  • This video discusses the various cables and video outputs from retro consoles. When I discuss each cable, the scope of the topic is limited to retro consoles and not the standard itself.
    Eg Component for example can produce HD resolutions, but not from retro consoles.
    Choosing the right Retro Gaming Cable
    Your TV plays a large part in deciding Which is best so if you're a RGB SCART kind of guy, then stick to RGB and upscale it. If your an American who never had the SCART connector on your TV, then stick to Component and Composite.
    OK let's clarify some points from the comments!
    1. SCART isn't a format, it's a piece of plastic and metal.
    2. RGB is the format inside SCART, but it can also carry S-Video and Composite. Please be specific.
    3. Resolution is a determining factor when choosing cables! As the consoles got newer came higher resolutions, so naturally you may choose a different cable to get the best out of them. PS2 for example is best used with Component cables as the CONSOLE supports a higher resolution over that format only.
    4. RESOLUTION: The term 240p describes a resolution of approximately 320x240 pixels progressively. It means each line is drawn on the screen one after another. Most retro consoles were limited to 240P so RGB was the CLEANEST best.way to get the video to your TV.
    If you mess about with 240P, you get 480i
    Standard definition television (NTSC) is 480i, a far cry from HDTV's 720p and 1080i. The i stands for interlaced. This means that every 60th of a second, half the image is shown. The first 60th shows the odd lines of the image, the second 60th shows all the even lines. Your eye/brain combines these into one image
    Think of 480i as a messed up 240P
    Things then stepped up to 480P progressive scan
    The Dreamcast is a great example of 480P in the format of VGA.
    Traditionally, VGA is 640x480 pixels, and yes can be called the same format as 480P.
    So as newer consoles introduced higher resolutions, we have to move to WHICHEVER cable supports that mode. So 480P for example can only easily be had from VGA or Component. It's then the best choice for THAT console.
    5. Which cable to use?
    IT DEPENDS ON YOUR TV AND EXISTING SETUP!!! There's no real answer for ALL but here's my breakdown.
    UPDATE 2020 - I would now recommend a RAD2X HDMI cable if it's available for your console. Check them out here at RGC shorturl.at/vNSV7
    Old consoles like Atari - Composite 240P or RF if that's all it had
    NINTENDO
    Famicom - Composite or RGB modded 240P
    Super Nintendo - RGB 240P
    Gamecube - Offical Digital component cables - 480P, otherwise PAL can run RGB 240P and NTSC S-Video 240P
    N64 - RGB 240P, or modded with Ultra64 to HDMI
    Wii - Do we even care? Use Component for 480P
    SEGA
    Master System - RGB 240P
    Mega Drive / Genesis - RGB 240P
    Saturn - RGB 240P
    Dreamcast - VGA 480P, or RGB 240P
    PS1 - RGB 240P
    PS2 - Component 480P but RGB can also do 480P when in RGsB mode. Stick to Component as it's easier and looks good.
    XBOX Original - Component 480i and 480P
    XBOX 360 - HDMI if it has it, otherwise Component
    Newer consoles - HDMI (Don't even mess about, if it has HDMI use it.)
    6. Component is a fantastic format for newer consoles! :) RGB was the best for older retro consoles. I guess that's the summary that a lot of people just don't get.
    7. On older consoles that are limited to 240P, RGB is the best. Things changed at the XBOX, Dreamcast and PS2 generation when they introduced HIGHER resolutions such as 480i and 480P which were generally only supported by Component.
    For more reading and a way better explanation of each console, go and harass Bob over at retrorgb.com/ He's a top bloke and has very interesting explanations of everything.
    I personally recommend RGB SCART cables from these guys in the UK. They make extremely high-quality cables with custom Sync audio options. They also ship worldwide for US customers.

      It's just tapping into the RGB output and converting it to y/pb/pr., they don't like to make that too specific, but there's a bunch of folks now thinking component video output is something available from all those 16 bit consoles.

    thanks so much for the video. I've always hated composite and RF. most of my gear is component or RGB SCART as I have three Loewe CRT TV's and they have four scart inputs with two being RGB Scart and the other two being composite only. I was going to get an RGB Scart cable for one of my PS2's but your video helped me stick with component, it's awesome.

