Sony 27fs12 RGB mod

- Ive finally decided to add RGB to my sony trinitron that has component already. I've been putting it off for fear of damaging the set with a lack of knowledge but its been a few years and I've had some practice and it's finally time.
I had some requests to see comparisons of n64 with S/video and composite and i modded my n64 to output RGB so i thought that this would be a good place to highlight the differences.
The jump from composite to S/video is pretty noticeable but Im still working out the best way to record my CRTs so S/video to RGB difference is difficult to see on the video its mostly color shadows and highlight differences in person. Hope you enjoy the video!
Special thanks to rocketeng for helping me trouble shoot a hiccup during install.

The moment you came into frame with a tie-dye shirt, I knew this was the right place to be.
Muy buen trabajo de este joven no solo realizó la salida rgb también realizó ajuste de colores la mayoría de los técnicos ya no realizan esos trabajos de la vieja escuela en televisiónes CRT saludos desde México 🧐👌
that was some nice and clean soldering
This looks fantastic. You should get the PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 2 RGB SCART cables from Retro Gaming Cables if you have said systems (get the ones with the GunCon ports so you can play Light Gun games on the CRT in RGB!)
I actually have a homemade rgb cable I use for my ps1 and a set of the hd retro vision component cables for the ps2 that work great with this tv and a guncon I love the time crisis ps2 ports
Amazing video, looking forward to any more videos, quality of the videos is extremely high!
Good this video recommend, so i guess growth is coming for your channel)
Pretty sick, man 😎🤙Good stuff! I enjoy watching your content. This stuff is interesting to learn about. So, thanks for your efforts!
Keep the channel going dude.definately make a video about your thoughts and im your experience, about getting a "new crt". Lets say its wonky, out of square, warbly sides, odd color etc. and the steps you take, where you start and why you move/touch/tweak what you do and in what order for what reason. We all have our own ways, and interesting to me to see the difference in where people start and their thinking, as theres plemty of diy techs who dont have a clear textbook background and a lost for protcols. So it seems many people have a different way explainimg what certain things do, or at least how they convey it. But you seem well spoken, and id be interested in your take. Some folks start in the service memu, others open it up and go straight for the rings, and others are tuning the pots on the neck amd boards while using the service menu. Ive just got 3 crts in the past few weeks, all have issues that i cant correct past a certain point.one is just an old tube i believe, an it doesnt help that the guy that gave it away on fb,helped me move it and drove the dolley off a step at am angle and the 220 lb, 32' kv wega fell righ on its face on concrete.Ive seen ppl who have big sets (32,36,40) anf say theyll never be perfevt yet theyll pull up the grid and im like damn,no thats pretty mich perfect. Meanwhile i was strugglin to straighten out a 19'. I tried comvergance strips(also be curious to hear your take) as i "made" some using both magnets and razor blades, yet i took one out of another set(a favtory comverganve strip) and it honestly doesnt seem to be a magnet on the end at all, it seems to be rubber, which in my mind makes sense as itd block magnetism from the yoke,so i dunno what you know, but it seemed to me that magnets didnt really do anything. The razer blades had some effect, but the corners on this one tv are just wayyyy too out for it to even brimg it closer back to optimal.the convergence is so off, you can see every color seperately, smeary blurring reds centimeges away from where it should be.and i just got the same model as in this video, and its a little wavy(again i suspect a tired tube).i havent gone inside yet. But its got thinking that after 3 crts with issues, it may just be worth it to spend hundreds and hundreds on a tv that i know was cleaned up,possibly recapped and reflowed im certain ares, modded potentially and calibrated to a great spot. A video called "crts- what i know(aquiring, tinkering, calibrating, adjusting)" would be pretty cool. Alot of videos seem more so aimed at other folks with probably the same knowledge or more experience
Wow thanks for the huge reply. I definitely want to cover settings and convergence. The video I’m working on now is kinda what you described but for game consoles. It’s been a while but I’m still making videos. Thanks again for watching.
This came out so well edited, it's unbelievable for a small channel like yours
Thank you! I’ve found a lot of great resources for learning to use davinci on UA-cam as well as the black magic studio free tutorials.
I have that exact Sony, i bought it new at Sears 23 or so years ago. I use it still with my MiSTer and component.
it might be my favorite set that i have. my little one that i added s/video to is also up there the two basically are the only sets i really use right now.
Thanks for the video, it's very well done and you did a great job walking through the mod. I'm glad the guide was helpful!
