Another factor is that the biggest gg rookies have attracted attention for other reasons - Ive had 2 IzOne members debut and Wonyoung is still being talked about constantly, Kep1er is an Mnet survival show group that had a lot of contention around it, and Nmixx, Le Sserafim, and New Jeans had scandals around their debuts (plagiarism accusations and song format criticism, a major bullying scandal, and questionable content for an underage group respectively). It’s the old saying that all publicity is good publicity. I can’t think of any rookie bg that’s been in the news nearly as much.
Compared to GGs, BGs have less scandals than GGs. That’s not saying that they aren’t free however, especially when it comes to dating rumors/ships. GGs often edge out BGs in any form because of scandalization from saesangs or just normal fans.
i dont think its even one of the factors but probably the biggest factor. i didn't even stan a single one of these girl groups mentioned yet i couldn't go on twitter, tiktok or any sort of social media without hearing SO much about them. the popular members debuting, the scandals... people love drama and all popular people, and bgs haven't been involved in too much drama this year and no one really trended too much for their popularity.
also its interesting to me how almost all ggs that debuted this year had controversies and drama surrounding them, and it creates a lot of buzz and makes people interested, boygroups just came in quietly and had wifi paswords as their group name
What I've noticed is that bgs this year have many trending b-sides instead of title tracks (Polaroid love, Darari, Charmer, Opening Sequence, Run BTS) which rarely happens with girl groups. Boy Groups have very loyal fans which probably is also because of a mainly female audience, so sales are pretty high and stable although you barely hear anything from them. I think that's also the reason why more fans listen to Boy groups entire albums since they almost always have more streams on b-sides than ggs on (international) streaming platforms like Spotify (at least for more commonly known bgs). But yeah, girl groups have a lot of hype as of right now (and not only rn, it's been like this for a few years now). I think personally that it's somewhat related to the girl empowerment movement but also because girl groups in general have more easy to listen to songs for the gp. Groups like Stray Kids, Enhypen, Ateez and TXT release songs that not everyone can listen to, although I personally love it
Heavily disagree with the "girlgroups bsides barely trend" statement. In this year alone, gg bsides like My Bag, Sour Grapes, Illusion, Royal and basically every song on New Jeans' ep have become more viral than most bg bsides you've mentioned (except for the BTS bsides, you can't really compete with BTS lol). I also have to disagree with saying that Enhypen, Stray Kids, Ateez and TXT songs aren't gp friendly or that they produce songs that "not everyone can listen to" lmao. Their concepts have been done successfully multiple times before by senior groups like BTS, EXO, Shinee, Big Bang, BAP and many more. And that's the problem. Boygroups just aren't as innovative or creative anymore. Although they're still gonna have a strong female fanbase, the general public has kinda grown tired of seeing the same concepts over and over again. The reason why girlgroups are becoming more viral rn is because they're actually bringing something new to the table. I can confidently say that the concepts of the biggest 4th gen ggs like Aespa, Ive, Le Sserafim or New Jeans are completely different to the concepts of previous girlgroups. Can't say the same for the vast majority of 4th boygroups tho.
@@mariunfabregas7533 "gg bsides like My Bag, Sour Grapes, Illusion, Royal and basically every song on New Jeans" never heard of them. Almost all songs from gg last two years were factory made (except aespa. aespa has its own factory). All sounded the same. I've never heard another Charmer, Guerrilla or Frost.
i always found the opposing strengths and weaknesses of bgs and ggs really interesting. the former have a more dedicated fanbase that is willing to spend larger amounts of money on them, while the latter have a larger yet more casual audience that allows them to go viral and get known easier. right now it seems like the gg attributes are one of the most vital things for stardom, so ggs are pulling through lately compared to most bgs. (again there are excepions, but i'm just marginalizing for the sake of simplicity)
You're right, and with that said, most bg tend to last longer than gg. The fact is that there are way so many more gg that disbands earlier than 7 years, even the same year or the next year. There are even fewer gg that last longer than 7 years after their contract whereas bg last longer despite them going to the military.
The thing is, there are so many girl groups right now that some may suffer due to oversaturation. They capture larger, more casual audiences, but those audiences are more fickle. If they can't come out with great songs every single time, they'll loose public favor quickly. On the other hand, less boy groups actually gain massive followings and the ones that do have their careers made. Album sales and concert tickets are where bgs thrive and those are the things that make the artists the most money. Not to mention that, because of this set up, bgs can also enjoy more artistic freedom while ggs feel the pressure to put out bangers for the general public constantly.
@@stacie1595 agree! I think that's why boygroups tends to last longer and have more stable career, since they have a loyal fandom base that are willing to buy albums, merch, and buy tickets to their concert almost everytime. That's why boygroups usually known for their album sales and tours
@@moonies321 I would have agree with your statement if 4th gen girlgroups also weren't getting 1 million album sales it's not 2gen or 3rd where GG's were lacking dedicated fandom and album sales aside from few .
@@BhaktManomandirVihariniUma yeah you are right. I wrote based on what people's persepctive of bgs and ggs are in 2nd and 3rd gen, since 4th gen is just starting. I definitely see that 4th gen ggs are beginning to break that perspective of ggs, and also BLACKPINK as well - they are a 3rd gen gg and also the 1st gg to achieve 1 million album sales. But I think we also have to wait and see how their careers are in the longterm, and see how stable their fandom grows.
@@ldland2721 that's not true. Kpop in general has a large female audience, so with that logic it wouldn't make sense for ggs to be more popular than bgs
As in a more respectful way, how many anticipated girl groups have you heard about in the past year? A lot probably and for boy groups, I’ve heard a couple but not as much as girl groups. The only ones are Tempest, Trendz, TNX, Blank2y, and the new jyp boy group
@@jantjenotjanche right now, but in 2gen and 3gen people only cared about popular girl groups and the crazy fangirls always hated on female idols if they would even make eye contact with their favorite male idols

Exactly kpop stans just generalizing boy group only doing noisy music and just goes with it without trying checking out other musics. If they not doing noisy music no one checking out and crickets but when they do noisy music they'll complaining 😂
I don't think quality over quantity is the reason, I think the reason they don't release full albums is because the general public/casual listeners, their main audience, will most of the time only check out the title track and maybe a promoted b side. Meanwhile the dedicated fanbases of boygroups are very willing to listen to full albums.
My ult group is Ateez, and i love almost everything they put out, but i have to admit this year i hardly listened to any other boy group music and i gravitated towards more girl group songs
Ateez is also my ult group. I haven’t really enjoyed any rookie boy groups this year (I think I have 2 TNX songs on my playlist) but some small company groups had some really good releases this year-ONEUS’s Malus is really good, P1Harmony’s recent comeback was good, and I really liked the stuff Cravity did this year. The songs and albums are good but they haven’t gotten much attention because boy groups just aren’t getting attention especially small or mid size company groups. None of these groups’ comebacks sound the same. I think it’s just really hard for smaller company boy groups (other than Ateez who are one of the few 4th gen bg exceptions) to get attention in the midst of so many large company gg debuts and established gg popularity in general.
same here! my year has been mostly ateez, several girl groups (pixy, purple kiss, stayc, ive, blackpink, red velvet, dreamcatcher, aespa, etc), seventeen and bts and that's it on the kpop side. girl groups are dominating music this year and i honestly love it because i've been enjoying their music way more than boy groups
right, i got into kpop this year but all my recent songs i added to the playlist are rookie and a few senior GG songs and senior BG songs that came out this year like Cheers by SVT, Ateez's new album, SKZ new album, Jhope etc.
zoom and pop! might be the most successful kpop song this year because of the "dance craze wave" they bring on social media platforms especially on tiktok
Zoom kind of died down the hype, POP! is still doing pretty well. But when it comes to the highest on the highest, Love Dive is at the very top even if the song was released 5 months ago.
Boy groups aren't necessarily flopping by any means. SKZ, SVT, TXT, Ateez, and Enhypen are all doing well. Newly debuted bgs on the other hand are basically invisible. As mostly a girl group stan, only aespa, Red Velvet, and (G)-IDLE were the only groups I genuinely enjoyed listening too this year. Hopefully some of the bigger labels start debuting new boy groups soon, and I say this as a Kpop fan.
It's sad how nct is now the kpop's punching bag...many haters are trashing on their music just because of the 'noise' label when they actually have a really really good variety and quality of songs.
trust me, NCT is king in Korea, we hear about them all the time over here in Seoul, their music is played everywhere. Because the internet people generally fish for clout trashing on the popular groups it creates the false reality that no one enjoys NCT music when it's clearly not the case.
I forgot to add that ggs may be dominating because of all that “hate men” and that “women are superior” crap. because people think that just because you are a men you are a creep and a bad person, but if you are a girl you are a angel that does nothing wrong. And this just increments more in k-pop. An example of people paying more attention to female idols than male idols is the yuna and wonyoung (or whatever her name is) case, you will see EVERYWHERE their weight loss and people’s worries for them, but have you seen a case that people worry that a male idol is extremely underweight? no, because in problems like that, people always pays more attention to female idols. they have been A LOT of cases where a male idol is underweight, but people would not pay attention to that because they think only female idols get forced by their companies to do something. Another example is the sexualization. not only female idols get sexualized, but male idols also do, and a lot. But in female idols, sexualization is more noticeable because people only talk about that, but when a male idols also gets sexualized people don’t pay that much attention. (examples of sexualization in male idols are taemin from shinee and jungkook of bts) ANOTHER example is the ages of idols when they debut. Some people think only females idols get to debut at the age of 14-16. (jungkook and taemin are also examples that men can also debut when they are 14-16) yes, male idols have some privilege only because they are men, but that doesn’t mean they don’t work hard to be where they are. and remember, women are NOT always angels, and men are NOT always creeps. (sorry if some words are wrong, english is not my first language)
@@deary4wnzzn it's just since 4th gen girl Group are getting what they actually deserve .. a proper respect .. before people used to comment on their body and weight on national television without anyone questioning it ( many male idols used to do it too ) and nobody did it too male idols ( it's always expected of more from female idols to maintain their looks and weight ( f(x)'s Amber discussed about it too ).. Snsd were told they can't be successful because ..girl Groups can't be successful and maintain success for long time .. and bg Stan were horrible too GG's during 2gen and earlier 3rd gen era too like snsd got Black ocean just because they were close super junior and tvxq many other instances of bgstans being toxic to ggs is right there ..and if GG's were dominating just because of all men are bad .. than we won't have single bgs succeeding you know. But search top kpop Groups and you will find majority of them are bgs... ( I would agree on sexualization part tho.. we rarely see Stan's complaining about sexualization of male idols )
I'm kinda worried for tempest. They're probably already at a disadvantage in Korea because they're from a Chinese label, which I recall being an issue for Everglow when they debuted too. But yeah you're right, rookie boy groups just don't get hype. I'm just bummed because Tempest, in their first two mini albums, have some really stellar, non-noisy tracks. Their debut EP was a bit same-y but still enjoyable.
Honestly I am not a huge fan of boy group sounds. The only Boy groups I really enjoy are Verivery and Tempest. Golden childs Tracks are good too. Verivery is the Only boy group I Stan. You should hear some of their tracks(bsides too)
I'm not sure if it's true since I don't really keep up with them, but I heard someone say when they debuted Tempest outsold Everflow which is just insane if it's true but either way Tempest is safe for now and I don't think there's a need to worry for them much.
@@a.a.6789 hmm.... honestly I could believe that? Everglow doesn't really have great sales in Korea, right? Plus Tempest has Hanbin so in terms of immediate popularity I would expect them to have a bit of an advantage?
@@a.a.6789 They did, but I wouldn’t really call it insane since boy groups usually sell better than girl groups and tempest had 3 known members before debut
1. Most of the boy groups that debuted this year were from small start-up companies (except Tempest), a lot of GGs that *are popular* come from established companies that can spend millions for marketing (HYBE lol) so success would be guaranteed. 2. BG Market is wayyyyyy too tight now, the senior groups are still active and most of the seniors are still growing in popularity in Korea (Monsta X is probably one of the groups whose popularity in Korea skyrocketed, they’re even outcharting other rookie bgs whose sales are higher than them) and the rookies have to fight for attention with the seniors and we all know that most boy group fans tend to stick with one to two group. 3. Let’s go back to 2022 rookies, as I have mentioned most of them came from startup small companies so quality would be lower than 2022 girl group debuts. I have no idea who produced the bg songs this year while popular rookie gg songs are produced by reputable producers (IVE’s title tracks are produced by Ryan Jhun, LE SSERAFIM and NewJeans songs are obviously made by HYBE hired producers). 4. They are marketed differently, BGs are marketed for fandoms while GGs are marketed towards the public. it just so happen that the public caught up to the album trend (photocards are the main reason) and a lot of gg stans there are multis, unlike bg stans who again stick with only one or two groups.
Stayc and Ive are two of the new most popular ggs rn and they come from a small company, there’s lots of other ones, the only ones I can say that don’t are nmix, lesserafim and new jeans

