And they are dumb it is not the same, she didnt do it out of anger or to let her frustration loose she did it to teach him boundaries. I bit my mom once...ONLY ONCE...God love her she bit me back, like the mare kicked the foal - gently...but it was enough for me to get the message! My feelings were so hurt, but I learned a very valuable lesson. Good mom, good mare!

Because, as you don't know, in the horse society, foals are educated by aunts, uncles, older sibling etc... but not by their mother who just feed them. A normal healthy mare would never do this. Piping fence may not be everyone's favorite but it's not dangerous like barbed wire. (and no fence is every 100 percent safe for every horse. Horses are creative in getting injured.) And I've seen confident, well adjusted mares in large group turnout that were more than happy to put a pair of hoofprints on another horse that did not pay proper respect.
I love seeing so many comments that are educationally correcting the belief that what this mare is doing is wrong. This is perfectly normal equine behavior and it's how young horses learn. Horses are not people, they don't think like us. Applying human thoughts and emotions to them does not make logical sense. If she wanted to hurt that baby she could have done damage. The fact that she even had to strike at him, considering how subtle their communications usually are, is telling just how naughty he was being. Very cute video! Momma and babe are both lovely.

To be technical, the foal is "clacking" it's teeth. that's a submissive behavior in foals within herds to say "Im little, please don't hurt me" In this case, it's the closest he can say to "sorry mom" Even then, the mare didn't release pressure until the foal fully settled down. you can tell by her ears.
Only a fool would say poor foal. He kicked her so she kicked him and ended that behaviour. And her kick was limited, not the big boot it could of been. She just taught him to behave.

Horses have interesting personalities. I worked on a dairy in Hamilton City CA, one of my coworkers went up to one of the horses they and pushed its head away as the horse was in the way of our work, the horse looked at Wayne for a second, slowly turned around 180 so that his ass was facing Wayne, lifted his tail, farted in his face, looked over its shoulder, and then slowly walked away. I had a new respect for equestrian intelligence and sarcasm after that incident.

It does mean however that you might not have trained your horse well enough, specifically colts can be a bit hard to deal with though.

My mini mare did the same to her 2 month old filly---the filly kicked at her, and she let fly with a hind foot. Filly was all kinds of sheepish after that. Horses have precise aim. And this mom used such little force that it did not even bump him forward 6". If you play it at .25 speed.. at the 23-24 seconds is where she get's him. And.. it was totally a boo boo to his ego. Cuz he had his ears as back as much as she did.. he squared off to her... she could see him rear up..which horses do to add momentum to hind kicks. Only one foot swept at him..landed just at the bottom of his rump and didn't knock him forward... but did move his one hind leg forward. So gentle.. but she had to do it!
True, plus he was aiming to kick her again at 23 seconds, starting with a small rear. She got in first! I honestly think he objected to her coming so close to 'his' pile of sawdust! Which is why she stood right on it. I've studied wild horses and in a situation with a lead mare, a foal cannot even cross the path in front of her. He is lucky there is no lead mare, only momma! :) In all honesty though a foal this age would spend all day playing with other foals his age and investigating and learning from momma what herbs and grass seeds are good to eat. I've never seen one behave this way in the wild. He wouldn't get possessive over a mound of anything, there would be too many interesting things going on.
Yep, its incredible how precise those rear hooves can be. I found out the hard way. Luckily I was right at the very end of her kick so I only had hoof shaped bruise for 2 weeks. Any closer would have broken my thigh. I was about 12 at the time, never forgot horses can kick 90 degrees to their side. Guess you could say a mare taught me a lesson also. :)

When they're no longer babies, they get their discipline by means of what the herd thinks of them. The worst thing that can happen to them is enduring when the rest of the herd avoids or ignores them.
Great parenting from this horse! I like that she continued to pin her ears and get into position to kick him again until he backed down. She also used just the right amount of force so that she got her point across and took him down a peg without hurting him. It's a good lesson for the foal to have some manners and respect.

I think we all can agree on that. This parent is teaching her baby many valuable lessons: 1. Don't kick momma. 2. This is what happens if you kick another horse--you get kicked back. And shocking, baby still went to momma and said 'I'm sorry', and mom got the point across without ever having to do that again. I have no idea why parenting is lacking today. Parents don't want to be parents, they want to be their kids friends. Guess what? Your kid has friends--you need to be a damn parent to give them structure and guidance. They argue their childhoods were nightmares and never wanted to do that to their kids, and my comment was 'you turned out alright'. Hmmmmm

100% Agree. To add to your comment: keep in mind, we have social media, therapists and SRS to thank for changing old school parenting. Parents can't even yell at their own children anymore without someone crying out child abuse. Parenting today is the result of political correctness running interference. Children are encouraged to tell their teachers, baby sitters and day care staff to inform them if mommy or daddy hits them. Sadly, children at that age cannot fully describe why they were switched or spanked with a belt. The children just tell them that mommy or daddy hits them. It's because of this parents are scared to discipline their children as needed. Instead, parents get taught what I call the "1-2-3" system in which the parents count to 3 before acting on a disciplinary measure. It's passive systems like this that teach kids to be active in their behavior. The roles are switched. Give parents their active role in discipline back and watch the children's behavior become more passive. I was raised on the belt and I'll do the same to my kids (if I have any).
Foals have to learn from mom how to be a horse, and how to engage with other horses. He will know from this experience and others like it what to expect when he behaves a certain way around other horses.