    Component cables are certainly underrated. Due to a lack of inputs on my TV, I had to resort to the component input, and after a HDMI conversion, I can output a 1080p picture with it.
    I would still use scart for my older AV stuff, and because I grew up in Ireland, I have a lot of nostalgia associated with scart.

      using composite via SCART was common in the UK ,it does make a slight different because it separates the signals via the pins ,basically just less interference ,it dosnt polish a turd but it makes it less noisy through the signal path

      Global Garage there hard to find, especially at a good price. I personally got a 14N6U which was a 14 incher but I could find reviews on it. Its small to work with but i personally find 14' to still be immersible experience if experienced in the right environment, not the best but given it was $120 vs a $350 more known 14L5. I'd say the best spot is local because even if you find one on eBay there's so few people will snatch it because of how easily they can find it.
      I found this channel trying to find the same problem as I encountered for one of my Sega genesises and came up short, license screen but will not boot up the game no matter what I do, the board looks fine so I'm questioning the pins or an overlooked cap. paid $14.50 so its not a loss if I don't figure it out haha. Thanks for replying! :)

    Some additional notes, correct me if I'm wrong:
    I don't get your reasoning against the 1-pin plugs. Coaxial cables can throughput several hundreds of Megabits per second and they also use just one pin.
    At 5:22 you say, analog audio was not really good in general, only "o.k.", but it's used everywhere, also for Hi-Fi stuff.
    As someone already pointed out, the analog VGA cable can also be used for 1080p. Someone also made a video about a 1080i SCART-connection using a PS2 on UA-cam.
    I think some devices can send a component signal (video only) via SCART connectors.

    Voltage does not go down the wire, it is current that flows. "Digital cables" are not digital at all. It is still analog signals and currents flowing along a wire. It is the protocol that is digital and decoded / encoded. This is still an analog signal that transitions very fast which radiates more spurious emissions which is why high quality HDMI cables have better screening around the individual conductors or bundles of conductors.

      I had a DELL 900p monitor that allowed forcing of 1080p with minimal quality loss and with VGA and HDMI. Well from what I understood at the time (this was 2011, I was 16 or 17) after hours of research, that the OG XBOX did not have VGA output on a hardware level. So I thought, what if I splice the wires to work like component but just through VGA, seeing as they are both analogue.
      So I matched colours just like when rewiring headphones. A little wire tape and krazy glue (no soldering iron at the time) I was able to build an original XBOX VGA cable. It's literally that simple as long as the monitor supports Y, Pb/Cb, and Pr/Cr as well as RGB. It was just as simple as plug and play as soon as I got the other leads like sync, various 12v rails and others in their right place. Audio wasn't even an issue because the component cable came with them already attached. Just switch the monitor from it's default RGB to Y Pb Pr.
      If you're wondering what gave me the inspiration to do this, I had an old tube TV that recently killed over, and I had no other way of getting some JSRF and Midtown Madness 3 nostalgia going. So I used the VGA port on my monitor since my Xbox 360 was using the HDMI.

    I've never used S-Video and such things, in Europe everything had SCART. I remember there was adapter for PS1 and PS2 to connect it to SCART on your TV. Oldest VHS players had only coaxial cable with signal and you had to find it in your TV as normal TV channel but then only SCART was everywhere. Sometimes even yellow, green and white cables for connet sound and picture, that was also common. People were saying scart is better but I've never seen any important difference, maybe even scart looked worse I would say because many scart cables and connectors were poor quality with bad contacts, it didn't hold in TV good and there was too much cables near to each others so that can be reason why cheap scarts had such terrible picture with interference. I've never seen ghosting with yellow cinch composite video.
    I think problem with LCDs is not only with conversion from analog to digital, it's even about LCD can't diapley sharply non native resolution, even PC monitors have same problem. You have for example 4K monitor and you want to play in FHD and it looks terrible. Same problem was in the past when I had 1680x1050 monitor and I wanted to play in 1280x800, it just looked blurry. I think the best way how to use old consoles is find some good quality CRT, but it's not so easy today and there is problem with blinking 50 Hz refresh rate which is burning my eyes, but console players were sitting much further than pc users so that wasn't so big problem.

    Question why now in present time
    I heard so many people saying that component video quality is the same as RGB scart???

    • @cius96
      @cius96 4 місяці тому

      They're almost the same, but RGB SCART edges it (it's a tiny bit better). The downside though is that RGB SCART does not support progressive scan output, only interlaced (so if you have e.g. some ps2 games which have a 480p / 576 p output then you can only use component, otherwise you'll get 480i / 576i and the TV will deinterlace the signal. Btw there are only a few NTSC ps2 games that support progressive resolution and even fewer PAL ones, so it's not really a big deal)

  • @Stjaernljus
    @Stjaernljus 7 років тому

    A PSA for people buying (cheap)SCART cables, cheap ones often say they are RGB but they "forget" the switching resistors to put it into RGB mode making it run in composite mode, also many "forget" the caps and/or resistors often required on the RGB lines(depending on the console).

