Waiata a ringa from Muriwhenua at 2021 Te Taitokerau Haka Ngahau, in Whangārei.
A traditional kapa haka performance (bracket) consists of at least 6, or 7 items.
Groups have the option to perform a Waiata Tira, as a well as a compulsory whakaeke, mōteatea, poi, waiata a ringa, haka, and whakawātea.
Whakaeke: entrance; entering the stage | Moteatea, pātere or waiata tawhito; traditional waiata, lament | Waiata a ringa: a song with appropriate actions | Poi: an item with poi | Haka: a haka where the tāne (men) come to the front | Whakawātea: exit; exiting the stage | Waiata Tira: choral.

1st time I've seen a bass guitar on stage and man it added so much to it. Especially being there in person - the bass echoed the whole stadium meke as 🔥

I agree. I can't see why the judges within the Te Matatini framework can't see the hypocrisy in penalising groups like Te Reanga Morehu o Rātana for using brass instruments like they did last festival, citing rules like it's not traditional when the bloody guitar isn't either.
Poi E didn't hit number one cos it was traditional in sound. And nor would it have. This waiata-a-ringa was my favorite item out of the entire haka ngahau performances.
