    Killer rig man, congrats I know you know from past experience but I'd love to see a side by side tow comparison of the 4th gen 3500 and the new 5500. Keep em coming. True real world testing 👌

    Congrats! The 4500 and 5500 engine controllers are from Cummins- the 2500 and 3500 computers are from Ram. I have a 2017, 5500, and this is what the Cummins tech told me when I asked about break-in and detuning. He said to load it heavy and put it to work and the computer will make the adjustments you need for the best performance.

Hope you and Calahan got Mommy something nice for Mothers day. 8) LOL --gary PS; I remember when you showed the difference between the frames on the 3500 and 5500. I really believe you made the best decision going for the 5500!! Can you customize the dash layout on the cab & chassis models? You should be able to customize it how you want it. I have mine showing turbo boost, engine braking, engine temp & trans temp all on the screen regardless of which page I'm on. Experiment with it. These new trucks have so many features, I'm learning something new all the time.

    I just got my 22' 5500 upfitted this week, and that first tow was just silly smooth. The automatic Aisin handled downshifting so well that when combined with the exhaust brake, I really didn't need the break until sub 25MPH from 65 on the highway.
    One thing I slightly dislike, although it's unavoidable, is if you break while the exhaust brake is on and at lower speeds, it can create a jerky experience when the truck starts downshifting and increasing the stopping power from the exhaust brake.
    Also, 2.5 - 3 on your trailer brake seems VERY low. I am at 6-7 towing 12K, but my trailer is just electric drum brakes...

      Go to electric on hydraulic and you’ll notice a big difference. To where I want to convert my drum brakes on my 2020 PJ dump trailer. The hydraulic disk brakes are great and super smooth on braking.

    Does it cycle from “Full Exhaust Brake” to “Auto Exhaust Brake” when hitting the button again like my 19 2500 did? Auto can be impressive in those rolling hills. Let off the throttle at “X” speed and it modulates the EB and Trans to maintain that speed. Accelerate and it stays at the new speed. Brakes down to another speed, maintains that speed. No cruise buttons to press, no changes to force.
    Almost wish it went Auto - Full - Off so that hitting the button increased EB instead of cycling thru off.

    The trans in the 2019 3500 HO was suspect. Slow driving on hilly back country roads the trans would get hot. Once above 190 degree the trans would slip. Dead pedal was a huge issue, to the point it was dangerous. Mpg was terrible as well as compared to the 2017 2500 I had. The 2019 is now gone and is someone else's problem.

    You probably know this already but the reason the rating is wacky between the 3500, 4500, and 5500 is because the 4500 and 5500 are meant to have all the payload possible for like upfitter bodies and stuff whereas the 3500 is meant to tow

  • @jnk26
    @jnk26 2 роки тому +1

    That's at best a 4.5 gen. It's the 4th gen cab with modified 5th gen front end and interior. The HP number is just an equation. So 240hp retarding at 2900rpm is only 434lbft of retarding at the motor. In 3rd gear of 1.34:1 and the axle of 4.44 means the retarding leverage is 2585lbft. As an example I don't remember what the number you read was. It's like the Mercedes MBE4000's 600hp TurboBrake option rating. That 600hp at 2200rpm(insane rpm for a 13L motor) is only 1432lbft at the motor. You get into the lower gears of an 18 speed like 6th(3L) of 4.38:1 or 7th(3H) of 3.74:1 and a 3.90:1 axle, you end up with 24,400lbft(6th) and 20,880lbft(7th) of retarding. Compared to a 15L same gearing CumminsX15 Performance series 565hp at 1800rpm(1648lbft) would be 28,151lbft(6th) or 24,037lbft(7th). Where in the rpm the torque is applied or is retarding makes a huge difference. 370hp@2800 from that 6.7 is only 694lbft, but 370hp@1700rpm(lazy old DD Series 60) is 1143lbft, or a 375hp Cat 3406E is 1295lbft@1500. My D13 at 1100rpm is making 387hp(1850lbft x 1100 ÷ 5252 = 387.47hp) at 1400rpm it's still pushing 1850lbft but that's 493hp. Funny how 500hp@1700rpm is only 1544lbft. 500hp should be stronger than 493hp but the truck lugs back, and drops gear to 1400rpm, until the output through manipulation(gearing) has enough torque at the wheels to sustain. The load at speed up the given grade. Wike the same in reverse for retarding

    So it doesn’t get high output excited with the boost. The trans isn’t terribly thrilled about the idea of getting that kind of excited but also doesn’t seem to need to either. 4.44 takes care of it I guess. Does it seem to just not need that top end boost with those lower gears (vs 4.10)? That’s been my suspicion all along just not sure how it worked the output numbers out. It is low output comparatively speaking but the rear end seems to bring that back up quite a bit. Is the vgt mechanically different? So many questions now.

