Always loved the seawind 1260. Best value out there. Price should have been a weighted category. Isn’t cost always the final limitation.

Agreed, the way I see it, if something goes wrong half way around the world, how easy is to get parts, how is the reliability etc. After all people buy Range Rovers because of whatever, but they break down non stop.
I think there is a reason most prefer the Leopards and Outremer.

It is the absolutely worst of the lot, and they, as a matter of fact, even LIE to further the boats, that they like over the ones, that they dislike. Take Neel as an example: They claim, that Neel is building to subpar standards and are literally unsafe, because they have no crash bulkheads! In fact Neel is absolutely class leading, the smaller Neel trimarans all have 5 or 6 crash bulkheads and the Neel 65 got 8! They are virtually unsinkable. Mind you, all multihul in extreme conditions can capsize. I have seen several owners reviews of these trimarans and also an entire Atlantic crossing, and the interior design by Neel may not be to everyone's taste, I actually like their airy and bright design language though, but it for sure not subpar! Nothing squeaks at all, even sailing in open Atlantic ocean in rough seas! Consider Nautistyles instead, which are more professional and less personal opiniated than this channel. Anyway, all choices of boats comes with certain compromises. I actually like their choice of catamaran, but it in truth cost the same as a brand new Neel 52 trimaran or the Windelo 54 catamaran, both offering massive more space and the latter also coming with an advanced electric suit installed from factory.

Sounds like we have a winner in the Ruby Rose sweepstakes? You gushed at the Seawind 1600 from the beginning and I guess the voting audience agreed, although in my heart the XQUISITE X5 is my yacht of my future. As an aircraft mechanic I see the similarities in the quality build, thoughtful placements of the things you need access to and the redundancies of the systems to prevent you from being disabled. Well done Terysa and Nick. Great job on the entire series. Doug in Vancouver Canada

The Seawind 1260 is probably the best Cat in my view, simply because of the features vs price. The 1600 is incredible, but you're going to pay for it, and a lot more than the 1260. Those big swing up doors make a huge difference to the livability of the boat, and in the tropics, those huge windows will make a world of difference.

Me too! I don't think any other company has the tremendous appeal of their constant follow up on maintenance to ensure a solid resale value. Add their willingness to be the central source of contact when dealing with all the mechanics that could need attention so you don't have to be tracking down companies and hassling with warranty coverages. It's just good business sense in my opinion. Then the fact that you can get so much customization and it is stunningly beautiful!

The methodology of getting the audience involved with interactive voting was revolutionary for sailing channels. The ranking tool is also real effective in visually laying out the results keeping track on where a boat stands. Good to see two cats at 1/2 million $ make the top 10 & top 5 in a competition where some of the competitors were close to $2m. Surprises for me: The Antares didn't rank as high as I thought it would. Well done Ruby Rose. Now I'm going to go back and re-watch some of those episodes again!!

Your work is so very much appreciated by us newly committed cruising liveaboard advocates who are trying to navigate the tricky waters of choice. I am absolutely using your reviews as a baseline in my decision-making. What is curious, however, is that, with the exception of the Leopard 45, Seawind 1260 (and perhaps a few others), the reviews are done in the comfort of a dock at a boat show. Performance is assumed by polar charts, which I understand to be rather theoretical. Are there any resources that you can recommend which are based on real liveaboard cruiser feedback, and cover such things as ease of sailing, slapping, ventilation in hot humid conditions, etc...? I'm scouring the web for resources and can't seem to find much. THANK YOU!

@@sailingrubyrose I asked the question because I'm always curious as to what a boat looks like after it's been on the water a few years. I'd love a catamaran but don't think that will ever be in our price range (even used). I've sailed them and love them but even used they can be worth a mint. We are probably going to end up with a mono-haul. I really like the versatility of a swing keel, though I'm willing to go for something with a 4ft draft. The Bahamas and Virgins are my favorite cruising grounds. Anyway, Thanks for your reply. I love your channel and am happy to be part of your patron.

