- E60 BMW M5 V10 review by The Straight Pipes. The 2006 BMW M5 V10 is putting down 500 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque from a 5L V10. At $25,000 CAD, would you take it over the Mercedes E55 AMG, Mercedes E63 AMG, Audi S6 V10?

you are making me miss my E63 M6
The best era of cars, where we had hatchbacks with V6/VR6 engines, BMW with V8 and V10, Audi with iconic 5cyl, V6 supercharged, V8, V10, V12, even turbo charged. Had no idea what to expect next, good times.
Great video!
I've owned every M5 from the E39 to the F90 and I've only kept the E60 since moving to Lamborghini because once you feel that EPIC V10 it's very difficult to have anything else. I also have an M6 GC as a runaround which on paper is a "better" car in every way but it's souless compared to the E60. I've also driven the E34 and E28 M5s too and as great as they are, don't really do much for me if I'm honest.
I also think the E60 has a disadvantage here because for some insane reason you could never have an upgraded exhaust from factory and these cars NEED one. I myself have a custom built one from Akrapovic (they never made one for the E60 M5), Eventuri carbon intakes and plenum and it just sounds unreal, another league compared with even my Huracan if I'm honest. I also LOVE the SMG but for the 1st year or so I didn't then something just clicked. You have to truly learn that gearbox and once you do, it's beyond rewarding.
Have owned it for 8 years from BMW Park Lane and put nearly 60K miles on it and still has the BMW warranty. Reliability-wise it has been phenomenal for what is essentially a 4 door supercar (not super saloon like the others). Regardless it's not a factor for me, from purely as
I really don't care where these guys place the E60, being a multi-owner of M5s and put 10s of thousands of miles on them there's absolutely no contest the E60 M5 is not only the greatest M5 ever made but the best sports/super saloon ever made and it's not even close.
As Jeremy Clarkson said a few weeks after driving the Ferrari F430 "It's the best car I've ever driven".
A true legend.
you preferred the e60 over the e39?
@presdentbarkobamna7871 Only by a little. I had both at the same time at one point and whenever I wanted to go out in one I'd almost never pick the E39 over the E60, the V10 would sway it every time if I'm honest but I still love the E39.
I remember when these came out. V10s were making their way into the market. Gallardo, Audi S8, and M5/M6, all around the same time. Oh yeah, Porsche and Lexus dipped their toes as well. That V10 sound was so distinctive from the BMW and of course that LFA.
V8s and V10s are my favorite type of engines, especially the 10 used in the Dodge Viper, LFA, Carrera GT, and this M5 generation.
I still remember the TopGear episode, where Jeremy called it Ugly, but I always thought it looked good, much better in person too! F90 is still the best IMO
Nah it's ugly
Its not ugly, its just a difficult follow up to a very pretty E39
I also remember when he was a total boomer and couldn’t turn off the navigation 🤣
"...so they festooned it with a chin spoiler..." Jeremy Clarkson.
2 words: Straight Pipe.💪
Kinda mixed about that. I like the V10 to sound smooth rather than rapsy
@ I feel that, I’d try hard to stay out of the pedal smashing. “try”
I think Jacob took a glimpse for a check engine everytime he floored it 😂 Love that car, legendary
It's not a check engine light, it's a feature.
@@TheStraightPipes Authentic 👌
Im simple man, see M E60, I click!
Can't believe how much $ I dumped into that S85...so addictive and perfect noises. Don't ever use launch control!!! SMG3 is not your friend.
Haha I knew not to use launch control even though it’s BMW’s museum car. I have some mechanical sympathy
All of the pumps and actuators and windows xp derived programming are barely holding on, but it's such a great driving experience. Great vid fellas.
had to get at least one BMW "there's a problem" warning bong in there
We’ve gone backwards. The 2000’s was an incredible time for cars we just didn’t realise things were going to get worse not better.
This looks beautiful especially for its age.. and V10!! I'd take this over the yellow one you guys tested on the Autobahn
I don't need one. I don't need one. I don't need one
You dont
If you can find a manual one get that. I used to have a SMG M6 and I loved that car.
@@TheStraightPipes hard disagree. He needs one. As a fellow Yellow Z06 owner I must enable him.
Prove it
I need one
Had the pleasure of seat time in one these around Road America a couple of times. Active bolsters worked really well and that sound is glorious.
Just that raw at the beginning 🔥🔥🔥🔥 it hits different
I know a couple mechanics who own one, it helps a lot if you can work on it yourself. Great car !
An amazing, yet unreliable engine. BMW knew this upon its release but understood enthusiasts would pine for this M5. Could have been a true legend and worth 2-3 times more
This is a Great Car!!! Period!!! With a straight piped exhaust system, I wouldn't even dream of looking at the E39 M5, given how exotic this one sounds with its F1 Roots.
