    We made this for folks who are just starting to explore the world of sailing catamarans for cruising. We were there not too too long ago and a video like this would've helped a little while we got our bearings.

      Excellent videos. I am thoroughly hooked on all of them and so glad you made them. I almost feel like they were made just for me as I am starting my research on bluewater catamaran cruising. Unfortunately, it'll be about 10 years before I am able to financially retire and live this lifestyle. In the meantime, I'll keep researching and learning, etc. Thanks for doing these!

    This is one of the BEST VIDEOS for people serious about Catamarans . I 've been watching 'opinion'-'review'-videos for a while and most sound like salespeople for that company- NOT GOOD.
    *** But here you make excellent comments to inform the 'new person' to Cats. The Best Starter video is this ONE. Thanks Ryan & Jess. ( Also, I appreciate your honesty in posting videos about the 'mistakes' you've made- that takes GUTS !! ) .... Well Done & THANK YOU...-Don.

    This was very informative as I have been searching for a cat for sometime and you gave me ideas so thanks! However, I really fell in love with the Leopard 47 and 58 as I realized after a boat show that room is more important to me than speed or efficiency. I plan to live on a cat one day so having the space and luxury for Florida and Caribbean waters is my goal! Cheers...

    Another great cat is the Maine Cat 41, or perhaps the new 38. The 41 has the main berths located mid-ship which is a more restful location than the ends of a boat as common with most cats. I also like that the 12 foot RIB is stowed on chocks on the stern thereby avoiding the problem of a dinghy swinging around on davits while underway. The construction is 'liner-free' which I much prefer to better access the working parts of the boat (wiring, plumbing, etc.) I'm so excited about this design because I just purchased a used MC41 and looking forward to some fast cruising!

    • @jandradventures
      @jandradventures  7 років тому

      MC41 is an interesting boat for sure. Don't see too many of them on the market. Maybe people hang on to them once they get them.

    Hi Guys,
    Just got back from the BVI's spent 8 days on a Helia 44. Great as far as comfort but if you are looking for sailing and performance the monohull is king. Got to spend a day sailing a Jeanneau 54DS "Namaste" After this trip definitely rethinking monohull. Oh FYI the Cat had 6 A/C units and it was like the space shuttle as far as number of systems that could break. The cat was way slow as far as responding in higher winds and seas.

    • @jandradventures
      @jandradventures  7 років тому +1

      Hey Nat! Very cool. We're kinda jealous. :) Just curious, what do you mean as far as responding to higher winds and seas? Not trying to disagree but rather to understand.

    • @kipchicoria
      @kipchicoria 7 років тому +1

      We were sailing the cat in 20+ knot winds and the seas were about 4ft and the cat would take a while to respond to steering input. The waves would hit the first hull you would anticipate to correct course for when it hit the second hull. With 20 knots we had one reef in the sail. I will say in the mooring fields and marina the cat was king at maneuvering using the twin engines.

    • @jandradventures
      @jandradventures  7 років тому +2

      very cool. Yeah we're big proponents have having enough space to be comfortable. Even though we could squeeze into a 38ft cat it wouldn't quite do for us given how much time we intend to spend on it. Our goal is to make our cruising sustainable long term and honestly that requires a certain degree of creature comfort. At least for us. :)

    What makes this a great video is that you are such a reasonable, thoughtful fellow. Thanks very much for this informative piece. I've been sailing or thinking about sailing for most of my life. I was raised on monohulls, as we all were, but I went to the Abacos on a catamaran with some friends, and my mind was officially blown. Catamarans are the only way to sail the Caribbean. Shallow draft is REALLY important here. I saw a number of monohulls resting on their keels and heeled over at ridiculous angles at anchor in some shallow harbors. Not Good. Some commenters here do not fully grasp the scope of your discussion. My first choice of cat, after some years of research is the Antares 44. Ohter people call out this cat specifically. This was understandably not listed in your video, because there are basically none for sale. Your vid was about "Most popular" brands. Quick word about Fontaine Pajot...or "Helia", as the model is called. This is a floating condominium, designed to wallow comfortably in mellow seas, while giving its occupants ample storage for booze and snacks. It is not really meant for blue water sailing. The hulls are far too wide and the bridge deck clearance is too low for that. And that's fine. But if you want a blue water cat, there are plenty of them to pick from. But it's going to cost you. Performance and quality do not come cheap. That's why Fontaine, Lagoon, and Leopard are the most popular boats our there. Period.

    The reason there are so many French yacht builders is because the French government wanted all of the business that boating brought to the country, and to help the boating economy grow they put substantially less taxes on “luxury” yachts then in other countries.

    Nice videos so far! Thank you. I'm thinking and dreaming about something similar - although I already have accomplished a half year tour around the baltic sea in Europe, on a monohull. Have you considered the Aventura 33? It's a bit smaller but should definitely be big enough for a couple, plus it's new and very modern, while priced at around 160.000€. Maybe that's something for you...

    Good brand intro video man, youtube needs more content like this!!
    OK so Leopard, Lagoon, and Fountaine make up over 50% - does that mean those boats are easier to maintain because of familiarity and part availability? Or is that not really a factor?