@@ron3200 wdym stayc is one of the popular ggs rn, if this was last year then i would agree, but this year!!! not at all LMAO, they haven't really put out a popular hit this year, infact stayc fans are complaining about their producers trying too much experimental shit. Its Ive and (g)idle who are the popular ggs rn, while lesserafim and new jeans and kep1er are fighting behind them with nmixx not far back, other than that most other ggs this year have struggled including loona and dream catcher, with everglow its currently unclear if they will continue as a group and haven't put out any music this year to be the small group taking on the big groups as they normally do. so to conclude no stayc isn't of the most popular ggs rn, not by a long shot.
i think it's not that boy groups are flopping, they are stagnant. meanwhile girl groups are exponentially growing. that's why they overshadow bg so much
When did BTS, SVT, TXT, SKZ, ATEEZ, NCT flopped this year?? The rookie bgs didnt do well, but others did so well & are trending. Ggs are trending mostly in Sk, but internationally bgs still Rule
I'm sorry but I'm tired of people saying that bg music 'all sounds the same' or that they all have the 'same concepts'. I think ya'll just don't enjoy the music that's all.
Agree-I am not much of a GG stan but I hear a lot of gg because two of my kids like gg a lot. When their playlists are running sometimes they all just blend together in a way that I might say they sound the same but really they don’t. I just don’t care to sort out the differences for songs I’m not vibing with. I think something similar probably leads to the “all bg sound the same.” The critics just don’t care to sort out the differences. I mean I would never get Ateez, Stray Kids, or ONEUS confused-not even if it was a song I had never heard before. But that’s because I like these groups and know their unique sounds.
i’m a stay and luckily skz haven’t been hit by that bg flopping curse this year! i did notice that this did apply to some ggs but since theyre surrounded by a lot of success it doesn’t stand out too much. overall there are more gg songs that are just easier to listen to and have distinct sounds!
Yeah, honestly, I don't understand the "flopping" criticism at all actually. Boy groups have been seeing a huge jump in album sales across the board with all the top acts of the 4th gen pulling 1million sales this year. Like I get that they don't "go viral" but I fail to see how 1 million in sales and successful tours is "flopping." Also, I'm a stay too and I take pride in the fact that SKZ have managed to be so successful with self produced songs. Ggs are really popular but they have to sacrifice artistic freedom it seems ( (g)-idol being the exception).
for real, their Maxident pre-album orders right now are making Oddinary and Noeasy look like nothing!!! i kope skz continue to grow bc they truly deserve it 🥹
ofc they won't flop only recent bg's that have just debuted are only affected by this as skz had more time to grow their sound and gain a pretty loyal fan base, add that by being part of jyp it's impossible for them to flop.
@@stacie1595 I 100% agree with you on the use of the term "flopping", because a lot of boy groups are doing really well at the moment, they are just not going viral. I feel like this term is overused and thrown around way too often when it is not necessary. On the other hand, although it is true that a lot of Girl groups aren't allowed or feel too pressured to write/compose their own music because of the overflowing attention they're getting, (or some just don't want to partake in the creative process, which is fine) a lot of them actually do keep their artistic freedom, and I love to see it! You mentioned (G)-idle but I'd like to add Purple Kiss, Mamamoo, EXID, TWICE and surely more that I cannot think about at the moment!

