I find it odd that China considers long hair feminine when culturally the Chinese kept their hair long for centuries before western influence. Edit: Yes I know long hair is feminine, but I'm referring to a time when it was considered typical for a man unlike now.

No matter where you go in the world, it seems like there's always this paradox; Tradition is strong enough to stand the test of time by itself but is fragile enough to constantly be threatened unless propped.
Or traditions have stood the test of time because people stood guard over them and took decisions with the interest in protecting those traditions(however they deemed best). Not being Chinese so I don’t know the culture but apparently they dislike effeminate men being a societal model they want men to follow. They see it as something they want to contain before it becomes engrained in their culture like how they see it in Japanese and Korean culture.
Tradition isn't beneficial in of itself. Historically, slavery, genocide, domestic violence, child brides, etc. have all been part of the tradition of many societies. Do you think that they serve the public good just because they existed for thousands of years of recorded history (and likely long before recorded history)? Or does it make sense to evaluate things on their own merits? How are other people, or society in general, harmed by some men being "effeminate?"
@@ENB90 - You think that that's an accurate assessment of Japanese and Korean cultures? Here's a hint: it isn't. I don't accept the premise that supposedly effeminate men are not men. However, looking at Chinese demographics, it doesn't appear as though running out of men ought to be their main concern.
Or running out of desirable men. Population growth must maintain zero sum at minimum. One young person working won’t be able to support 3 old people on government medical for example.
In the face of modern challenges and the complexity of the modern world, much of the world is shifting hard to the right. "Tradition," simple "solutions" etc. are appealing to a lot of people, in addition to scapegoating and bigotry just to try to make oneself feel better. It's not good for any country, or for relations between countries. Countries controlled by "strongmen" will very likely continue to lead them into war and to attack their own people, to show how "strong" they are.
The funny thing is a large chuck of these women love "feminine". Just look at the media and content they produce, look at how they go gaga at idols etc. China is shooting themselves in the foot. If you think these woman are going to go from loving their femboys, to uber masculine men, then your crazy.
An additional factor about these "effeminate" men is that a lot of them, specifically the singers you see on TV, are directly influenced by Korean/Japanese pop culture. Chinese audiences watch these men because they are familiar in the sense that they are Chinese whilst emulating Korean/Japanese pop culture; an example is the show "Idol Producer". Banning them will mean that Chinese audiences will probably turn away from Chinese media and to foreign media such as Korean/Japanese for this sort of content. Considering China's relationship with Korea and Japan I don't know if that's what they want to do lmfao.
Or conversely, perhaps part of the motivation is fear that 'traditional' Chinese culture is being influenced too much? I can't help imagining the CCP leadership as a sort of Chinese-equivalent to the boomer stereotype, ranting about how much better everything was back in their day and trying to ban anything they find new and strange.
I would agree, but the overwhelming majority of the Chinese people only have access to what the CCP allows them to. So while some people will turn more away from CCP media, most won't. I think ultimately it will have the intended outcome of trying to further divide the Chinese people from their neighbors. Which the CCP obviously wants since part of its image as a world power is being aggressive towards it's neighbors.
Korea/Japan are occupied by the U.S., these people have deliberately been sissified to not challenge US hegemony in the region. CIA plot turned Japan, which was once a country of alpha male warriors, into sissy cartoon jerk offs. Sad but true.
I think what this short documentary completely fails to address is that there is no one traditional chinese masculinity, but rather more nuanced roles. Especially in imperial China there were a lot of good associations with idealised more feminine men, who tend to be better educated in the liberal arts such as poetry as opposed to typical military leader type men
Not all true. Warriors in ancient China who were well versed in poetry weren’t regarded as feminine. IT was seen as an attractive trait. “A man that is strong, able to provide for his family/people while also being good in a more subtle thing such as poetry?” Thats attractive
The problem is associating "fighting spirit" as an inately masculine quality. Inner strength is not masculine or feminine, it goes much deeper than that. "Strength" and bravery are not measured by a short haircut, big muscles or beard.
They do, however, certainly help. Look at how much the strongest woman in the world (whom has trained and lifted and built strength her whole life" can lift versus how much the strongest man can lift. It's a biological issue not an opinion or hopeful wishes issue.
But in one way, the sex difference is stark: Men are physically stronger than women, on average. A study in the Journal of Applied Physiology found that men had an average of 26 lbs. (12 kilograms) more skeletal muscle mass than women. Women also exhibited about 40 percent less upper-body strength and 33 percent less lower-body strength, on average, the study found. The researchers found that height and weight differences between men and women could explain only about half of the difference in strength. Researchers reporting in 1993 in the European Journal of Applied Physiology(opens in new tab) found that men's brawn could also be attributed to a larger cross-section in individual muscle fibers. [5 Myths About Women's Bodies] And a 2006 study in the same journal revealed that men had much stronger grips than women - the difference was so big that 90 percent of the women scored lower than 95 percent of the men. The team also looked at highly trained female athletes who excelled at sports requiring a strong grip, such as judo or handball. Though these women did have a stronger grip compared with other women, they still performed worse than 75 percent of the men on this task. In general, men are also faster than women. The fastest woman in the world, Florence Griffith Joyner, ran the 100-meter dash in just 10.49 seconds in 1988, and that record remains unbroken. Yet her fastest time wouldn't have even qualified her for the men's 2016 Olympic competition, which requires competitors to finish the 100-meter sprint in 10.16 seconds or less. www.livescience.com/52998-women-combat-gender-differences.html
The US regressing isn't as bad as China. Unlike China we have (50) States with the people having the right to vote and decide what we want for our people in specific areas. China has a subtle traditional philosophy of governance where leaders do not rigidly enforce every regulation without any room for flexibility. Instead, they leave some gray areas for people or matters that may not align perfectly with the mainstream values of the country to exist. While these regulations may be strict when initially released, they tend to relax significantly after a certain period of time.
Yes we call that authoritarianism. Hardly subtle or unique. Making everything illegal and then selectively prosecuting things to target specific groups and individuals at specific times
it is not intended to be loosely enforced but rather impossible to enforce. the vast geography of china leads to inevitable variation with local rulers often having more power than national leaders. this also leads to corruption as well.

