Just wanna thank you for the video. About 150 students of mine follow along with your plans to make this cutting board each year in our high school woodshop class.
Oh wow thats amazing! I'm glad to hear that a highschool woodshop still exists out there!
I wish we had that. We did some ret*rded sh*t with tools nobody ever uses.
There can never be enough video like this for new folks starting out. Nice to see something being shown without the need for the high priced equipment that most new folks don't have.
I'd personally like to see more in the realm of minimal equipment levels. Nice work and worth a sub.
Thank you I appreciate it 👍
Great video very informative and helpful for us new guys ..
Starting out? Starting out means a circular saw, a power drill, a square and ruler, and a hammer. When you have gotten your shop to the level of table saw fitted in to a modular stand, you are past the point of just starting out. A table saw or miter saw are all major investments to your wood working shop. And when you have more wood clamps than what is on the shelf at your building supply store ... yeah you are past the starting out phase.
This project may seem like a quick easy project with minimal tools, but the project ease is a direct result of having a full carpenter shop of tools.
@@superdave8248 And as a new woodworker, I don't know if I could pull this off with just a circular saw and the other tools you listed. I don't trust myself to be able to get straight cuts with a circular saw and I *definitely* can't afford a table saw.

Great video! It's amazing how you managed to create such a beautiful cutting board with just a few basic tools. This is super encouraging for beginners who don't have access to a full workshop. Thanks for sharing these practical tips!
Man, Im never getting tired watching people doing magic
He really is great, isn't he? haha
Magic? He literally just gliued some straight boards together then sanded them. Your bar for what is Magic is EXTREMELY low.
I really appreciate that you were able to be very detailed and didn't make me feel bad about not having the most expensive equipment. Thank you!
The first chopping board video I found that didn’t involved using a jointer.
Great stuff. Subbed.
1:33 a little love tap from the offcut of the table saw is always fun.
This is really great for beginners. And unlike some other videos this one has CC. As a member of the DEAF COMMUNITY I find this VERY HANDYB&=THOUGHTFUL.
no mineral oil baths? no cringe shots of your family and kid to emotionally manipulate people into buying your products? subscribed!
Haha I love this
Oil is optional if using the right wood. Oil is to protect the wood under constant wet conditions… oil is not to protect you. Mineral oil is a human safe oil.
@@heycouper1835mineral oil is a petroleum product, it should not go in our body.
“Uh oh look who we have here. Haha it’s my little shop helper. (5 year old girl hands him some Titebond 2)
“Don’t forget to Smash 💥 that like button and Hey gang? Why don’t you subscribe as well.”
It is cringe. I also weld and fabricate and none of that nonsense goes on in the welding community.
@@SeamlessFab but it works, so people do it. I don't mind it if it helps creators.
Awesome video! Simple and not overly complicated to someone new (like myself). As someone that laser engraves onto wood and occasional cutting boards I’ve decided to, instead of buying already made boards to engrave on, to make my own and I’ve got minimal tools. All the tools you used here I have as well so I’ll have to try!
Wow the tip about ripping the ripping consistent size strips on the table saw but using the cutoff was golden! Makes me feel dumb for not thinking of it! Thanks for the video! I had a planer that was my dads but he got his shop complete and took it back so now all I got is a jointer...lol! This video is great thank you!
Ha! Thanks!
This was great! I need to make a BIG board to help with my bread making obsession. I can easily adapt these methods to a big build with my basic tools and skills. Thank you!
Awesome video! Finally..... a tutorial on cutting boards that is realistic for newbies! 💯
These instructions were great, super simple, and the boards were a lot of fun to make. I like the thin stripe over the thick ones in the packaged kits because they look more elegant. I couldn't find the same widths, but I had extra lengths of 3/4" leftovers, so I just added them up to 8" across for the thinner main boards. A+ would do again. These are good travel-friendly gifts, too - they pack away easily!
wow, beautiful job! and I like the tip at 5:30 with the clamping calls, at 75 years old I have started a little wood working again and will add these to my list to make, I have made cutting boards, chess boards, etc years ago. Thanks for sharing.
This is the *best* video I've ever seen on cutting boards. Fantastic job, especially for the beginner audience.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
This was brilliant! I made 6 small boards for serving purposes in this style. Really easy and quick work for a very nice outcome.
Those boards are so clean and elegant, thanks for all of the great tips, I've been using a water bottle for glue-ups lately because it was conveniently pre-filled after a bike ride, but a spray bottle would make so much more sense.
Yep I always keep a spray bottle handy for water popping 👍
Awesome video! All the other "see how simple it is" requires a tool park and 40 hours, only to sell them for $25. This process really makes sense to me.
