you already!
You're so sweet! Thank you so much for watching!
You are AWESOME
My closet door is not too sturdy. I had my shoes on the door; instead I use a cart for shoes which I did about two weeks ago, and the door is just hang 👒 and one small purse. As for my closet it resembles a college dorm which is my bedroom feels like a college dorm. Currently I live with family so I have to adapt with the small tight space I have. 💯 I have the same step stool but in purple.
One day, I'll buy the Elfa over door rack. I've been eyeing it for a while. Maybe I'll catch the next Elfa sale.
I live in Ashland Kentucky 😊
Question how would you store evening gowns? That seems to be a problem
If I'm being honest, they have their own space in another closet. When I had room for a wardrobe, they were in there. They take up a lot of space but giving them their own space has worked for me. My gowns are associated with my work so they and the rest of my concert clothes live in my office closet.
For those who object to step stools/scissors/trash bins strategically placed where you need them, I say
- life is too short to waste time on going back & forth so many times a day, precious time we could use to do something we like
- whatever creates inconvenience/friction makes us more likely to not do the right thing : "Oh I'll do it later" & the item gets dropped in the first available place at eye level, giving unconscious permission to do that again... again... & suddenly it's a pile, & takes so much more time to sort & put back than it ever did to step on a step stool, put the item back, & walk away. Any functioning organization system has to make it as easy as possible to find, take & put back.
Oh I definitely don't trust myself to know when a garment is smelly. My sense of smell is awful 😅
You are too freaking cute. I love your ideas❤
Because I live in jeans and t shirts, any better clothes are hung by outfit, eg dress, jacket and handbag on the hanger.
Best advise, "Don't overthink it."
Any clothing that I wear out in public goes into the hamper upon my return home.
I don't have a closet, I have a large L-shaped wardrobe, and its shelf section is toooo deep. I use that unwanted depth to "bury" rarely used items (even non-clothing ones).
The Container Store has changed the finish on the hangers...😢😢😢
The nose KNOWS!