    • @Beaunage
      @Beaunage 4 роки тому

      It should. Think of them like Honda and Toyota. They are very abundant and parts SHOULD be cheaper or more widely available.

  • @icebear1559
    @icebear1559 7 років тому

    Very nice job... i was surprised to see Privilege made the top 12. they are normally custom made so few are on the market compared to the big 3. but since FP bought them to get a high end line i guess you could list them under FP.
    and ya i was surprised some more boats like Norseman and PDQ were not mentioned.
    but very well done and prudent words for anyone starting there research.
    and dont be scared of older boats. there are great gem's and lemons out there.

    • @jandradventures
      @jandradventures  7 років тому

      Yeah, some of the boats like PDQ just weren't on the market when I pulled the numbers. My theory is that people get them and hang on to them. And since market availability was the sorting criteria for this list they didn't make it. I wanted to sort the list based on boats produced by each brand, but getting up to date numbers across all the brands was proving impossible.

    • @icebear1559
      @icebear1559 7 років тому

      Your correct. every PDQ owner i meet loves there boat and has no plans to sell it. even though the 32 and 36 LRC are small by today's standards but they were standard 3 cabin with stand up shower. they used to be made in Canada but labour was too expensive so they went south. but you did a fabulous job on your analytics regardless. I do think though that Older Cats offer good value for money back to 1992 when modern construction technique was developed. I used to build boats back then. and unless you go to Carbon you will not see a lot of change from then to now. we vacuum bagged boats and used foam core then so no change to now. Cad was still new but construction was sound if not over built. all a good boat from this era would need is new electronics and sails and away you go. and possibly more in your budget. but again. well done on your analysis.

      lol. yeah. You're at least the second to mention that. And to be fair we've done that same comparison ourselves. I'll most likely make a video like that sometime next month. Need to pull and clean up a lot more data for that video. I used a free screen scraper extension for google chrome. That got me 1/3rd of the way there. The rest was bulk data manipulation and manual clean up which was kinda tedious. I haven't found a way to automate the process as of yet. If only I could get access to the YachtWorld database. Then we could really pump out some numbers.

    I have yet to see a sailing catamaran (50+') build for real weather... like sailing the southern latitudes around South-Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand! Nothing out there... :(! All designs favor life-style, short trips and pleasure. Most are not practical and expose the woman/man at the helm. A good, modern cat should be practical first, then technically advanced (as in electric drive, lots of solar panels, 2 generators to charge-up batteries when needed, raised helm like on the old Privilege 585, low windage, etc.). my pick would be the TAN 60 with the enclosed rear and a few alterations, like the raised or indoor helm... and it should be made of marine-grade aluminum!!!

      Dude its funny you say that. I just watched a video about a cat named Ramtha that was owned by a older couple who attempted to sail from New Zealand to somewhere by Fiji. They hit 60 ft swells 2 or 3 days in. The couple called out and got no response back but the New Zealand Navy heard it. They set out and eventually rescued the couple by launched teather harnesses. The ocean was so violent the Navy feared rolling onto them if too close. The old folks abandoned their beloved catamaran, and their home. The next day they get a call from port authorities in Fiji. The Ramtha had washed ashore on some island just 80 miles from the original destination. It was completely intact. The couple flew down there, got the thing moved to a harbor, got the power issue fixed, topped the tanks. Back in business. See if you can find the video of the rescue. The cat takes a serious beating by the waves and is unphased structurally. Impressive.

    Great video man! I appreciate it. Ive been really getting into some boat porn lately and of course, Lagoon is lookin to be the best bang for the buck. Especially a deal on a quality pre-owned owners vers 440 I didnt realize all the "cross branding" that goes on with boats. I thought it was just a guitar thing... ie: Fender Strat USA, Fender Strat Mexican (MIM), Fender Strat Japanese (MIJ .. and bad ass btw!), and dont forget the low end licensed copy, aka Squire (Indonesia or worse... China). Glad to hear Lagoon is French. I'd trust their skills....

    • @jandradventures
      @jandradventures  7 років тому +1

      Hey, yeah. Not to say Antares aren't awesome boats, they're just not bought and sold that often, which was the sorting criteria for this list. I think people like to hold on to them when the get them cause they're so well built.

    moorings is a charter company which uses all brands of cats and mono sail.
    why more French builders... because the United States was stupid to avoid building them when 80% are found in Caribbean.

      Gary Fretz Why are Trinity Westport and others still in business if the Very minimal Luxury Tax is in effect? Spain for example has a 21% luxury tax. Florida is Yachting capital of the world for a reason. low taxes.

      Gary Fretz My point was on Catamarans not being produced even in Florida. Beneteau have a plant out of state, and continue to build mono... why? This seems a bias rather than monetary.

    I'm surprised you haven't heard about Antares, out of Argentina. They seem to specialize in blue water cruising cats for families. liveanteres.com (No I don't work for them)

      Hi! Yeah, we've heard of Antares and they have some awesome blue water boats. They didn't make the list because its hard to find listings for them. I think people hang on to them once they get them because they're such good boats.

      +Dennis Moffatt now sure how old they are but there are definitely less of them on the market which is why they didn't make the list. Same for Antares.

    What supposedly would be "specialist" on catamaran, and not able to know why there are so many manufacturers of French catamaran, is at least comic ...