Thx for sharing the steps. Like it. Watching from Ontario Canada 😊
Superb tutorial (especially for amateurs like me).
I want to show it's definitely possible! 🙌
Right! It opened my eyes some!
I finish my boards the same way exempt I do one more step of “driving the oil in” with a heat gun then leaving them over night then buffing off. Great video
nice! I've never used a heat gun for this.
Thank you for the video. I have been wanting to make a cutting board for some time now and this video has given me the push!! Thanks again for a quality tutorial 👌
You're very welcome!
Gorgeous! I've seen a bunch of cutting boards that have a shallow channel routered in about an inch around the entire perimeter (I suppose to prevent liquid from falling over the edges?).
If you have the router it could be a nice touch.
Excellent video. Wish I had your workshop setup. As someone who uses wooden chopping boards I suggest you make them bigger and include a juice channel which you could add with your router. They are beautiful though.
Thank you so much......this was by far the best instructional video.....guess I will go purchase a table saw
Buttery smooth boards and a buttery smooth tutorial/video. A UA-cam primer in instructional video production, extremely well done. Having only a 6" planer, I've always shied away from cutting boards, but you know what you've done, now?!
Hey I used to have a 6 inch delta jointer/planer and made it work 👍 you gotta use what you have for sure. Have a great day!
I got asked to make a chopping board but didn't think I could, now I have no excuse. Thanks.
Get er done!
Thank you for providing a simple method, im a virgin to woodworking but I want to make something nice. Not to mention I'm working with the basics tool wise. I cant wait to execute, thanks again
Thank you for the wonderful tutorial. Have my 1st one gluing as we speak and I can wait to see them when they are finished! Getting 6 gifts ready for the holiday season!
Awesome!
Finally a cutting board tutorial without a planar and and edger. Thank you so much!!
You're very welcome Justin!
That is one of the best tutorials I’ve seen for newbies and pros alike!
AWESOME! I'm glad you think so.
Walnut maple and Cherry. Always winning combos
Great video, brother. You explained every detail clearly and concisely. Good job.
Great job is simple to build, and have some maple and Red Oak, to make some additional cutting boards. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
great video for a wood lover. even if I am starting completely everything is clear and well explained. work as before which I adore. the only trick is, WHERE TO FIND THESE SPECIES OF WOOD when all the DIY stores sell pine 🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️🤨🙄
Thanks for the easy to follow video! What dimension of lumber do you tend to prefer for your cutting board projects?
Great video, I showed this to my woodworking students and they enjoyed it. Thanks for it.
Wow that's amazing I hope I did a good job for your students!
@@MWAWoodworks you did a great job
Just stumbled across your channel (10 items needed in your shop), and went down the rabbit hole. Great videos, great tutorials, great advice. Now to make some cutting boards, and more importantly cutting board wax.
Thanks Brendan! That makes me so happy 👍
I did this over the weekend, and had fantastic results! Learned a lot as well. A few questions....
1. How do you keep from getting glue all over the bars of your clamps?
2. Can you make a video specifically about planing cutting boards? I bought a planer after realizing how much Sanding it required. 🤣
I haven't been into long grain cutting boards but must admit that your design is very nice and not too labor intensive. You've sold me - well done!
For clarity, what kind of cutting boards do you prefer? Long grain makes sense because the knife marks from use will be against the grain. Is there another simple style like this you'd recommend trying?
@@onethousandwords I made a few of these and gave them away but one. I admit that they are nice and work well and the recipients liked them. That said, I've made only edge grain prior but you are right that it's more involved and takes more wood. Knife marks are the same regardless, but the edge boards are much thicker (about 1.25").
Outstanding video. I have no tools or skills, but I think I'd actually try this. Thanks man!!!!!
Thank you
Short and sweet cost effective way to get a custom cutting board. Thanks!
You almost suckered me in, and then you got to the table saw - something that I as a new woodworker definitely don't own and can't afford at the moment. Maybe there's some magical way to pull off this "simple" project with just a circular saw, but if there is I haven't found it yet.
I had the same thoughts as well looking at these kinds of videos. But have come to the conclusion that a circular saw is just a must have for this kind of work
If you put a dowel about the same thickness of the wood you are gluing between the board and the face of the clamp the dowel will tranfer al the pressure to the middle of the board and your joints won't twist in the clamps.
Your bords look great.
I have saved a frairly big piece of juniper hoping to one day beeing able to make an end grain cutting bird from it.
But I have neither a table saw nor a planner jointer.
I think that it has to wait until I have some more machines.
Appreciate you, Matt! This video is great at demystifying and lowering that barrier to entry for folks. Also love your wax recipe and methodology there. Has served me quite well.