Great video. I have driven both transmissions on this car and prefer the manual. I was lucky enough to make a video with an Interlagos Blue M6 with a manual transmission earlier this year. Sounded amazing
appreciate this made my 2 hour lecture more better 🙏
It feels gooey when you shift without getting off the gas. The only way to explain it. Dont buy one....unless you get qtp cutouts and an exhaust...and twin k&n's...dammit i miss my trainwreck sometimes.
this is real bmw
Thankfully it is possible to build a reliable S85 these days.
Replace the rod bearings, oil pumps, throttle actuators with upgraded aftermarket parts that makes it much more durable and fixes a lot of issues with the oem parts
If you have the money, you can swap the problematic SMG trans with a DCT.
I had one of these. Loved it, but i had more flat tire and transmission problems than i can count
This review's gonna blow up.
The review I’ve waited ages for, love the car and the content!!
I currently own an '09 manual and an '08 SMG. Some observations: (1) SMG should never be driven in "D"/Auto mode, you will wear out the clutch in no time (2) Drive the SMG in manual mode in the highest shift setting as if you are starting to drive a manual...slow throttle application when starting off/rolling slowly (3) the manual is great for control, but is geared waaaay too long for US roads and the shifter itself is typical BMW slop. They are two completely different experiences, but between the two the SMG just feels more exotic than the manual.
Great engine and a fine handling super saloon. But from an owner's perspective, the 211 E55 Kompressor is a much more solid bet. Mine is a 2004 and its tuned to around 570 bhp, it will take any abuse without issue, the engine is very simple, robust yet immensely tuneable/ powerful, the 5G box is also super solid and with a tuned TCU shifts much faster/ sharper without the annoying jerks of the BMW SMG.
I inherited the family 2007 BMW 530i and it was simultaneously one of the best driving vehicles I've driven while also being easily the most unreliable, and that's with likely the most reliable powertrain available from them at the time (n/a 3.0l L6 255hp). That thing was very well taken care of and still left me on the side of the road more than any other car combined. The transmission was slipping by the time I sold it to some hood looking dudes from Houston for $4200. The next day the guy sent me a screenshot of the gauges doing 110mph in it the next day 🤦
My favorite M5 Generation, even if it does have a bad reputation when it comes to reliability, especially the rod barring issues. But that glorious V10 engine sounds nice.
After the clonky clonk 8:52 when the chime went off I was like 👀
Its true , do require alot of maintenance but they are very special , i bought an engine and it came with an chassis
never clicked so fast
Now I don’t know about early BMW’s but the e39 m5 did have EDC it was an option. My 03 540i has edc as well. As far as I know edc came out in the 90’s on the e38 7 series.
E63 m6 owner, love every minute i have driving it because every minute is another day in the shop. Still love it, though
I may not like the appearance of this car, but I have to admit the S85 sounds awesome and the interior is damn neat peak BMW. Only interior I like is from the F generation chassis
I feel like this was at the peak of the NA (Naturally aspirated) cars. Yes yes today turbos are extremely impressive. But the sound and feel of these NA engines were amazing.
You forgot to mention coils, as far as the List of problems. I’ve owned one of these, 2008 when with a manual transmission. It was phenomenal when it ran, but it had problems, all kinds of problems frequently and often. I own the car for about six years, and I am embarrassed to put in writing how much money I spent on keeping it perfect. Suspension, honestly, never felt right manual transmission was a bit off for sure. By. VAG V10 standards, the engine was a little lazy to rev to the red line. But the crescendo about 5000 RPM was definitely worth it.
It may bankrupt you in maintenance costs, but that V10 sound, omg.
Love it more now. Thank you guys
I was thinking about this car yesterday 😂
We love this for you guys 😍😍😍
Damn Jakub! Were you even old enough to drive in that first video? 😂 I'd love to see a video with the lore of TheStraightPipes...how it all started, how you 2 met, how you first got folks to lend you their cars, and how you were able to start getting the top notch cars from the manufacturers.
I couldn’t believe it when they agreed to let me borrow that M5 for a few hours. If you watch all the videos chronologically from the beginning (I don’t expect that) it explains pretty good lol. We’ve been friends since high school year 2000
You guys didnt engaged the fast aggressive shift mode. traction fully off, manual mode, gives you the magic 6 bar shift speed mode. Transform the car shifting experience!
The look of that car is so much better than modern BMW’s.
Best ever bmw engine hands down
E60 is my favorite civilian car, but I can't say without a doubt that I'd want an M5
The factory launch control should be at 3,500 rpm. I’ve seen tunes push it a little higher but 7k sounds off unless you personally did it yourself. You can upgrade rod bearings before they fail. You don’t need to wait for the engine to fail.
Also, the car can dump the clutch for a burnout mode launch. It stays around 1k rpm until you release the brake and then it’ll spike the rpm to redline for a burnout launch
I saw a 2014 6 speed M6 for sale recently. Black on black car but it has a green wrap. $27k USD. Intriguing but terrifying
The mighty and award winning S85 remains the only V10 built by Bimmer, and it also powered the E63 M6. It's such a rarity as Bimmer never built a successor to the S85.
