Wish all vehicles could be that simple, but with the scope, wiring diagram, scan tool and knowledge you see the problem or at least narrow it down like the way Ivan does it. Good one Ivan.
The big bend in the waveform says bad wire or bad module, since the resistance test was good, the problem is typically not in the series circuit between the Terminating Resistors, so it must be in a module that splices off in parallel to the main circuit. According to the CAN Schematic, the GPCM splices off two times so it is a great place to start the inspection, and BOOM, POS module. A quick message to all the anti-wire piercing jockeys: back probing is FAR more problematic than piercing probes! I've heard of people shorting pins to adjacent pins by putting in T-pins diagonally by accident, I've heard horror stories of 5+ hour rabbit trails on diagnostics, all because a T-pin wasn't making good contact. I have steered well clear of back probing over the years, and either front probe (gently) or wire piercing if I need the connector to be plugged in. A little liquid electrical tape or rubber sealing compound will close the hole perfectly. However, make sure you do this immediately after removing the probe, because it's very easy to forget where the hole is because it's so small.
as long as the holes are sealed afterwards. the only problem with piercing is it doesn't show if the wire to pin crimp is good(maybe bad from factory) or broken internally right against the connector body(intermittent), had that happen before, of course I figured it out by yanking on the wires while fiddling about. when I was a kid, it probably would have thrown me for a far longer loop and sometimes I still get tossed in a circle, as we all do!
Another to-the-point diagnostic, Ivan! Quick detection with a scope (can't imagine it could be fixed without seeing the bus signals, except with luck, after firing the parts canon). And the aftermarket plague strikes again :-)

Thank you for this video, I recently installed a Amazon glow plug module, an it was causing a bunch of codes losing communication with the ECM an TCM. Lol man you were right put a OEM glow plug module in. An everything works perfectly!!
I hope all the vendors offer you equipment and money to promote said equipment because you are a really good tech. You are also somehow very good about not buying new shops and lifts. You will get old fast not having a lift to help your body but I understand some people just don’t want all that. Good day Ivan

Down and dirty, done and over. Gotta love it! I just got sorta burnt with the aftermarket pcv/ oil separator valve thing on the 08 Passout. It didn’t last a day. Luckily I’m getting refunded for the pos and got the 200$ oem on the way, which was my recommendation from the start.Partly my fault being it was not electrical, thought it might work, nope! 👍👍🇺🇸
Ivan should open a school for techs to learn how to diagnose/troubleshoot vehicles, i know in my area there are hardly any techs who are well versed in that area, they are just parts swappers at this point
16:26 and I thought that was normal steering free-play... 🤣 idler arm 1st lace to look(they wear near center and start to move up and down at the drag-link end/toe constantly varies) , pitman arm 2nd place(gets slop near center) and it's guaranteed the steering box is loose as a goose. it can probably be "adjusted" very carefully in place, vs. replacing. do NOT get it too tight or bad things can happen like sudden binding when turned or damage that causes hydraulic self turning(yeah, be very careful) that said I have adjusted 30+ on vehicles with that much and more freeplay.
Glad the owner eliminated that aftermarket remote start also ! Ive done so many poor installs especially if installed on top of the factory systems ! Good the owner also now has a spare TCM ! 👍
I hope you checked the "ground" to the glow plug module. I say that after seeing the odd positive elevating signal offset at 12:34 (assuming the graph is the right direction positive = up) granted, it's very likely the junk module faulting internally and not the ground to it. (you probably checked it and I missed, or you left it off video to shorten). that smashed thumb is getting there. lol
seeing the limited amount of modules on the can circuit, I auto-assume the termination resistors are ECM and TCM. I totally guessed early on the glow plug controller was the issues. I rarely ever work on diesels, but junk-tronics are junk-tronics and diesels are not as mythical beasts as many claim. I would say they're greater mechanical beasts though, then again, with gasoline direct injection(destruction) lol, not so bad
the two tanks of gas not needed would help pay for the glow plug module. But I don't see Eric O letting you watch him work. But you could sit out front and watch the grass get cut across the street.
I seem to remember on a video a while back that Eric O. said he didn't want people coming from all over to his shop. I think he wants to stick with just his area and surrounding area.
@@Bellboy40 I think it is more likely time. His jobs seem to sit out front and he gets to them one at a time. Out of town walk ins would need to get accommodations, or travel arrangements. Or worse they find out how good his wife is at cooking and wont leave......
My dad's '89 Dodge Ram caught on fire one day. Fuel pump wire rubbed against a fuel line, and when the insulation was all gone, the resulting arc burned a hole in the fuel line. He was 50 feet from the house so he was able to get an extinguisher and save the truck! $250 total for repair including a tow 😂
I had the harness rub through and short under the back seat. You never saw someone rip it out so fast when I saw the smoke..... Ended up soldering 9 wires, cut the melted ones so I could put on shrink tubing. and doubled up on the loom. Lasted another 18 years. Worst short I even had was the battery cable ran through the frame and rubbed through. Now THAT was a fireworks show. Bolt cutters in the trunk saved the day as a quick disconnect.
The little 2 channel pico 2000 series is only $125. They are lower resolution, and less buffer, but to learn the price is right. Got the AWS wave amp clamp (pico clone). Transducer will not be in my near future. 😒 I just watch eric O use one of those chinese $8 scopes with a pico amp clamp. LOL But under the glove box, it fits better than the lab scope and laptop just to see the blower motor spin.....

