It is incredible that they charged you a toll for removing an obstruction on their toll booths. If it weren't someone in distress, what needs to happen is that all tow companies refuse to deal with breakdowns on the M6 toll unless they remove charges. I suppose they think that tow companies will pass it onto their customers and whilst I somewhat understand that their likely premise is that drivers are responsible for ensuring their vehicles are in working order prior to using the toll road, it is also as much in the interest of the M6 toll road that recovery vehicles remove obstructions and simultaneously dangerous situations. This is nothing more than utter greed and bureaucratic claptrap in my opinion.
When I saw the van stuck in the booth I was like "you're joking!!". Had that been me I would have kicked right off and said "Well do you want that lane cleared or not?" - Perhaps then they would think twice! I hope Greg makes an official complaint because this is not acceptable.
Love how you treat the danger of motorways with the respect it deserves. Safety is wasted effort up until the moment it's needed, and then it becomes genius thinking.
When you showed the recovery of the Citroen van on the m6, the sound of the traffic flying by really did emphasise how vulnerable anyone is right next to a live lane - even in a recovery bay. Hats off to all you recovery guys 👍👍👍
Can't believe they charged you. When I picked a van up from there few years ago the chap in the toll booth let me through. Had to clear it with the manager which was a mission. 10 min wait. Crazy world Great video 👍
I had the same thing happen 40 years ago in the Tyne Tunnel, got stopped on the way out northbound and had to pay again to go south. Jobsworths, all of them.
Last year we went to Ireland for the first time. Took the car on the ferry and sailed into Dublin. Got off the ferry and headed into Dublin, unsure of which way everything is. Came to the river very quickly and thought, we will go across here and then turn right along the embankment into Dublin. WRONG. This was over the bridge and the road bent left then immediately onto a toll road. Darn it! Got to the toll booth ready to pay happily, and simply said 'I actually didn't mean to go this way. I am trying to get into Dublin'. Without hesitation the chap on the booth said 'welcome to Ireland'. he then told me he would open the barrier, if I just do a quick U-turn and go back through the other way he will get the girl on that booth to let me back though FREE., They did just that. It was called courtesy, common sense and very nice of them. Imagine THAT anywhere in the UK!
Can't believe they actually charged you for clearing a lane that was losing hundreds of pounds for them. Absolutely appalling that. Well done on another safe recovery pet😊
I'm with you with breakdown vehicles being counted as emergency vehicles and as such should not be charged. I wonder what they would do if breakdown companies refused to pay, or refused to recover vehicles?
WELL done I don't know how you kept your cool with the man and his wheel I would have given up after I had the wheel off and they started arguing. It would have been wheel back on and me away. WELL DONE
Fifteen fucking quid!!!!! You're a service vehicle tasked to remove the vehicle HELPING THEM OUT. I'd claim it back as a recovery job from the company that operates M6 toll. I've used it to go to and from manchester many times. If they want to make you pay, I'm going to stop using them out of protest! Bloody cheek!!
You should have told them: "I'm here to clear your lane, if you want your lane cleared, let me in for free, otherwise you can shove it and clear it yourself!"
I used the toll road just once a while ago I try to avoid it as it is so very expensive. But I was behind a lorry at the toll and a few days later my bank account had the fee for a lorry taken out! Luckily for me I had a dash cam so had proof. When I phoned m6 toll I was at first told they could not find my registration on their system. It was only when I told them that I had dash cam footage and told the the date, lane and time that i was in when I paid that they miraculously found my car registration. They then told me sometimes if you follow a lorry through the toll, their systems can incorrectly charge for the vehicle in front! Just a heads up to check you are charged correctly
Doing a recovery on a toll road should be treated as an emergency situation, and therefore no toll should be assessed to the recovery vehicle or company doing the recovery; especially not when its the toll collector calling to have the recovery done in the first place. Otherwise, its like a bank being burgled and the bank sending out to the cops to come help them out, then charging the cops to park their cars near to the bank in the meantime before they can help you out with your problem! Absolutely bonkers!
Probably not allowed to. When I changed tyres on the motorway you only changed the tyre. You can’t risk your life spending time fitting a valve or repairing a tyre at the side of the road. I was changing a tyre on the M6 and there was a guy from another company doing the same as me on the opposite side of the motorway. When I finished I turned around and came back down the motorway in the opposite direction. When I got to where the guy was a truck had crashed into him crushing him to death. It’s a scene I will never forget.

Have seen so many "tourists & private owners" during the years, being completely flummoxed by the offside studs, when stranded somewhere. Pulling in behind as an ever helpful KIWI, in a private vehicle, I often got statements from drivers that no matter how hard they have tried, they cannot remove the wheel ...? To then see me flip around their wheel brace & instantly (and easily) spin those nuts off, with little to no effort at all, to enable them to place the spare wheel over the studs as I spin the nuts on again, by turning the wheelbrace the completely opposite way, to what a normal nut gets spun on as? What the hell - to which I always reply - "righty-tighty, and leftie too" (on a Bedford and any other vehicle with left-side Left-Handed stud/threads). The dawning of reality on their faces is so beautiful, as they realise that the past hour or more, was all "a complete waste of time". I tell them, next time - look at the end of the studs, if they have a big R or L, it means stud/thread type If there is nothing on either the L or R studs, then they are stock RH threads. Left hand threads on the Left hand side, that aren't tightened correctly, never self unwind, as the vehicle moves the stud in a "locking" motion, holding the loose nuts in place. The same goes for the RH side stud threads, as the vehicle's forwards motion keeps those nuts tight too. It is a small and often forgotten thing, to improve safety, but a lot of vehicle manufacturers, don't think safety when it comes to loose wheel nuts.
Guessing their charged you because they missed out on a few hundred quid back hander when the customer turned down the toll's "reccomended" recovery company. Should have just dropped your bed where you were, pushed the VW round and bobbed out the escape lane 🤣
Actually, good point... should've said that you intend to reverse out and access the VW from behind, so they'll need to shut multiple lanes so you can manoeuvre.
All recovery companies should refuse to recover vehicles from the M6 toll, unless they waive the fee, your not using it by choice, they'd soon change their tune if that happened!!

Do you get much back ache? Strap N/S front wheel then lift your deck. Strap the rest once the decks up then your not bending constantly. Also if you park so close to your casualty vehicle (the transit tyre change) don’t ever get between the recovery unit and the casualty vehicle while on a hard shoulder. They charged you!!!! Bastards, now I’d have taken longer and asked them to close lanes either side to create a “safe work zone”
Even Police, Fire and Ambulance have to jump through hoops and paperwork to avoid a charge at the toll. They must fill in a form in advance (how can they if it's an emergency?) Then submit it to the M6Toll for a decision.
That is not correct…at least for the ambulance service. I would assume it’s the same for the others. But in the ambulances there is a M6 toll tag so they do not require any forms in advance. I don’t know if they are exempt from being charged but certainly don’t have to pay on the spot or fill in a form before they have to go through it. The tag allows them to drive straight through and then like with speeding tickets it gets filtered and cancelled.
That van tyre, at 17m35s to 17m55s into the video. Yeah wouldn't just a squirt of that Spray Foam stuff fix that tyre as good as new ?