I am Chinese, and I would like to explain from another angle why Chinese people, especially traditional Chinese people, are worried about such things. China is a nation of history and we have great respect for history books. But according to Chinese history books, when men wear women's clothes and behave in an increasingly feminine way, it is a precursor to the imminent collapse of the dynasty. There are plenty of such accounts and arguments in the history books. ““末喜冠男子之冠,桀亡天下。”“男女之别,国之大节,故服物异等,赞币不同”,“遍身女衣者,尽是读书人”,“男穿女衣,亡国之兆”……”"When Muxi crowned a man's crown, Jie died in the world." "The difference between men and women, the country's great festival, so the clothes should be different "All gentelmen in academia are wearing women's clothes! cry !," "Men wearing women's clothes, the omen of the collapse of the country" ......I don't care if this argument is valid or not, but it does have a profound impact on the Chinese psyche. Chatting about it.
I remember about 30 years ago, when I first went to university and came to Beijing, one of the most open-minded city in China at that time, I saw a man dressed a bit like a woman. Several of my classmates from conservative rural provinces commented that if this man had turned up in our area, he would have been disabled by now because everyone would have beaten him up. I was feeling a bit shocked, and while I don't like males who dress like that either, it's not like I would beat them to disability. I mention this to illustrate two points, firstly, there is a fair degree of resistance to the feminisation of males in our nation, and secondly, after all, society is evolving, and now of course traditionalists will still be offended, but wherever they are, at least they won't be beaten up.
Honestly, for myself and most of the older Chinese around me, especially men, we have been complaining about this for a long time. We are afraid of it and we cannot do anything about it. When the CCP decided to take measures to control the situation, everyone was very supportive and said: this is long overdue!

For some strange reason, I agree with both of these 2 arguing points. I understand what the old man is saying...He obviously knows how to deal with life due to his big responsibilities as a male. Because in order for you to be in the military you have to be mentally strong and if you are too girly then you would probably not want to join the military. Basically, that would be another country taking their land and wiping them out as a whole. I totally get his point. The 2nd arguing point was a bit Generation Z LOL. @@kingrobotnik6950 Lmao. I don't think their traumas came from that their parents weren't masculine/feminine. Society needs both insensitive an aggressive people to do some jobs, and sensitive and empathetic people to do other jobs. So every society has this split, that they call right and left. When a country is insecure, when they see enemies everywhere, then they will move to a war footing, which prioritises tough people (women too) and discourages sensitivity. Often politicians will move to a "tough guy" war footing even when there is no threat because it pulls the people behind them in a wave of nationalism. That way, they won't be kicked out of office for their mistakes and dodgy dealings. Rule of thumb: The dodgier the politician, the more likely there will be a push for a "warrior nation".
This is a clever strategy, these politicians did not directly ask boys to go to the army, to have muscles and strength. Because this is not in line with Chinese traditional values, Chinese tradition is that outstanding men may rely on high scores and then become officials. So the invasion of the United States and the invasion of Japanese and Korean culture became a suitable excuse.

