- Mika Salo with a tremendous lap in third practice session in Monte Carlo 1998. He was fastest for a while and only got beaten by Mika Häkkinen in the last few seconds of the session.

That Arrows looks 👌
Peak backmarker livery
@@Eeter26 What about Renault in the testing days? But yeah, you right. At least Minardi had some colors apart from black.
It's great, at first glance i thought, arrows simply bought ferrari's f310 body
The all-black looks intimidating. Love it!
One of my favourite f1 cars ever.
One of the most underrated drivers there ever was...
Yes!
Salo is at 55th place according to this TOP 100 model: f1metrics.wordpress.com/2019/11/22/the-f1metrics-top-100/
Mika Salo was one hell of a driver. People forget he should have won only his second race for Ferrari in '99.
He was pretty much right up Mika Hakkinen's gearbox for the first 23 laps so nobody can say he wasn't a good racer. In an alternative reality where Eddie Irvine's Ferrari would have retired from the (inherited) lead Mika Salo would have won his 2nd ever race for Ferrari (and in the end Salo giving up his position for Irvine still didn't win Irvine the title so it was for naught).
Salo's 10 points DID however help Ferrari win the 1999 constructors' championship since Ferrari won it with 128 points to McLaren's 124 (just 4 points more which came courtesy of Salo's 10 points).
@@paulallen8109 Why didn't Ferrari give him a chance next year?
@@Bruh-jr2ep Barichello was already signed, Salo got the Sauber drive but I'm not sure if that was Ferrari influenced.
@@Bruh-jr2ep Salo was 33 as well back in 1999, so he was overlooked by some teams
But what happened the next race at the Hungaroring where driving is more prevalent than engine power..? Mika Salo was good but not great, certainly not better than the likes of Villeneuve, Barichello, Frentzen, Fisichella, Alesi...
mika salo must have been one of the best drivers never got a real chance to drive for a good team (i know he drove a few races for ferrari in 1999 but still he never had a contract)
When he filled in for Schumacher at Ferrari he was straight away on the pace of Irvine. Deserved a contract for 2000.
When at Ferrari he slowed to allow Irvine to win a race.
@@FormulaOneFan98
they had done contract for Rubens before Schumacher's accident, so they couldn't hire Salo, though they wanted to. Another issue was that Arrows didn't want to let go of Salo that easy. it was all contract issues of the time (Salo told this in interviews years later).
@@FormulaOneFan98 that's an exaggeration. He did a solid job, but was only really competitive at Hockenheim and Monza (he deserved the win at Hockenheim tbf).
@@Cynderfan35 How did Arrows still have a hold over him in 1999? They didn't keep him on after 1998.
What a beautiful car!
It was such a stunning car and livery.
Ah, poor Mika Salo. A really good driver that never got a proper shot with a better funded team. Definitely a championship contender had he gotten a contract either of the top teams.
He should have tried Indycars around 2000 or so. Drivers like Zanardi and Moreno never got a fair shot in F1 but did really well in Indycars. Zanardi won the 1997 and 1998 CART title whereas Moreno finished a good 3rd in the 2000 CART title merely 19 points championship winner Gil de Ferran. When Salo finally DID try Indycars in 2003 he got the chance for just 4 races at the end of the season with the new PK Racing team but still finished a great 3rd in his second ever race at Miami. None of the other four PK Racing drivers ever finished on the podium.
Real pity Nokia sponsorship money stopped supporting him (and Tyrrell) after 1995 because he might have been picked up either by better teams or made Tyrrell able to purchase a good Mugen Honda engine.
BAR should have signed him to drive alongside Jenson Button in 2003 (and fired Villeneuve) or Toyota should have kept him for 2003 rather than signing Christiano da Matta (or the overrated Olivier Panis).
Aside from his 6 race long stint at Ferrari as Schumacher's stand-in the rest of 110 GP long career were for hopeless backmarker teams like Lotus (in its final season before bankruptcy in 1994), Tyrrell and Arrows (both of which struggled to stay afloat), BAR in 1999 (0 points) and Toyota in its 2002 debut season.
@@paulallen8109 Zanardi? He was very poor with the decent Williams... No match for Ralf Schumacher.. IMO there were many drivers of similar talent to Salo.. Take Diniz, pay driver, on a couple of tenths behind Salo at the qualifying of Monte Carlo 1998..
Well he had to give a win away to Irvine when he was covering for Schumacher!! Could have easily replaced Irvine for 2000, if not for Barrichello.
Man, that's a beautiful car I must say.
