  • Arena Presents Tales of Rock 'N' Roll - Peggy Sue (1993)
    The 1st part of BBC Arena's Tales of Rock 'N' Roll series that looks into Buddy Holly's 1957 recording Peggy Sue (amongst other things!)
    Peggy Sue Gerron Rackham tells how Buddy Holly's songs Peggy Sue and Peggy Sue Got Married came to be written. She went to the same high school as Holly and married drummer Jerry Allison. Other people recall the era, including Donna Fox who inspired Ritchie Valens' song, Donna.
    There are also insights into Peggy Sue's business venture where she runs a drain clearing company called Rapid Rooter in Sacramento California, the producers seem to take quite a bit of interest(?!) in this because they make a lot of referrals to this fact including capturing someone testing the flushing of their toilet!
    NOTE: A fair bit of film is re-used in this programme from the 1985 Arena episode "The Real Buddy Holly Story" including the interviews and drumming demonstrations from Jerry Allison (he was never interviewed for this programme) but are of good relevance to the documentary concerned.

    My mom took that graduation photo! To my mom it was just a portrait photographer gig, she didn't care about either rock & roll or celebrity status. She did like Peggy Sue as a person and Peggy Sue appreciated the fact that someone liked her for who she was, and not because she was a celebrity. They kept in touch for many years.

      La Bamba is not completely accurate. Richie was not scared to fly and I am sure they took other liberties maybe not big ones but some other liberties like times and things. However, It is still a good movie and yes very sad I feel so sad for Donna. Imagine had he lived they might be married with kids today, on the one hand, she has the song but on the other hand, all she has of the boy she once loved is a song. Depends on how you look at it or if you're a glass half empty or glass half full type of person.

This was also the first documentary program I saw related to Buddy Holly and this was also the first program that includes archive film of him that I saw for the first time in my childhood. • @aprildannettegosa5381
      @aprildannettegosa5381 5 років тому +1

      Dona Ludwig wore ponytails too like the actress in the movie so it was hard to tell. Besides the movie captured the heart of the story. Yes, they did get some things wrong and take liberties. But overall they did it right I would be more picky about the fact that Richie Valens was not scared to fly then I would be of Donna's hair as long as they got the coin toss between Richie and Alsup right. Because that is a key fact that cannot be screwed up. Or the fact of BIG BOPPER having the flu or the drummer having frostbite. Because that was the reason a seat was available on Buddy's plane to start with his drummer got frostbite in his toe from the bus freezing. So not only was the frostbite crucial to JP (BOPPER) being on the plane. it wasalso a huge reason Buddy Holly even got the plane. so as long as they get those facts straight the tiny things don't matter to me as a viewer.

      It bothers me when movies take liberties with peoples life story that are crucial to their lives..not hair colors and stuff like thwt but flipping a coin for a spot on a doomed plane, thats crucial. I jave heard recently dions story has changed about the coin flip and who was actually sick with the flu..that it was bopper not valens..if i could go back and look at certain moments in time i would want to peak in on that night and see what happened to place certains on the plane and certains on the bus.

      Dion is the most important and underappreciated living legend of the very first wave of rockers still alive and well, and amazingly still making admittedly less-awesome but still decent music to this very day. I love Dion, I love his whole "I'm a fockin' teetotaling asshole from da Bronx and nobody fockin' appreciates my legendary status but ayyyy it's all good with Jesus but what the fock aw yoo fockin' peephole thinkin not worshippin me" vibe he's got goin on.
      That said, he may have made all that shit up for extremely unclear reasons. Sometimes guys with the least need to feel insecure about themselves & their legacy, feel the most insecure about themselves and their legacy, and while that's what motivates them to greatness, it also plagues them and warps their judgement. Is that him? Dunno, possibly, I have a hard time believing those country dolts from Buddy's B-team even had the wherewithal and capacity to understand the temptation to be untruthful, so that means for me that they're probably not randomly lying, so does that mean Dion is bullshit? Idk. Maybe coins were flippin' & flyin' around all over the fuckin place shimmering spinning around in the air & smackin' the backs of rockabilly mitts, spelling all sorts of terrible doom & disaster v. legendary narrow escape for all sorts of A-side rockers, undercard talent, all the way on down to the trumpet player for all we know. Somehow, I doubt very seriously that that scenario occurred, and tend to think odds set with one coin toss having happened, and that means it's simply who you believe v. Who is fulla shit.

