Fun fact: when Scott takes his first test drive of the suit he ends up on top of a guys car. The guy in the car is played by Garrett Morris. He was one of the original cast members of Saturday Night Live and he did a sketch where he portrayed Ant Man for the first time in live action.

I love the Ant-man movies, they are just full of heart and personality. I don't need every MCU film to by a dire, world-ending event, so a small-stakes comedy heist film is so refreshing upon every MCU rewatch. It's also just a great film about families--Scott's got his literally family (Cassie, ex-wife, etc.), his Ant family (Hope, Hank), and his convict family (Luis, Dave, etc.). All these groups are awesome and so crucial to Scott's character.

    • @reactswithjax

That's so true! The MCU has been getting pretty intense in phase 2 and it was awesome to be able to sit back and laugh knowing the world wasn't going to end. The family elements were great too. It made the film feel wholesome ❤️

It's a fine movie. Underrated, IMO. The only thing that stops it from being one of my favorites is that the villain was not all that interesting. Just another generic bad guy. Nothing against the actor - he did a fine job. But it's the typical superhero movie problem, which I call the "Bigger, Badder, Bad Guy" syndrome. We saw it in IM1, Hulk, CA:TFA, CA: TWS, and in some of the movies Jax hasn't seen yet. Where the bad guy has the same powers as the good guy, but is even bigger and stronger.

The first few phases were great because, IMO, they tended to be different genres/themes likes a heist, war, scifi, magic, monster, etc. The later phases seemed, again IMO, to be more of a generic "look at these guys" phase aside from a couple of exceptions.

Absolutely no movie spoilers: Reading the comics doesn't really tell us what will happen in the movies, or vice versa. Characters, plots, and themes repeat, but they're often very different. In the comics, Hank Pym was a founding member of the Avengers, along with his wife Janet and later created Ultron. Nick Fury (in the main comics universe) was the head of the Howling Commandos in WWII (the team Cap led in the movies), and took a longevity drug as head of shield. In comic-book WWII, Cap was part of a super team called the Invaders (with his child sidekick Bucky), took on enemies like Strucker, Zemo, and the Red Skull, and even fought alongside Wolverine of the X-men. So the two worlds are distorted reflections of one another, which makes the movies fun and somewhat unpredictable for comics fans, and vice versa. Fun stuff, but a hole with no bottom!

Even now, 7 years and some 20+ movies later, Civil War is one of the most emotionally devastating and difficult movies of the MCU. Basically from the first scene to the last scene there is a reason to have tissues to hand. I'll warn you again next week, but heed my advice. Be prepared to cry.

By the way, yes that was Howard Stark in the opening scene. It gets a little confusing because the Howard character is played by 3 different actors throughout the MCU. This movie's Howard resembles the Howard we saw in Iron Man 2 (in old Stark Expo films)... then there's the Howard played by Dominic Cooper we saw in Captain America: The First Avenger and the Agent Carter TV series... he's generally recognized as younger Howard in his 20s-30s.

Years ago, early 90’s, (I’m now 54 years) at my University in Ohio, I was returning home to my dorm, and I encountered flying ants. I didn’t know about the life cycle of ants. I was a Fine Art student, walking home after Life Drawing class. I had a big paper drawing pad. There was a stone bridge, over a modest ravine, to walk across that part of the campus. I saw, and heard a haze on the bridge. Little things flying! I held my drawing pad in front, and ran through. I found some Ants, with wings, on the pad, after the haze. Wow! Back at my Dorm, a modest size of 80 residents, I quickly wrote a note “don’t go over the bridge -freakin’ flying ants!!!!”

Hey Jax! This is one of my favorite movies in the MCU, I'm glad you enjoyed it. This is in my top 5 for sure! I feel like this was really good because Scott seems a lot more down to Earth and he doesn't really have any superpowers, he's just a regular smart guy. Also for the fact that everything he is doing is for his daughter. Yah you guessed it, you will understand the last post credit scene when you watch Civil War. I could say a couple of things, but I won't as I don't really want to spoil anything. Side note, I think you missed a face punch when Luis punched out that guard. Anyway I hope you have a great weekend and see you next week!

Great reaction Jax like always and with this movie reaction you are officially over with the Phase 2, this is suh a fun movie to watch and if you look closely at some of the set dressing in Hank Pym’s house. You’ll see a little chair or a tiny weapon or other miniature everyday items. There are items placed all around the house that hint at the adventures Pym had when he was Ant-Man and suggest the experiments that he made shrinking inorganic objects before he made the breakthrough to shrinking organic objects. And btw you skip a punch in the face count, before the punch in the face number 7 Michael Peña (Luis) punch that guard that was beeing attacked by the ants at minute 35:00 of the reaction. LOL Keep up with the awsome work. Have a great weekend.

