Except ball boxes are behind you, on mats the tees are on the wrong side so you have to flip the mat, and half the time the cubes point slightly right which is very strange for lefties
Well done Golf Monthly! The biggest issue is the lack of choice available to us lefties. This then spills over into the secondhand market where we can end up paying 40%-60% more for a club than right handlers!
My two additions as a fellow lefty are: Pulling the golf cart up and parking it for a right handed shot. I frequently have to ask the driver to move the cart. Most golf instructional books are written from a right handed perspective. I've spent years translating instructions into language for a lefty.
Great video and comments. As a lefty, I’m usually playing with a right handed partner. None of us are good enough that we don’t slice bombs, which inevitably sends us hundreds of yards apart with ONE CART…”yeah, I’ll take my rescue hybrid, 5, pw, and putter with me…have a nice ride.”
On the ranges here in the US, the mats are always positioned for righties. So you are constantly sliding the mats over to the left side. They are often heavy and dirty and more so after a rain or washing down. When riding in a cart, unless you are driving, your partner invariably positions the cart on the wrong side so you have to remind them to move the cart to the opposite side. And I agree wholeheartedly that they position tee markers only thinking of the impact for a righty. And let's not forget every training video and golf magazine. When they say right hand, you have to think left, When they say left you have to think right. Hand positions, feet positions, shoulder turns, etc. All frustrating annoyances. However, having golfed for 50+ years, I can state unequivocally that the choices in equipment are so much better. When I started I had one choice for clubs from one maker, at least in stock affordable sets. And only one left-handed pro to follow, Bob Charles.
Not a bad pro to follow though aye. Bob Charles is an absolute legend from a fellow New Zealander and I still have some of his LH branded clubs that were on sale when he was playing. Total respect to the man.
Although I only started playing about 20 years ago, the selection was the roughly the same, although I can’t imagine it 30 years prior if you weren’t in an area where golf was popular. If I wanted clubs to play with that day or the next, I had one choice. The second hand market is atrocious to this day😂. Especially if you’re looking for budget friendly options. I just found a used driver that was lofted at less than 10.5 degrees after looking for 2 years. I felt amazingly lucky to find a used set for my daughter recently. I just decided for no reason really to check it out. I had to inform my wife how rare they find was and that I needed to buy them right then 😆
Back in the 90s, it was a pain to get youth clubs for me...mom always had to special order...finding used clubs took all weekend of going to garage sales and flea markets. But such is life for a lefty...
I'm 39 and my childhood was filled with my mom having to take me to 6 diff stores looking for a left handed mit or left handed hockey stick.. Shit even when I was just recently looking for a golf glove.. Wal mart had a thousand lefts and no rights. Now between all the shifts at my work there like 30 of us.. No lie.. Iv never seen so many left handed people in one spot.
I love being left handed . At our local club last Saturday we had a group of four and three of us were lefty's. I'm 62 now and have been playing since I was 15 . I did get down to 5 briefly but played of 5-9 handicap for a big percentage of time ..Shot about eight under 70 rounds with a best of 66 and many hundreds of sub 80 rounds and being a lefty was never a real problem ..I was the only left hander in our Div 3 pennant team most of the time though . I haven't played for about the last 9 years but have re started again in 2022...Still using the old clubs . King Irons including a 2 iron to standard loft wedge and sand iron , no hybrids just a Nicklaus 10.5 Driver , Nicklaus 3 metal , and a 7 metal ... That said a good friend also a lefty was telling me how hard it was for him to get a bag of new gear organised so I totally agree with you on that point especially... I'm now losing a lot of distance to lots of right handed players too...never mind , just loving playing again ...
Brilliant... and about time! Wrong side of the player on the tee (tick), no equipment in pro shop (tick), lack of gloves (double tick), given a right-handed driver to try (tick). We don't have the trouble of winter mats here in Australia, but I find a similar problem with mats in the training nets... not only are the footmarks difficult to hit out of, but the rubber tees are always (ALWAYS!) on the wrong side... sigh :/ (But in a twist, it's me who compares himself to Phil's short game! :)
I'm a left-handed woman, finding left-handed women's clubs is virtually impossible! I went to a Top Golf with friends and the mats were completely worn down from all the feet. I almost asked for a new mat, I was having so much difficulty.
