Ahhh, your videos are so nice! It's like watching a kindred spirit! I just finished Yellowface and read 4th Wing early Jan. Do you have a goodreads account?
I'm trying to decide if I want to read Yellowface! I've read Babel, and honestly I think I'm the only person in the world who was a bit disappointed. I think I just expected something different, so maybe if I go into Yellowface with that experience, I won't be surprised? While I did like that she touched on many issues including race, poverty, and much more, I found certain areas of her writing not up to my liking. Felt like she glossed over some pretty big parts (am I the only one who noticed the main friend group falls out out of nowhere in the span of like two pages? Maybe I'm being too harsh, but when I was reading, that really caught me off guard), while spending a lot of time on other parts (explaining where certain words came from was interesting, but not for a whole page, and I admire the research that must have gone into the book, but some of the footnotes or whatever they were called added nothing to the story, while others were amusing). I guess I was just not prepared for the book, I might reread it after some time passes to see where I stand, but I also wasn't a big fan of the ending. In general, the second half of the book was a bit meh for me, and yet I have highlighted some really great quotes, I'm just so undecided. It probably doesn't help that I don't like overly depressing/tragic books, haha. So I'm wondering if I should give Yellowface a try since I wasn't that big on Babel and the writing. The story sounds interesting, but if I'm not a big fan of R. F. Kuang's writing, will it be worth it? I'm also trying to decide if I should start journaling! You've inspired me so much and shown me how much fun it can be, but from my experiences I just don't stick to my journals, I either forget to do it or am too lazy 😭 I think I might stick to monthly/weekly spreads or just decorate a reading journal instead. interesting!! i can totally see where you’re coming from. babel is super packed, and i feel like it’s the kind of book that needs to be read more than once to really digest all the information and heavy research that went into the story. yellowface isn’t as “research heavy” :) it touches on lots of important historical and racial context for the reader’s sake, but not to the point where there are footnotes. the writing in this one is very sharp, leaving no room for any “unnecessary” information. it instantly hooks you in, and it does get pretty crazy towards the end (and there are plenty of trigger warnings like suicide, depression, and anxiety), so do keep that in mind. but if you’re into a book that contains lots of rich, often not-really-talked-about-loudly racial issues that is fast-paced (which can be read in literally one sitting, because it’s THAT well-written and fast-paced), i do recommend giving yellowface a try! 🥰 also, yess i recommend you start journaling! definitely do it without the pressure of needing to constantly keep up with it. you’ll slowly pick up the habit and decide if it’s for you or not :) the decorating part is always so fun and inspiring! i hope you enjoy it 🤍