    • @sailingrubyrose
      @sailingrubyrose  4 роки тому +7

Firstly, thanks for being a Patron. It’s much appreciated.
Regarding a boat 10-15 years old, it will depend mostly on who has owned it. We have diligently looked after Ruby Rose for 8 years. That means changing a lot of things on the boat every season: electronics, plumbing, gauges, switches, lines etc. We also spend money on servicing components, getting repairs done and making sure the boat is in as good condition as she could be.
If we had done nothing since we bought this boat, she would be a very, very different vessel.
So if you are looking for a boat, see how much she has been loved and pampered.

All nineteen boats you reviewed are great and as I "Binged" I took a few notes regarding space waste as I call it. A couple of surprises but overall an excellent finish. The top five were all well deserving of their places and the best part is that there were no 'errors' that make you think that the final places were not deserved. Perhaps the cat missing from the test is the Lagoon 45/50/52, these are extraordinarily popular boats and probably the most popular group of catamarans on the oceans. Great job by all concerned.

Doesn't stop me from watching and enjoying the content. And I don't bitch at content creators for showing off things I can't afford, either.

No surprise to me and my taste for No. 1 as price is drastically lower than my favourite Balance 😀 But price tag is high and its hunting time again to find something suitable. Seawind 1260 or even the Leopard 45 are fine boats.

Some very interesting results there.. great work Ruby Rose, i get the feeling this list may shock some designers/builders, but it was non biased! As voted on by the Consumers/ public, a great example of builders actually listening to what their customers want, Opposed from telling them they think they want..

I was sitting with fingers crossed hoping for the Seawind. Then a Seawind came in at 5th place I think I was disappointed, but then Seawind scores two boats in the Top 5, So when is your Seawind being built????
Absolutely great series by the way. Wonderful that a truly independent review has been undertaken and that you had the viewers provide the voting. The series was so professionally carried out with extremely high production values. The sophisticated and consistent graphics you used were a big part of that I think.
I reckon anyone wanting to buy a production cat should look at this series and it will interesting to see the feedback from the manufacturers , especially Neel, though you did manage to say something nice about them in this episode. If you removed the UA-cam language from Nick imagine you saying "Build quality was fucking lousy but she goes like a shit off a shovel"
Well done. No just waiting to hear what boat you are getting!!!!

  • @colinboniface194

I do believe the top 5 was right on the money. Price and taste seem to be the clincher in the hot choices... I still don't like the forward cockpit idea. Too much sun in the tropics, and too much weight if the front gets dumped on. If it takes 48 seconds to drain in a howler, that's an eternity...Someone else said, best non broker review on the internet. Totally agree. I regard you both as being in the know... Seawind got a mention twice. That says it all really... Good luck with yours when it becomes published...

Watching the individual videos as they came out gave me a different sense of what the results would be - but that was probably because I have many of the same biases you two have. The most surprising thing to me (and this speaks to my preferences) is that many boats lacking daggerboards rated higher than those that did have them. All and all, this is one of the most highly useful videos anyone has produced on sailing period. Now, what catamaran are you two going to buy??????

Hope Ruby Rose II is a 40 foot Xquisite X4, would place an order tomorrow for that one. Loved the reviews, especially as you are not brokers. I think you both should publish quarterly magazine/book on blue water sailing yacht reviews. ie qtr 1 yachts 30 to 35 foot, qtr 2 yachts 35 to 40 foot, etc, etc. I imagine that yacht manufacturers would pay to fly you to a location to test their boats. Keep up the great work, and please keep up the boat reviews for mono and cat and tri.

It will be interesting to learn your preferences for engines, water maker, gen set, your choice of solar array with controller and choice of batteries, air conditioner, galley appliances elec stove & oven v. gas, your selection of nav gear, sails, anchor, chain, dinghy and engine/ or elec. motor, and the emergency raft.
IOW, what components you deem to be most reliable, user friendly with an eye towards ease of maintenance and availability of parts, and what feature v. cost offsets you have accepted. You see, it would not make much sense to me to select an esthetically pleasing and safe ocean-going home without efficient and reliable working components.