You are NOT moaning too much! My co-workers asked me why I was left handed once. I told them, if you hand me a hockey stick/baseball bat/golf club, I'm left handed. Ask me to throw/roll a ball? I'm right handed.
I’m guessing you write right-handed, I’m the same. It’s probably the first stick sport you learned you mirrored your teacher and when they had it in their right, you had it in your left
Great video! I've actually offered my new Epic driver to my right-handed partners, and it was a hoot watching them trying to hit it. Fortunately, I live in SoCal (close to Callaway and Taylor Made), so lefty clubs are often in stock for us. I love your bit about having your right-handed partners not knowing where to stand. It's so true and happened again to me today on the course. And, like you said, my short game and Phil's are not on the same par. Gloves is another big issue, and I'm always ending up ordering online. (Under Armour always seems to have them.) Thanks again and keep up the great content.
So very true. I think all the golf courses are designed for right handed players, so frustrating. Also the vast majority of u tube hints , lessons etc are for right handed players. Us lefties need more dedicated learning sites
This fellow lefty wishes he had researched left handed golf bags. After investing in a stand bag online, I realized upon it's arrival that I have always carried my bag on my left shoulder. This becomes awkward when two shoulder straps and a back pad are set up for right handed users. I do my best to conform but old habits die hard and I find myself routinely doing laps around my bag to pick it up. No matter how ridiculous I undoubtedly look, I love my setup so a little extra time admiring my clubs is welcomed and may even appease the Golf Gods... eventually.
Course set up’s are normally for right handed people. But I had a local course with 2 hard dog leg lefts. Loved those holes. Could tee it up and smash it. Even with a slice it’s heading the right way.
Personally I love being left handed. I've got used to all the things highlighted in this video, some aren't even an issue at all. The lack of choice of equipment probably saves me £1000's if I'm honest.
Excellent video. Equipment issues are the biggest problem. Unless I drive 100 miles to specialist left hand golf retailers very little choice. As for fitting my pro shop said that there are not enough lefties to stock selection. Custom fitting is relying on Titleist, Ping etc to have demo day in which case you are very much tied to the manufacturer. WE NEED MORE CHOICE!!
Hey, I’ve lost count how many times my playing partners have asked me to hit a shot for them. “Pete, I’m jammed against the tree. Come and hit it for me.” Just hysterical. The first 50 times.
I would say wedge selection, I have only ever seen in stock at the stores or even online 52, 56, and 60 degree wedges, even if a company says they have more selections, I have never seen them. With modern lofts, gapping with wedges can be a huge issue.
As a lefty myself, I experience a number of the issues that you have brought up. Since the pandemic started, I have found that golf shops have less selection of putters. Even more so than prior to the pandemic.
This unfortunately has always been a problem for lefty’s. I was told that the putter that I ordered during boxing week would be in on February 22nd. Still waiting. I’m now looking at getting the Odyssey 11. I have seen a few right handed putters come in but sadly no left handed putters. Odyssey may lose my business very soon.
Yes. I don’t often slice, but one of my local course has all of the danger on the left side of the fairway. OOB, water, etc. Whereas the right handers’ slice will invariably find another fairway.
The narrow equipment choice is a definite frustration, I was custom fitted for my Orkas but not much choice. The advantage my right hand partners tell me is that golf courses are designed to be difficult for right hand not lefty's. Not sure about that one.🤔
When we hit a good pitch or chip we can claim we were channelling our inner Phil M!! Biggest challenge is i think most courses have more holes that favour right handers with a fade than a left hander.
I think others have mentioned it in previous comments, but on the range, it's hard to get a good spot for a lefty. In Japan they often have slots with mats on both sides, but only a few. I'm actually right-handed in everything using a racket. But in hockey, I shot on my left side, so it felt more natural to hit a golf ball from my left. The first club I tried was of course a right-handed club since I'm right-handed. But I held it with my right hand on the top and the left under. It looked ridiculous, but felt 'right'.😁
Another problem is I have a simulator set up in my house but I have limited space and can only be used by a lefty. So I can't have friends over to play because they're all right handed
I'm a lefty as well but I play with right hand clubs because that is what my dad gave me when I was a kid. Wonder if that's why I struggle with consistency.