Mika Salo was so underrated
Mika was always the underdog next to that other Mika. Happy though that that he picked a couple of podiums when got a chance on Ferrari.
He even should have won the Germany GP if was not a order to let Eddie Irvine pass. Very fast drive, never had a car to compete and I don't know why. He have two victories on Le Mans with GT car.
@@rodrigomendes3327 as a Finn I have read some history about him and it says that while he really was most promising drivers along Hakki and Schumi he was arrested for drunk driving when he was driving in lower series and I believe that this mistake caused a flaw for his reputation at least he did have to wait longer time to get F1.
@@Catinkontti It makes a lot of sense and I heard something like that too.
that year Arrows was technically a full fledged constructor
The Bridgestone tyre also must have been pretty insane in that GP.
Only 1 car (Irvine) out of the top 6 finishers wore Goodyear. Both Arrows scored points btw.
But still impressive how he manages to claim P1 (vs a Bridgestone McLaren) with more than 10 kp/h slower on the straights.
*km/h
The commentator actually said that the Bridgestone tyres had more grip than the Arrows could take advantage of as it was so underpowered
Mika Salo made a fantastic weekend in that Monaco GP 1998: 8th in the qualifying and he finished the race in fourth position (between Irvine third and Villeneuve fifth...) with an Arrows!
Damon Hill propelled that team. The improvement they made from the start of 1997 was astonishing. Their 1998 car wasnt half bad (when it worked), and DH had alot to do with their giant leap forwards. They began going backwards again in 1999
Likeable guy. Good driver.
Legendary lap
That all black livery was sharp.
COULTHARD: Well, at least this is the last time I get stuck behind an Arrows at this damn track.
ENRIQUE BERNOLDI, 3 YEARS LATER: I'm going to Petrov this guy's entire career.
Ha ha ha ha ha XD
Arrows Hart V10 . Geil !!!!
Not a question if it would break but when it would break
Und wahrgenommen wie cool der Arrows 1998 eigentlich aussah hab ich auch erst jetzt xD
"The gp of Montecarlo proved the effectiveness of the chassis" (cit.)
Those were the days when F1 cars looked the part. I miss the old teams .
F**king love the cars from that era
Pra mim o carro mais bonito da história da f1
1:05 a 1:11 Que belo ângulo de câmera, Incrível !, Arrows preta está linda 🏎🥰❤️
Great weekend for arrows, p4 and p6
This race showed how good that car was, it just struggled with a massively underpowered engine (as did many other Arrows from the TWR era minus the A21), Salo finished 4th and Diniz was 6th at Monaco. John Barnard made a good car but the engine massively let it down.
An absolute stunner of a car
This is the most commendable piece of F1 content put on UA-cam I've seen.
Mika Salo's race results at Monaco in poor cars are pretty amazing:
1996: 5th in the Tyrrell
1997: 5th in the Tyrrell
1998: 4th in the Arrows
2000: 5th in the Sauber
This shows his true potential as a driver. On a track where bad car performance didn't have so much impact, Salo often delivered!
Amazing look! You can clearly here the engine revving lower
Mika kola is one of the bestvunderrated drivers..remember argentina 95
Whatever Mika Kola is, I'd drink it.
That would be a great brand name for a finnish energy drink
In that year 1998, Mika Häkkinen did win the race and Mika Salo was 4 🤘😎 Great drivers #TeamFinland🇫🇮
Peugeot should had bought Arrows that year, and keep supplying Jordan at no cost. Stupid managing of Peugeot Sport or board executives or a combo of those two factors
the sound in the tunnel is amazing!!!
Trivia: Back in 1996 Schumacher was asked to name the best 5 drivers of his competitors for the 1996 season. Mika Salo was one of those five drivers. It's a pity Salo didn't switch to Indycars sooner because he might have been another Zanardi or Moreno - i.e. somebody good who never got his chance for a full season F1 drive but did really well in Indycars. That being said he still finished on the podium (3rd) in his second ever Indycar start at Miami in 2003. Had he gone to Indycar in 2000 or so he might have done well.
Salo was fast in these slow cars, very under appreciated driver.
I know black cars these days are common but to see one in the 90s was a rarity, one of my faves
Lovely looking F1 car.
The cars especially the Arrows look ace!
The best looking F1 car ever made.
What a beautiful car
Love this car!!!
Someone is going to have to explain to me how that car got over 350 kph at Monza while down nearly 80 HP from the top teams? Chassis must have been quite amazing...
