  • BEING BLACK IN GERMANY
after many years residing in Europe I thought it would be interesting to share my stories as an african living in Berlin. I am going to mainly share my experiences as african in diaspora and focus mainly on things I have experience as a being a black woman working and living in Germany. Like many countries I have traveled too, sometimes I do experience negative comments and racial attacks in Germany which are purely focused on me being black.
With such an afro I cant hide my blackness...in this video racism I experience as when I am living in Germany.

Hello, so this is my first time commenting on your page. I am a woman of African American heritage. I want to let you know that you make feel great pride to be a woman of color. The way you speak and present yourself. The PRIDE that you have of your Africanism is felt through the screen. You are not trying to change yourself for someone else ideal of beauty. With great respect, I look to my sisters in all of Africa to keep me grounded by showing how proud they are to be African. You haven't covered your crown with a European wig or lightened your God-given beautiful complexion. You are sending a subliminal message of " Black is absolutely beautiful too!" Thank you. I mean it from the bottom of my heart.

Well said, well said. The more we embrace our features, hair etc the more it becomes normal. It's so refreshing to see a black woman embracing her natural hair.

Love, love love your big hair. It takes me back to my seventies. To think that you nearly bought an Afro wig when you have your own long , healthy crowning glory. And the more you treasure it then the more you will appreciate your roots. And eventually you realise that insecure people try to make you dislike yourself.. well done for finding the time and space to share. As you can imagine, your commentary opens up memories for those of us out here. 🌏🌍When my son got a scholarship to a private school 🇬🇧 I kept being asked by other parents how I got my son into the school. The story goes goes on. He started his dreadlocks in his university years . Asking him then how it would affect his job prospects . He said to me, any employer who would not give him a job because of his dreads was not worth his service. Now an international journalist working from London he keeps his long dreads down past his shoulders. 🥰

I like your Afro hairstyle very much, Lempie. It's beautiful! From time to time, for weeks at a time,I wore my hair like that. I was in Oslo, Norway and it was so funny because it would sometimes make some little old people stop in their tracks and just stare at me and my hair for minutes at a time. I found it hilarious. Also I would catch little children pointing their fingers at me mouth open and then asking their parent/s "what is it " in Norwegian. Usually, the poor parent would hurriedly just hush them. Hilarious !!! Some times I'd say hi to the child/children if they wanted to converse with me. Yes, that gigantic Afro of mine was a great object of curiousity in Oslo in those early 1990's.

It is still the same here.... Children would stop and stare right away and elders would do it also carefully. As got me if anybody asks and is friendly. I WILL EDUCATE THEM 😍🤗🤷🏿‍♀️

Good Morning! Enjoyed hearing about your experiences in Germany. Being black, no matter where we live, whether in a different country or the US, different states or cities, we will always be asked similar questions. This will never change. I love your positive attitude about embracing who you are and that you are so very proud of your heritage. Most important , your hair style is amazing & you should be featured on a magazine Love it!

I hear you girl, the comments are quite offensive. I was also asked, "in your country are guys poor, like really poor " and "if you had a choice would you like your hair like mine or like yours ?". Most of the time I just bite my tongue cause.... Nice video by the way. Continue with your natural beauty.

😄 first of all, your hair is poppig, just beautiful. Your experience is soo different from mine( I live in the South)
My colleagues loves and are amazed by my everchanging natural hair. No one ever ask to touch. Maybe I am not too friendly 😅jk. I have some colleagues (don't work in my department) that don't respond to my greetings, but greets me sometimes 🤷‍♂️. Ooh, everyone is Kind of surprised I can drive, like really now?
But most of all, I realized that the average people are just curious and veeeery ignorant. Especially when it comes to Africa and Africans. I don't pay them too much attention. I love your videos, and again, very nice hair.

Hello Lempies, This waś/is an excellent video, very well balanced, honest while being measured. Girl, you hit the right tone. I am a black Belizean (part of the diaspora) woman living in upstate NY, USA, very unlike New York City. Many of your experiences parallel mine, but not as what I am calling extreme. But the structural racism is ever present here in insidious ways. Great video!. Proud of you. I love the fro. Will check out your hair videos as I want to try again to wear my hair naturally. I tried few years ago but had trouble finding products that worked well. Thank you for the video.