I know you touched on it but in general, golf course architecture is predominantly designed for right handers. I completely understand due to the incredibly small percentage of left handed golfers but when you see a hole that’s wonderful for a lefty, it feels special😂.
Is it best for a fresh beginner lefty to just play right handed from the start? From what i'm gathering here is that i pretty much won't get to play with the rental clubs at local courses :/
Are you also left eye dominant and is your left arm the stronger and your right arm more dexterous? If so I wouldn't advise using right handed clubs. Your grip will be wrong too...
@@robertpage718 I think my left eye is dominant and left hand is stronger. I went to top golf and used the right handed and left handed clubs and it was a disaster, i got extremely bummed and haven’t tried golfing since. But I will give it another shot sometime
Great video. But to be clear Phil Mickelson is not left handed. Just uses left handed golf clubs. Being a right handed player with left handed club is advantageous in some ways. Jordan spieth is the opposite, he’s left handed and uses right handed gear. Both have great short game. And control on full swing with the main lever of the the swing in their more dexterous dominant arm.
Im a righty who uses left handed golf clubs because i used to play baseball and swing left handed. For me i would say that swinging from that side just feels so much better than from the right side
dAnother is if you do find clubs to test at shops their testing space is set up for right-handed people. They then have to move the simulator box to the correct side for us.
I think every point you made is basically rubbish apart from club selection and most can apply to right handed players as well. Most of the problems I have faced have to do with learning the game
As a righty who plays a draw 99% of the time, I run into limbs hanging into my tee shot line pretty frequently on public courses especially. It’s annoying.
As a lefty, here is one advantage: every time I hit a bad shot, I say I'm using right-handed golf balls. It's near impossible finding left handed golf balls!
Of all of these, finding decent gloves is the worst. My local golf superstore has two full aisles of gloves for the left hand, and 1/8 of an aisle for gloves for the right hand; and most of them are cheap quality.
@@petermcgill1315 Tried it. Didn't work for me. I use an interlock grip, and without a glove, the fingernail on my little finger always ends up cutting my other hand.
@@petermcgill1315 I might try going back to overlap; I've gone back and forth over the years. I get my gloves from Vice; they make a very high quality glove (equal to the very nice Titleist players glove) for a *lot* less. I played over 100 rounds this past year, and I've only gone through two gloves, so I'm not that stressed about it. ;)
I'm a left hander but always played right handed as first few times that I went to driving range with family member as a youngster I used their clubs. Sometimes I do wonder if I would have been a better golfer if I played left handed
Think the equipment is definitely a big issue, however the other issues seemed to be fishing in my opinion. Just gotta be patient with your buddies learning how to play with a lefty
I'm a leftie trying to get into the game however, I cant find a set of clubs for a reasonable price to play with my grandfather. Every club or set Ive looked at is for righties and even new clubs Ive searched for are for righties even though i specifically search for left handed clubs
The fact that manufacturers often don't produce certain clubs like the 2-iron, 3-iron, or equivalent hybrids for left-handed golfers in most sets is quite frankly absurd. What's more frustrating is the likelihood of losing a club. If I accidentally leave a club near the green, there's a 50/50 chance I'll see it again if the group behind me is trailing by more than 15 minutes. It seems right-handed players often view left-handed clubs as fair game, thinking they might come in handy during a round. You'd be surprised how many times I've had to chase down players to their cars because they "accidentally" failed to return a club at the clubhouse after completing their 18 holes. It's always the same excuse: "Sorry, mate. I didn't realize I had it." (Between us, that's usually not true.) I've had friends play with some of these golfers who've openly expressed delight at finding an old left-handed club.
I have noticed at the driving range 3 things 1 My driving side is much cleaner 2 For some reason most of the lefties are bombers. Do lefties hit harder naturally? 3 No one can slice like a lefty ,lol
I use right handed clubs but I hold the club left handed as it feels more comfortable to me and my right handed friends thinks it’s crazy to see as holding the club the right way just feels unnatural to me
Difficulty finding good clubs discouraged me from playing golf 50-plus years ago. I was advised to learn to play right-handed, but that was NOT going to happen.