But what do you expect for the money. I needed a peak to peak measurement my 50 year old analog scope was incapable of getting me easily. They are now doing two channel ones. Think in the $40 range. Didn't pay attention wanted the pico to record the waveform. It just shocked me when Eric O pulled it out to verify the diagnosis of bad blower motor commutator winding. Bonus Post: It didn't. 😏
Nice easy diag with the scope again. A little bit lucky that the bad module wasn't one of the ends of the bus with the terminating resistor, but that would've just needed the decade box to finish the diagnosis (or a 120 ohm resistor, which Ivan probably keeps in stock just in case).
watched an interesting british channel. He disconnected one wire, and just used half the can, car still ran, high or low can only. Think he grounded the can bus wire to remove it.
I had a 05 Dmax 3500. Biggest POS ever! Had 30 plus issues in the first 18,000 miles. No rhyme or reason. Dash issues, paint issues, power seat issues, u-joints, carrier bearing, glow plugs, injectors, grounds, etc. Traded it for the dreaded 6.0 F350, 2006 model, and drove it for 107,000 miles with the only maintenance other than brakes, oil, batteries was a steering rack replaced.
Sad. Would be interesting to know if the customer had filed a fire claim with his insurance under comprehensive. If he did, the repairs should have included all OEM parts.
OK, very cumbersome and time consuming, but you could diagnose this truck even w/o a scope. Unplug the modules from the CAN one by one and see when the problem (thrown codes) disappears. I always wanted a scope, but I could never convince myself to spend $10k on a nice Tektronix scope (I assume the Pico costs less).
Block heater started a fire? I figured you were going to say the owner got frustrated with the truck and decided to wash it down with gasoline and dry it off with matches.
😂😂😂😂😂 very very true......had a throttle body fire on a customer car a few years ago at work. I knew just crank the eng over and it'll go out. My overzealous know-it-all service mgr comes running over and drenched the entire eng bay w a powder fire extinguisher. That crap was EVERYWHERE !!!! Hell, it took me several times longer to clean up that mess, than the original repair. MAJOR MAJOR mess!!!!!!!
The unfortunate part is the glow plug module has been obsolete from Gm for several years now for the LLY. It’s hard to even find these junk aftermarket units too.
CANNOT BE SAID LOUD ENOUGH: Highly technical diagnostics SHALL BE charged at a much higher labor rate than changing oil and tires. Might we offer that today diagnostics takes 5x longer than the actual repair. That 50 years ago repair required relatively NO or only minor diagnostics as repairs were generally simple to determine. Alternator, Starter, Battery, TuneUp, Compressor, Shocks,.Brakes, Transmission, Engine.
My daughter Chevy equinox had a bad electronic EGR valve how come that stop some of the drive cycle monitoring not set they all fully set after a new EGR valve was installed
4 minutes in and I am guessing remote start system tapped into bus network somehow and cause a ruckus when it left the chat. As with most PHAD adventures we never know what we will find in the end.
No chance....a remote start only ties into the purple J1850 wire at the OBD2 and as long as it was a quality brand like Compustar/Idatalink and IF it was installed correctly, it would absolutely not cause any issues.
The 4/8 channel pico is way too expensive for the average car owner who only sometimes works on his own stuff. Any suggestions for less expensive equipment?
What was the last thing that you did to this truck before you started seeing these problems? I replaced the glow plug module with an Amazon knockoff unit. So, you then you decided to replace the TCM? Yuup.....