"How can he see that?" in the comics, Falcon has minor super powers where he has an actual pet Falcon named Redwing who he has a telepathic and empathic mental link to, and one of the abilities he has is that he can see through Redwings eyes. For these movies, Sam isn't super powered but instead his abilities are all tech based...and one of them would be a "bird's eye view". Real Falcons can see small prey crawling in grass from miles up in the sky, so Sam's tech would allow him the same luxury.

Some Ant-Man easter eggs. While trying to downplay the truth about Hank Pym's life as Ant-Man, Cross calls these stories "Tales to Astonish" (the name of the comic book Ant-Man debuted in 1962). Kirby is an actual vacuum cleaner brand, but it's also a tribute to comics legend Jack Kirby, co-creator of Hank Pym. This eye-opening scene ends when Scott summons enough force to return to his average height and crashes into a taxi parked outside the hotel. This unsurprisingly confuses and frightens the no-nonsense cab driver inside, played by actor and comedian Garrett Morris, who is credited as (sort of) the first live-action Ant-Man. Scott struggles to recover as two ex- cons share a room at the run-down Milgrom Hotel in downtown San Francisco. The hotel is named after prolific comic artist Al Milgrom, who had a long career as an artist, author, and editor at Marvel Comics.

Great reaction, Jax! As always, I love how much you get into these stories, and your hilarious edits. Cassie is indeed one of the cutest things to be seen in the MCU, and like you, countless fans absolutely loved her presence in this film.
I appreciate how you pointed out the effectiveness of the opening scenes, and how the characters were introduced. As with the first 20 minutes of "WALL-E", this displays some amazing visual storytelling, informing the audience who everyone is and how they relate to each other, but with a minimum of outright verbal exposition. Agreed, it's fun to watch.
Please don't feel bad about finding the after-credits stinger so difficult to understand. That's to be expected because (while avoiding spoilers) it's actually a scene from the middle of a future movie -- kind of like the after-credits scene in "The First Avenger". Even viewers familiar with the relevant story from the comics probably had a hard time figuring out what was going on, just from that one scene. For my part, I mainly just trusted that all would be revealed in time.
And in case you're still wondering: Bucky still has his metal arm in that scene, and it's attached to him just fine. But it's being held in an industrial-strength vise. For which there are very good reasons. Stay tuned.

The Pym story arc, from the comic books:
Henry Pym and his assistant, heiress Janet Van Dyne, began their careers in TALES TO ASTONISH (hence Darren Cross' use of that phrase during the history speech), sharing that title with the Hulk. Half the book was Pym's story, the other half Banner.
This was true of other heroes at the time ---- not quite ready for their own titles, but growing in popularity.
Tales of Suspense featured 1/2 Iron Man, half Cap. Thor was a regular in Journeys into Mystery.
Marvel was transitioning its sci-fi titles to new super-hero stuff. Even Spider-Man didn't start out in his own book. Amazing Fantasy introduced us to Peter Parker.
Hank and Jan started the Avengers. Literally, they sought them out individually to form a team.
Ant-Man fared well in his own half-comic stories, against low-end villains, but in order to keep up with the bigger threats, he began not just to shrink and command ants, but to grow to enormous heights, and dub himself thereafter Giant-Man.
The growth/shrink principles were getting some parent-flak, because Pym and Van Dyne were popping pills and huffing gas to accomplish it, and so the story goes that Hank's powers will still an ongoing experiment, and he ended up stuck for years at ten feet tall, calling himself Goliath.
Sci-babble called cybernetics (Hank's field) explained it, until quantum-babble dealt away with explanations.
During a brief absence of Pym from the Avengers, HAWKEYE briefly ditched the bow and picked up the cybernetic suit necessary to wear the Goliath mantle for a while. Clint was twelve feet tall, and a brawler.
Pym made several appearances with the Avengers over time--- and fairly unique to comic books, he and Janet wore so many costumes in such rapid succession, they set themselves apart, even from Tony Stark, who got the occasional armor upgrade. Janet was a fashion designer, not a scientist. She occasionally helped design the other Avengers' costumes, not Stark.
After one of the prolonged absences, Janet returned to the Avengers, engaged to be married --- to a new super-hero, Yellowjacket, whose powers were much more aligned with hers. He could shrink, fly, and had a pistol blaster. But he was cocky, sarcastic, and mysterious --- a sharp change from Hank.
Spoiler --- During the wedding between YJ and Janet, the Ringmaster and his Circus of Fear (or something silly like that) attacked the Avenger/guests. When things got out of hand, Yellowjacket completely lost his temper, shredding his suit when Janet got injured.
    And he started growing....
Underneath it all was Hank in a new identity.
Later on, there was a STUPID overblown story arc that Hank was beating Janet, his wife, based on ONE PANEL of Hank accidentally backhanding Janet, truly accidentally.
Those were the stupid dark times, and I lost interest in the comics.
Here at last, one of the quirkiest, most important heroes is getting his due.
    Fun Fact Bonus Round:
Stephen Strange is the Sorcerer Supreme.
Cosmically, Hank Pym is the Scientist Supreme.
Smarter than Tony, and the equal of Reed Richards.
(Apparently, using the quantum realm instead of Alice-in-Wonderland pills was a lot harder, and made your brains smart or something.)