I only listen and look forward to girl groups releases but Stray kids are the only bg that have interesting music for me and their albums always have some tracks that are added to my playlist they're a very diverse boy group
Maybe rookie BG's have flopped, but BG's in general are doing amazing. I've really liked both Ateez and TXT's 2022 releases (and they're both having HUGE years). And like you said, Seventeen, NCT and Skz are all super popular. I also think we're gonna have a pretty big rookie BG year, next year - with Trainee A, KQ Fellaz 2, & JYP Loud all debuting (and Iland 2 airing).
Good points. All of this years BG rookies are not from the big 3 or Hybe. There have been successful BG Comebacks this year-Ateez has broken every personal record and won 6 shows in a 2 week promotion. Stray Kids comeback also broke records both personal and in Kpop. They aren’t hurting. Both groups had really successful tours. I believe TXT also broke many records (I don’t follow them as closely) and had a successful tour as well. They are all growing in popularity. I do think in general GG debuts were better this year. And I’m not really into very many GG. I liked some (Billie was probably my favorite comeback this year).
I agree that a big 4 or mid sized comapny not debuting a bg recently plays a large factor in this. Most of the rookie bgs are from small companies with basicallly little to no promotion.(may be except tempest and xdinary heores) As a gg stan who can confidently say that I have heard every single boy group debut this year, I will recommend some nugu new bg releases I really enjoyed: •Nine.i-Parallel Universe(+highly recommend the whole mini album) •Tan-Du Du Du, Walking on the moon, Midnight •Trendz-Villain,Re:Daybreak,Forever More •Blank2y-Touch
yeah, it’s really just the marketing. out of all rookies this year the popular ones came from HYBE and Starship (though considered a mid-tier company, they have produced a lot of popular artists and they have a lot of resources), other rookies may they be girl groups or boy groups from small have received little to no attention (yes, there are a lot of girl groups that debuted this year, and a lot of them are stuck in nugudom). CSR, TAN, and CLASS:y are really great groups that have sadly not gotten much attention because they’re from really really small companies.
@@raidon8470 I was recommending NUGU bgs ,why would I include tempest lol. They are nowhere near nugu. Plus young&wild and next to you are some of my favorite bsides this year.
For me as a mainly bg stan I feel like bg who already debut are doing good (seventeen straykids TXT Enhypen NCT even ateez and some more) but I feel like rookies and groups that have debut recently definitely aren't getting as much hype as GG are right now
I feel like, unless a bg is from the big4, they tend to slow burn till they can build a reputation. Astro did that and now Oneus is having a break through moment. Heck, even some bgs from big companies slow burn. I would consider skz to be a group that slowly built up to their current success despite being from JYP. However, Ggs have to make major noise at debut and release viral hit after viral hit to maintain momentum. And if they can't do that, they fall off really quickly. Like STAYC was a top top group in 2021 because of asap but now nobody talks about them. Most of these ggs also benefitted from drama surrounding their companies or members.
@@stacie1595 yeah I agree it's seems like it takes bg groups longer to have a break through than it does gg, another thing I've noticed is that many of these girl groups that debut either had a scandal or a ex member for a different group debut in them which has given them even more popularity
This also leads to another topic: Why is Tiktok ruining Kpop? Some songs from bg have complex choreos that really aren't Tiktok friendly for some dance challenges. And gg groups have those cutesy and "easy" steps that could boost some dance challenges.
I agree. I feel like it's a part of routine now. almost every release this year(especially ggs) has that part of the choreography that is obviously for dance challenges. I feel like they're forcing the virality onto the song.
That's not true at all for ggs. Le Sserafim, Itzy, LOONA, and Dream Catcher, for example, have hella difficult dances, yet all of them have gotten more attention than bgs. Even "cute" moves aren't easy like the viral move from StacyC's "Asap" is actually really hard to do right. Or Gfriend's really elegant dances are also extremely difficult. Powerful =/= hardest, it just looks the hardest. Just see Taemin's "Move" which looks so easy but is the hardest choreo in KPop. Also, nothing at all is stopping bgs from doing TikTok friendly dances. You're really just proving the point that bgs aren't innovating because so many of them do dark, aggressive, noise, etc . . . comebacks. Hell, the KPop idol who started the TikTok craze was, in fact, a guy (Zico with "Every Song") doing a really cool and unique concept. Why don't other bgs try something like that instead of yet another red/black/grey powerful/hard/dark/noise music video?
As for the korean general public, it's no surprise why most bgs flopped in kcharts bcs of the prejudice that knets have with bgs in general. I mean they pretty much said themselves that they won't support bgs after 3rd gen anymore 🥲😭 ATEEZ (my ult group) for example had the potential to be viral with their songs Wave and Utopia just by how these two songs fits korean general public taste (there are several times both these songs were charting on kcharts randomly in the middle of the night, like what 😭 but didn't get its viral moments just bcs of that "prejudice". So yeah, this could be one of the reason. Anyways, as long as ATEEZ are beating their prev achievements every comeback, i'm fine with that. I'd rather have them get dedicated fans that will stay in the fndm gradually than get the gp who's probably gonna abandoned them once they found new groups to focus (didn't mean that i don't want them to get acknowledged by the gp tho, i do but the aforementioned is better.)
Hm idk. I don't pay a whole lot of attention to this stuff but I would say Stray Kids has definitely had a pretty explosive jump in popularity this year. Oddinary topped the Billboard charts and it was only the third Korean release to ever do that or something. And then recently, Maxident sold as many preorders in a couple days as Oddinary sold in a couple weeks. Plus their massive sold out world tour. In the absence of BTS, and with such a leap in the number of sales in the last year, I anticipate Stray Kids becoming the new golden goose of kpop boy groups. Their songs might not have gone viral on Tiktok (god am I okay with this, I hate that app) or had much success with the gp (and likely never will, even according to 3racha themselves), but the group's popularity has definitely exploded. However, I totally agree that rookie boy groups haven't even remotely had the same impact this year as rookie girl groups, many of which have either been iconic (i.e. IVE, Lesserafim) or infamous (as in the case of NewJeans). Tempest has songs that are cute and fun and not noisy, but they're not as ..... Tiktok-oriented as a lot of the rookie girl group songs, so I feel like that's why they haven't caught on in the same way. This makes me sad and disappointed. But yeah, I think the fact that girl group songs are going viral has a lot to do with it.
@@chrisw9122 Please don't do that to Ateez. I'm so tired if fans acting like that's their biggest accomplishment. It's not right. And you know it just upsets the fans of groups like SKZ who despite being from a big company didn't have a start any easier thay Ateez. That said... Ateez made their accomplishments off f their badass music obviously. And thats all that matters. Because bringing up their small company EVREY SINGLE TIME that you talk about them, has a negative impact. It makes fans look defensive of where they are popularity wise. They don't need that "small company, that's why we aren't at the top" cover story. They are an amazing group, they just haven't had their big break yet. Their moment is coming tough... 🖤 It will be well deserved.
@@DaddiesLittlePsycho are you really saying that big company groups don't have easier starts than those from small companies? small company groups have no guarantees of being able to appear on music shows, and if they do their time is often truncated, they have to fight for spots on variety shows, they usually can't afford the media play that translates into charts and music show wins, the companies don't have decades of accumulated wealth, industry leverage and favours owed, not to mention the obvious stuff like low budget MVs, costumes etc. and let's not pretend companies don't boost debut numbers for groups and buy mushow wins to create more buzz (that last part is a general note, not skz-specific, I don't know them enough to have any knowledge or opinions on that)
it's funny to say that boy groups are floping when they are selling the most 😅 it's just that everyone prefere taling about girlgroups, because girls on sns, i only see bgs too, it depends who and were you follow girlgroups focus on their images too, being model, and more on social and boygroups focus more on theirs songs, without showing themself (ateez not doing the challenge because it was to hard, or not that many tt but doing so many festivals and concert) when girlgroups are everywhere on it
I am not aware of any other group but as a Teume (Treasure Stan) this is the best year for them. Our fandom grow so much, they will now even hold a concert at kspo dome for 2 days. I don’t want to compare them with any other group but as far I I’ve know Treasure are so happy for their growth and No Teume thinks they are flopping. My opinion is just based on out fandoms experiences.
The big4 not debuting a boy group is the underlining factor and because the go is more lenient with girl group sounds it's easy for boy groups to be overshadowed however boy groups that are already quite established keep growing especially within fourth gen groups like ateez, text, skz, enh are not giving space fore any other boy groups to keep growing ateez for example just sold over a million albums and were number three on billboard 200. So this select few will keep growing
Yes! All of the groups you've listed have now sold over a million copies and charted within top10 on BB! I feel like that's worth noting. Not to mention NCT and Seventeen have always been very successfu!
I don’t stan many groups or keep up with what they achieve every come back but as someone who likes Stray Kids and keep up with their come backs all i can say is that they did great with both of their come backs this year. They literally just signed up with Republic Records and even tho they had the least amount of promotoin budget and some members got covid during their promotion time Oddinary era was very successful. They broke almost all of their personal records( i would say the only problem was UA-cam) as well as many kpop records, particularly 4th generation records. Circus was also very successful, especially when you consider that it was a Japanese come back and i think they will also do well with their upcoming come back Maxident. They have already shown a pretty big growth with the amount of preorders. So in short, i would say Stray Kids is an exception
But Stray kids is also from a big label like JYP. They literally have one of the biggest gg Twice and Itzy. They also have mnet by their side. On top of that they have members who are from outside Korea and are fluent in English. For a boy group that has all those marks, they still haven't reached what let's say BTS reached in the same span of time coming from a broke company with a ruined reputation. This just goes to show that if a big like stray kids, or even Enhypen who has hybe label on one side, and mnet on other cannot break into the gp the way ggs are doing, then Bgs who don't have what these big label groups have are in for a tough ride.
@@rraw7229 the topic is about how did boy groups do this year, not if they are on BTS’ level or not and comparing other groups success’ is not logical at all. There are so many factors that effects a group’s success. No group goes through the same path, every group has a different story to their success. You can’t just go “oh well they are under Big3” and “they have members who are fluent in English” and be done with it. For example promotion is a big effect. It doesn’t matter if you are from a big company or not. You would see that if you look at how messed up Stray Kids are treated by JYP and how it effected/effects their success. And if you still want to compare that with ggs than your logic also applies to them because they are also not on the same level as BTS and many big companies debuted ggs this last 2 years
@@zera8068 I'm sorry but every fandom thinks that their group is being mistreated by their company and not being promoted. And every bg group is pushing through extremely packed and heavy schedule amidst the pandemic. I remember there were news about The Boyz members contracting the virus every other week, yet the other members would carry on with their schedules. I remember Ateez members got covid, lost a family member yet were back on their feet touring, promoting, having comebacks and smiling in front of fans. If you're not considering a threshold, then I'd say that despite the difficulties- groups like txt, enhypen, ateez, tbz, NCT and Treasure ( despite being kept in the dungeon by yg ) show consistency. The video opened with a comparison between gg and bg, therefore i compared how that if Bgs like skz with the most favourable factors cannot break into gp, then it's not fair to expect those without these favourable factors. And yes, even though groups have their own path, a big company label and mnet matters a lot. You can already see how the members of girl groups ( izone, kep1er ) who have mnet promoting them blow up the new groups they are added to. You can see how much mnet helped elevating tbz's popularity in Korea after winning rtk. And debuting under a big company is just a waiting game. You're never going to really fade away even if you flop a few times, you just have to wait for that one hit and that's going to fuel the rest of your career. The same cannot be said about bgs who do not debut under big 4 labels.
@@rraw7229 lol sure every fandom thinks that but there is a diffrence between thinking they are mistreated and them being actually mistreated. You don’t even have to look much that into it to see if a group is mistreated or not. You are talking about how other groups got shit going on while acting like Stray Kids’ path was all flowers and rainbows because what they are from JYP and some members are good at English😭 and you are conflicting with your thoughts because of that. I suggest you to be non biased because you are clearly not
@@zera8068 Again, every fandom thinks that their group is the only one that is mistreated and their boys or girls are holy angels. You can't refute that by saying "yeah but my group is the REAL mistreated one here". And I didn't say that their path is all flowers and obstacle free. That's just impossible. I'm saying, that despite everything they have, if shit is not easy for them, then it's 10 times worse for those who don't have the things they have. For example, imagine a CEO's son who has to inherit his father's business. Is his life easy because he has money, education, etc? Def not. His life is a stressful high risk high return. He has a huge responsibility. And he has to prove something in front of a large crowd. His life is not a bed of roses. But think of a poor person too. There's not much expectation from him, from the larger public. But is his life stress free? Nope. Can he afford mental health and physical healthcare? Nope. Can he pay off his education loans easily? Nope. Does he have connections? Nope. Is he bound to face discrimination because he does not have connection? Yes. Is daily life, as simple as keeping food on the table be a challenge? Yes. When basic necessities become the issue, how do you expect the person to succeed in an unjust world? Sorry, to turn this into a different conversation. But I just used an example to show you that someone who has resources, is not rid of challenges. But someone who does not have resources, has an extra burden of procuring those resources besides doing what the person with resources must do. And btw I think you are the biased one here, but this is not a dick measuring contest.
I feel like it has a lot to do with the fact that girl groups recently have been taking a lot more of risks and therefore have a bigger chance of graving people's attention. Every month a girl group goes viral whether it's for good or bad reasons, not everyone likes it but they're sure going to listen to it to know what the fuss is about. Boy groups are playing it safe so people don't have strong feelings towards anything they do. Virality in social media is key and for that you need to do something a little out of the expected
I think this also applies for nugu GGs. TikTok on it’s own had helped alot of nugu GGs get attention either by doing challenges or covers of different songs from different groups. BGs are also doing the same, but if I’m being honest: the only BG I can think of using Social Media to it’s fullest potential is TXT and maybe Enhypen.
Girl groups primarily prefer quantity: they make frequent comebacks (Twice etc) with singles and sell them for almost the same money that boy groups sell mini-albums or full albums. It is true that in general Korean audiences and charts are more focused on girl groups and melodic sound (male trot), so the rest of the boy groups have to build their audience in China, Japan and the West, which they do with success when looking at Spotify, iTunes/Apple Music, Billboard. And the quality of the bg' music has always been on the level. It should be understood that there has always been a difference in the formation of the popularity of female and male groups: the former have a general and uninvolved attention of the general public, the latter have loyal fanbases. With the rise of KPOP in the West, where girls are also eagerly supported, overseas fans have begun to buy more of physical albums from both boy and girl groups, which has led to a more significant increase in sales of the latter (which leads to the feeling of only gg are getting popular from now on). However, there has not yet been a single debut of a male group from the big three companies or HYBE this year so we can't really compare with New Jeans or Les Serafim debutes... I think we have to wait and see.
The thing with Twice is that even producers agreed that each song from their albums is applauded. They're not the typical b-side track that was meant to only populate the whole album. Each song has its own genre way different from the Twice bubble pop concept that we know. In fact, it has been years now that a Twice b-side is more popular than the actual title track from Onces' perspective or the general public e.g. Queen of Hearts and Basics (written by Chaeyoung) are more popular than the title track Talk that Talk. Icon and Cactus (composed & written by Jihyo) which are both b-sides from the album "Formula of Love" are the crowd's favorite than the main track Scientist. Love Foolish written by Momo was MTV's Best B-Side of 2019. Onces still hate JYPE for making "Cry For Me" a non-title track, also, it wasn't even included in the album Eyes Wide Open and it was the same album that has "Hell in Heaven," another masterpiece. So Twice is under the category of having both the quantity and quality songs for each album. There was even a saying that "if you don't like a Twice title track, then check their b-sides and take a pick."
@@marinetteadrien3155 I have read and reread your comment several times, but I can't seem to figure out what you are trying to say. I'm sorry! Lol Are you saying that no BG comeback has been twice as popular as a girl groups? Or that no BG has as many comebacks as girl groups? Or that no BG album costs twice as much as a GG one? Lol I want to make sure I actually understand what's being said before I comment. Lol
Considering the fact that its always been like this 😭 gg are liked by the general public, and its not BGs fault that the gp doesn’t want to give them a chance. Stray kids for example, have released the most great albums and discorgrpahies over the years, God menu, Back door and Thunderous gaining the most attention towards Non-fans..but its not Boy groups fault for trying something new and its actually good but Korea chooses not to acknowledge it and then we back in the circle where BGs go back to releasing the same things. And it doesnt help when the companys font give the bgs proper promotions or anything intersting to work with either 😭 the only ones who doing decwnt in terms of 4th gen is Stray kids, they just sold out a dome in korea with 15k capacity for two days, going to hit 2 million this year and much more. Since kpop is involving more global things i think ya’ll need to take into account that kpop is changing. Not everyone is using just melon anymore.
I agree. Stanning nct means having to deal with other fandoms trashing them before even giving them a chance because they deem them noisy (especially 127). But it's so frustrating because their concepts, vocals, and everything else is so cool and deserves more hype. Listen to the 2 baddies album y'all!
I don't understand who said nct is flopping !! Winning a daesang with sticker and selling many copies ,2 baddies as I saw was liked by many !!! I don't see them flopping !
It's kind of sm's and NCT's fault that their title track always sound extremely noisy and flat out annoying, their b-sides are some of the most incredible music in kpop, but the casual listener will never check them out if all their title tracks sound noisy
recently saw people on twitter discovering 127 actually makes good music it’s quite frustrating when we’ve been saying they have amazing bsides but no one listens bc of their preconceived notion that they only make noise music check out their killing voice and new album btw 🙏
It doesn’t help that it seems like most bg’s are coming back with the same concept in different fonts. There’s little to no variety, especially with debuts. I don’t stan LS or New Jeans but they made noise bc of their refreshing debut unlike the typical girl crush. Bringing a fresh style to the table. But with bg’s it’s like everyone kind of expects the same thing from them so their debuts haven’t made much noise. In fact, bc of the repetitiousness, I think that’s why Tempest’s debut didn’t get attention (they rily did something different tho. Check it out). But yeah, girl groups in general have just been overshadowing bg’s bc of their achievements and its just been so easy to. Especially with the comebacks this year from bg being the same (Enhypen’s pass the mic disappointed everyone I know for example), and gg’s have been experimenting. Thus when a bg actually do something different it gets lost in the shuffle as “just another dark, noisy boy group concept.” (Hence why groups like MCDN, Onewe, Onesus, CIX, even Astro often get overlooked despite doing something different than the norm).
I think there is a lack of variety in boy group concepts. They are either doing a cute concept or a badass concept. Ateez's Dejavu was different since it's a sexy concept. Onlyoneof seems to be doing something different. I can't think of anything else. They are not even doing hip hop anymore like early BTS, BAP and YG groups were doing.