I used to feel guilty when I was as young as 9 YEARS OLD. All because my parents would make threats like that. They would also guilt me because they provided a roof over my head, food, and a bed to sleep in. I always felt so guilty because they would hang it over my head for everything. Made me start looking for a way out as fast as possible, even if that was with horrible older men because at least they would treat me as more of a human being than my parents. You know...it's been 10 years and I still love this video. The momma disciplined basically her toddler in such a quick and understanding method "You kick me I kick you back". This video's old but the reason why tough love is a touchy subject: Because some humans take it too far and end up hurting the kid. (Whipping that leaves marks, isolating the kid from friends bc of a low grade, witholding food bc they didn't do their chores, yelling at them for speaking their mind without actually listening to what the kid has to say etc. ) Tough love is just as important as soft love, but the extremes of both leave terrible effects. No. This horse (boy is a term used for human being, you know, this animal who destroy the horses ?) is probably dead now or he's traumatised hundreds more horses. There's no discipline at all here. Mare is held in poor and stressed conditions. Look at the surroundings : dangerous metal bars, corrals, corrals and corrals. No family. No herd. No horses to actually educate the foal. Because, as you don't know, in the horse society, foals are educated by aunts, uncles, older sibling etc... but not by their mother who just feed them. A normal healthy mare would never do this. A normal horse would actually never be left alone with a stupid human being filming this very sad scene. Go look at the wild herds of mustangs in the Wyoming for a few weeks if you truly want to observe how foals are "educated" and stop your anthropomorphism

Piping fence may not be everyone's favorite but it's not dangerous like barbed wire. (and no fence is every 100 percent safe for every horse. Horses are creative in getting injured.) And I've seen confident, well adjusted mares in large group turnout that were more than happy to put a pair of hoofprints on another horse that did not pay proper respect.

I love seeing so many comments that are educationally correcting the belief that what this mare is doing is wrong. This is perfectly normal equine behavior and it's how young horses learn. Horses are not people, they don't think like us. Applying human thoughts and emotions to them does not make logical sense. If she wanted to hurt that baby she could have done damage. I worked on a dairy in Hamilton City CA, one of my coworkers went up to one of the horses they and pushed its head away as the horse was in the way of our work, the horse looked at Wayne for a second, slowly turned around 180 so that his ass was facing Wayne, lifted his tail, farted in his face, looked over its shoulder, and then slowly walked away. I had a new respect for equestrian intelligence and sarcasm after that incident.
I push my horses head away too if he's in the way of me fastening his rug, he wouldn't dare turn his backside on me. He knows he would get a smack.

Horses have precise aim. And this mom used such little force that it did not even bump him forward 6". If you play it at .25 speed.. at the 23-24 seconds is where she get's him. And.. it was totally a boo boo to his ego. Cuz he had his ears as back as much as she did.. he squared off to her... she could see him rear up..which horses do to add momentum to hind kicks. Only one foot swept at him..landed just at the bottom of his rump and didn't knock him forward... but did move his one hind leg forward. So gentle.. but she had to do it!

True, plus he was aiming to kick her again at 23 seconds, starting with a small rear. She got in first! I honestly think he objected to her coming so close to 'his' pile of sawdust! Which is why she stood right on it. I've studied wild horses and in a situation with a lead mare, a foal cannot even cross the path in front of her. He is lucky there is no lead mare, only momma! :) In all honesty though a foal this age would spend all day playing with other foals his age and investigating and learning from momma what herbs and grass seeds are good to eat. I've never seen one behave this way in the wild. He wouldn't get possessive over a mound of anything, there would be too many interesting things going on.
Yep, its incredible how precise those rear hooves can be. I found out the hard way. Luckily I was right at the very end of her kick so I only had hoof shaped bruise for 2 weeks. Any closer would have broken my thigh. I was about 12 at the time, never forgot horses can kick 90 degrees to their side. Guess you could say a mare taught me a lesson also. :)

I think we all can agree on that. This parent is teaching her baby many valuable lessons: 1. Don't kick momma. 2. This is what happens if you kick another horse--you get kicked back. And shocking, baby still went to momma and said 'I'm sorry', and mom got the point across without ever having to do that again. I have no idea why parenting is lacking today. Parents don't want to be parents, they want to be their kids friends. Guess what? Your kid has friends--you need to be a damn parent to give them structure and guidance. 100% Agree. To add to your comment: keep in mind, we have social media, therapists and SRS to thank for changing old school parenting. Parents can't even yell at their own children anymore without someone crying out child abuse. Parenting today is the result of political correctness running interference.
Children are encouraged to tell their teachers, baby sitters and day care staff to inform them if mommy or daddy hits them. Sadly, children at that age cannot fully describe why they were switched or spanked with a belt. The children just tell them that mommy or daddy hits them. It's because of this parents are scared to discipline their children as needed. Instead, parents get taught what I call the "1-2-3" system in which the parents count to 3 before acting on a disciplinary measure. It's passive systems like this that teach kids to be active in their behavior. The roles are switched. Give parents their active role in discipline back and watch the children's behavior become more passive.

