I love Mrs. Holley's voice. And Buddy's brother? My lord, you can hear the respect in his voice when he says "momma" and "daddy". The guy is full-grown man and still refers to his parents like that. That is awesome. That is some down-home, real American folk right there. This is the America I miss.
I have loved and been obsessed with Buddy Holly since I was a kid. Years ago I heard The Apartment Tapes, for the first time, and my admiration and love for him went to the moon. What a beautiful and brilliant guy and one can only imagine what he would have done.
And if you think about it! . . . . .his songs that we all know and love were really only heard a few times by him (Buddy) unaware of the enormity and importance throughout the music world and beyond.
Buddy passed 11 years before I was born, but Ive always been a fan. What a sad way to find out a loved one especially your child has passed away. Mrs. Holly had such a sweet, gentle voice. R.I.P Buddy.💖💔
The people my heart breaks for are these poor families buddy had brothers and a sister a Mother a Father same with the rest. Imagine a loved one there one minute and gone the next. Makes me cry on so many levels.
My favorite song is "True Love Ways". I could listen to that over and over. Also, because my name is Maria Elena, I feel a connection. Call me weird. =)
Such lovely, courageous and gracious people. I'm a huge fan who is brokenhearted about all this, and I hadn't even been born yet when the plane went down! I can't imagine how they must have suffered.
@@whitesidewalls You met his family in Lubbock? How was the family? They seem like a nice family and very respectful. Did they still live in the same house after buddy past?
I met them twice in Lubbock, in November 1979 and June 1980. They were some of the sweetest people I have ever met. I don't believe it was the same house Buddy grew up in.
His brother sounds exactly like him. It is is because of this incident that laws were put into place to ensure that the identity of anyone fatally injured is not released before the families of victims are notified. Prior to this, victim information was freely disseminated in the media without regard to family privacy or proper notification of victims. Still photos and newsfilm of the crash site and debris field showing the victims have been published since 2/3/59 and are posted profusely elsewhere on YT. As for the crash itself, the plane was in reality descending rather than climbing due to how the instruments displayed. The pilot WAS NOT certified for instrument flight. At the point of impact, it was estimated that the plane hit the ground at 150 mph. Except for the pilot, the three occupants were ejected on impact and killed instantly. The pilot was found completely entangled within the wreckage. Supposedly, the plane still exists, hidden away by the owner of the charter service after the investigation. The FAA report on the crash remains the most requested report in history. Summaries and facsimiles of the report including post mortem examinations have been published in various books on Holly over the years.
I WISH IN A WAY THAT BUDDY HAD LIVED TO MAKE ALOT OF MONEY SO HE COULD HAVE TAKEN CARE OF HIS PARENTS AS THEY SEEM TO BE REAL NICE PEOPLE. GOD BLESS THEM.
Buddy’s wife Maria Elena signed legal documents to give buddy’s half of buddy’s royalties to buddy’s parents. They made several millions from the royalties. People say what they will about maria Elena but buddy loved her dearly and she didn’t have to give the parents anything
The blame should be placed solely on the promoters who didn't have a proper bus that was warm enough for these guys to tour in. Had they had a proper bus with heat, they would all be alive. That's where the blame should go. The families should have also sued that touring company for negligence.
whatever_it_takes Exactly... the question still is how could Dwyer be blamed? I know the answer seems Elementary. But he trusted this pilot. Was the plane too heavy?
Larry Russell Overweight plane plus Peterson was only 21 years old and way over his head with that gyro and those horrible flight conditions. for a greater undestanding it is worth reading both John Goldrosen's biography on Buddy Holly and Frank Blanas book King of Clovis, on Norman Petty, another part of the picture. These recordings are from my personal collection..... they don't exist anywhere else, but I wanted to add to what is quite a complex jigsaw in the life of Buddy Holly
I was in the second grade and playing on the slide at school when school mate Roger Taylor dragging his guitar came up and complained how upset his mother was about Buddy Holly. Then 7 year old Roger sang "Peggy Sue". First time I ever heard a song by Buddy Holly........been a fan ever since of Rock and Roll and Buddy Holley.
