How One Man's Cattle Empire Became a National Park

- I recently visited the Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site. On its surface, this park preserves the open range era of cattle ranching. The era of cattle drives, cowboys, and unfenced public lands. But, I couldn't help but notice when I was there, that the Grant-Kohrs Ranch also symbolizes something else: the West itself. This ranch is symbolic of Western development as a whole, since the decisions made here, and the power accrued here, had vast implications for how the West came to be... the West. The modern day power structures and influences were born in this era, and you can see it all at the Grant-Kohrs Ranch.

Yessss. This is why I love your channel. Everyone and their mom covers the flagship parks but ignores these hidden gem ones.
There's so many good stories out there! More to come in the future!
If you’re still in Yellowstone area. Think about the Museum of the National Park Ranger, near Norris Geyser Basin. Might be a great story/video.
Ah, hadn't even heard of this! I'll definitely have to check it out next time!
What an amazing story and a wonderful place to have fresh air and feel like you own the universe. What a privilege to see this even on video it would be so wonderful . wonderful place what I would give to live on that ranch
Thanks for watching!
I love these videos about lesser known park units!
I'm so glad! They're some of my favorites!
I like the smaller historical parks. Very cool to see and learn about
I agree!
Love your channel!
I’m doing seasonal work in the Yellowstone area and had never heard of this place!
Will def be checking it out next!
Thanks for sharing!
So glad you enjoyed it and I hope you have a great trip! I think you'll have a great time!
Can you talk about the Chaco Canyon National Parks and the difficulty that has existed in recognizing sacred spaces and how the park expression of reverenc, history, works alongside research & tourism
Many great stories to tell at Chaco - will definitely cover it at some point! Thanks for the suggestion!
Thanks for wrangling up another good story for us
You're very welcome, thanks for watching!
Thanks for doing a very good job on the Grant-Kohrs story. I spent a summer there on the Curator’s staff for a part of my NPS career. Have a good day.
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching!
Thank you for all the amazing content and great videos!!!
Thanks so much for watching!
Dude such a good channel! Been here from day two and still loving it!
That's so wonderful to hear, thanks so much for your support!
Keep up the good work man!
Thanks so much, will do!
I love the video as always!! Is there any chance you can make a video on Acadia National Park and maybe why there’s so few east coast national parks? Or just the greatness and crazy history of Acadia!
And it would further expand Cameron’s previous video on Rockefeller (Teton) and illustrate his role in the development of other park (Acadia, Smoky, etc.)
I'll definitely be covering Acadia at some point! Honestly surprised I haven't talked about it yet, but lots of good stories from there so stay tuned!
@@NationalParkDiaries I live just an hour from Acadia so if you ever need any information or video or anything, just let me know! :)
@@stormeirman4828 I certainly will, thanks!
Thank you! Great content.
Thanks so much!
Fine job on this little known story. Working in the field means certain challenges.
Thanks for watching! I had my problems out there lol, but I'm still happy with how the video turned out. Live and learn!
Love the Seek Discomfort merch!
Love that group!
Thanks!🦬
Thank you!
When I was coming to Montana for University we didnt have really any time to stop anywhere fun along the way.
This was the one place we stopped, and tho we only stayed and talked with a ranger for about 15 minutes and didnt really xplore too too much
Super cool place, and Im very glad that it provided me with my first imprint of how history can be preserved in Montana. Something that I feel is somewhat lacking in the part of the state I find myself in now, as the suburban sprawl grows ever wider and consumes more and more
It was a really cool area and part of the state to explore. I wanted this trip to have more of a historical focus and SW Montana certainly delivered! Glad you could stop here as well and hopefully for longer next time!
Reservations are the worst thing to EVER happen to the National Parks! 😡 They killed the spontinaity and flexibility of the traditional American road trip... You're experience is a case in point.
Great video but please please fix the captions
Surprised to see you in a hotel rather than camping in one of the nearby National Parks...
Oh, we've done our fair share of camping this trip! We were in a hotel the night before our flight
see Blackwell School in Marfa,Texas. as newest add to Us park system. on big ranches and history. see Brite Ranch, and Villias raid there killed postmaster, Possie rode after and kilt dozen Mexicans over border. Rangers cleared out an area/community with one survivor. Big Bend lady with cougar and rode trails and byways here. oh an sumptin bout them lights...
RAD!
Thanks!
Do one on Joshua Tree!!
Heading there later this month! Story coming soon!
Thankyou , realy appreciate the history all of it .
Actualy sad .
I would go and visit , not crowded with a herd of two legged humans
Thanks for watching!
😀
Great video… But I don’t care for empires of any kind
Audio on this video is terrible as well.
All great until you have to mention the Indians in such a way. Give them some dignity, they fought us for 400 years and eventually lost. It’s not poor pitiful them, it’s the way of history.