@@rainboworldstan I SWEAR ITS AUTO CORRECT. I spelled it wrong once or twice and now it just always spells it like that. I love them tho. To be or Not To Be caught my eye and I just had to stan after Luna 😍
it's bc major companies (big4) mainly debuted girl groups this year. i can't think of any bg that debuted from the big4 this year (i could be wrong) so it's quite expected the focus would be on the bew ggs bc let's be real everyone looks forward to new groups, especially of they're from the big4. and as we know the impact of big4 on the industry and the general public tend to lean towards big4 groups more and don't exactly give small company groups that much attention. stayc and ive are exceptions. also survival shows play a big role in getting the gp to tune in so it's only natural for the ggs from those shows to do well. the new bgs that debuted this year just got overshadowed by them, doesn't necessarily mean they have bad music. also I'd like to add that I don't think charting in k-platforms should be the bar of success bc obviously there's other factors too
I am the type of person that checks out every new release of a group even if i did not like their last one, just incase i may be missing out on an amazing song. This happened to me with Cravity when they realeased adrenaline, which is my fave TT of theirs now.
Treasure reallly stood out this year with their mini album especially with their title track Jjkjin and the Viral song “Darari” I hope that u will notice them too 🥺 Treasure didn’t really stick to one concept they really show every comeback that ther’re versatile
And the exception is Stray Kids! Like look at their stream, sales and charts radio, its almost perfect, since maniac their popularity exploded specially in China, like look at Hyunjin and Felix cbars bought over 100k albums each for Maxident (their upcoming cb) and trending on weibo almost everyday, also they sold out two dates in the KSPO Dome in Korea, they will hit for sure 2M preorders this cb, they are no where near to flopping :)
as a stay I gotta say that I distance myself from skz this year and prefered ggs but that might be a individual. just saying that for me skz wasnt rlly different
Also other bgs aren't flopping either. they r all doing great numbers and are stable but uts just that the impact they had this year on kpop in general wasn't as great
I think the tittle should be ''WHY ROOKIE BG are flopping this year? '' because SKZ, TXT, ATEEZ, ENHYPEN and others really have been kicking ass, meanwhile there are tons of gg that debut on 2022 including 2 from hybe and 1 from JYP so, that its another factor. When one of the big three or HYBE debuts a BG then you'll see the hype, because people will be intersted in other rookie bg that will compete with them on award shows so basically there is a need of a BG from the big three or HYBE to make rookie bg relevant again.
I think girl groups mostly tend to pick a concept and stick with it. When you hear Black Pink has a new album, you know what the concept will be. When you hear Aespa has a new album, you know what the concept will be. Boy groups are more likely pick a storyline and stick with it. The concept changes to fit where they are in the story, either within the album or across multiple albums. If I want to hear a different concept from a girl group, I will most likely choose a different group. If I want to hear a different concept from a boy group, I will most likely choose a different song or album for the same group. I think that's why boy groups have such loyal fandoms.
I think bg who are doing great are seventeen, nct, ateez, stray kids, txt and the boyz, other than that I barely know when there’s a boy group comeback bc they don’t get my attention. Meanwhile ggs are giving us bops after bops
DISCLAIMER: I'm a girl group stan but I'll try to be unbiased. I think there are a lot of reasons behind this, and I'll write them down (sorry, this is goig to be long). Also, English is not my first language, so I'm sorry if i make some mistakes. 1) LACK OF SAME - GENDER AUDIENCE In the past (but even now) boy groups were generally more popular than girl groups, becuase they have most of the times a huge audience of girls. Girls are a stable fanbase, they are going to stream and made a lot of publicity to their favourite groups. Instead, a lot of girl groups were followed by mens and boys. For this reason, a lot of agencies started to think that the only way of made their girl groups succed was gaining a huge female fanbase. So, a lot of girl groups lately are more focused on this and their promotions are made exactly to gain attention of girls and women, by creating items such as bags (which is used by everyone but mostly by girls), releasing songs with an empowering message and creating contents that are more focused on their work as an idols rather than just them being cute on camera. So, a lot of young girls and women feel inspired by them and listen to their music. So, a lot of female audience is slowing starting to pay more attention on girl groups rather than boy group. If boy groups will not gain a strong same-gender audience this will probably continues like this. 2) NOT SIMILAR CONCEPTS, BUT SIMILAR AESTHETHICS A lot of boy groups have original concepts, but they seem really similar, because agencies just wants to make male idols look like an ideal boyfriend rather than an actually idols. They have similar hair styles, similar fashion and similar photography. Their music videos looks dark and badass, but that's it. It's sad to say but sometimes a colorful music video or outfit will make people more interested and their probably check the song out beacuse of just aesthetics. 3) BTS BTS are actualy the most popular K-Pop group, but also the most popular boy group.Certainly BTS deserve this spotlight, but I hink that they're overshadowing smaller boy groups. Their concepts are really regular concepts , but what made them famous is how they personally embody every concept. But because their concept (how many times I've said "concepts" right now?) are really regular, now every time a boy groups does a regular concept weel they are nothing compared to BTS who made that same concept PERFECT. Of course, this is not my opinion but I think is what most of the fans think. Also, beaucse BTS is so popular internationally, every time a new boy group become famous internationally they are gonna be compared and inevitably lose. Another thing I want to point out is that BTS are very active as a group and as soloists. Every time they release a new song they are gonne breakl the charts becuase a lot of their fans are non-kpop stans or fans, just causally listeners. So for a boy group is really difficult to gain attention on the charts. While BLACKPUINK just have 1 or 2 comebacks per year and for the rest of the time they are inactive. they still break the charts but just for 3 months, for teh other time of the year a lot of girl groups have time to shine. Of course this is not BTS' fault, but this is just a consequence of their succes. 4) STEREOTYPES AGAINT MALE IDOLS This is not just something that happens in K-pop, but there are a lot of stereotypes that affect men that a lot of people don't often think about (I'm talking as a girl). There was a time where girls could not do anything, so now that we are fortunately starting to get recognitions, we are doing everything. So, girl groups will do a pull of of concepts, some that are stereotypically called "feminine" (like girl crush, sexy, cute, pure, ballad...) and some that a lot of people think are more suited to a boy group (like noisy music, horror, tomboy etc) and their versality is weel received. Boy groups right now are always stuck with same concepts, like sexy, dark, boyfriend and thing like that. Because when they try to do concept that are not really considered masculine like cute, pure or retro (this is a strange thing to say but I actually never listened to a retro concept boy group's song, except Dynamite, can someone recommend me something?) they are gonna be weel received by a smaller audience. Th only groups that have been succesfull even when tryng cute or differents concepts since 2010 I think are TXT and BTS (they both belong to be BigHit). For this reason a lot of groups are considered not versatile and seems to be always the same. 5) In the past 2-3 years we haven't had a lot of big agencies debuting boy groups and a lot of male survival shows. the only times when we talk about male idols from big agencies are because of scandals (REALLY BAD SCANDALS). But the next year we are going to have Boys Planet, My teenage Boy and probably others survival which are not yet announced and a new JYP boy group and a (probably) a new NCT unit are coming, so I think this is going to change soon. I wrote this comment based on my personal toughts and expereince. Sorry if this has been long, but I hope you enjoyed it. Also, congratulations if you have read it all! Thank you for your attention, seriously!
I really like your 1st point regarding the lack of appeal of boy groups to men/boys. You said it correctly whereby all along boy groups marketed to girls/women and girl groups marketed to boys/men, we certainly see a shift whereby there are more and more girl groups marketed to girls with girls power-ish concept. fangirl is typically more loyal to the group they like (boy/girl) rather than fanboy who typically might change faster. I agree that girl groups ability to capture both genders’ attention as well as general public is unique and probably not easily to replicate in boy groups, at least not in near future. I would say not all girl groups’ song that hit it big is easy to listen too, remember 2021 Song of the Year was aespa’s next level who got everyone initially confused but ended up sang along anyway.
for a retro bg rec, check out Candy Sugar Pop by astro, Cherry by ab6ix. mmm well, some of your points contradict a little, like first you say bg concepts aren't limited, only their aesthetics, but then you say their concepts ARE limited. then some of your points are undermined by groups like astro, pentagon, younite, tempest, verivery, bae173, the boyz, ab6ix - groups who've done cute, visually appealing, even varied concepts and aesthetics, but are still considered solidly mid-tier at best (and that's for the groups who've had a few years to grow - the rookies are practically nugus). that list is probably even bigger, since there's still more bgs from small companies that could be up to lord knows what that nobody ever hears about. i think the closest to the truth is your final point, that there simply hasn't been enough bonus interest (whether from a big company or from a popular prior group) in the rookie bgs this year. it's always been a competitive and saturated industry, but this year the biggest ggs have started with some kind of reputation headstart, while the bg rookies are starting from scratch.
@@irisa198 First of all, thank you for you reccommendations! You are right, maybe I dindn't explained that properly. What I wanted to say here is that boy groups have really a small amount of concept they try usually (5 or 6) and even when they try a new concept, the aesthetic is going to be very similar. Other than that, I said at the start that I'm just a girl group stan so I didn't know that the boy groups you mentioned earlier where that successfull. Of corse I'm happy for them, and thank you for letting me explain!
For retro you should checkout 1 of 1 by SHINee. Actually NCT dream debuted with cute concept which I think was successful and slowly changed their sound as years went by
I think it’s also the fact that a lot of rookie boygroups at least the ones that debuted this year are kinda confined to doing similar dark concepts, which isn’t surprising bc that concept it a pretty big staple, but the music is sounding kinda undistinguishable too (except Tempest and Younite). And the boygroups that are doing something different aren’t getting any recognition for it either
in my humble opinion, I think the reason why I barely hear any bg debut or even a cb from a bg that debuted last year this year is because the majority of them are trying to fit into a "mold" that people once bullied. Stray Kids' style. I will never forget how people treated them for being different (until this day tbh) and now they are just used by other labels (excluding the big 3) as their blueprint for a bg which made them debut bgs with "noise music". I stopped following a lot of groups since 2020 but it's impossible to miss out on the fact that bg bsides are a bunch of hits since last year (thanks to the fans that stay tuned) while gg are known for their title tracks. (old gg bsides are resurfacing though!) now gg title tracks have no sort of a blueprint, they just have a huge variety. there are groups who brought back the 80s, 90s, 2000s, 2010s (I'm talking about from 2020 to present time), and there are groups who also have experimental, kpoppy, quirky like concepts (very reminiscent of the 2010-2015 kpop) and just a whole bunch of things that perks up my interest whenever I stumble upon them. + major ggs made a comeback this year! so, that's hard to miss. before people started to vibe with idle's my bag, I already listened to their entire album- I love escape, already, and polaroid. this was because tomboy was interesting. (which debunks the initial statement of many kpop fans that ggs tend to have an album with impossible to listen to bsides) girls generation, bp, twice, nayeon, stayc, and newjeans are just a few of the new gg albums with great bsides! back to present day, I hope label companies will have rookie bgs debut and comeback with comething that introduces their group's color so well instead of just always going with the flow or "trend" then they wouldn't have this curse. longevity is important too, not just TikTok sounds. it would be super alright for them to come up with a different sound of their own too! edited: a lot of the rookie bgs are not from the major label companies.
you’re so right. When stray kids started doing something different everyone is trying the same. I remember when after so many different sounds and genres, SKZ blew up with Gods Menua and now everyone’s trying to replicate that Gods Menu hence why ppl think “every BG does noise music” when they’re really not
I have a theory that x1 disbanding caused the downfall of rookie bgs. this is objectively the izones girls year and if x1 were able to have the same longevity as izone we would be seeing all post x1 debuting now. the 3 months weren't enough to build the careers of the members and now they're groups are suffering
That's a fact. Just look. WEi, Bae173, Cravity, Drippin and the other that i forgot are really good groups but have 0 to none hype around their name. Also, as a HUGE Treasure fan, I noticed that bg take a lot ti grow. SKZ, THE 4th gen bg, took 2 years and half to explode but still cant be compared in terms of music show wins to ggs. The only one who were big from the beginning were TXT but their numbers are not THAT big
I was just thinking this!!!! X1 should have been the biggest group and by the time they disband the groups they are in now could be even more massive. Izone is the only group that got the most out of their promotion to transfer to other groups.
@@markigirl2757 so much could have happened with x1 they could have been one of the most influential bgs its sad their time was cut short it really screwed with everyone makes me sad seeing all post x1 groups stuck in nugudom if they would have stayed together im sure their popularity would have easily tranferred to their respective groups right now
Literally if X1 didn’t disband they would be one of the biggest 4th gen bg next to txt , skz en and ateez It’s really The X1 course I miss them everyday *subs*
You truly raise the good point with "no matter how many boygroups come with brighter and lighter concepts it still won't be successful if general kpop stan always have fixed mindset that bg is all about noise music". I think I have some opinions why 4th kpop bg is failing in SoKor at least because some 4th gen groups does get popularity overseas: 1. X1 who could be the Iz*one equivalent for bgs that help a lot for mid companies bgs to getting more recognition is disbanded very quick before the group itself gain recognition from GP 2. I think korean GP just completely shift from bg music and seems interested more to khiphop scene music such as Be'O or Sokodomo as the substitute for bgs
1. TxT is the group with the biggest growth. 2. Girls concepts are repetitive as boys concepts. 3. There are many reasons because female rookies are more hyped than male rookies and the first one is that no group from a popular agency or survival debuted. 4. It's not quantity Vs quality. Ggs simply promote one song and in fact they are selling 1 single albums o albums with 2 tracks or more (but already known) because it's a boost for sales. 5. People in general are attracted by female groups' mvs. It's also happens internationally. Outfits, effects, green screen. It's everything bigger. With popular ggs, after that people become into those songs while other less popular ggs has unknown songs with lots of views in the first week. 6. Bgs are more interested in the international audience. 7. Bgs have more fans while ggs have more ggs stans (generic). 8. Korean Gp doesn't even try to give attention to Bgs. It usually happen casually. 9. Bgs choose to do less promotion (like TxT).
bgs mostly focus on their fanbase rather than the general public right? is this why their promotions are cut short to go on tours and other fan related things, i wish their companies put more effort into putting them out there and sending them on variety shows
This was really interesting, thank you! I'm not sure how much of a factor it is, but one other potential reason that came to my mind is that boygroups still have that label of being "for girls only", while nowadays girlgroups are marketed to appeal to everyone, giving them a bigger potential audience. For fun I thought I'd list some bg releases I've enjoyed most this year: Marvelous by Mirae, Bad News by Tempest, Guerrilla by Ateez, Your Song by ONF, Nonstop by Road-B, Replay by Golden Child, and Same Scent by Oneus.
omg I thought it was just me 😭 I used to consider myself a bg stan bc their music fits more my taste, but last year and this year I noticed a shift of listening to more gg. gg have been on top of their game lately and I feel like a lot of their songs are good on first listen vs bg who have songs you have to listen to more than 3 times to actually like.
i feel so called out 💀 i used to basically be strictly a bg stan, with the occasional blackpink song but recently i’ve been listening to a LOT of gg music. i thought it was bc my tastes in kpop was just expanding, which it probably is, to an extent, but i really do think it had to do with this as well. not even my ult groups, verivery and dkz, were safe from this 😭 i thought O and cupid were boring and didn’t really like the chorus of undercover at first but they did grow on me a LOT. That being said though, i definitely prefer their songs from last year or before. i’m really looking forward to dkz’s comeback, hopefully they can break this cycle edit: doom du doom and same scent are exceptions tho, i immediately loved them
honestly kpop girl group songs get so much hype because of Tik Tok and the companies often cater these songs to these social media platforms. It’s often enough to just be catchy but in the long run boy groups have usually more stability. Also there is a difference between domestic and international recognition that’s why you can’t just base the promotion on that. I think it’s not true that boy groups don’t get the hype and only do well in physicals, it’s just sometimes elsewhere. Like a lot of boy groups are really growing in Japan and China for example. I don’t stan anyone besides SKZ so I can only use them as example but the hype for them is definitely there. Multiple songs of them are always going viral and since they’re having a comeback soon, they already broke a lot of records. It was shown that the fandom grew more than double since the last time and they recently had some brig promotions for Billboard and YSL. Yes they do well in physicals but that’s not the only point and doing well internationally also counts. While bg music might not be as adjustable to listen to at first, more people are gravitating towards music that’s not mainstream which is why bg will do well in the long run. They built up a stable fanbase that will stay with them for a long time, while gg usually pull a lot of casual listeners. Not to mention that a lot of gg songs this year didn’t do to well either. While I understand what you’re saying, I think there is a difference in fandoms and the public as well. Knetz usually enjoy a different type of sound than the west so that’s why most gg do well domestically and most bg internationally.
I've commented this on a few other posts but I also appreciate how bgs, especially skz, have more artistic freedom. Maybe it's because their branding is more dependent on fandoms who want a more personal experience with the group, but more boy groups seem to have wiggle room to experiment and create. That's personally why I prefer some boy groups, I like how genuine they are in the music as opposed to ggs whose songs just seem more sanitary and corporate to me.
No one big company debuted a boy group of course all the attention are having gg this year Next year bg from big company will debut is going to be the same thing as now This year rookie boy groups are from small company of course they are not hyped or getting much attention from kpop fans But it’s a shame that bg this year are really looked down because they are not from big4 People were bored and asked for a group with more fun and cute song then TEMPEST debuted with a refreshing song and just had their 1 comeback They are worth it Stan them their music is really good just positive vibes
In 2022 male groups like Black Level, jwiiver, Aqa, Superkind, blank2y, tan, trendz, nine.i, tnx and villain (a project group) all debuted so far in 2022!! ❤️ Most of them are so nugu. So yeah. Your video is correct! This is besides tempest
not even youngbin, a popular former contestant of i-land and saejin, the center and most popular "member" considering he is an AI couldn't save blank2y and superkind respectively from nugudom
Honestly I feel bad for Superkind since the only reason they're mentioned or even remebered is for Saejin. I liked the concept behind the Watch Out MV and the song itself wasn't that bad tbh but their company is too much focused on that AI. Heck, the other members are still making content as four despite the fifth human member, JDV, debuted months ago. Hope in their next comeback they'll finally promote all together.
@@faceglitch. yeah it's sad. I hate their company deep studio. They had a girl group planned who's name was Yours (probably a pre-debut name), but Nothing is known about them anymore. It's sad
To be honest I think these types of topics can be looked at from a variety of different angles. In my circle, groups like SKZ, Ateez, NCT etc. are all we see on our feeds. I see some stuff pop up for a few of the gg’s that I follow but I’m not really having new stuff pushed down my throat. I also think using the term “flopped” is an over exaggeration. Like the majority of popular 3rd and 4th gen boy groups are continuing to rise with each comeback. It’s just that we’ve had more gg’s debut this year that have blown up immediately which has taken “some” of the spotlight from bg’s