I read somewhere years ago, that the person who worked for the weather office in Iowa never got a phone call from any pilot that night to ask for a weather report. The FIRST thing a pilot should do when flying in less-then-exemplary weather is to phone in and ask for a detailed weather report.
Both Dwyer and Roger Peterson had checked with the tower - they never received two important weather advisories warning about the dangerous weather system approaching.

Over weight capacity, ice on wings, trying to gain altitude but could not, perhaps the pilot lost control or made a last ditch effort to bank right and head back to the airport, while increasing speed to gain as much altitude as possible, but the plane just couldnt do it, which is why that wing first gouged the ground upon impact. Pilot error? Well if he did not check the weight of the airplane before the flight (the weight limit of that small plane is 1000 pounds, 4 men, guestimating their weight = 960 lbs a little more or less, doesnt leave much left for the weight of some of the bands equipment and their personal effects). And if pilot did not inspect wings for signs of ice, then yes pilot error. The pilot has the final say, after being advised of weather conditions, etc., if the plane leaves the ground or not. Pilot also failed to turn in flight plan before leaving. After the NTSB investigates and finds no mechanical error or failure, then it is always automatically found as pilot error. That's the way the NTSB does it's business. We will probably never know exactly what happened, but my theory is mostly an overweight airplane, and failure to check or double check the airplane's status before flight.
The pilot wasn’t trained to fly with instruments only. A new gyroscope had just been installed and he didn’t know how to read the instruments that’s why he was going down and to the left when he should’ve been going up and to the right
Nobody blames Buddy's manager Petty for not paying Buddy and the Crickets their royalties...Buddy needed money as anyone does to make a living and had to take that winter tour...didn't have decent transportation and decided to take the plane. Greedy Petty is to blame for Buddy's death.
I met Norman in 1979, he generously gave me a whole day of his time. In one of our conversations, he asked about his reputation. I said musically very much admired, but "the money" does seem to come up a lot. He looked at me and said, "I wasn't in control of the money." From what we now know about record companies and publishers, and their antics, I think he was being honest
@@whitesidewalls could be ...its a shame Buddy and the Crickets couldn't receive their money...many videos inform that Petty asked Buddy to send him the money they were making so he could keep it for the band ...and then when Buddy asked to be paid...they never got their money...if Petty wasn't involved in that scam...the decent thing to do was to help Buddy and the Crickets receive their shares...most people that know what happened are no longer around ... but Petty and his "reputation lives on" which makes fans like me think otherwise...as we Texans say...God rest his soul.
To put it bluntly is that the pilot (Peterson) should have never been flying...1,He did not understand the Gyro,,,,he had never been flying at night,,always relied on visual....And questions has to be asked about Dwyer the owner who let him take the flight on....
Any person that knew Jerry Dwyer have gone on record and said, that Peterson would not have been in the pilots seat, if he was not qualified to fly the plane. When I have asked pilots who are familiar with that model of plane, all three to date have said the same four words "The Wings Iced Up". Last but not least, I have personally talked to two people who were living in the Mason City area that night, and both of them have said that they saw the plane, and quote "it sounded like it was losing power." So I think saying that is was pilot error, is just plain wrong. Who knows, Waylon Jennings went on the record and said, he would not be surprised if Buddy was flying the plane. Remember in that model of Bonanza, you could flip the controls between the two front seat passengers.
The plane hit the ground @170mph and was producing power when it crashed. the nose was pointed down and was trying to turn right. Simply thought he was going up and was actually going down. Pilot error.
rockinmosquito how could they have seen the plane? That was an extremely rural area and it was the middle of the night. Anybody who says they saw it is a lying sack of shit.
Crashed 6 miles from the airport. ..only in the air 4 minutes.. ..going 168 miles per hour upon impact.. ..the right wingtip being the first part of the plane to make contact with the earth. ..it then cartwheeled 560 feet across a field and smashed into a barbed wire fence.