Some almost fun facts that no one asked for:
21:07 ants are actually very cleanly; they have to be since they live in such close quarters in their nests. And in a post-covid world, I don't think I need to explain why that's important.
26:12 All the ants in this are actually female. And yes, that includes Anthony. Male wants are generally tiny and spindly. You can see in the jailbreak scene how big Anthony is compared to the worker ants.
34:18 Fire ants do this in nature, they make living rafts during rainy seasons and because of how surface tension works, they trap oxygen and can breathe even if they're fully submerged.

He moved to Hollywood where he focused his efforts on trying to get production companies to make movies and TV shows based on Marvel characters. Fun fact from the comic books--- this movie was gratifying for lovers of comic book canon, because it was Hank Pym who founded the Avengers with Janet, his wife. They were 2/5 of the core Avengers, and got no love from the MCU until this movie.

  • @oxhine
    @oxhine 9 місяців тому

Hey, Jacqueline! "Ant-Man" surprised everybody! Despite Hank Pym being one of the five Founding Avengers in the comics, not even readers were clamoring for a movie version of the tiny hero. MCU fans were intrigued but wary especially after Edgar Wright dropped out as director over creative differences. Finally, everyone just decided to trust in Kevin Feige's grand design and did it ever pay off! The result was a spectacular superhero adventure with just the right mix of action, humor and heart! In the comics, Hank Pym's Ant-Man may have co-founded the Avengers with his partner Janet van Dyne aka Wasp, Iron Man, Thor and Hulk but his history with the team is a troubled one. He never felt his power set measured up to the other heavy hitters, he kept changing his identity with his size, he had difficulty reconciling his passion for pure research with an adventuring lifestyle, he had marital trouble with Wasp, he suffered a mental breakdown and, worst of all, he created Ultron! Tony Stark creates the killer A.I. in the MCU but Ultron is Pym's baby in the comics. Pym is actually happy to pass the mantle to Scott Lang when he comes thieving along in "Marvel Premiere" # 47 which this film is based on. Lang takes to the superhero lifestyle and his relationship with his daughter Cassie is as depicted on-screen. Pym settled into a sort of emeritus position as tactical support and gadgeteer for the West Coast Avengers simply calling himself Dr. Pym which is similar to his function in the movie. Although he and Janet never had a child, he had an illegitimate daughter called Nadia he never knew about until she was an adult which mirrors Hope's estranged relationship with Hank in the film despite Nadia's very different personality in the comics.
Peyton Reed had directed a couple of successful comedies called "Yes Man" with Jim Carrey and "The Break-Up" with Vince Vaughn but had no experience with an effects-heavy blockbuster. You wouldn't know that from the end result which comes across as smooth and polished. In a departure from the New York-centric MCU, the setting shifts to San Francisco showcasing the West Coast city nicely. The script achieves a perfect balance of comedy, sentiment and thrills but also, crucially, gets the audience past any entomophobia it might have by making the hero's ant allies palatable. Differentiating the three species showcased proves to be fascinating and personalizes the little critters. Shrinking as a story gimmick is as old as "Alice in Wonderland" and has been iconically portrayed in films like "The Incredible Shrinking Man", "The Fantastic Voyage" and "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids!" but the size reduction sequences in "Ant-Man" are truly wondrous and imaginative! Scott's first adventure throughout his apartment complex is a memorably dizzying odyssey. A hilariously clever motif is utilized that contrasts titanic insect-size drama with its insignificance when perceived on a human scale. However, it is with the introduction of the Quantum Realm where the film distinguishes itself. Known as the Microverse in the comics, the sub-atomic level of reality is represented as kaleidoscopic geometry and echoing stillness where the rules of normal physics don't apply. The latter is as true in our world as it is in the MCU.