    • @GlobalGarageAus
      @GlobalGarageAus  7 років тому

      Yep Sandy that's what happens with cheap cables. I've seen plenty of cheap SCART cables with the bias voltage set too low on Pin 16 causing this exact problem. The Chinese factories will sometimes use ANY resistor they have instead of the correct rating. For others reading this, check out Pin 16 on the right side of this Wiki article. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SCART

    Haven't finished watching, but it's pretty good so far. I wouldn't brush off S-video though. The jump in clarity from composite to S-video is huge. The just from S-video to component / RGB is still a noticeable improvement, but S-video isn't disappointing at all -- unless you get the ubiquitous junk cable that sends composite video (chroma+luma) through both the chroma and luma signal pins.

    • @GlobalGarageAus

      S-Video is pretty good compared to RF and Composite, but these days no TV supports S-Video so it's a bit of a dead end to follow. You're way better off using RGB cables into an OSSC and playing everything on a modern TV. I've started to move away from CRTs now.

    One wire can carry a lot of information, its all about the encoding or the context it is being used, since this is analog RF using a primitive encoding scheme on a even on a 7MHz wide channel it is correct that the quality would be rubbish by todays standards, but the same cable in theory can carry almost unlimited amount of bandwidth, subject to distance limitations, cable quality, attenuation and other factors.
    DOCSIS cable modems using the same single core cable can modulate using 256-QAM up to 38Mbps of digital information in the downstream on a slightly narrower 6MHz channel, now with newer versions of docsis that have bonding technology, it is able to combine multiple channels within the available bandwidth spectrum of that single core cable over RF now going up to the gigaherz range. We can push in theory with symmetrical DOCSIS 3.1 10Gbps in both directions.
    Of course the physical layer 1 signal would be analog but with the complex encoding and advanced error correction of lower and upper layer digital protocols, we can even deliver 4K video or higher through the line without any loss in quality. Any inconsistancies in the signal will be corrected by the algorithm so it will be hardly if at all can be noticed by the user, or if the signal is that bad, it may not work at all.
    For this very reason some critical applications like 2way radio retain analog transmission like between aeroplanes and ATC is because of this: even if the signal is full of static the trained ear of a pilot or a air traffic controller may still be able to make out the transmission vs with digital it is either crystal clear or nothing gets thru at all but both roughly using the same amount of analog bandwidth on the channel.
    It is the same reason a pair of "skinny" phone lines only provides a slow 56k thru dialup but the same pair when fed thru a VDSL DSLAM and bonded can reach over 100Mbps, but a 4pair cable (of which only 2 is used unless its gigabit) can only deliver 10Mbps over original Ethernet

    I would submit a bit of a correction. Component video is capable of carrying various signals, such as 480i, 480p, 576i, 576p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, 2160p and beyond. Many new high definition TVs support the use of component video up to their native resolution.

    What's so complicated to explain about component video? Green is the Luma (Y) and sync information, Blue is the phase difference of Luma - Blue (Pb), and Red is the difference of Luma - Red (Pr). The difference of Luma - Green is not carried through the cables, but the device receiving the signal determines that itself based on the other signals it received.

I hesitated when explaining this in the video as I target my content for an audience who generally wants to know the basics and make informed purchasing decisions or just to get the best out of their setup. To All,
    I have been going nuts in the past couple of months
    trying to find the ideal RGB SCART cable for the Sega Saturn NA Version.
    Each cable claimed to be the best, yet a loud annoying buzz feedback
    has been coming through on my audio feed. I discovered this feedback
    noise is caused from poor quality cables that do no shield wires. Hence,
    90% of the cables out there. "retro_console_accessories" of EBAY
    sells a RGB SCART cable 10 times thicker than the normal cable for a
    little more cost. Get the shield upgrade charge with this cable. I am
    running Bowers & Wilkins 7.2 Channel Stereo system with a very good
    receiver. I put the volume to max and still zero noise feedback!! The
    picture quality is amazing, colors that are normally deficient are now
    complete, bright and vibrant. If you are serious about retro gaming in
    high quality use a good SCART cable with a HD Upscaler Box.