Loooove your hair Lempie 💕. I know for sure most Africans living outside the continent be it Germany or elsewhere still meet these stereotypes daily, one guy in Canada was told I met your brother and he is like, wait what I am the only son in my family what do you mean. Just relax and forgive and live your life happily regardless, the world is sick I mean the fact of “black” just freaks them out at all levels I guess that’s the power we hold I wish we just embrace and enjoy it rather than be offended... of course I stand to be disputed it’s my own observation and perspective 😀

  • @sebastianbolt7886

Yes indeed it's your experience and your perspective, I found Italy has regressed as far as ignorant racist are concerned it's much worse than it used to be. I've never experienced any racism in Germany. But I have have found Italy and Spain to be more ignorant and scornful when it comes to blacks. So marginalized, the UK is the most broad when it comes to non white people although not perfect its still by far the most progressive. PS you always look beautiful 😍

Lempies, atleast in Germany they speak to you, here in Madrid they will stop stare at you head to toe 1,000 times without a hallo, it is not a matter of a small town it is the culture of backwardness here yet they say we are not civilized. My cousin was visiting from Kenya in 2018 and had short platinum blonde hair and I have brown sister locs they stared and as we are did our thing laughing, talking and walking down the streets but we would catch people watching and we would just say “ take it ALL in” in Swahili, English and Spanish and keep it moving.

Ur afro...wow beautiful. My take on ur experience is that humans are the same everywhere, someone doesn't looks like u it's a natural thing to stare., especially if ur skin color or hair texture is different. We Africans or Africa descent are unique and we acquired our color/ skin tone directly from over exposure to the sun depending on ur location on this planet. By the way lempies I really love ur beautiful dark tone complexion. My dear I love my chocolate complexion and I wouldn't change it for any other.

But I did have a question why you chose to do your education in Germany and not America. But I know from my granddaughter who's in the military in Germany she loves it there my granddaughter is mixed African American Jamaican Japanese she's very beautiful.

Black people have a misconception that we do not get skin cancer we dobecause black people come in so many different shades and we have different texture skin the layer of our skin texture is different Bass by culture region I am from the Caribbean when I go to the beach in Florida I get sunburn when I am in the Caribbean I do not get sunburn Florida is dry humid the Caribbean has a high and more salt in the air so based on your skin dark skinned or light-skinned oh combination skin you will get sunburn and it doesn't occur immediately your skin will dry out

Ciao Lempies When I was looking for a video of yours , this one popped up , and even though I wanted to see a more recent one, I decided to look at it, because your afro caught my attention and i thought it might be a wig. I know there is little chance that you ever might read my comment, but I write one anyway.
Talking about African hair. When I was a little boy I told my mother that i would love to have curly hair, because then I would not have to comb it. She solved this problem having my hair cut to about 5mm. I did not need to a comb it after that.
Now being asked "how did you come here?" is not such a strange question, if you take in account that most people get all their knowledge about Africa by the media , which are merciless missleading. All they show or write about are Africans crossing the continent on foot, or piled up on trucks crossing the Sahara. Also they might show Kibera , but never the sky scrapers of Nairobi or the clean streets of Windhoek. Most people cannot imagine that there are universities in Africa, that there are African doctors and engineers in short qualified professionals of every kind.
And now a word to the obvious dislike of refugies. Many Germans feel that their country is invaded by the so called refugies , which in reality are immigrants with no qualification to work and therefore live on social welfare. These people should understand that this situation is not the migrants fault , but the fault of European politicians. Also they should realize that not every foreign looking person is a foreigner or a refugie.
    All the best to you

I don’t know how many blacks or Africans are in Germany, but there is a large population of US military stationed there and is comprised of different ethnic groups. but I bet you if you ask those people have they ever gone on vacation to Hawaii or to the Caribbean they will tell you they will name all the Caribbean places they said they have been trust me my little small island where I'm from we get a lot of Germans a New Zealand's Switzerland so they know what black people look like some of them are just being ignorant I only sympathize with the older older peoplebecause a lot of them a stuck in their own way and they don't travel much the travel only with in there own country 😒

Your hair is gorgeous, will more black women would be as confident as you are with their natural hair. I'm sure if people saw it more then people would stop the stupid questions like, "do u like your hair?"

    Hi Lempies,
I´m an old white, grumpy guy from North-West Germany (68Yrs.). First of all: You look simply sympathetic and beautiful Sorry for the bad experiences you made. It´s a shame! Believe me, the most of the germans would respect you as you are. In my Hometown (about 500.000 inhabitants) the treatment you experienced would be a scandal.
I travelled a bit and made some unpleasant experiences in Africa. But the most people where very nice and friendly. I think wherever you go in the world, the percentage of ass...., no, let it put it friendlier: the percentage of nice people remains the same, wherever you go. And I don´t take it as a question of culture, but as a question of character and respect.
There is one point that irritates me: To be proud of a home Country or Continent. I respect it, but I myself can´t be proud of things I´m not responsible for and I never contributed to. I´m not proud to be german. It´s not my fault that I was born here and I did nothing for it. I like to live here and I think it is all in all a good country, but there is no reason for me to be proud of. Don´t take it too personell, it´s just my feeling. People are different and that is wonderful.
To your Hair: Just beautiful, exact the opposite of mine: I have lost the most of my hairs and the rest is white. So I understand very well, that some people would like to touch your hair. But shure, never would I ask for it, that´s simply respectless. As I said: people are different.
    Have a nice day!!
    Dettmar