The cast is great led by Paul Rudd as Scott Lang aka Ant-Man whose long list of comedic credits and unassuming good looks make him an affable lead. In yet another remarkable casting coup for Marvel, a post-cancer Michael Douglas was cast as the prickly Dr. Hank Pym, inventor of the Pym Particle and the original Ant-Man who, in the MCU, is a former SHIELD operative prior to becoming a tech magnate. Evangeline Lilly of TV's "Lost" plays his estranged daughter, Hope van Dyne, whose adoption of her mother's maiden name as her surname speaks volumes about family tensions. Corey Stoll brings both pathos and menace to Pym's embittered protege, Darren Cross, whose unstable approximation of the Pym Particle serum fuels the Yellowjacket suit which actually was one of Dr. Pym's monikers in the comics. The supporting cast includes Judy Greer as Scott's ex-wife, Maggie Lang, Abby Ryder Fortson as the adorable Cassie Lang and future Young Avenger Stature, Bobby Cannavale as Cassie's stepfather-to-be, Detective Paxton, and Wood Harris as his partner, Detective Gale. Adding comic relief are Michael Pena as Luis, David Dastmalchian as Kurt and T.I.P. as Dave playing Scott's ex-con buddies with Pena's grapevine monologues making him a stand-out. In the secondary villain role is Martin Donovan as Hydra representative and former SHIELD honcho Mitchell Carson who links the current proceedings with Dr. Pym's SHIELD past in a prologue that features Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter and John Slattery as elder Howard Stark. The digital de-aging done to make Michael Douglas look like his '80's self in that prologue is nothing short of incredible! Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson aka Falcon makes a surprise appearance that puts Scott on the Avengers' radar. In bit parts are Gregg Turkington as Dale the Baskin Robbins manager, Joe Chrest as Frank the skeptical Pym Tech executive, Jean Louisa Kelly as a Pym Tech employee who remarks on the founder's presence in the lobby, Anna Akana as a guerrilla journalist and Garrett Morris of "SNL" as a cab driver.
    TRIVIA:
    1. The Pym residence was the same house used for exterior shots of Halliwell Manor in TV's "Charmed".
    2. The enlarged tank from Hank's keychain was a functional Soviet T-34-85 given as a goodwill gift to the US by Premier Mikhail Gorbachev in 1991.
    3. The rights holders to Thomas the Tank Engine had a number of specific stipulations before permitting use of the character such as not having Thomas run down anyone tied to the tracks!
    EASTER EGGS:
    1. During Scott's escape from prison astride Antony's back, he flits through a trolley briefly alighting on a commuter's newspaper whose headline reads "Who's to blame for Sokovia?" which references the events of "Age of Ultron" and presages the events of "Civil War".
    2. During his presentation, Cross jokes that reports of an ant-sized operative sounded like pulp fiction that would appear in magazines with names like "Tales to Astonish" which is actually the name of the anthology comic Ant-Man's adventures first appeared in before he graduated to his own title.
    3. Scott and Luis share an apartment in the Milgrom Hotel named after comic book artist Al Milgrom.
    4. When guerrilla journalist Anna Akana tells Falcon he has to specify who he's seeking because she has information on people with various abilities including one 'who crawls up the walls', she is making the MCU's first reference to Spider-Man!
    CAMEOS:
    1. Garrett Morris' cameo as the driver of the cab Scott lands on after his first time using the suit is a tribute to Morris' portrayal of Ant-Man on a 1979 "Saturday Night Live" sketch called 'Superhero Party' which was the character's first live-action appearance!
    2. Stan Lee appears as a bartender in Luis' closing grapevine monologue commenting on Anna Akana's good looks.
    END-CREDIT SCENES:
    1. Dr. Pym shows Hope an unfinished upgrade to the Wasp suit he and his wife, Janet, were designing when they were working for SHIELD. He proposes that he and Hope finish the suit together so that she can make use of it which she agrees to enthusiastically.
    2. The second end-credit scene is an excerpt from "Captain America: Civil War" that has Falcon and Cap debating what to do with a captive Bucky.
The next chronological stop in the MCU are Episodes 1-19 of Season 3 of "Agents of SHIELD".
