    It actually makes sense. Gavin always has the right idea but can't say it. Not hope, but adrenalin would keep you alive.

      @Yal_Rathol 8 років тому +86

      no it wouldn't, because he missed a crucial part of it. before you starve to death, you pass out. so you would never reach the point he's describing, as once your bloodsugars reach too low a point, it doesn't matter how much focus, adrenaline or hope you have, you've run out of gas.
      what gavin is suggesting is you driving a car uphill with a few grams of gas and a prayer. how well would that work?

    Gavin is not necessarily wrong in this, his scenario is just absurd. Having a will to live is arguably the most important tool in a survival situation. If you have just given up and accepted death, no doubt you'll die. However, if you are constantly fighting off death than you will be able to put your body through the hardest and most enduring challenges.

    People actually did an experiment like this with drowning dogs. Apparently, if the dog has hope of rescue, they will go on for longer before giving up and drowning.

    Doesn't your system shut down when close to starvation? I heard people on hunger strike often went blind before death so if you were 30 seconds from dying, chances are you wouldn't have the strength to be able to crawl through the desert or even see the sandwich if someone held it in front of you.

    • @Yal_Rathol
      @Yal_Rathol 7 років тому +3

      RHCP1997 how it works is that the only parts of yourself your body actively considers necessary are your heart, brain and lungs. it will do everything in its power to keep them functional. that's why when you're freezing, your lips and hands turn blue, your body is sacrificing them to feed blood to you brain.
      what this means is that the longer you go without food, the less of your body is actually working, since you're essentially killing less important pieces to keep your brain alive. death is also a fairly nebulous thing, it's not like a video game where you're either livinbor dead, you may seem dead yet still be completely alive and capable of recovery. so "30 seconds until death" could mean nearly anything.
      so, in the situation gavin's describing, you've starved so much that you can't walk and yet somehow haven't run dry on water yet, what would happen is that your body wouldn't be able to eat, because your muscles would be dying as their food was taken and fed to the brain, your stomach would be shrunken and incapable of producing acid or digesting, and you'd be randomly passing out and losing your senses. you wouldn't have the presence of mind to even notice if there was a person in front of you, because your brain takes thousands of calories just to function, and your only conscious thought would probably be regret over your own impending doom and possibly terror of the grave.
      so, uh, no. no you couldn't stave off death with a nibble and i'd suggest you don't try. you need about 20,000 calories for a reason.

    • @RinTrickandTreat
      @RinTrickandTreat 5 років тому +1

      @@Yal_Rathol Uh, what? 20'000 is so so off. The averaging male and female, the body only needs 2'000 calories to survive. The brain itself needs around 600, not 'thousands'.
      And it really depends on the scenario. Someone who has slowly starved for a period of time could get extremely emaciated with muscle wastage and be unable to walk around properly. Someone who has very quickly starved may not look emaciated and have experienced muscle wastage even if their underweight. Starving to death isn't even a real mechanism of death, although it is a cause. When look at how anorexics die, most of them experience sudden cardiac death so while adrenaline/putting a sandwich in front of them won't give them extra time, they may also be able to ambulate normally before the event. The other way is hypoglycemia, in which in the extreme end can cause seizures, put someone in a coma and eventually their heart will just stop. If they're in the coma part then I guess it's true they aren't going to be crawling around.

    Usually at the point of starvation, it's death to disease is what kills you. Your immune system is so damaged it cannot fend off the germs we regularly destroy. But it is possible to still die from organ failure before disease. This is when the organs are shutting down and not working right. The most common fate for one who is starving is a heart attack. If you are on the brink of death you pass out before you die as well. So Gavin actually proposes a good question if he asks- if you are shown a sandwich (or some type of food) 30 seconds before you pass out, will you be able to remain awake? I truly don't know the answer to that, my guess is a yes

    • @Yal_Rathol
      @Yal_Rathol 8 років тому

      no, because you pass out from lack of energy, not some process. it's like asking "if i've got thirty seconds of battery left on my phone, will a prayer extend that to sixty seconds?"

    • @reidwilliams3056
      @reidwilliams3056 8 років тому

      Yal Rathol well i still don't know. Starvation is a big mental thing as well. When you are in that situation depression can hit hard pretty quick, causing you to give up. There's also been cases like Gandhi's hunger strikes where he went incredible lengths without eating, even when he was skinny to begin the strike. The point is that it's more complicated than just a set time like a battery, so if you see food then maybe you can win the mental battle long enough to survive.

    • @Yal_Rathol
      @Yal_Rathol 8 років тому

      ***** the longest gandhi went was 3 weeks, which is right on the edge of safety. on average, the longest your body can go without is the rule of three, 3 minutes without air, 3 days without water, 3 weeks without food.
      so gandhi was on the brink, but hadn't reached starvation level yet. also, he was probably taken care of the whole time by his supporters, meaning he used less energy.
      fighting to survive in a desert, on your own, after the 3 week period? your brain is so low on fuel that it simply can't anymore, and even if it could your body can't handle food in its current state. without medical feeding via IV, you're fucked.
      so yeah, it's less like a battery and more like a car. sure, the car might work with no fuel, but it isn't going anywhere, and what gavin is suggesting is getting a car with a dying battery, a few grams of gas and two deflating tires up a hill without any help but a prayer.

  • @Alphabunsquad
    @Alphabunsquad 6 років тому +1

    For those interested in the logistics of starvation the body eats itself and eventually it eats something vital and you lose its function and that kills you. Seeing a sandwich won’t reverse that problem, and the body will still need some fuel to get itself to the sandwich so it will continue to eat itself even if it knows food is imminent

  • @epicgamingrevolution2935
    @epicgamingrevolution2935 6 років тому +1

    Funny enough they asked a scientist(not sure what field) this same question on a live show and she did say that hypothetically it could keep you alive because the brain is a powerful thing.

  • @IAmNotYourProblem
    @IAmNotYourProblem 6 років тому +1

    Well, when you starve, you don't go from conscious to dead. Your body is forced to shut down partially, and you become is a type of coma, you might wake up here and there, but you'll be asleep. Its your bodies way of slowing down the starvation process. You don't use as many calories when you're asleep, your heart slows down, your breathing slows, and your body temperature drops.so if someone found you starving in a desert, you'd most likely be so out of it you wouldn't be able to eat.

      Yeah it's 100% true and Gavin's idea is how people who are almost staved to death survive. That's what killed a lot of Holocaust survivors, they eat too much and died. The ones that lived eat small amounts at a time.

    if you're 30 seconds from dying of starvation you're unconscious. Starvation victims usually go catatonic before they die because they've run out of fuel to keep going, so this whole scenario wouldn't happen. XD

    So, interestingly, you will stay alive for a little while after the point of no return. At some point your stomach is not able to even digest anything anymore it's so shriveled up and damaged by starvation. That is why people who are starving need to be fed easy to digest things like soups.
    So if someone gave you a sandwich 30 seconds before death, maybe you could struggle on for another hour or so with pure willpower now that you have some hope, but you're still going to die.

    2:59 It's absolutely a stupid hypothetical question Burnie. It shows a clear lack of understanding of basic biology. When you're at that point of starvation your body has already started to consume your vital inner organs for sustenance. There absolutely is a point of no return for solid food, and what Gavin is proposing is well beyond that point.
    It's a stupid funny moment, and should not be taken seriously in ANY way, shape, or form.