As an old e39 owner, I remember just how unreliable the e60 v10’s were. Everyone unloaded them before the warranty ended due to all the issues.
So many people hate the SMG! If you drive it like a manual (lift before shift) it is absolutely fine..
Sreten is definitely watching this video
I will still buy one regardless of the reliability. I’m sure it’ll last a short time due testing the limits but it’ll be fun
That gearbox reminds me of the W205 C-Class 🥲
Your videos are always full of creativity and style. Thank you for your skill.😈🎈🐬
Them not wanting launch it tells me all i want to know about the reliability and maintenence.
Tq is reduced just like a auto between shifts, you can stay WOT thru the shift without an issue, that is how it is designed
Best bemer ever 🎉🎉🎉
Last time I was this early…. I didn’t get a second date 😂🤷
2 minutes ago.. 😂
Dont let off the Gas during Shifts!!!! All it does it confuses the smg Unit.
You should try the E63 2010-2011.
I believe the V10 is derived from the famous V2 that's in the F1 Mclaren.
engine go boom. Still my dream car tho haha
Nah this shape has aged so well
I was 18 years old and walked on to a Porsche dealership. Sitting out front was a black E60 and a silver CLK63 AMG Black Series. An awesome older salesman for Porsche came out and offered to go for a drive, no questions asked. I was giddy. Let me drive, and had me take a hairpin exit ramp doing 90. He said “don’t lift”. Was an absolute blast and what an experience. Later showed me the newest, at the time, 991 911, and a white 458 Italia in the showroom. Will always remember that day, and that E60!
1 of the forbidden fruit of cars
I miss when BMW was BMW.
I refuse to believe that a 5 liter V10 needed less air to cool down (“small” grill) than a 4.4 V8 or a 3.0 V6.
Buy it Immediately !!!!
i swear i heard do re mi fa so in the beginning of the video🤣
Could be nice to have the price from the time this car was sold !!
Museum Piece with a headlight disfunction lmao.
The only car I’ve ever heard that was truly ear piercing- granted it wasn’t stock
I would have a more subtle exhaust, or valved.
Back when there was no replacement for displacement.
legendary
Review an AP1 S2000 so you can make a shirt. You can use mine.
For me as a German it is so weird to see you drive threw a German neighborhood 😂
Surely they have a wagon to lend
They had one which we filmed static shots but couldn’t drive it
The 2025 BMW M5 Touring is Finally Coming to America
Should’ve got a manual version or the convertible M6 in a manual
This is from the bmw museum
@@TheStraightPipeswell, I meant in an ideal situation. I had a DCT E90 M3. The manual with the N/A and the long gears is undefeated 🤝🏻
Is the car your test driving an original exhaust? I don’t remember it sounding that loud plus I’m gonna get hated on this. I prefer a quiet exhaust then loud.. for me original exhaust always sounds the best on any car, aftermarket is so loud and annoying!
Legend
S85 V10❤
The best all round car of all time (sedan + legendary engine) except reliability sadly
I love you two but that’s shirts are just BAD. Make them face horizontally.
Oh this isn't Jacobs new project car?
The manual version is scary 😭
Still waiting my vette tshirt guys
is it possible to make this v 10 reliable does someone have correction kits non plastic parts and good vvt(vanos) and better clearanced parts
Your videos always bring so much laughter and good cheer! Thank you for your talented and quality work!🏝😀🏅
My brain can't comprehend the sound of a V10 R8 in a BMW luxury saloon 🤯 I think with some nice wheels, decent exhaust, coilovers & an 8HP ZF transmission swap if possible would be 👌
Wait til you see a RS6 with the V10
@@axshunjaxon4561aren't those turbo charged tho? If so they'd sound muffled i think
@@Tsatsi_MvalaThey're very muffled.
Sounds nothing like a r8😂
8HP ZF is a pretty popular swap nowadays. There's a company in Australia, they've fitted it to all sorts of vehicles, LandCruisers, Nissan Patrols, Toyota Supra, even 1100hp Skyline GT-R s. They're plentiful also, I've seen a E46 M3 with this V10 swap paired with the E92 M3 DCT 7 speed. There's video of that car on the autobahn, it's amazing
"Financially bad decision"
yeah but, v10 sounds tho👀🤷♂️
if it would have had xdrive it would do 3.5 to 100!
Sounds good and godly V10 but the unholy looks.. 😅
E39❤
You buy one to experience and then sell on ASAP, you only have to give an M5 a funny look and it'll break in protest. Get back in a Lexus F car or LC500
Canada is always out of touch with prices it’s laughable
Blame Trudeau for killing our economy
Should have kept our old Canadian Tire money. Probably worth more than our dollar now
@ 😅
YOU NAILED IT!!! Old weird BMW..its to be expected..so funny..NOW there just new wierd bmw s now and its to be expected..so funny that how scared you guys are to drive a "old" BMW ...haha its not old it just aged really bad just like all the rest...maybe the 2024 M4 is ok butt time will tell
We’re only scared of breaking it
@TheStraightPipes that's fair I would be too