      Interesting comment. I noticed that too. As far as I know, the order from S-Video on should be: S-Video, SCART, VGA, Component and so on. On a Dreamcast, if you use SCART and VGA you'll get the same quality level. VGA will have a brighter image compared to SCART and that's all. Component cables are excellent! Check it out the differences on UA-cam. Regardless, Global Garage did an amazing job by simplifying and being straightforward in this video. Yes and no,, Scart is better than component always.. the difference on the ps2 is that there are some games that prefer the component over the scart for specific rendering images. but most of the games look better on the scart than component. when you use component the console has to do more mathematical equations to send the right color signals. With the RGB is a direct signal.

      It's hard for me to say with any certainty what your issue is. Have you checked RGB SCART on a CRT TV? That's a good first step to ensure the mod work was done properly and the cable is working as it should. Supposing that's all correct, then your HDMI upscaler should look amazing. You need to test each component separately. The RGB Mod, the cable, the sync in the cable, the upscaler. I suspect your upscaler is no good.

    nice job but... more pins isn't always better.. for example a RGB scart cable cannot run 480p yet component despite R+G+B+sync being in 3 RCA jacks, it can do 480p and up to 1080i. HDMI even though its digital is also a good example of this though your missing Display port which can go up to 8K@60hx - maybe more and unlike HDMI has more pins i admit and a locking mechanism. still a great video for people trying to get into better quality connections though! :)

    • @GlobalGarageAus
      @GlobalGarageAus  7 років тому

      toon man I know what you mean and yes Component YPbPr supports very high resolutions. The point I make is that separating the signal into discreet parts always yields a better result. I prefer RGB for retro 240P as the signal was available on nearly all consoles whereas Component wasn't. Moving on in the generations like PS2 and Xbox saw Component take over and support 480P etc. HDMI and Display port are digital, so they use serial data transfer so that's an entirely different topic.

    • @addition6705
      @addition6705 7 років тому

      Global Garage well its based on what tech there using at the time, for example a Dreamcast looks great in SCART but 480p on VGA looks better. Which I believeVGA is less pins than SCART but VGA was used later in the analog format thus revisions and changes of the old technology could be made. Pins theoretically mean better picture but its based on what the console supports and a majority of the time more pins is better but it depends.

    • @GlobalGarageAus
      @GlobalGarageAus  7 років тому

      toon man Yep don't take the point as "more pins is better" as that's not what I'm saying. Composite video over one pin is inferior to eg Component as the video is separated. It's purely about the separation of signals from the video encoder chip to the Tv. VGA does look stunning on the Dreamcast! That uses separate RGB and HV Sync.

    • @Random.Walker.
      @Random.Walker. 7 років тому

      Not true "RGB scart cable cannot run 480p". RGB scart can do Sync on green 480p. You can use Sync on green PS2 and modded original Xbox but there are not many TV that supports it. PS2 almost 220 games support 480p and Xbox have almost 370 games support 480p.

    • @GlobalGarageAus

      When all factors are equal, there's very little difference at all. The reason most of the retro gaming community prefers RGB is that most of the old consoles output RGB directly from their internal chips and all that's required is a cable to access it. RGB is just red, green and blue all separated out cleanly. Component video is not found on early consoles and requires a conversion to make it work. This is how the HD Retrovision cables work.

  • @TheSwartz

    Ironically, quality of digital cables is becoming a thing (like it used to be with analog cables). As we get to pushing 4K60, then 4K120, then eventually looking at 8K... we need higher and higher bandwidths. So, the old idea of "any HDMI cable will do" is no longer true.

    - RF is clearly the worst connector ever; along with very lossy video quality and jammed mono sound, you have to switch to the right channel. You may understand why the AVGN went to composite on all his 80's consoles
    - composite was good with black & white displays but then colors were added... at least the audio channels are separated. Unfortunately composite was the best video signal for most consoles of the 80's
    - S-video was not so common in the US, and nearly unknown in Europe; the video quality is nearly as good as RGB and the best quality available for north american customers until Dreamcast (VGA) and PS2/GC/XBOX shown up

      I think most of common TVs and VHS players had only component scart because I remember it looked terrible with scart and it was mostly better with yellow component video cinch. Most of people had cheap products and most of them even didn't know there is something like RGB scart. And mostly in 90s when you had piciture you was glad it works, nobody was experimenting with that much, they just used what they had at home (mostly some random scart). I preffered yellow cinch, I had many problems with scarts with ghosts and connector was holding very bad in tv so you had to constantly going there to fix it, I hated that, many people had it somehow fixed by duct tape to keep that in place, that was very common. Maybe Americans are lucky that they didn't have scart. :-)

    If you only option is RF, just get an older televison, I got an 1988 model Bang Olufsen TV, RF is great, looks better than the hd capable NES classic for trained eyes. Play this things on the tech they was designed to do

    You made a really bad analogy at 3:30 as listening to a vinyl record vs a digital audio file, the vinyl in the right gear will ALWAYS sound better and warmer and cleaner than the digital audio file. Not the best choice of words.

