This video goes over tensioning considerations for locks with standard pins. A general rule of thumb is that standard pins can tolerate more tension and use a static amount of tension. Once you get into security pins, tension can become more complicated, and we will get into this in future episodes.
Skillful tensioning is by far more important than skillful picking. It is a much harder skill to master but you just need to practice, practice, practice, and it will start to click one day.

It is the difficulty of quantifying tension pressure that makes it so difficult to teach or to understand. You seem to just have to feel it out for yourself. I got a lot from this. In my super limited experience, I have had better fortune when I greatly reduced what I already thought was light tension. Suddenly things improved, especially for raking but with SPP, as well. But that is for a super limited sample.
I got what you are saying and will keep it in mind for future locks. You explained your opinion very well. It will be useful.

Yes, you can. But, it is more to add security pins than make a new key since I am not sure what blank you would get or to get the correct keypins.

Learning a lot from you! Having an issue in technique I think. Can't seem to get the pick consistently into the lock due to interference from the tension tool. Especially with the top position. How far should the tension tool be inserted into the bottom or top position. I am not going to quit this process! BTW, I am right handed. Thanks for all of your teachings. I look at several of your postings everyday in my learning process.
You want it inserted just enough. Are you using picks with a tall shank height? Sometimes you need the lower shank height picks depending on the situation
To demonstrate your tension level you might place a small blob of playdoh on the tensioner.
As you press against it you will deform the playdoh. People playing along at home can do the same.
A similar amount of deformation under similar circumstances should equate to a roughly equivalent force.
Warming the playdoh in your hands first would allow people to have the material at a similar temperature.

I started picking 3 or 4 months ago and caught on quick with the practice locks then taped it up so I couldn’t see pins anymore and having a long commute (not recommended but..) I’d pick while commuting without looking and before long I could pick any master lock I could find. And then I couldn’t. I have reduced, increased , new picks . I’ve resorted to raking at times even. Making tension wrenches. What happened? Have had this happen?
Everyone vas has moments where they feel like they cant get anything open, it will pass and you will start opening locks again! Thanks for sharing
Look at the pins on the practice locks. If cheap china made, the pins are like cones and whatever you put in will open it. So not, you don't even close to pick anything, Raking and rocking is valueable skills too, but SPP is the real stuff. Get at better practice lock and start over.

Hi! I'm new to picking and think that it is something that I really want to learn. However, I'm having a terrible time. I have a Peterson pick set and a clear plastic lock to practice on. So I don't think that equipment is my problem. I have watched all of your videos and practice for one to two hours a day. I've also watched several other channels. I've tried SPP and raking. I've been able to open my lock once with each of these methods. It seems like it was just by accident that it came open. When I'm SPPing I don't seem to be able to hear a pin set. I've varied the tension and don't seem to be able to get any of the pins set. Any additional help that you could offer would be greatly appreciated.
You might be better served with using a cut away lock rather than a clear lock. The clear locks are not great to learn on.
So funny. I “accidentally” learned picking at a poker game this week. I happen to have watched a number of LPL videos and someone at the game had brought some picks & bottom keyway tensioners and locks from 2 to 6 pins to fiddle with while playing, and as a matter of coincidence-the dealer was a professional locksmith! Anyway, I was immediately able to SPP all the locks, and raking was so easy I lost all faith in locks! I was a rank noob! And still am. I didn’t have to pay any attention to binding order or oversetting. I just used pretty moderate-heavy tension and shoved what I felt were pins, going back to beginning and starting again, till the lock opened. None of the locks were clear or cut-away, just regular cores.
Im thinking of buying some picks and locks now for the heck of it and because it’s nice to be able to get into stuff when you need to…

A metal one and not a plastic one. The metal cutaway locks provide more realistic feedback

Buddy 22 Is there a possibility your lock has serrated pins in it? You can try to decrease tension and make sure you are picking the key pins and not the warding (sides of the lock).
You only need enough tension to feel for 1 binding pin.

I like Peterson lock picks but it depends where you are from
While top of the keyway tension is a must for certain locks(Such as American padlocks(As standard wrenches will slip and bind)),I find that method awkward(Perhaps because I am used to tensioning by pushing downwards on a bok wrench(As opposed to the side with a tok one))In regards to the amount of tension used,I favor medium pressure(Only use heavy tension for padlocks with stiff cylinder return springs and beveled top pins and light tension for locks containing serrated drivers) PS:It should be noted that what is “heavy” or “light” is entirely subjective,and therefore perhaps what you consider to be light tension is my idea of medium lol
Yeah, it's tough we don't have any objective measurement of the force truly used by others. It would be cool if an engineer could develop that for us someday, lol
HelpfulLockPicker Actually HPC has manufactured a spring loaded tension tool with an indicator mark which corresponds with numbers,however those numbers bear no objective indication(e.g pounds per acquire inch)as to how much pressure is truly being applied

I'm confused. If you put a tension wrench in the top of the keyway, wouldn't that be in the way of you picking the pins? I'm new and trying to understand this. Because when you pit the wrench in the top of the keyway it looks to me like its literally just blocking the way to the pins. Could someone please explain or teach me?

Hey. Just started picking, subscribed to your channel earlier this evening. Is it possible to provide top of keyway tension with a bottom of keyway tentioner? I notice that a lot of z wrenches have a short end and a long end - could you use the short end for the top of the keyway? Cheers. :o)
If it fits it fits but with top of keyway you usually need something which thicker than the typical bottom of the keyway

If you use too much tension you can bind the pins so hard they won't be easy to move. Once you get into security pins tension amount becomes variable and you need to be more careful

Those can be used as a tension wrench. But if it works, it works.

Which TOK wrench would you recommend? My set did not come with one.
You will want one in both 0.040" and and 0.050" I use the ones from Peterson (www.thinkpeterson.com) but Sparrow makes an identical set for less. If you are form Europe, check out the Multipick ones.

It is just something that takes time and practice unless you cheat and use a Lishi tool

I just had my first encounter with a shutter lock, on an older master 379atpy. it was an easy pick due to the cheap master-made wafer core, but figuring out how to work with the shutter for the first time was a nightmare.
Don't laugh; so how does one know the number of pins that will need to be picked?
You can count them with your pick or you can look at the key and assume the lock is fully pinned
