Thank you for posting this. I lived there at the time. It was tragic. Those ads did irreparable harm and destroyed the lives of these teenaged boys and divided the city. Yusuf Salaam has become such an impressive man despite what they did to him. This kind of tragedy happens far too much and is fueled by hate and fear. Not everyone is able to rise above it. This has to stop.

I also remember this hideous incident. Unfortunately, these things are common in the USA. There are and have been many innocent people serving life sentences because of who they are. Mainstream America refuses to believe it. Yet they wave their flags and call themselves Patriots and get angry when athletes refuse to pledge allegiance to the flag. It’s not the allegiance to a flag that many people are offended by. It’s the abject hypocrisy of it all. It is completely antithetical to what America is suppose to stand for.
I remember crying for these boys. Many witnesses for them weren’t even called. Trump is about the pay his debt in full. But since he is morally and spiritually bankrupt, Karma will collect his debt. In full.

It is not a beautiful story. It is a horrendous story. A beautiful story would be one where five young men grew up, went to college, were never victimized by a white supremacist legal system, had families of their own, and passed on their good values to their children.
I cannot see how imprisoning children for a crime they did not commit can be beautiful, even if they're exonerated years later. Yusef Salaam could have done all of those good things without going be wrongly imprisoned. He might have done even better.
There seems to be a presumption that people are going to turn out badly unless they face injustice. Please remember what happened to Kalief Browder and many other wrongfully imprisoned young people.

How many more black men were imprisoned wrongfully by the NYPD? How many more black men are serving time in prison although they never committed the crime?

Black Americans ability to forgive others is almost insane. I just ask to be as if not more forgiving and loving of each other.

There are a lot of conservatives who won't talk about this case. Some even claim a sort of amnesia about it; as if it wasn't assiduously promoted by them for years and years. "Wilding" became a buzzword for what they called "black animals," and they enjoyed pointing to that case as the shining example of who society should be fearful of. But, dead silence once the truth emerged. Men and women of character could step up and say "I was wrong in the judgement I made, and wrong in shouting down those who said there was something very foul about the how the system handled those boys." _Wanted:_ Men and women of character.