Oh man do i know the feeling of them not being in the correct spot when i swing! They always pull up to the right side of the ball with the cart.. not realizing i need to stand there to swing 😭
I think the tree and the tee box points are irrelevant. I have had the ball up against a tree before where a left handed person would have had a perfect shot. Just all depends where the ball ends up. The other points though sound spot on I would imagine 😂
I mean you could always learn to hit both ways lol thats what I have done , I have always hit right handed clubs but I am naturally left handed and can turn a lot more as a lefty and so thats what I am working on .
So basically you're saying that the biggest problem faced by lefties is ... being a lefty. Every single one of these was a variation of the theme of not being able to get or try kit, or that your (gasp) right-handed playing partners are forgetful or unsympathetic douchebags. The _only_ ones that were valid here are the general difficulty getting and trying equipment (though that is only one problem, not the three or four that you made it out to be) and the one about finding a clean lie on a winter mat - to be fair I hadn't thought of that. All the other things you mentioned are equally faced by all golfers.
As a lefty think u missed most issues major issues golf coarse are designed buy right handed folk so most coarse s go cloak wise ie out of bounds on 90 per cent golfers slice so lefty go go ob rh go in coarse love to play a lefty design coarse
Equipment issues I agree with as my son plays left handed even though he is right handed and find it hard to get junior left handed clubs. The rest of the things mentioned all golfers have.
I live in québec Canada and I play most of the time with lefty people I d'ont know why. some are even saying this part of the country is the lefty paradise. I can't count how many time I was the only righty in the whole foursome
What a load of rubbish. I make the following points in the name of sanity. I play with a leftie and he has good access to clubs, especially 2nd hand ones via ebay. You must play with some strange people if they stand in the wrong place when you are teeing off, it's common sense to stand out of someones eyeline regardless of what handed they are. Believe it or not, right handers suffer just as much from overhanging trees when teeing off as lefties do, at least that is what I have found on every course I have played. Right handers offering shiny new clubs to try - this moan seems that it is in there just to make the numbers up. Left handers often benefit from playing off mats because they stand on the grooved surface caused by right handed strikes and have a perfectly flat surface to play from. I am still trying to understand your reference to playing the short game, it baffles me. A shot over a bunker is exactly the same for a left or right handed player. I notice most of the comments below are from lefties, it's about time a righty put you right.
I no shocking that this is what they come up with. It would of been better if they came up with a roundup of the year on the channel. Than this poor thing
Spot on. The only advantage is on driving ranges, where the rightie side is all worn out but, the leftie side is pristine.
quite the opposite sir
@@WackZest If the range is actually grass, lefties get good grass

I'm a lefty...named Phil. Hear it all the time.
Of all of these, finding decent gloves is the worst. My local golf superstore has two full aisles of gloves for the left hand, and 1/8 of an aisle for gloves for the right hand; and most of them are cheap quality.
Mate, just channel Freddie Couples. It will save some money, too.
@@petermcgill1315 Tried it. Didn't work for me. I use an interlock grip, and without a glove, the fingernail on my little finger always ends up cutting my other hand.
@@msalzberg4962 overlap and a little tacky jell on the hands in the heat. And you have to have good grips.
@@petermcgill1315 I might try going back to overlap; I've gone back and forth over the years.
I get my gloves from Vice; they make a very high quality glove (equal to the very nice Titleist players glove) for a *lot* less. I played over 100 rounds this past year, and I've only gone through two gloves, so I'm not that stressed about it. ;)
@@msalzberg4962 at the very least you can have that commentator in your head “Fred Couples with. 6 iron....”
What about problems left handers have that play right handed.
What issues can you think of? As I am also a lefty playing righty.
Ben Hogan...?
I'm a lefty, but I learned playing right handed. Best decision.
Absolutely spot on great video
I'm a left hander but always played right handed as first few times that I went to driving range with family member as a youngster I used their clubs. Sometimes I do wonder if I would have been a better golfer if I played left handed
Although this is some 30years ago I didn’t like it, but nothing stopping you trying left handed clubs at a range 🙂
Last year I put a dent in my brand new 3 Wood because all the mats at the driving range were set up on the right hand side of the bay.