I used to feel guilty when I was as young as 9 YEARS OLD. All because my parents would make threats like that. They would also guilt me because they provided a roof over my head, food, and a bed to sleep in. I always felt so guilty because they would hang it over my head for everything. Made me start looking for a way out as fast as possible, even if that was with horrible older men because at least they would treat me as more of a human being than my parents.
I was of course wrong about that. But my parents were not right either. A child is a parents responsibility, and they should not be using that to guilt their child for living, who cannot even live on their own.

You know...it's been 10 years and I still love this video. The momma disciplined basically her toddler in such a quick and understanding method "You kick me I kick you back". If my 3 year old went up a bit me I'd bite them back. They learn from experiences like that and this colt sure learned quickly.

Because some humans take it too far and end up hurting the kid. (Whipping that leaves marks, isolating the kid from friends bc of a low grade, witholding food bc they didn't do their chores, yelling at them for speaking their mind without actually listening to what the kid has to say etc. )
Tough love is just as important as soft love, but the extremes of both leave terrible effects.
Not to mention, when someone is mentally unstable or prone to collapse under stress, hitting or screaming at your kid tends to be one *very unhealthy* way to let off steam.
A balance has to be done. You don't get coddled in life but you also don't get hit _everytime_ you make a mistake.

yea. I had a long life story about my mother but. I deleted it all. Even if I pleaded with her to stop she still came at me. I guess saying "mom for the love of god please stop you are making this so much worse" is my mom for "kick my ass you backwards bitch." If anyone is suffering from this, please know... It hurts you way more than it hurts them. Please, for the love of all that is good, remove yourself from that situation as soon as you can. Anything is better than having to deal with someone you are supposed to love and trust for years and years... I shouldn't say that actually. Don't put yourself in an even worse situation just because you hate your parents. But I honestly don't know which is a worse hell... Because i didn't have the fucking guts to hit that woman back. I want to think it was because I love her too much but... I'm afraid that maybe I was fearing a lawsuit more. Because while i would never have the authorities involved with her, she seemed all too eager to have the cops take me away on multiple occasions. Even when I had the perfect chance to, I declined. The foal learned quickly too. After the kick he stayed away from Mum's hind legs and listened when she told him to back off. Probably the best way to teach a lesson to any child, quick, sharp, and to the point.

Hebrews 12:6-9 is not talking about God punishing His children. If we read Hebrews 12:6-9 and substitute punishment for discipline, it makes little sense in the context. Plus it undercuts the argument in chapters 9-10 about the perfect sacrifice of Christ. Is training painful? Sometimes it is. Read Hebrews 11:33-38. Sounds painful. Suffering is painful. And God is using that pain for good. Consider how pain works in training. The ballerina trains. There are plenty of sore muscles and gritting it out in practice that are part of training for a recital or a show. Yes, there is pain in training. Do we have to cause pain to train our children. The answer is no. There is no intimation that God causes His children pain in order to train them. Hebrews 12:6-9 does not actually teach us that we need to cause our children physical, emotional or verbal pain in order to train them. However, pain will still come into our kids’ lives. We should use those sometimes painful circumstances in our child’s life to help teach and train them. Also, when it comes to Biblical parenting, just because we are not seeking to cause pain, does not actually mean that our children will not experience our training as painful. The word “grevious” in Hebrews 12:11 has the Greek term “lupé”, which means sorrow or grief, not physical pain.
The “rod” is NOT talking about spanking children. The rod is not a spoon, a shoe, a hairbrush, a paddle, a cane, a kitchen spatula, a tree branch, or any other item that is used to hit people. That horse doesn't give a damn til you show them you're a leader or they will pin their ears and swing their butt or maybe even bite. The OP is not saying beat the horse with a chain, but if a horse does something aggressive ( like kick you as if you were a lower ranking horse) you better get up on them and fast or that horse and the nearby heard watching is gonna learn, and then all the horses are pinning their ears at you. A horse will never kick a higher horse in charge cause it has been kicked back, and had its feet moved and its drive line cut off, the lead horse will make lower horses uncomfortable with pressure to push the idea of "you dont do that to me EVER". I 100% grantee the horse wanted the grain and tried to kick her to move her like a lower horse. I'm glad she gave a kick back and left it there some people want to whip the horse and run it in the round pen for 6 hours just give a quick correction and be done with it.