Glad I could help you Herb!
Great job but there are a hundred different ways to make cabinets some much faster.thanks for the info And may God bless you.🙏👍
How often after the initial coating of wax/mineral oil, do you recommend reapplying the combo? Is it a one and done kind of thing or would you tell your customers 1 month, 3 month, etc, etc?
My first board was just solid maple and used a router and sander. Worked well, looks nice, and didn't have to worry about the issues with gluing wood.
Fantastic job on this video man! They keep getting better and better!
Thanks a ton!
Excellent tip for ripping thin stock @ 1:55
These boards are really nice looking and you made the process extremely approachable for those of us who aren't experts and don't have high end fancy tools to work with yet. When I try to jump to much more complex designs and to using tools I haven't really mastered yet confidence drops and frustration rises. I'm saving a link to this video for future reference because it fits my ability and tool collection perfectly. thank you so much for the time spent making this.
Awesome!
Where do you get your exotic lumber for your cutting boards?? Also what sizes are these boards? I would appreciate any help with this step!! Thank you so much!!
Awesome job. How thick are those boards?
Just started my sled THANK YOU.
Thank you for this video. I will be making my first cutting boards for gifts this year. What is the best size to start with?
Thanks for the advice!!! Will definitely try it! New Subscriber
Thank you 🙌 glad I could help
Great video really nice for people who are just starting
That's great! Glad I could help!
Nice video. Did you sand the smaller pieces before gluing them? Also, how would you get smaller pieces for like a side grain glue up and make sure they are at 90 degrees to glue?? Thanks
for the cutting board, I was wondering what size is commonly used in American homes? Thanks a lot 😀
You can add a little sprinkle of salt on the gluing areas to keep it from slipping during the clapping.
This video is so helpful for me!
Awesome 👍
great video. audio is fine.your voice and direction was easy to follow.
I like the narrower strips. Thanks for the great idea Some GREAT advice thank you
Tomorrow I‘ll follow this video in the shop 👍🏻
Great Work! Thanks for sharing.
Superb beginner’s (me) tutorial. Thanks a lot
Saw the first 10 seconds and thought... take my like, take a sub and have a comment for the algo!
Looking forward to being able to learn how to do some wood working and make a cheap chopping bord without having to drop $50k on machinery!
Thanks 👍😊
Wow, that's cool. Really good step by step video, and it's totally complete turotial for me.
I just planing to produce some kitchenware and chopping board was the first that come in mind.
Great works Sir. Really Glad i've watching your video here. 👍👍👍.
I'll asking more about mineral oil on your "homemade finish" Video.
I hope you can help me out, by answer my question.
Thank you so mich
You're very welcome!
A sprinkle of fine salt on top of the glue stops the wood sliding around when clamping
What was the final size of those awesome boards? Loved how you explained everything on how you make them.
8x10
Thanks
Sweet techniques. Thanks.
This is a really awesome tutorial. Can't wait to make my first board!
Literally was just going to say the same exact thing.
Best video I've come across in a long time
Some good tips! Thanks for sharing.
You're welcome Bruce!
Have an idea for Christmas presents for the family
These look great.
Thank you Angie!
Thanks for this excellent video, you have taken the trouble to edit it and that is much appreciated. There are so many useful tips that I have picked up.
Thanks Brett 👍
does it hold up well from the knife?? Thinking about making a couple. Also would this work as a primary (like as a main cutting board someone would use) cutting board, or just one for simple tasks.
Nice. But do I need a special wood glue ? Because in my city only one type of glue i think it's general propose..
So first time I’m goi g to try a cutting board, wish me luck
Simple and helpful. Thank you.
Could I do this with a hand saw, a hammer, sandpaper and glue?
I've never hated myself enough to try it 🤣🤣
sprinkle some salt on the glue before clamping. that will help prevent the pieces from sliding around. BigBrain
Greetings from Russia!
Nice work, will do same
So can you just go to like a lowes to get this wood? Or is there a special place
You have awesome video sir. Clear, concise instructions. Truly appreciate it.
Thank you 🙏
Small tip. Put some wax paper on the rails of your clamps. This will keep any runoff glue off your clamping bars and you do not have to clean them .
Great tip 👌
Love your work, Cheers John
Thank you sir
Great video
Thanks! I might be able to do that.
it is interesting to make wooden goods, only very time consuming, if next to regular job, need to buy materials and instruments also workshop is needed, i think i could do something like that during all my life not regular
Thank you for sharing! Can I use this cutting board to cut meat or chop bones?
Thank you!
That's nice,dude! Greeting from Russia;)
Hello there!