On promoting- I’m gonna take itzy and skz as an example. They are in two divisions groups and under the same American label but their promotions are so different. In 2019-2020 It would made sense, itzy was way more popular than them. However right now? With thunderous and maniac? They skyrocketed, they are getting more attention so it’s weird that their only promos are still good ol’ weekly idol and ASC. I acknowledge that this year, they have been busy with other stuff(touring and the likes, also getting Covid) so I just hope next year things get better. But even so, during the summer, they shot a video w buzz feed for the puppy interview but it has yet to be released. According to buzz feed, they are still waiting on the okay from ska’s team(div1) which is infuriating. If everything is done and All that is needed is approval, why is not out already? I could talk about this specific issue more but I’m gonna stop here. I don’t know how promotion goes for other groups but this is an example
i wish the puppy interview was out right now too 😭 but i think they might be waiting to release it for maxident promos. not sure, but it could be possible… i still have no idea why it hasnt been posted yet ;-;
div1 sucks at promoting skz. They did interviews with tumblr and please do tell me who cares about tumblr at this day and age, it is not even a trendy platform anymore and it won't make new people curious about skz, the only people watching those interviews are already stays... They really need to send skz to popular shows or something because they are just wasting their potential atp
the only boygroup comeback i remember, next to whatever Straykids is doing, was Ateez. Im kind of a casual listener of kpop so i basically see whatever is trending and know of about 10 GG comebacks and 1 BG comeback. Its a cycle, where whatever is trending, gets boosted really hard and no one sees whatever is not trending.
@@LovelyIKnowx im not really into the fandoms, but you could consider me a stay if you want to. I just listen to them so much, they flood my recommendations
When people talk about variety I feel like most people just talk about concept variety not variety in terms of musics. In terms of concept , I agree ggs have more variety than bgs but if we're talking about variety in terms of music I feel like bgs have as much variety as ggs. Like you can't tell me that same scent and bring it on are the same "noise" music that "all the boy groups are doing". I feel like kpop stans just didn't want to give the same amount credits to bgs because of the "feminism".
I mean, I'm mostly a bg stan and I didn't vibe with many gg comebacks and debuts this year but I enjoyed many of the bg cbs and debuts, and I usually get more recommended content centered around boy groups... Tbf I don't bother to check out many gg cbs nowadays so it makes sense.
i think boy groups floppings this year has to do with the fact the most 3rd gen girl groups have died out leaving only bp,twice, and rv and kpop stans have 4th gen groups to fill the void of gg's but then 3rd genn boy groups are still very prominent such as bts, exo, nct, ikon, monsta x, seventeen, winner, etc and kpop stans still have many boy groups to pay attention leaving 4th gen boy groups in the background
I also think a huge reason why rookie gg’s have been more successful this year is becasue none of the ‘big 4’ companies debuted any boy groups this year (so far). When you think about the gg’s that have debuted this year like nmixx, le sserafim and newjeans, all 3 of those groups belong to the big 4. Now if hybe (&team are set debut later this year in December) jyp, yg or sm had debuted a boy group this year the roty discussion would be more balanced I reckon. This isn’t the only/main factor obviously since groups like Ive and Kep1er aren’t from the big 4 and they are doing very well, but it is definitely a talking point.
not all bgs flopped, like ateez. their recent cb not only broke records but also made new records. movement was their most successful album to date and became their first million seller and not to mention it also charted at #3 on billboard, was on the circle chart at #1 for 2 consecutive weeks. guerrilla got 6 music show wins and many, many more achievements. they also did a successful sold out tour in the beginning of this year and they're gearing up for another entirely new tour starting in october. so they're doing great and will do even better in the next cb. you could say it was only the new bgs that kinda made no noise but other than that the existing ones are doing great.
I feel like it is because new ggs had a lot of polarising scandals and are passing the crown between each other that it got really competitive and drew more people in. Like I have seen so many new ggs' fandoms fights, but bg's fandoms seemed rather chill this year. Personally, I am more of a bg stan like NCT, Stray kids, Seventeen, Shinee, ATBO and mamy more. I was really satisfied with most of the releases this year when it comes to bgs actually. For ggs I mainly am into Aespa and BP's solo projects. For me on the other hand some of the ggs seemed rather generic in a sense they tried to hop on a trend like Kep1er and Nmixx's debut just didn't do it for me. I wasn't also a fan of Fearless and I am not going into the whole New Jeans situation. IVE had really good music tho and many people checked it out. I generally think it can also lie in the fact that every big comeback gets more and more attention and we just hadn't seen any big 4 bg debut since Enhypen I think.
I think in terms of being well received esp by general public, gg are doing really well. Ateez is doing really well tho. Major successful world tour, breaking their own new records. Just wished ppl will be more open minded and check out grps even if they aren't from big companies. They wld hv achieved even more if their company did better for them
For me it’s that I haven’t really seen many boy groups bringing anything new to the table, the darker concept that a lot of boy groups do is fine imo. I think there’s many different ways to do the same concept but they rarely ever do that, the lack of identity makes my excitement for these group die really quickly
You may check Oneus, they always do different concept each comeback but still have their own identity, they even got a title as stage geniuses and concept kings, and kings of expression
@@kant.68 By the TV show, everytime they appear on a tv show for example weekly idol they are called stage geniuses , even during road of kingdom all the other idols keep praising their face expression which earned them the title of the expression
I feel like skz have still been doing well, with oddinary topping billboard and selling really well, maxident looks promising as well, but aside from them yeah it really feels like no other bg has blown up like before
Another reason could be the trend of feminism. Let's be honest, nowadays marketing is targeting women because society in general wants something that puts women first. So considering that, we can see a lot of boy groups doing unique concepts, but people don't want the male prototype that kpop sells anymore. Something else is that I don't know, although people try to hide and deny this, today we sexualize women more than men despite the fact that society is supposed to always talk about not doing it, it is very contradictory. In fact, it's funny because that feminism of marketing makes us believe that women are being more valued, but in fact, in many female groups, good and educated girls who do not question and feel straight predominate.
TNX from pnation was my favorite boy group debut so far this year. Straight up noise music and a lot of the members are into k-rappers that I like, so I was super excited for their debut and it didn't disappoint. I'm also not a girl group stan (except Dreamcatcher) and not on stan social media, so my taste is largely unaffected by popular opinion. Outside of kpop, I'm pretty much only into emo/metal/and hip hop, so it's no surprise noisy boy groups are my fav (Monsta X, Stray Kids, MCND, p1harmony)
I stan Ateez and they may not be big before but they are not flopping...maybe they are not talked about much before or any other occassions but the group doesnt miss and now they are being talked abt to because of exploring new stuffs😭💖
The only thing that stopped Ateez from being big all those years is the amount of haters. They got so many haters even before establishing a good solid fanbase. People are kinda envious of them imo. And don't really think of talking good about them even tho they like their work .
I'm not a Atiny, but I was literally searching for an Ateez comment. Thank you for commenting 😭. Their new album has been a blast, I been listening to the whole album 1-2 times a day for a month as a non-stan 💀. Ik this video is about ggs having more attention, Even I am normally more into ggs. But believe me when I say this unbiased opinion, the new girl groups were talented for sure, but Ateez stole this year for me like no other. The concept, the lyrics, the unique sounds. They got 6 wins in a row, deserved.
well, my polemic opinion is: this world is sexist as fvck, we all know that. Polemics around boy groups ends on days, but polemics around girl groups are worse and drag a lot of more attention to the group in general. All the girl group rookies this year have a polemic attached to them: a member leaving the group, bully cases, super under age members, excluded member, hated member, extremely thin member... I am not saying the musics are bad, I love some of then. But the fact is: they will talk more about it, and talk more about the group, and gains more attention as the boy groups looks like all the same, their polemics are treated like nothing because they are men, and everyone compares them to BTS.
I was a boy group stan but now i listen to girl groups more ateez are m ultra boy group aside from them i love listening to txt , seventeen , enhypen , stray kids , treasure , exo and bts i liked tempest in rookie boy groups this year
I would say that with the constant release of music and related contents of the top boy groups like BTS, SVT, NCT leave no room for others to breakthrough. These groups have broken multiple records that are impossible to break by rookies coming from mid to small companies. But that doesn't mean that 4th gen boy groups are doing bad. TXT, SKZ, ENHYPEN are on top of their game and set the standard too high early soon. Also, the 4th gen rookie girl groups are killing it with million seller records, PAKs, daesang and hit songs like Next Level, Tomboy. It's just kpop is moving on too fast with the constant comebacks that it's hard to keep up unless you really look for it. I just hope that these rookie boy groups get their own spotlight too.
The quality over quantity argument barely makes sense to me. Most girlgroups I listen to have released full/mini albums and most of the b-sides weren't as good as the title track (to me!) whereas boy groups I listen to did the exact same thing but I liked almost every bside except for the title track lol. And I feel like a lot of people are with me on this. In general I do believe that quantity over quality only happens once a group releases music nonstop and you know they're rushing it like crazy and there's no creative input involved. And then I agree, because boygroups tend to do that more often than girl groups.
thanks for the shoutout! I think companies want to have the next “it” group and want a BTS upbringing (started with scrapes and now topping charts everywhere) so they create a ton of songs with different concepts to see what sticks and as each one releases (in my opinion) the quality of production goes down and down. The constant change in sound can sometimes be too much for a fandom. This doesn’t apply to *every* boy group.
@@babyangelally They most certainly can if BTS enlists, but from what is happening now: TXT is the most probable. That’s not to say that things won’t go wrong during that time frame.
@Random Kpop meme crap i think so too. I think SKZ will win Boygroup of the Year (imo they derserve it) since although BTS has not yet enlist, they have been going on hiatus and focusing more on individual projects. They do release Proof but that's an anthology album. While SKZ have been really active with Oddinary EP, a world tour and upcoming comeback this October, and I do really enjoy their new songs and their tt Maniac seems to be one of the few boygroup songs that is the most successful and famous this year
@@Chrono_topher Actually, Stray Kids are quite a bit more popular than TXT as of now. They are right in the midst of a massive, and incredibly fast spreading, popularity boom. And an seemingly unmatched level of production and personal drive that will likely cement that place rather solidly. If my numbers are right, they will have released around 18 tracks this year including the comeback set to release the beginning of October. I mean, those guys started the year with Oddinary which I believe has sold nearly 3 million copies in Korea, Japan and the US alone. Then they released an incredibly successful Japanese mini album. Then a single that I'm pretty sure they just did for fun. And now ANOTHER mini album that has been selling perhaps even as crazily as the first. Not to mention... They are actually really great and unique tracks. Don't get me wrong, TXT has been doing amazing! But they simply can't keep seem to up with Stray Kids. So, if they both keep going how they currently are... Between the sheer volume of music, to the crazy popularity of it... Yeah. Hands down Stray Kids. I would say TXT stood a chance of truly competing for the spot, if it wasn't for the fact that those 3RACHA boys are actually really amazing and prolific writers... I say this as someone who works in the industry as a lyricist. So their music isn't just popular for the sound or look. It actually has real lyrics and fully developed storytelling. In other words, they have everything they need to take over. And they are well on their way to doing so. I'm not saying that TXT isn't amazing in their own way, they are! Definitely! It's just that as of right now, they just aren't doing enough to compete with that. Basically, the difference is that Stray Kids are not just self produced, but they also have full control over their group and everything they do. That opens doors that most groups will never know exist. (Sadly...) In this case, that door is the ability to be releasing a second Korean album for the year. One that is doing incredibly where pre-orders are concerned. Specially for an album that was only announced a few weeks ago. That said! I really wish people wouldn't try putting another group in BTS spot like they're filling a void or something. It's so disrespectful to BTS, it implies that someone could take their place. It's theirs... That's not happening. And it's incredibly disrespectful to the other artist by implying that anything other than their own talent and hard work is what got them there. At the end of the day, there's enough room at the top for more than one group. I wish kpop fans understood that and would allow it. Then this comment would have read far differently, and been much shorter. Lol Both TXT and Stray Kids would be at the top, likely along with Ateez. Simple as that. Their music is very different from one another and yet they actually share a large number of fans. They all have a lot to offer, including actual talent! They also just really like eachother! Lol
@@DaddiesLittlePsycho You've overestimated oddinarys sales a lil. They were still under 2mln. Actually txts album sells better in the US and Korea but txt will be at disadvantage coz they have to complete w 3 bg from their own label. JYP will probably shovel money into the kids coz they are the only alternative for hybes 3 and their shtick(self made, self produced, overflowing quality content, sincerity) works.
This year for NCT dream was great, and I think the next year will be for the bg, cause this year debut a lot of gg, for that they have all the attention.
Ok so I have been into Kpop for only a year and I might be wrong but there is something that I've noticed which might explain why boy groups aren't as popular amongst general public. I see a LOT of hard core fans of boy groups, being a Stay I know how dedicated fans can be, but they sort of focus on only their ults? Like I see people prioritising only one boy group which they love along with maybe sometimes talking about other boy groups that are friends with their ults. With girl groups, I often see people call themselves "girl group stans" and are interested in a lot of them simultaneously, like of course there are exceptions but that's what I frequently see. Also, people who like boy groups are more likely to check out girl groups than girl group stans are likely to check out boy groups, because of the noisy perception like you said, and the choreography of girl group songs is usually easier to learn so a lot of people try them out on social media.
i don't think your reasoning is on the spot, because it's always been this way, just a bit more subtle: girl groups depend on the general public, boy groups on their niche fandoms, while some years ago this formula wasn't so severe, trying to diverge from it doesn't work, so with time it's becoming more and more apparent, boy groups make music for THEIR fandom, and only their fandom really interact with them, whilst girl groups keep doing music for the general population and hardly ever grow a fandom like the ones of boy groups. this year is the one that's gone the hardest on this formula, but it's always been there, it was a matter of time before something like this happened
I think its also because the gg debuts and comebacks recently have been extremely refreshing. they all have very unique concepts and different sounds. bgs on the other hand have been staying with the same popular sound and playing it safe. and when some bgs do something more experimental it doesn't get enough promotion or hype. a lot of ggs are breaking out of the "noise" genre, whereas (in general) bgs haven't really been doing that in droves like ggs have.
I think it’s because the boy groups in the past have already explored all these concepts before, even if you just take third gen boy groups, most of them don’t have a ‘signature sound/ genre’ because a lot of them explore a lot of different concepts over the course of their careers (with their own group identities)while say twice (love them) had a very consistent ‘cute’ sound until they transitioned to a refined elegant/ cute and black pink has just stayed in the girl crush kind of sound. Gg before werent exploring as wide of a range of musicalities so now all of the new debuts are doing what a lot of the bg did in gen 3 and early gen four (like txt and enhypen)
First, let me say that I am a casual kpop listener. I don't go hard-core stan for any one group, except for maybe Ateez, but that is more because of their all-around quality and performance aspect. I also don't normally go for the bright cutesy songs. I like the songs to be a little more "grown up". For example, I don't like Twice's early discography, but their stuff from the last few years are all bops. Granted I've only listened to the stuff they've made MVs for. GG this year have just crushed it with good, catchy songs. TomBoy, TippyToes and Attention, just to name a few. There have also been some really good female solo songs over the past year as well. Almost all of the singles from the Mamamoo members were jams. Honestly the only BG that have stood out to me this year are Stray and Ateez. Oddinary and Movement are hella good albums.
Not sure if you listen at all to ONEUS but they have some good songs-Malus imo is better than Bring It On (which I didn’t like a lot). P1Harmony’s Disharmony:Find Out is one of my all time favorite albums from any BG other than Ateez.
It’s wild to me when people say the big 4 hasn’t debuted a new boy group, but Xdinary Heroes are from JYPE. They are a band and have play instruments just like Day6.
@@zzz7103 but they are a kpop group? They do everything an idol group does except dance. They promote on music shows, went to ISAC, do variety shows, do fanmeets etc. KRock falls under the "Kpop" umbrella like any other genre. @@ivballz1222 no matter what!!!! they are a BAND not K-pop DANCE and Song GROUP..they simply are not in the category of boy group and they will never get the same amount of eyes on them even if they are the best boy band of South Korea.. you get it?? @@meerali2921 I see your point but I do think they share the same audience as KPop groups. most XDH fans I see are also stans of other idol groups. I mean have you seen what these company choose to name their boygroups. Random letters and numbers just aren't memorable. TNX, T1417, bae173, DKB, DKZ. Like why is this the approach they're going for with group names.
@@Tiw111 I got it wrong. It's T1419 (which proved my point). Pronounced as "tiilsailgu". As for bae173, The name BAE173 comes from "Before Anyone Else" and the numbers 173 represent 1 as the number for perfection and 73 as a perfect lucky number. oh.. my GOSH?????
Another factor is that the biggest gg rookies have attracted attention for other reasons - Ive had 2 IzOne members debut and Wonyoung is still being talked about constantly, Kep1er is an Mnet survival show group that had a lot of contention around it, and Nmixx, Le Sserafim, and New Jeans had scandals around their debuts (plagiarism accusations and song format criticism, a major bullying scandal, and questionable content for an underage group respectively). It’s the old saying that all publicity is good publicity. I can’t think of any rookie bg that’s been in the news nearly as much.
Yeah, I think the majority of gg has popularity because one member was part of an old group or scandals. Instead, bg has been very quiet.
Compared to GGs, BGs have less scandals than GGs. That’s not saying that they aren’t free however, especially when it comes to dating rumors/ships. GGs often edge out BGs in any form because of scandalization from saesangs or just normal fans.
That’s true, but Hanbin was an ex i-Land contestant and it makes sense why Tempest is more known than other rookie groups
i dont think its even one of the factors but probably the biggest factor. i didn't even stan a single one of these girl groups mentioned yet i couldn't go on twitter, tiktok or any sort of social media without hearing SO much about them. the popular members debuting, the scandals... people love drama and all popular people, and bgs haven't been involved in too much drama this year and no one really trended too much for their popularity.
Even then, with the two IOI members, they seem to manage them well so far.
*Looking at you Jellyfish, Pledis and Gugudan, Pristin*
also its interesting to me how almost all ggs that debuted this year had controversies and drama surrounding them, and it creates a lot of buzz and makes people interested, boygroups just came in quietly and had wifi paswords as their group name
wifi password 😭
not the wifi password💀
never heard a more true statement 😭
WIFI PASSWORDS 😭✋
It’s the fact that “NCT127” is my Netflix password😭😭😭😭💀
Groups like Stray Kids, Enhypen, Ateez and TXT release songs that not everyone can listen to, although I personally love it
I agree with this 💯
Heavily disagree with the "girlgroups bsides barely trend" statement.