      Maybe because they were still wrapped up in all of the emotion that was involved at the time, when that happened probably everything in life just stopped for them both.
      Although Peggy Sue married the drummer of The Crickets and Buddy Holly married Maria Elena I think she still had a huge soft spot for him, back then and at the time of filming of this program.
      In the scene before the credits roll at the end you can see that she visits his grave where he is buried and puts flowers down there for him, and lovely scene where the sun is slowly setting in.

    The song Donna was not really inspired by her. The song was originally written for a girl called Mercy. It was written by Conrad "Nino" Jones, and one of the other boys of Ritchie's group The Sillouhettes. Conrad was said to be the one who had the idea of writing the song because he had a huge crush on that young lady Mercy who was said to be the sister of one of the group members. Donna wasn't attracted to Ritchie, many were interviewed and an author got their stories. Some of Ritchie's friends even said that she was using him. She started liking him when he got famous; when that song came out. There's so much more to tell. I was very disappointed when I learned the truth. La Bamba was way too dressed up. It was Hollywoodnized too much. Even Ritchie's aunt said the movie was 80% inaccurate. Donna came from a racist family, and it rubbed off on her too. I don't like her. At least all of these years later she admitted that she didn't love Ritchie, nor was she in love with him, and she said the actress who played her was nothing like how she is for real.

    • @darcandelaria
      @darcandelaria 5 років тому +4

      Really wow that's sad! How could she not be in love with Ritchie? She said that she never loved him? That's difficult to believe since he was so handsome and seemed like such a sweet kid! That song alone would make any girl fall in love! Too bad! He deserved a girl better than her then.

      Not true ,Donna isn’t racist ,her father was and didn’t want her seeing him !not her fault ,what she says is she was very fond of him and thought he was such a nice guy and wished her father had gotten to know him and given him a chance , but at fifteen she was just a kid who didn’t know what love is .Her father all of a sudden became interested in RV after he died because Donna put his family on the map !! And talked her into recording a song as he thought it would bring in fame and $$$ ,it being offered to her post accident ,once the industry realized who she was ,they wanted to capitalize on her ! She detested this and was furious at her father ,and i don’t think they ever made up .She says right here his death REALLY affected her !! So get your facts straight .Richie wrote this to her to express his sadness over her father not letting her see him !!

    I think Donna likely had Valens friend-zoned, to use the parlance of recent years. She was only 15, and had every right to do as she wished with whomever she wished, maybe was not ready for all that Valens was looking for, which was a wife, in all probability.
    Its possible Donna hardly even knew Ritchie by the the time he left us. There are many exploitative and awkward press photo spreads of a poorly-sullen-acting, unintentionally bored looking Donna Ludwig, cringily clutching various goofy items in the wake of Valens' death.
    Perhaps it was her father's doing, maybe she enjoyed the attention, in fact I would bet it all that she damn well loved it quietly, and had embarrassing dreams of getting "discovered" from all those fake-sad press photos and articles about the "real Donna" from after the tragedy.
    In any case, one gets the feeling she didnt know Valens nearly as much as has been believed from the way she talks like they were great friends, yet peculiarly barely can recite a single specific... anything...about the young man. "He was nice, he liked things, he liked guitar, tacos." Thats my impression of her response to what Ritchie was like. Yet imagine how awkward that would be if you were her, and you knew you hardly knew him, but now your weirdo dad is calling all the newspapers, pitching a story about the "real YOU" in an attempt to cash-in on this guy's brutal and horrific death, all while you secretly adore the attention and though protesting against your father, you quietly hope to god je will keep those press fellas showing up with flash bulbs & goofy awkward shit to clutch while looking bored and pouty-sad, and hope it makes you a movie star, while also trying to remember literally anything at all about a guy who had a big crush on you, but whom you barely knew beyond the basic plain details from the dozen short chats and second-base sessions shared as you realized he was going to be famous and swiftly moved to make em yours, only to realize you actually couldn't force yourself to like/love him, regardless of his rising status and yournown insatiable thirst for attention. Complex and difficult time for poor Doney.