    • @bsittig

      I’m in Texas and did land clearing for years before the 2008 market crash. I’d tell you to go after that business but do your research first. In all aspects. How many are doing it in your area, their prices, what sets you apart, and how much of your monthly income is going to support your business. If the market crashes again, how long can you absorb those costs. I did it in the hill country in San Antonio area. I want you to succeed so do all the investigating before spending the money. I hear guys are doing well with the rock crusher attachment on the skid steer in my area. But again, are you late to the market or early?

      @@scottydoesntknow254 that’s awesome. Sounds like a great market. Then in terms of machinery. It all boils down to who is closest or has the best support network. The Takeuchi are great machines and I hear a lot of great things about them, even ones with higher hours. Unfortunately in my area there is only one dealer and the guys I have talked to are trading them for either John Deere or Cat due to part availability. Some saying they have to wait 3-4 weeks for parts. Factor that wait into your profit and jobs and you quickly realize how that can be negative. See what the guys in your area are running and go talk to the dealers/mechanics. The salesman always wants to sell so remember that. I’ve used the Cat machines and parts are readily available but I don’t like the door setup since you cannot open it with the boom partly raised. The Takeuchi and Kubota have upswing doors but I’ve heard a lot of reliability issues with the Kubota. Busted hoses, thrown tracks etc. all cost money and time and time is always money. I really like the side entry of the JCB and the visibility but again parts are the issue. You may consider renting while you get your feet wet. I did when I started and in the off months you don’t have a payment. But, last year proved to be a pain because no one had equipment. All equipment is high right now. Do your numbers and figure out what you need to bring home to pay the bills and live. You’re building a house and being military you may have supplemental income from retirement or disability so those help along with any money you’ve saved. That house payment, truck payment(you’re in Texas so I know it’s a truck) equipment payment and estimation for insurances, fuel, food, utilities etc all can be sat down and calculated ahead of time. Then if you divide that up by work week hours, you know what the bottom dollar is you need to live. From there you can adjust for
      Profit, machine upkeep and upgrades and life in general. Some just find out what everyone else is charging and charge that but to really know your numbers will help you see where your hard earned money is going and what can be improved on. It will also help you avoid the low ballers that will cost you more than you’ll make on the job.

    Dont be surprised if something breaks early over that, diesels has a break in time which limits their power

    You need to get a truck that you're really going to like. I didnt think you exhibited much enthusiasm for its capabilities and comforts. I'll take it off your hands (cheap) since you're already tired of it'

      2022 Ram 5500 have a GCWR of 43,000lbs. Ive seen plenty of guys registered at 55,000lbs and the truck has zero issues.

    Why do you say if you were going longer distances you would go 3500 vs 5500. I’m doing boat hauling long distance and hot shot in the slow months.

  • @Joshua8525

    The way I see it is it’s still a Dodge. Doesn’t matter it it was “rebranded.” Like I drive a Ram Ram 1500. Sounds stupid right? The 1500 is a sub model, not the model. Ram is a model, not the make. Based on the logic of naysayers, that means it can’t be a 4th or 5th gen. It would be a 1st or 2ng gen Ram 1500-5500. But then what vehicle would you be referring to in that numbered sequence? A 1500 what? It sounds incomplete. So you my fine friend have a 5th gen Dodge Ram 5500. Keep up the hard work!

    Sweet ride, just not a fan of keyless remote start vehicles. Once the fob loses connection the truck will be disabled even when you are driving.

    Why do they derate the cab and chassis, I never understood that. You obviously need more power if you're going to be towing and adding weight and everything else you do with a cab and chassis. a pick up is just a pickup!!

    • @patrickcarcamo622
      @patrickcarcamo622 2 роки тому +1

      For longevity and reliability. They look at it as a pickup can have more power but will be utilized less at its max potential. Plus the actual owner is less likely to abuse it. A work truck on the other hand, may be maxxed out everyday and abused by employees. Occasional vs constant use.

      to do with reliability/longevity and personal usage vs commercial usage is another reason for derating the power output and the ability to offer the same warranty as a personal use vehicle, this pertains only to the OEM cab chassis portion of it anything over and above that is not covered by the manufacturers warranty from the date of delivery by the purchaser/s and it is one hell of a nice rig Sam 👍