I would add military service. There are several very popular boy groups that are on hiatus right now because of that.
That's a good point!!
i always found the opposing strengths and weaknesses of bgs and ggs really interesting. the former have a more dedicated fanbase that is willing to spend larger amounts of money on them, while the latter have a larger yet more casual audience that allows them to go viral and get known easier.
right now it seems like the gg attributes are one of the most vital things for stardom, so ggs are pulling through lately compared to most bgs.

@@asserm.8047 Same for me
Ateez is also my ult group.

Boy groups aren't necessarily flopping by any means. SKZ, SVT, TXT, Ateez, and Enhypen are all doing well. Newly debuted bgs on the other hand are basically invisible. trust me, NCT is king in Korea, we hear about them all the time over here in Seoul, their music is played everywhere. Because the internet people generally fish for clout trashing on the popular groups it creates the false reality that no one enjoys NCT music when it's clearly not the case.
That reminds me how i am yearning for a wayv comeback.
y’all complain that bg only make “noisy music” but when a bg does a unique concept y’all never pay attention to it
I forgot to add that ggs may be dominating because of all that “hate men” and that “women are superior” crap.
because people think that just because you are a men you are a creep and a bad person, but if you are a girl you are a angel that does nothing wrong.
(examples of sexualization in male idols are taemin from shinee and jungkook of bts)
ANOTHER example is the ages of idols when they debut. Some people think only females idols get to debut at the age of 14-16. (jungkook and taemin are also examples that men can also debut when they are 14-16)
yes, male idols have some privilege only because they are men, but that doesn’t mean they don’t work hard to be where they are.
and remember, women are NOT always angels, and men are NOT always creeps.

