If the HL1 flashlight in a dark hospital wasn't terrible enough, my first experience playing AoM as a young teenager was on a monitor that came default with a "screen-saving" setting that would automatically fade the screen to black if over 80% of it was dark. Not only did I have to deal with the horrible flashlight, I had to constantly shine it at the floor to keep my monitor from turning off, and if I ran out of batteries in the dark I was completely blind lmao. Still fun as all hell though

@@lolitaras22 Me too, for some fucking reason it had 'fake HDR' or whatever, so when it was dark on screen it would get like 50% more dark, and when it was bright it would get brighter. What fucking creature ever thought that was a good idea.. who tested that monitor and said 'yep looks good!' it would get so dark you couldn't see anything, many games I had to crank up gamma/brightness and ruin the atmosphere a bit..

Actually the 3 endings feel a lot like they are meant to be part of the same sequence (assuming Ritcher hasn't skimmed on any other details):
    1) David comes back to his senses and is arrested for the murders he commited
    2) David is interrogated for what he did
    3) David is sentenced to jail for life and makes it into the headlines (notice how the picture in the newspaper is a screenshot from ending #1) until he hangs himself to death
Ultimately a very logical conclusion to the game, seems like to give the illusion of multiple choices the creator just wrote a single ending and split pieces of it through many routes lol

For a time of old horror where obnoxious jumpscares was common place, the AoE jumpscares are very meticulously put together and that's what I commend it the most for. They're so well made that you'd genuinely feel like you're hallucinating, cus you wouldn't know if some weird face on window was actually in game or just your imagination, it just pops in and out in complete silence and leaves you questioning its existence. My favorite jumpscare is one that manages to burn the shape of face into your retina, by using some trick with contrasting lighting, making you see it whenever you blinked or looked into darkness of your room. You never see other games have a scare this creative. Hell, even the loud obnoxious ones pop up while you're actively fighting enemies, making you freak out and waste ammo on nothing in moment of adrenaline. Game truly makes you feel like you're going insane.

The surreal experience of the levels, the delicious choice of weapons, and the dark and lonely story really opened my eyes to more horror games as I grew older. I can't thank Rumpel enough for helping create such a memorable moment from my childhood
Also, this game was my first introduction to Aphex Twin, and that "boring intro" was a fucking perfect blend of visuals and music to really set the tone of unease that was yet to come. Really thankful to the mod for introducing me to music like that

I always liked the Spike and Barley videos for this game, and the concept was a novel idea at the time. They took a simple co-op let's play of the game, and added a curated haunted house element to it with Coccyx acting as David Leatherhoff. I miss them. Barley seems to be doing okay these days, but I think Spike needs a show of love and support, judging from what I've seen his tweets.

My first experience with this game was actually way back probably during 2010 or 2011 in Sven Coop. Someone named Cocyx ran a cooperative Afraid of Monsters Director's Cut server. What made it so fun was that the admin would occasionally join in as "David Leatherhoff," who would then proceed to do things such as:
    - Manipulating objects in the levels to block or hinder players, or alternatively mess with their heads
    - Outright walking towards players with a knife/firearms and killing them (players in Sven Coop at the time were resistant to friendly fire)
    - Watching players from a distance or from inaccessible areas such as behind windows or fences, especially early on in the game
    - Teleporting players into cages or out of the way areas to mess around with them
    - Changing the player's camera to David's perspective, revealing that they're being watched from above with just enough time to spin around when they gain control of their view back to see David watching over them with a rifle or something of the sort
I did manage to eventually play the original, but the server that hosted the game itself was very fun. The twitchers unironically freaked me the hell out.

Maybe the idea of the addiction boss fight is that using your normal weapons are ways to help your addiction that instead hurt you since fighting an addiction is a long and painful process, but finding the spear is, after all the time and pain, finding the thing that works to help you fight your addiction the most without hurting yourself along the way.

Afraid of monsters is a game I have an unhealthy obsession with, I just love everything about it.
I don't think there are many games like it, where the game respects the player's time AND intelligence by not trampling them with lore dumps. Just a solid gameplay base with great horror environments.
Most games just inconvenience the player in order to make it more scary or whatever but AoM is as fast as you want it to be without ruining the scary mood of the game, just you and your thoughts.
And I have to thank Spike and barley (ft. Cockyx) for it. I watched it religiously and tune in every now and then. Heck, I was even recreating the entire AoM campaign in Left 4 Dead 2.

I'm unreasonably excited that you brought up Spike and Barley, AOM was one of those things I played an unreasonable amount of times over multiple nights on Sven Co-op with friends growing up, and a surprising amount of bonding between my sister and I happened in part due to Spike and Barley's shenanigans in their playthrough. (Legit she and I go LIL OL' MAN at each other like psychopaths every now and then out of neutral.)
Super cool to see some love thrown at AoM, especially since it does tend to get overshadowed by its admittedly more technically competent successor.

I share your same passion for AOM. The amount of dreams I've had about this game during my childhood is actually nuts and it's been such an inspiration to me. I still hold on to many of the dreams to this day, and I've been planning on making a map pack at some point based on the locations I saw in those dreams. Something about this game is just dream fuel, it's so surreal.
How Andreas could make an entire horror mod that's actually scary, on top of having multiple branching paths, all when he was just 16 is just insane.
Also, imagine how cool this game would be with truly randomized enemy spawns. The game already has different spawns for each ending path, but those are all easily memorized if you play through a bunch. I know something like this already exists for half life, I hope it's possible for AOMDC because it would be a PERFECT fit.

I'm not a huge fan of the game nor do I dislike it, but the soundtrack department is still one of the best mysteries of OSTs in my time. The original AoM-intro theme is still unknown by every person that has been looking for it. The bassline resembles Solar Fields' Confusion Illusion but it's confirmed to not be that track. The search continues.

    Fun fact:
I grew up in Sweden at the time when this was made, and the horror themes behind it are grounded in very true things that happened. At this time, eugenics had only been reformed and most doctors had still been taught that it works and that it was a legitimate science. On top of that, they still practiced coerced sterilisation of LGBT people.
Anyways, long story short: Most academics and doctors at this time had some incredibly fucked up views about mentally ill people. There was this idea that good and evil didn't exist, and that all crimes and bad things could be traced back to people who had some kind of condition or disability (I only exist because my mother asked for a second opinion). A lot of doctors would perform illegal/coerced abortions under false pretences if they suspected an infant was going to have a disability, and abuse towards mentally ill people was super common (and to be fair, still is, nobody's done anything about it).
The reason I know about this is because it happened to me, and I was in fact given medication that they said were a bunch of harmless SSRIs... but then I showed them to a real doctor from a different country (admittedly an American doctor, so like, good education, shitty ethics. But still a step up). Truth is, they were extremely powerful antipsychotic meds, and without a legitimate condition that requires such medication, you're going to get brain damage. Ever since then I've heard voices in my head because of how the pills really messed me up over the course of several months.
So, yeah, based on a true story. A lot of people experienced these kinds of abuses by the Swedish government.
Also to you Americans out there:
I get that you want public healthcare, and I respect that. But kindly shut up about the Nordic system, when you praise it, you're just parroting government propaganda. Look into French or Spanish hospitals. They're far less pseudoscientific and respect people's rights.