1:10 Sound ❤️
Smooth driving!
Funny that Senna's pole lap from a decade earlier is literally 2 seconds faster than this. Think about it, the MP4/4, a V6 turbo engine with a manual, could've qualified in midefield or above in a 1998 grid filled with the blistering V10s despite the technology being outdated by that point. Heck, he'd probably keep up with them and even get in an overtake or 2 during the race.
Goes to show how iconic Senna was for his time, mans was just naturally quick and showed no fear in pushing his cars over the limit if necessary.
Are you an idiot or what...? Those 1998 spec cars had the width reduced to 1.8m and they had those rubbish grooved tyres. Quickest cars were 1991 ones with qualies tyres.
Monaco changed a bit in the layout, so the track is naturally faster then in 1998. But still crazy they drive now times around 1.10. and Salo did a 1.23.
The 98 Arrows was one of the top 3 best looking cars from that year along with the McLaren and the Jordan. But then most of the cars looked good that year.
Keep it up! Many thanks!
Arrows always built good chassis. Hill second the previous year @ Hungary, a chassis circuit. Problem was the engines. Yamaha was dreadful and they decided to build their own engines In 98 and 99. On a tiny budget the top speeds were over 15mph slower at the lower circuits
Not Hart engine?
@@questaebenzinah2600 tom walkinshaw had bought Hart so you're right
The best look arrows beauty y beast❤❤
If he could get a good car he could have been champion. He was one hell of a racer!
Great livery, likable driver
Damn imagine this Arrows chassis with a 97 Renault engine that woulda been sick
Damn, that Arrows Mecachrome would have been a podium finisher several times...Maybe even with Diniz.
@@VinsUplifting Albeit relatively unreliable.
ARROWS CAR BEATIFUL

Black team Arrows is 🔝 design ❕👍
0:00~0:31 V10
0:32~0:35 V8
0:36~2:20 V10
No V8 in 1998
S2 on fire
Nice danka zepter arrows :)
That chassis was good. The problem was the engine
Could also be the case that their car was too draggy from an inefficient aero design.
A C Nope the Hart engine was close to 100 HP down on the top teams...
Times that it never will happen in f1 actually
Good old Arrow team...
He finished 4th in this race (without pitting, if my memory serves right)
That was 1996...
@@raulinurmikumpu8878 in 1996 he crashed with Hakkinen and Irvine
I don't know where he was classified
Hatten die nicht den Motor selber gebaut?
Der Motor entstand vom Motorenentwickler Brian Hart.
That Arrows was shait,. but he was P4 IN THE RACE even
And sixth too, because Diniz survived assasination, when lapped Schumacher tried to unlap himself from Diniz, spun and nearly took him off, but Diniz survived and finished sixth. So infact both Arrows in the points (their first and last of the season)
@@AlejjSi Schumacher actually sacrificed his car and hit the barrier to avoid Diniz, that was a nice gesture from the German...
why there isn't the f1digital+ graphic?
Cause it had been introduced in 1999.
Ok, i don't think it is that big a stretch to say that 1998 Arrows had the best chassis of the season...
Do you have some completed sessions from DF1?
Great car with a gutless engine
Hell, even if they put a 97 Renault on the back of this thing it would be a top 4 car
Definitively a driver that deserved a lot more luck. Less than an half a season with a Ferrari and he could have won 2 races.
Porquê a Fia , não deixou os carros com esse desenho e estética? Até essa época pareciam carros de corrida , hoje em dia parecem uns tranformers....horriveis
Whose car is there at 0:30? Is that a Williams or even a Ferrari?
It looks like a Ferrari to me.
Really cool looking car even if it was a dog
And in 2019 pole lap was 1:10 😯
the track has changed often since then
One of (if not) the best F1 cars ever designed!
I think I prefer the 1997 Arrows a little more.
Gigidag77 The A18 had nice colouring, the white and blue but l loved when you stood behind the A19 that it had high upswept side pods with large cooling vents.
This arrows looks so cool! New 2019 and 2020 cars look ugly. F1 has totally lost it all. Cars are ugly, sounds are horrible, races are boring and theres only few real battles on whole season. Only thing that its important is saving tyres and fuel. Its just stupid
If only that car had a proper engine ......
You wanna Winn? Get a Finn.
BRIDGESTONE TYRES THE BEST!!!
цвет чёткий
Einem merde schulusssector!
the slowest car from 1998 was been 5 seconds faster, than the fastest 2019 F1-Mercedes.
WTF?
That Arrows looks abd sounds the business.