Tempest is one of the rookies that are doing the best. Their sales were pretty good
Honestly I am not a huge fan of boy group sounds.

Agree-I am not much of a GG stan but I hear a lot of gg because two of my kids like gg a lot. When their playlists are running sometimes they all just blend together in a way that I might say they sound the same but really they don’t. I think something similar probably leads to the “all bg sound the same.” The critics just don’t care to sort out the differences.
I mean I would never get Ateez, Stray Kids, or ONEUS confused-not even if it was a song I had never heard before. But that’s because I like these groups and know their unique sounds.
I swear every time I hear someone say all bg sound the same, I am like, are we listening to the same thing because you need to go clean your ears.

i’m a stay and luckily skz haven’t been hit by that bg flopping curse this year! i did notice that this did apply to some ggs but since theyre surrounded by a lot of success it doesn’t stand out too much. overall there are more gg songs that are just easier to listen to and have distinct sounds!
Yeah, honestly, I don't understand the "flopping" criticism at all actually. Boy groups have been seeing a huge jump in album sales across the board with all the top acts of the 4th gen pulling 1million sales this year. Like I get that they don't "go viral" but I fail to see how 1 million in sales and successful tours is "flopping."
Also, I'm a stay too and I take pride in the fact that SKZ have managed to be so successful with self produced songs.
That’s true. Also SM is going to debut new boy group not under NCT next year
I agree that a big 4 or mid sized comapny not debuting a bg recently plays a large factor in this. Most of the rookie bgs are from small companies with basicallly little to no promotion.(may be except tempest and xdinary heores)
As a gg stan who can confidently say that I have heard every single boy group debut this year, I will recommend some nugu new bg releases I really enjoyed:
•Nine.i-Parallel Universe(+highly recommend the whole mini album)
•Tan-Du Du Du, Walking on the moon, Midnight
•Trendz-Villain,Re:Daybreak,Forever More
•Blank2y-Touch
Big4 doesn't exist, BIG3 & HYBE
yeah, it’s really just the marketing. out of all rookies this year the popular ones came from HYBE and Starship (though considered a mid-tier company, they have produced a lot of popular artists and they have a lot of resources), other rookies may they be girl groups or boy groups from small have received little to no attention (yes, there are a lot of girl groups that debuted this year, and a lot of them are stuck in nugudom). CSR, TAN, and CLASS:y are really great groups that have sadly not gotten much attention because they’re from really really small companies.

Tbh I don't really like the tiktok dance challenges since the start. I find it kinda forced tbh...
I agree. I feel like it's a part of routine now. almost every release this year(especially ggs) has that part of the choreography that is obviously for dance challenges. I feel like they're forcing the virality onto the song.
@@aristocraft2000 Yes. When I first saw the hand part of the choreo in Pop! - Nayeon I was like "That is def for a tiktok challenge, no doubt"

I hate tiktok sorry tiktokers
Ateez’s album was my fav bg album this year till now with oddinary coming to a close second.
As for the korean general public, it's no surprise why most bgs flopped in kcharts bcs of the prejudice that knets have with bgs in general. I mean they pretty much said themselves that they won't support bgs after 3rd gen anymore 🥲😭
ATEEZ (my ult group) for example had the potential to be viral with their songs Wave and Utopia just by how these two songs fits korean general public taste (there are several times both these songs were charting on kcharts randomly in the middle of the night, like what 😭 but didn't get its viral moments just bcs of that "prejudice".

But yeah, I think the fact that girl group songs are going viral has a lot to do with it.
domino goes viral on tiktok every week, and christmas eveL was all over tiktok last winter
Ateez also appeared on Billboard as well and they are from a smaller company.

And btw I think you are the biased one here, but this is not a dick measuring contest.
but I think it’s mainly the fact that more girlgroups from bigger companies have debuted than boygroups
"All boy groups only do noisy concepts"
Oneus: Are we a joke to you?
Thank you for putting Same Scent :D Oneus have made a true gem this year and I'm happy that they've already won three times on Music Shows
That depends on the group because it’s been a pretty good year for Stray Kidz from what I’ve seen
This is such a lie, twice is an outlier when it comes to this but no bgs comeback twice as much as girl groups, Ever heard of the ggs hiatuses
Lol
@@DaddiesLittlePsycho i think only twice(or jyp groups in general) has comebacks very often.
Literally nct 127 has so many good bsides
yes nct albums is my fav this year 💚
I don't understand who said nct is flopping !! Winning a daesang with sticker and selling many copies ,2 baddies as I saw was liked by many !!! I don't see them flopping !
NCT DREAM is doing just fine and literally breaking records left and right, physicals to digitals. 🤗
It's kind of sm's and NCT's fault that their title track always sound extremely noisy and flat out annoying, their b-sides are some of the most incredible music in kpop, but the casual listener will never check them out if all their title tracks sound noisy
recently saw people on twitter discovering 127 actually makes good music it’s quite frustrating when we’ve been saying they have amazing bsides but no one listens bc of their preconceived notion that they only make noise music check out their killing voice and new album btw 🙏
about damn time 😭
It doesn’t help that it seems like most bg’s are coming back with the same concept in different fonts.
Onesus 😭
ONEUS* but ONESUS is kinda nice hahaha
@@dumpling2975 noooo i hate when auto correct does that bc they ate literally one of the only bg’s I stan 😭 Forgive me
@@rainboworldstan I SWEAR ITS AUTO CORRECT.
Me too
Treasure reallly stood out this year with their mini album especially with their title track Jjkjin and the Viral song “Darari” I hope that u will notice them too 🥺
Treasure didn’t really stick to one concept they really show every comeback that ther’re versatile

Also other bgs aren't flopping either. they r all doing great numbers and are stable but uts just that the impact they had this year on kpop in general wasn't as great
But nowhere on the Korean charts
@@tj.8924 maniac alone has 113M on Spotify. That’s on par with a lot of gg hits this year. They’re doing fine
For you!! For me txt are doing really great
I think the tittle should be ''WHY ROOKIE BG are flopping this year? '' because SKZ, TXT, ATEEZ, ENHYPEN and others really have been kicking ass, meanwhile there are tons of gg that debut on 2022 including 2 from hybe and 1 from JYP so, that its another factor.
When one of the big three or HYBE debuts a BG then you'll see the hype, because people will be intersted in other rookie bg that will compete with them on award shows so basically there is a need of a BG from the big three or HYBE to make rookie bg relevant again.

