Nicholas is definitely going thru an identity crisis. From the outside, looking in, he has a stable and loving 2 parent home life but wants to be perceived as anything but. Hopefully, by now, he's learned to appreciate what his parents worked hard to provide him. I can definitely relate. I'm a black man who grew up as a military brat until the age of 12. I had both parents in the house until I was 18. When my father retired and we relocated to St Louis, I immediately noticed I didn't fit in with my peers. As a result, I did a lot of dumb sh*t to try and fit in. Unfortunately, it took getting locked up at the age of 21 before i realized what i was actually given. Thankfully, my mistakes weren't serious enough to hinder my ability to become a productive member of society.

That's so sad that some of the values in the black community have people feeling ashamed to be well taken care of. I know people who were made to feel ashamed or guilty that their parents had enough to provide for them. Our community has to do better with teaching their kids not to try to produce evil out of each other. Especially for boys, it seems like they are affected much more often and more significantly.

I almost ended up in the same place for the same reasons except it was a mental institution, not a prison cell. I think there’s a major disconnect with the older generations, and the younger generations in the way that they were brought up, and theres a desire to belong and be reconciled within the two in the black communities. Some of us are still oppressed to this day, and some of us are blessed enough to be privileged black Americans. I was definitely called out for acting white growing up and I felt weird around my peers. It wasn’t until I got to college that it started becoming clear to me that I don’t need to fit in. I just need to be aware and have compassion, and be SLOW to speak definitely helps especially if you don’t understand something which is what I don’t think the white mom understands.

Outing a teenager or even a young person in front of their peers on the question of their sexuality is def a fucked up thing to do. I can understand how someone can innocently make the mistake, but during this time? This was 2006, that's seriously fucked up.
"beautiful black creature" I give her a 100% pass. It's poetry. Calling something a "beautiful creature" isn't some thing that's unheard of. It's a term that's used all the time especially when someone is being endearing. It was bad poetry, that's all. White people have high social awareness around black people too, they just aren't used to it as much because black Americans are much smaller percentage of the population. She even talks about how she feels like she can't "just talk" without being politically incorrect. She's an old white lady that's hardly been around black people and didn't watch the movie Friday even once. Give her a break. Her husband needs to chill though. He just can't be proven wrong and is a lost cause.

When the mom from the white family went to that pool hall and the bartender was iffy about giving her coffee before a credit card was presented, I think she started to realize that prejudice does exist, and it was a tough pill to swallow. She could’ve rejected that, but at least she chose to be honest in how she felt. Her husband, on the other hand, simply doesn’t want to learn. I heard they got divorced after this show. That’s probably one of the reasons why. He seems really unreasonable and seems to have underlying issues with race. He couldn’t admit to racism around whites in his makeup, but the minute he got around black people, he chose to finally see the racism. The problem is, he forgot he was literally wearing blackface and that what he was experiencing wasn’t racism because he was being viewed as a black person. (although I do think his makeup is the worst of all 6 characters) Hoewever, he just couldn’t get past his bias.

Bruno has an Italian background. I think his family was discriminated against for that background until they succeeded and "had money" and now he is somewhat respected due to money. So in his mind, racism no longer exists. But i guarantee you, white people know he is not white, that he is an "other" and they can't place him and they still say racist things about other races to him. They think he is a part white man with a great tan and that makes him acceptable but i guarantee that he still experiences racism and it reminds him of being "poor, undesirable and Italian" when he was younger and it still hurts he just pushes it down inside him and ignores it like it doesn't exist.

The white mom is trying Forsure but it’s very heard to unlearn the culture of racism. From my perspective as a black man that has exclusively gone to pwi’s, a lot of Caucasian people never have to experience what it’s like to be the only blacks person at the party, or having to prove yourself as “not like the rest of them” to the everyone you meet. They will never understand how me wearing a collared shirt while walking at night on an Iowan campus was the difference between me getting stopped or being looked at as a regular student. And most importantly without understanding the true history of our world-from a white vantage point-the current state of blacks has been framed to be the natural evolution of black American culture (“he takes pride in being stereotypically black”-Rose) when it was the single most tampered with society in the world(I can defend this claim with historical evidence). That being said, unless people get out in the world and get out of their shell and experience other culture, it is very difficult to empathize with others. The white dad on the other hand seems to be highly emotionally unintelligent and if he is like that to people who look like him(ie asking the bartender if she’s ever been with a black man in ep 2) then that would extend even more to people he deems as integrally different than himself aka the black family and blacks as a whole. The black mother annoys me for not at least attempting to open up and share a human experience. Though that might be the former Coon in me talking (I’m reformed now thanks to my beautiful black fiancée) since some black people have had so much generational trauma including (rape of both sexes, murder, institutional biases out the ass, constant medical malpractice and too many other injustices to name) I can fully understand being fed up.

It seems like Nicholas has been happy "not paying any attention to" racism, or maybe not paying any attention to raciSTS. I don't pay any attention to racists, either. I'm pretty sure that would be a good strategy for everyone to have. Generally speaking, If something is insignificant to you, it can't have power over the way you choose to live your life. I think most people would be a lot happier if race was insignificant. Then again, to others, race is everything. Either way, Nicholas' parents seem annoyed by his lack of regard for racism and/or his claims of never experiencing it.

To me the biggest problem was that the people in the neighbourhood they went to weren't used to cameras. It doesn't seem like such a big deal but in a lot of places bringing a camera around is just a no-no. Like just imagine chilling like any other day and seeing a bunch of cameras filming you without explaining you why. These people were probably wondering what was up especially since it's pretty obvious that the couple wasn't from around here. In my experience it happened a lot of time that white people or strangers in general would film some communities and use the sequels in a totally different documentary and stuff. Most time they come to these kind of places it's to talk abt problems such as drugs, diabetes, lack of working people, racism and gang (rarely abt culture) so people were probably more trying to find out why there was cameras more than staring at a mixed couple. If it was just bc of that, they would've gotten over it especially since these are old folks.

Because it’s dangerous as a black person to ignore racism. Just because he dosent want to deal with it dosent mean it dosent exist around him. So many black teenagers follow within foot steps of their friends of different race thinking they would get the same slap on the risk that their friend may receive. As soon as black people raise their voice in the slightest we are seem as aggressive. I’m sure his views changed as he got older and was more independent.

The mom *yells* at her daughter. For trying to see both sides and grow as a person. It’s concerning

The black man looked like he was wearing gang colors. He was going to kill me.
That right there is a perfect example of the perceptions the show is trying to challenge. It's not *racism* it's *racial* bias. Constructed from all the stereotypes he's witnessed in media.