Hey Ivan, what's the cheapest model of picoscope that I can get away with? Of course that would also work with your pressure transducer. I notice they have a lot of models that are significantly cheaper than the ones labeled for automotive use and was wondering if any of those would still get by?
OEM vs aftermarket has been a hot topic in the breakroom. Some say save some money and that OEM is not necessary. I say another poop part bites the owner. Listen to Ivan and buy quality parts.
You can buy aftermarket as long as it's from a reputable manufacturer like Bosch, Denso or Delphi for example. You just have to be aware that there are fakes out there. Just don't buy anything that is completely noname, that's mostly garbage.
There needs to be a national database for true "Ivan Level" diagnostic specialists so those of us from other regions can get reliable diagnostics. Too many auto repair shops are using the Parts Cannon method. With repair costs going through the roof these days process of elimination via parts is not feasible.
there's a Block heater Bold that gets burnt and causes engine fire there's a replacement part recommended to get this is a know issue with these engines this is a issue where a screw liyyery gets eating away at 50 thousand-100 thousand miles unless you tighten that screw it works lose and sparks and gets eating literally
I catch a great amount of flack from my co-workers about using OEM parts especially on my 30 year-old car. I recently blew the EGR cooler out of my Excursion and apparently those are on indefinite back-order. I told the guy doing the work I will not accept anything but OEM parts. The body was off the frame and he finally found one. You should have adjusted that steering box so there wasn't that much play. (If that was the issue; the linkage could have been worn. I think those have a Saginaw steering box. GREAT VIDEO!
Cheap parts offer many great lessons. I had a Cruze diesel before that would intermittently set communication codes It ended up being a cheap “OEM” NOX sensor bought online that the customer had installed. It was missing the terminating resistor inside the sensor module.
Yes Lots of Chinesiem Garbage floating around on the Net including EBAY by the way, If the said Electronic part is WAY cheaper than you know your getting Screwed for real, Some of these parts even have OEM copied LABELS on the packaging, I thought I was buying old stock instead, The lying seller even said it was an Original Equipment Manufacturer Part, I instead Ended up with PURE useless 💩 for a crankshaft position sensor, End of Complaint.

OE module was Beru made for my 2004 and Standard brand through many outlets were just re-boxed Beru modules but cheaper than dealer.
Neither is available currently 😢

4 minutes in and I am guessing remote start system tapped into bus network somehow and cause a ruckus when it left the chat. As with most PHAD adventures we never know what we will find in the end.
No chance....a remote start only ties into the purple J1850 wire at the OBD2 and as long as it was a quality brand like Compustar/Idatalink and IF it was installed correctly, it would absolutely not cause any issues.
That high bias voltage was module yelling in chinese.
The 4/8 channel pico is way too expensive for the average car owner who only sometimes works on his own stuff. Any suggestions for less expensive equipment?

OEM vs aftermarket has been a hot topic in the breakroom. Some say save some money and that OEM is not necessary. I say another poop part bites the owner. Listen to Ivan and buy quality parts.
You can buy aftermarket as long as it's from a reputable manufacturer like Bosch, Denso or Delphi for example. You just have to be aware that there are fakes out there.
Just don't buy anything that is completely noname, that's mostly garbage.
There needs to be a national database for true "Ivan Level" diagnostic specialists so those of us from other regions can get reliable diagnostics. Too many auto repair shops are using the Parts Cannon method. With repair costs going through the roof these days process of elimination via parts is not feasible.

there's a Block heater Bold that gets burnt and causes engine fire there's a replacement part recommended to get this is a know issue with these engines this is a issue where a screw liyyery gets eating away at 50 thousand-100 thousand miles unless you tighten that screw it works lose and sparks and gets eating literally
sounds like blue thread lock is needed.
I catch a great amount of flack from my co-workers about using OEM parts especially on my 30 year-old car. I recently blew the EGR cooler out of my Excursion and apparently those are on indefinite back-order. I told the guy doing the work I will not accept anything but OEM parts. The body was off the frame and he finally found one. You should have adjusted that steering box so there wasn't that much play. (If that was the issue; the linkage could have been worn. I think those have a Saginaw steering box. GREAT VIDEO!

It ended up being a cheap “OEM” NOX sensor bought online that the customer had installed. It was missing the terminating resistor inside the sensor module.

Yes Lots of Chinesiem Garbage floating around on the Net including EBAY by the way, If the said Electronic part is WAY cheaper than you know your getting Screwed for real, Some of these parts even have OEM copied LABELS on the packaging, I thought I was buying old stock instead, The lying seller even said it was an Original Equipment Manufacturer Part, I instead Ended up with PURE useless 💩 for a crankshaft position sensor, End of Complaint.