@@Tiw111 it's the thumbnail that's getting me tho 💀 I like ur point of view tho
I think girl groups mostly tend to pick a concept and stick with it. When you hear Black Pink has a new album, you know what the concept will be. When you hear Aespa has a new album, you know what the concept will be. Boy groups are more likely pick a storyline and stick with it. The concept changes to fit where they are in the story, either within the album or across multiple albums. If I want to hear a different concept from a girl group, I will most likely choose a different group. If I want to hear a different concept from a boy group, I will most likely choose a different song or album for the same group. I think that's why boy groups have such loyal fandoms.
Yes
I think bg who are doing great are seventeen, nct, ateez, stray kids, txt and the boyz, other than that I barely know when there’s a boy group comeback bc they don’t get my attention. Meanwhile ggs are giving us bops after bops
just because mcnd had their lowest sales this album doesn’t mean bgs haven’t been holding their weight

DISCLAIMER: I'm a girl group stan but I'll try to be unbiased. I think there are a lot of reasons behind this, and I'll write them down (sorry, this is goig to be long). Also, English is not my first language, so I'm sorry if i make some mistakes.
1) LACK OF SAME - GENDER AUDIENCE
In the past (but even now) boy groups were generally more popular than girl groups, becuase they have most of the times a huge audience of girls.
2) NOT SIMILAR CONCEPTS, BUT SIMILAR AESTHETHICS
A lot of boy groups have original concepts, but they seem really similar, because agencies just wants to make male idols look like an ideal boyfriend rather than an actually idols. They have similar hair styles, similar fashion and similar photography. Their music videos looks dark and badass, but that's it. It's sad to say but sometimes a colorful music video or outfit will make people more interested and their probably check the song out beacuse of just aesthetics.
3) BTS
BTS are actualy the most popular K-Pop group, but also the most popular boy group.Certainly BTS deserve this spotlight, but I hink that they're overshadowing smaller boy groups.
4) STEREOTYPES AGAINT MALE IDOLS
This is not just something that happens in K-pop, but there are a lot of stereotypes that affect men that a lot of people don't often think about (I'm talking as a girl).
For retro songs I recommend Homerun by Seventeen
for a retro bg rec, check out Candy Sugar Pop by astro, Cherry by ab6ix.
mmm well, some of your points contradict a little, like first you say bg concepts aren't limited, only their aesthetics, but then you say their concepts ARE limited. then some of your points are undermined by groups like astro, pentagon, younite, tempest, verivery, bae173, the boyz, ab6ix - groups who've done cute, visually appealing, even varied concepts and aesthetics, but are still considered solidly mid-tier at best (and that's for the groups who've had a few years to grow - the rookies are practically nugus). that list is probably even bigger, since there's still more bgs from small companies that could be up to lord knows what that nobody ever hears about. i think the closest to the truth is your final point, that there simply hasn't been enough bonus interest (whether from a big company or from a popular prior group) in the rookie bgs this year. it's always been a competitive and saturated industry, but this year the biggest ggs have started with some kind of reputation headstart, while the bg rookies are starting from scratch.
(old gg bsides are resurfacing though!)
now gg title tracks have no sort of a blueprint, they just have a huge variety. there are groups who brought back the 80s, 90s, 2000s, 2010s (I'm talking about from 2020 to present time), and there are groups who also have experimental, kpoppy, quirky like concepts (very reminiscent of the 2010-2015 kpop) and just a whole bunch of things that perks up my interest whenever I stumble upon them.
I remember when after so many different sounds and genres, SKZ blew up with Gods Menua and now everyone’s trying to replicate that Gods Menu hence why ppl think “every BG does noise music” when they’re really not
I have a theory that x1 disbanding caused the downfall of rookie bgs. this is objectively the izones girls year and if x1 were able to have the same longevity as izone we would be seeing all post x1 debuting now. the 3 months weren't enough to build the careers of the members and now they're groups are suffering
that's actually a good point
@@markigirl2757 so much could have happened with x1 they could have been one of the most influential bgs its sad their time was cut short it really screwed with everyone makes me sad seeing all post x1 groups stuck in nugudom if they would have stayed together im sure their popularity would have easily tranferred to their respective groups right now
Literally if X1 didn’t disband they would be one of the biggest 4th gen bg next to txt , skz en and ateez
It’s really The X1 course
I miss them everyday *subs*
You truly raise the good point with "no matter how many boygroups come with brighter and lighter concepts it still won't be successful if general kpop stan always have fixed mindset that bg is all about noise music". I think I have some opinions why 4th kpop bg is failing in SoKor at least because some 4th gen groups does get popularity overseas:
1. X1 who could be the Iz*one equivalent for bgs that help a lot for mid companies bgs to getting more recognition is disbanded very quick before the group itself gain recognition from GP
2. I think korean GP just completely shift from bg music and seems interested more to khiphop scene music such as Be'O or Sokodomo as the substitute for bgs
the khiphop scene is truly thriving rn in korea you are on to something
Yes
9. Bgs choose to do less promotion (like TxT).
bgs mostly focus on their fanbase rather than the general public right? is this why their promotions are cut short to go on tours and other fan related things, i wish their companies put more effort into putting them out there and sending them on variety shows
@@vvt66410 yes
That being said though, i definitely prefer their songs from last year or before. i’m really looking forward to dkz’s comeback, hopefully they can break this cycle
edit: doom du doom and same scent are exceptions tho, i immediately loved them
I am not really a bg Or gg stan but seriously this year I am listening lots of gg songs More than bgs
honestly kpop girl group songs get so much hype because of Tik Tok and the companies often cater these songs to these social media platforms.
No one big company debuted a boy group of course all the attention are having gg this year
Next year bg from big company will debut is going to be the same thing as now
This year rookie boy groups are from small company of course they are not hyped or getting much attention from kpop fans
But it’s a shame that bg this year are really looked down because they are not from big4

It's sad
omg yes superkind 😭 can’t wait for their first cb
2022 is literally ggs and seventeen’s year argue with the wall
Seventeen has been SLAYING this year. It’s like seventeen is getting better every comeback 😭
Fact
I don’t know how promotion goes for other groups but this is an example
i wish the puppy interview was out right now too 😭 but i think they might be waiting to release it for maxident promos. not sure, but it could be possible… i still have no idea why it hasnt been posted yet ;-;
div1 sucks at promoting skz. They did interviews with tumblr and please do tell me who cares about tumblr at this day and age, it is not even a trendy platform anymore and it won't make new people curious about skz, the only people watching those interviews are already stays... They really need to send skz to popular shows or something because they are just wasting their potential atp
@@werikar2203 no cause if we discussing SKZ success, the variety shows and other promotions is definitely NOT a factor
the only boygroup comeback i remember, next to whatever Straykids is doing, was Ateez. Im kind of a casual listener of kpop so i basically see whatever is trending and know of about 10 GG comebacks and 1 BG comeback. Its a cycle, where whatever is trending, gets boosted really hard and no one sees whatever is not trending.
No idea if you’re a stay (I am) but I want you to know that “next to whatever Stray Kids is doing” gave me a good chuckle
@@LovelyIKnowx im not really into the fandoms, but you could consider me a stay if you want to. I just listen to them so much, they flood my recommendations
Me but with txt and the boyz only
When people talk about variety I feel like most people just talk about concept variety not variety in terms of musics.
They wld hv achieved even more if their company did better for them
Omg this, i agree so much
For me it’s that I haven’t really seen many boy groups bringing anything new to the table, the darker concept that a lot of boy groups do is fine imo. I think there’s many different ways to do the same concept but they rarely ever do that, the lack of identity makes my excitement for these group die really quickly
You may check Oneus, they always do different concept each comeback but still have their own identity, they even got a title as stage geniuses and concept kings, and kings of expression
@@justicefixer I second this: Oneus really do have their unique sound.
Another group with a completely different concept is Kingdom.
check out onf, oneus or onlyoneof 😃
@@justicefixer
Those titles were given by whom ? Their fangirls and some kpop tea channel ?
@@kant.68 By the TV show, everytime they appear on a tv show for example weekly idol they are called stage geniuses , even during road of kingdom all the other idols keep praising their face expression which earned them the title of the expression
As a boy group Stan I can agree with you
I do like their music but I feel so bad for them
I feel like skz have still been doing well, with oddinary topping billboard and selling really well, maxident looks promising as well, but aside from them yeah it really feels like no other bg has blown up like before
I love that I.N fancam!!! 💗💗💗💗
In fact, it's funny because that feminism of marketing makes us believe that women are being more valued, but in fact, in many female groups, good and educated girls who do not question and feel straight predominate.
and you spoke!!
I'm exactly you but I love Ateez.
I stan Ateez and they may not be big before but they are not flopping...maybe they are not talked about much before or any other occassions but the group doesnt miss and now they are being talked abt to because of exploring new stuffs😭💖
they've always been different and great at what they do from the get go.

@Random Kpop meme crap I don't think skz or txt will be able to reach bts level of success
Ikr nct dream managed to compete with hot sauce records, even gaining higher sales this year + multiple achievements
But noise music is so good 😭
IKR ㅠㅠ
I only find it good and enjoyable if the group has decent vocals and decent rap, but when bg do noise music with a meh vocals its kinda irritating.
@@heart8143 yep, especially when it’s cringe lyrics
i don't think your reasoning is on the spot, because it's always been this way, just a bit more subtle: girl groups depend on the general public, boy groups on their niche fandoms, while some years ago this formula wasn't so severe, trying to diverge from it doesn't work, so with time it's becoming more and more apparent, boy groups make music for THEIR fandom, and only their fandom really interact with them, whilst girl groups keep doing music for the general population and hardly ever grow a fandom like the ones of boy groups. this year is the one that's gone the hardest on this formula, but it's always been there, it was a matter of time before something like this happened
I dont even think they’re flopping they’re still seeing success, its just that they’ve been outshined by ggs this year
It’s wild to me when people say the big 4 hasn’t debuted a new boy group, but Xdinary Heroes are from JYPE. They are a band and have play instruments just like Day6.
They are band, not kpop group, that's why nobody mention them in this conversation.
@@zzz7103 but they are a kpop group? They do everything an idol group does except dance. They promote on music shows, went to ISAC, do variety shows, do fanmeets etc. KRock falls under the "Kpop" umbrella like any other genre.