I'm surprised the horizontal switch didn't work - I've used it on several different Trinitrons over the years and haven't had any issues as long as the internal switches are set properly. I don't think it's dangerous - it uses the same circuit as the horizontal centering pot on PVMs and the voltage shift is small relative to the deflection pulse itself. I'll have to do some testing next time I mod a BA5.
Well what do you know? I have a 20FS12 with a BA-5 chassis. Now I have a video tutorial for my TV's RGB mod. Thank you so much!
Don’t forget to checkout the guide I linked in the description it’s got great pictures and diagrams!
Awesome. Seeing a CRT mod like this on video makes it a shitload less scary. For whatever reason, modding systems never bothered me- I hard modded my OG Xbox the day I bought it. But CRT's have always scared the crap out of me. The end result here- You can tell that the darker colors are handled better, and I am sure it come across better in person- But S-Video is looking pretty damn good on that display.
S/vid on n64 is probably just as good as rgb for almost anyone snes is a bigger difference imo
I felt the same way.
I was scared to inadvertently kill myself, but it's not as scary when it's finally done. You realize as long as you take proper precautions then you'll be fine.
Was able to do a rgb mux mod on a kv20fv10 that came out great.
I feel like the video on N64 is so ridiculously blurry that its hard to pick up the differences between different video sources. Every other 240p console is much sharper, and 480i consoles have more actual detail in the source image that they benefit from from upgraded cables more than the N64 does.
Hella clean work
Thanks!
Thanks for posting this. I have a Trinitron with a BA-5 chassis that i am going to mod
great job
If I was near you I would pay you to do this to mine. RGB is a game changer.
Now I want to get my KV-27FS17 RGB modded. Awesome work 👏🏾
Thank you!
@@Chibichiefgetting back to you. I see that the 27fs12 can be rgb modded, what about a 27FS17?
Based on the diagram in this service manual yes it should be possible to mod this model to rgb archive.org/details/kv27fs13
Edit: I know it says fs13 but on the cover other models are listed
@@Chibichief okay thanks
😢 such a beauty 💗
waw
Can't you just use component on mister and play on the genesis core or just use an rgb to component transcoder? Honestly if it has component inputs its good enough for me. Can't really tell the difference. I definitely want to get a capacitor kit and recap mine though. It is a great set. Good work looks good. I subscribed and I am looking forward to see those geometry adjustments. Maybe recapping episode? thanks
Your right I could and actually have played my mister on this tv with component cables but there are some minor differences in how rgb and component are processed. Normal playing it would be difficult to tell the difference but I love messing about with adding features and this mod also lets me play rgb n64 the mister can’t do that yet.
Hey great vid! I’m a beginner when it come to these kinds of mods but I’m super into them. I’m pretty far into researching one for my tv but I’m a bit stuck on some of the final parts. Bit of a long shot but would you mind if I asked a few questions over email?
For sure I could lend a hand you can dm me on insta @chibichief or on Reddit U/link_040188
I sent you a msg :) @@Chibichief
I got chu
Hopefully it's just me but I sincerely think s-video looked best out of the 3
Honestly I reshot the comparison portion probably 8 times and I still was not happy with it. In person the colors for rgb are better and some games have a tiny bit of artifacts that rgb cleans up but I had so much trouble capturing it I gave up for this video and will make another attempt later when I spotlight another n64 mod I’m getting ready to do.
I also enjoyed the look of the SVideo but the RGB was definitely miles above composite. SVideo has its own sort of look IMO.
I would say the effort isn't worth the minimal upgrade over S-video.
That’s fair for the comparisons on n64 but it does give me maximum compatibility for almost every analog input.
Any reason to not just perma blank it instead of a switch? when are you going to use composite again?
i mean it would also perma blank the component input and also my nes is not rgb modded. or somthing like a ds lite output mod that outputs composite. i wanted to be able to still use all the inputs thats the only reason.
@@Chibichief yeah thanks for the reply. Was thinking of my own setup selfishly, that has no composite or component
Don’t sweat I make the same mistake thinking the other way when I get too detailed thinking “who wouldn’t want to know this”
svideo looks better
In person it is almost identical but it could just be the effort I put it that makes it look better to me but I’m wondering which one makes a better base signal for upscaling with something like a retrotink. I hope ima able to pick up a tink4k
Bulls$&t it does😂
Rgb modding a crt with component is pointless
Why?
rgb and component are the same level of quality assuming both are using optimal picture settings@@arturorojas8673
@@arturorojas8673 because the quality is almost exactly the same. It’s just a difference in connector. The red green and blue lines are still separated (which is all that matters). Still an awesome video, but would be much more worthwhile on a TV that does not have component inputs to begin with.