Going to shops and trying out different clubs and trying in gloves before you buy no shop near me has any lefts except for the high end ones
When I did play golf , I played with right handed clubs, mostly because I actually didn’t like the left handed swing .
Lol when I play with my left handed brother I'm always standing or parking a buggy the wrong side drives him mental
I am a lefty but have learnt to play golf right handed because I did not get a option, the only clubs around were right handed.
I have noticed at the driving range 3 things
1 My driving side is much cleaner
2 For some reason most of the lefties are bombers. Do lefties hit harder naturally?
3 No one can slice like a lefty ,lol
Oddly my whole family is left, I am right somehow
Weirdo!
Great, spot on,
The only reason I bought a set of clubs from Goodwill is because I'm a lefty. Finding used equipment to start with is hard.
I use right handed clubs but I hold the club left handed as it feels more comfortable to me and my right handed friends thinks it’s crazy to see as holding the club the right way just feels unnatural to me
The short game comparison was not valid. I look at golfers as golfers and not lefties or righties
Difficulty finding good clubs discouraged me from playing golf 50-plus years ago. I was advised to learn to play right-handed, but that was NOT going to happen.
My biggest issue is that I can't find any left-handed golf balls. That's why I slice instead of draw.
i play both left and right handed. problems solved.
I’d have thought it’s when you’re at a sim range and you have to turn round to see the screen after every shot
Oh man do i know the feeling of them not being in the correct spot when i swing! They always pull up to the right side of the ball with the cart.. not realizing i need to stand there to swing 😭
If I had a dollar for every time someone said I'm standing on the wrong side of the ball... 😑
I grew up using right handed clubs you couldn't find left handed clubs anywhere. Today you can find gloves.
Im with ya buddy😊
I think the tree and the tee box points are irrelevant. I have had the ball up against a tree before where a left handed person would have had a perfect shot. Just all depends where the ball ends up. The other points though sound spot on I would imagine 😂
In Canada a lot of right handed people golf left handed. We don't have the same problem.
I mean you could always learn to hit both ways lol thats what I have done , I have always hit right handed clubs but I am naturally left handed and can turn a lot more as a lefty and so thats what I am working on .
Thank god for Amazon 😊
I am here as a right handed with my dads right hand clubs
Equipment availability, and instructional videos… you have to reverse everything in your mind
SO TRUE
Like if you were just gifted a hand me down set. Only to find this dilemma the moment you finally want to learn.
Luckily my dad's best friend is a lefty and I get hand-me-downs from him
So basically you're saying that the biggest problem faced by lefties is ... being a lefty.
Very true. Lefty too.
How about when you hit a nice draw and your playing partners call it a slice! That annoys me!
As a lefty think u missed most issues major issues golf coarse are designed buy right handed folk so most coarse s go cloak wise ie out of bounds on 90 per cent golfers slice so lefty go go ob rh go in coarse love to play a lefty design coarse
I was lucky to get hand me downs 💀
PM is right handed he just mirrored his dad on range, did u ever try to carry anything with a lefty?
Equipment issues I agree with as my son plays left handed even though he is right handed and find it hard to get junior left handed clubs. The rest of the things mentioned all golfers have.
I live in québec Canada and I play most of the time with lefty people I d'ont know why. some are even saying this part of the country is the lefty paradise. I can't count how many time I was the only righty in the whole foursome
Something is wrong here did this guy seem left handed to y’all?
You could always play right handed.
this is why the lefty always drives the cart in america
Everything far worse for left handed women such as my wife
What a load of codswallop do right hand players not have problems with trees has well or isit just left handed my god seriously get a grip
Relax marc, not worth stressing yourself out over something so irrelevant as an opinion in a youtube video.
Just moaning. …….. I’m left handed and have none of those issues on the course.
Last day of the year and clearly run out of content ideas
I no shocking that this is what they come up with.
It would of been better if they came up with a roundup of the year on the channel.
Than this poor thing
So no real problems
