  • In this video, I show you guys how I achieve Eddie Van Halen's iconic guitar tone, using the Mooer Pitch Box. This pedal is great for those that love to play the tunes from the Sammy Hagar (Van Hagar) years of Van Halen!
    During the 90s, Eddie used several Eventide rack mount harmonizers to capture his huge stereo sound, especially on albums like "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge" and "Balance" I have always love this tone and wanted to find a way to capture it on a budget. I have to say that I think this pedal does a pretty great job! What did you guys think of this tone?!

    problem I have is when you ONLY detune, you have an average pitch that is LOWER than it should be. What you need is a pitch that goes both below and above the input signal so the average output is in tune. That's prob how many pedals do it anyway. Sounds nice by itself but detuning will be flat, going +2 would be sharp but hey, who cares, right?

You can't beat the price $58 new!!! Thanks for the tip!!! It is amazingly pristine sounding and does not muddy up the mix or cause drops in the signal chain on the pedalboard. I'm hoping I can do this with the Harmony, as well. Should work. I researched it.
    On the Mooer Pitch Box in Detune mode, the knob changes 5 cents each click, so -2 is the same as -5 cents.
    On the Hotone Harmony in Detune mode, the knob works the same, but the numbers range from 1-24, and it doesn't have negatives. But, in Detune, 6 is 0. So, putting it on 4 should detune it 10 cents...the same as the Pitch Box on -2.
    And the Hotone Harmony is about half the price, and half the size as the Mooer Pitch Box lol. Hotones are great quality, as well.

    Hey Jake. I've been playing guitar for about 47 years now. I appreciate the review of this pedal. The advice I give to most new guitarists is experiment to find the sound _you_ like. Eddie VH didn't simply settle for the "brown" sound. If you're in a cover band, emulating other guitarists tones is important if your band is going for "realism", especially in tribute bands. Just realize that cover bands are fun, but you're always copying what somebody else did. It's almost like you're a painter and all you do is paint what's already been painted by somebody else. Eddie didn't want to do that, which is the reason his approach to covers was drastically different from the originals. He did "the Van Halen" version of it. We call them "remakes" instead of "covers". Keep on keeping on. And remember, if at first you don't succeed, so much for skydiving!

    • @mickeyguide3112
      @mickeyguide3112 4 роки тому

      True, but I think it's good to have some reference. By trying to copy some sound you'll end up getting your own sound cause it's almost impossible to copy something precisely unless you have that exact gear. This review is good and though detune definetly is a Van Halen thing many other players used that too specially in the late 80's /early 90's. Besides soundwise everything has been done already, it's more like what you do with that sound to make it sound like you, your own phrasing, melodies, vibrato etc...

      It's as if rehashing is ALL that players and listeners care about anymore. We went from Van Halen clones in the 80s to Black Sabbath clones for the last THREE decades!!!

    Hey, I read (about 2yrs ago) that EVH doesn't have a Brown sound. He says that Alex had a drum that sounded like he was hitting a log "thud". And EVH thought that it was organic which made him think of Brown. Thus EVH referred to that drum as the Brown sound. You can find it in an interview. It might even be in the top few of a google search. Peace - ChrisG

    It works even better if you runs stereo pedal before the mooer, and run your direct signal to one amp and the mooer out to another amp.

  • @capsuleboy
    @capsuleboy 3 роки тому

    I was checking that in my gt10, but on accoustic patches. Anyway, everytime somebody tells me detune I say 2 things,
    1) Use chorus and that is it, you will get your sound.. as simple as that, since you have the original signal and a bit of detune.
    2) yestarday I was checking other options to get a detune and I found pitch shifter as a good option since you have the original signal and a copy of it, but move the knob FINE to -11 or more and you will start to feel exactly like you show in your video..

    I've always caught so much shit from people for actually preferring the Van Hagar sound compared to Eddie's classic tone. Don't get me wrong, I love the classic jose modded marshall into a variac tone from those albums, but there was always something special to me about his Van Hagar era tone, especially the 5150 era, or an even better example would be the tone he got on Live without a Net. The sounds he got when he finger picks the intro to summer nights, or the main riff to Best of Both Worlds, just two examples. The tone just sounds so fucking massive and so musical to the ears. I always assumed it was chorus, but chorus oscillates whereas a detune really doesn't. I discovered much later that it was really about running eventide rack mount harmonizer units, plus he was doing a wet/dry/wet cab mix and all sorts of stuff. This little pedal though really does get you into the ballpark of that sound, pretty neat.

    Was gonna get this for the bass, but not everyone was carrying them and the price was a bit high for something that was mostly only good on detune. So getting 2 of the Donner Harmonic Square 7 as it is good on all it does. I will use one as an octave and the other as detune for the most part. Nonetheless, this mooer pedal is really nice for detune.
