To Tease or Not to Tease? Root Bound Plants

  • For the long term health of our planties, repotting is inevitable. And usually this comes when the plant is pot bound and while it may be tempting to not touch the roots because we are afraid of hurting the plant, it is actual better to loosen the roots out a bit. Especially where the roots have taken the spiraling shape of the pot. We want to untrain the roots to grow in a circle because in a few years, it will become a big knot and the plant can eventually choke itself to death via root rot or just not able to water. Either way, it is best to tease out the roots and loosen the root ball a bit when repotting into a new pot. I hope you found this helpful because I know I have definitely not done this and my plants were not living their best life. Happy Growing!

I’ll loosen some of the roots but I’ve never teased like I see you doing with fork. Guess I’m afraid of breaking roots. As long as it doesn’t hurt your plants, what ever works right? 💚😀