    • @GlobalGarageAus

      I think I said Gramophone... but I had Phonograph in mind with poor tinny sound. I see your point though. You sounds like an audio buff, so I wont provoke you. :P

      Enchurito you may always prefer the analog recording but it is not always technically superior. You're arguing that your opinion is better than others opinions not that the signal source is technically superior.

    So which is best? RGBS/RGBHV/RGsB? Don't go around telling people to use component because 99% of component cables are YPbPr, which is shit compared to RGB.
    Then we have to ask what connector is best? RCA/SCART/D-SUB/BNC?
    And lastly, what is the best length and wire shielding?
    Realistically the PS2, Dreamcast and original Xbox are the only three analog consoles worth the hassle for. The Wii and NGC have emulation and the WII U's HDMI. The N64 has a direct to digital HDMI mod. The PS1 has a near cycle perfect emulator, as does the Saturn and the SNES. The others tend to have better emulation per output connector quality at the moment and can't be changed apart from hardware mods.
    So the three questions above could be answered for the three consoles above with testing.

      It's hard to say which RGB standard is "best" but I'd say RGBHV and the horizontal and Vertical sync signals are also separated. It's basically the same as VGA. Component YPbPr is OK if that's what you've got. Which connector is best? That's a tough one, but I'd say BNC for analogue video. I know what you're saying about the older consoles being perfectly emulated so why bother, but there's something nice about playing on a real console in RGB, without conversion to another format and on a CRT. It's got its flaws but damn it's nostalgic.

    • @levant5378
      @levant5378 7 років тому

      I agree. If I was to choose a standard it would be RGBHV over BNC. What I mean by best after all is the highest quality signal with least noise, lets hope that direct digital video data tapping like they have for the N64 spreads to other consoles. As for having the old hookup, I agree, it is nostalgic. But what is the likelihood of someone being able to get their hands on a decent CRT these days? after all its not like Sony is going to open source their PVM designs, or fire up a production line of PVM's to sell to retro gamers. So for emulation, I actually find running the CRT-Royale shader to be near enough the best of both worlds for well-emulated consoles, purely digital cycle-accurate PVM quality CRT goodness without the price tag.

      Not at all, just some people aren't aware of the amazing options that are now available for retro consoles, like the RAD2X HDMI cables over at www.retrogamingcables.co.uk/RAD2X-CABLES?tracking=566ea08ca2b69

    LCD is garbage for retro gaming. Even playing on an old CRT TV with S-Video is superior to playing on an LCD with RGB Scart and upscalers. At least there won't be any motion blur, input delay and the blacks will look black.

    • @GlobalGarageAus
      @GlobalGarageAus  7 років тому

      Yes, I'd have to agree about LCD in general. I love my old CRT as it has RGB SCART inputs so it looks amazing, but I realise this was only available in Europe and Australia mainly. For USA people, I think a modern upscaler like the Framemeister Mini with RGB actually does a really good job and is certainly an option for those that only have the space for a flat screen LCD/LED/PLASMA/OLED TV.

    • @levant5378
      @levant5378 7 років тому

      An OLED running a SNES emulator with crt-Royale would make a show of almost every CRT possible. Larger screen size, better blacks, BVM quality output, cycle perfect digital output.

    You could (probably) have explained all this in 10 minutes o less. So redundant. I do not need to hear the same thing 3-4-5 times. Move on to the next item. I had to play it 1.5x to make it bearable.

      Michaelblog456 A few people have commented on that, but what I said was Gramophone which is circa 1887, not the modern record player. Very different things,
      but I do agree with you about the warm tone from vinyl.

    • @Michaelblog456
      @Michaelblog456 6 років тому

      I've had some people jump down my throat about using stranded RCA audio leads, that and with the ageing PS2 or PS3 some have a optical output is also an option, if you can or want to convert it.
      So hence the audio freak comment.