I think 'Effeminate' man has always been a part of Chinese culture. Traditionally, on one hand beauty standards towards men were in favor of man with a more 'neutral' look, but on the other hand, men like that were never idolized or admired. The public attitude towards men like that was ambivalent, they want to look like them, but they don't want to get all the sissy-man shaming. What's different nowadays is that with social media, technology, and western culture influence (gender identity, self-expression...), those small portion of people got disproportionate expose on social media and become role models of self-expression, progressiveness, and success (rich celebrity), and teenagers look up to them nowadays. I would like to see more debate on this topic as it touches on so many aspect of our society such as freedom of speech, gender expression, discrimination, social impact, etc...
It really doesn't matter if it was part of their culture hundreds of years ago. First thing, is that culture changes, but you don't like these changes, that's why you see this as bad. Secondly, China went through a program of extermination of their past culture, that ultimately failed to be completed but it did create a new cultural identity in the form of the CCRP. Chinese people nowadays do not care for their past that much, they come from communist revolutionaries, that's their core Identity right now
@@xiiir838 I do agree with the part that you said culture changes, and that's why the young generation in China are surprisingly open to gay culture for example.(though officially it's not legal for gay to get married). Something that has been part of the culture for centuries, suddenly got associated with gender identity and LGBT all that. The West hasn't figured it out yet. It's not surprising to see why China don't want this sub-culture become main stream when you saw all the nonsense happening in the West with woke culture. Secondly, it's undeniable that cultural revolution destroyed lots of historical buildings and families, but Chinese people till this day still celebrate the same festival, eat the same food, and share similar ideas as their ancestors. Claiming that they don't care for their past is just nonsense. A good (the thing itself is bad tho) example would be the unbalanced gender distribution in China because parents wanted boys not girls which it's bad but it was part of the tradition/culture. If their core identity were actually communist, none of that would've happened because gender equality was core to communism. Going back to your first point, culture does change and that's what's happening now, young parents don't follow the old generation and that's not because they are influenced by cultural revolution but rather modern ideas.

Because apparently you're unaware of what social engineering is or what fourth generational warfare is
@@Anonymous-yc9fl oh go then, enlighten me.
@@lordlee6473 Oh gurl please: DO get over yourself....

Especially in imperial China there were a lot of good associations with idealised more feminine men, who tend to be better educated in the liberal arts such as poetry as opposed to typical military leader type men
That's curious. In the west poetry is not exactly associated with a feminine role.
Even the generals get romanticized with being poets and being generally "learned", even if they weren't in reality. Just a completely different view
it's the winners that write history...
Not all true. Warriors in ancient China who were well versed in poetry weren’t regarded as feminine. IT was seen as an attractive trait. “A man that is strong, able to provide for his family/people while also being good in a more subtle thing such as poetry?” Thats attractive
Does that mean Chinese men should be effeminated? no!!
The problem is associating "fighting spirit" as an inately masculine quality. Inner strength is not masculine or feminine, it goes much deeper than that. "Strength" and bravery are not measured by a short haircut, big muscles or beard.
It may be more so linked to how much soy sauce one consumes in a day.
[5 Myths About Women's Bodies]
And a 2006 study in the same journal revealed that men had much stronger grips than women - the difference was so big that 90 percent of the women scored lower than 95 percent of the men.

One can be feminine and still be strong, your mind is the weak one.

It’s strange how he’s so concerned with masculinity being wiped out. The fact that some insecure men are so virulently resistant to the existence of more feminine men PROVES there’s so such thing of “masculine men being wiped out”.
He's talking about needing men to go to war, yet he was a professor of sexology. When I think of a masculine hardened soldier, yup professor of sexology is the first that comes to mind. I guess as a teacher he believe's people are taught to be who they are, meaning he also believe's he had no choice in how 'masculine' he is, because he was taught the traditional way to be a man.

I agree with him. Even though extreme masculinity left world in wreck, extreme femininity will do the same. We need to accept our natural courses, I’m tired and pissed of seeing lost man degrading womanhood
Very good
For some strange reason, I agree with both of these 2 arguing points.
I mean we are so free with ourselves that it's insane. I think that these people are finding themselves and we should support them. I've seen gay people join the military, but I do understand what old man is explaining. I feel like Generation X have so many traumas because I hear so many of them say "Life was tough" or "I wanted to be a better parent than my mom was" so which made this Generation how to express themselves with no apologies. We should accept people for who they are, I feel like there will be extra babies that will probably grow to be masculine.
The problem was never being masculine. Notice how you talked about the people who didn’t want to be like their parents. Clearly that means it was stuff the parents did not the traditional values like men be masculine or women be feminine. One thing I’ve learned in life is, often it’s not what you say, it’s how you say it. This works the same with what you do…
@@kingrobotnik6950 Lmao. I don't think their traumas came from that their parents weren't masculine/feminine. Likely masculine father in family beat their children so badly that children see masculine man stereotype with violence on those they 'love'. They want to oppose their parent's ideas because they don't see violence in people they love as option.
Like, who in right mind as masculine man would say: "I want to grow and have a family and beat my child to bloody submission! I feel like a man!"

This comment is underrated 💯
This is a clever strategy, these politicians did not directly ask boys to go to the army, to have muscles and strength. Because this is not in line with Chinese traditional values, Chinese tradition is that outstanding men may rely on high scores and then become officials. So the invasion of the United States and the invasion of Japanese and Korean culture became a suitable excuse.
That's the problem since none knows what's correct or wrong.

What I want to emphasize is the change brough by new ideas from the west and the impact of technology which gave minority disproportionate voices that ultimately lead to greater impact on the society.
